She Votes!

100 years ago, the 19th Amendment was ratified. But American women’s battle for the ballot began long before that day in August—and continues, even to this day. Wonder Media Network presents She Votes!—a podcast that digs into the complex history of the women’s suffrage movement and its enduring significance, hosted by award-winning journalists Ellen Goodman and Lynn Sherr. Having lived through—and covered—feminism’s second-wave, Goodman and Sherr tell the definitive story of suffrage, from the first demands to speak on public matters by antislavery activists in 1837, through the 1848 Seneca Falls Convention for women's rights, to the drama of the final passage in 1920 and beyond. Untold Killing

Over the course of a mid-Summer week in July 1995, more than 8,000 men and boys were systematically killed in a small Bosnian town called Srebrenica. 'Untold Killing' tells the little-known story of genocide and ethnic cleansing right in the heart of Europe through the voices of those who survived it. It’s a tale of betrayal, injustice, and what the world’s wilful ignorance towards ethnic persecution leads to. A co-production from Message Heard and Remembering Srebrenica. Hosted by Aleksandra Bilić. ‘Untold Killing’ marks the 25th anniversary of the Srebrenica genocide. Read More

The Reckoning

The Reckoning examines the many ways in which America continues to be affected by its tortured history regarding race, and how that history has affected many of today’s most troubling social issues—mass incarceration, police brutality, income inequality, and now the COVID-19 crisis, which is disproportionately affecting our African American citizens. But this podcast isn’t just about defining the problem, it is about finding real and tangible ways of facing this past which may serve to heal this country’s brokenness, and make some of its most wounded citizens whole. To make this story less abstract and more personal, we will look at how slavery and Jim Crow affected an African American family that was enslaved by one of Kentucky’s most prominent white families. "Shots in the Back: Exhuming the 1970 Augusta Riot" tells the story of one of the first major Civil Rights Era riots in the South. The immediate cause of the riot in Augusta, Ga. was the brutal murder of Charles Oatman, an African American teenager held by police in the county jail. During the riot, six Black men were killed by white police officers, all of them shot in the back. In a collaboration, students at the Jessye Norman School of the Arts join GPB in telling this story.
