Medical Detectives – The University of Edinburgh

Inspired by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the lectures highlight the University’s acclaimed medical research. Conan Doyle drew inspiration for his character Sherlock Holmes when he was a medical student at Edinburgh. He based Holmes on the Professor of Medicine Joseph Bell, who was known for his meticulous attention to detail. Today’s medical sleuths, just like Holmes, must use powers of observation and deduction not only to make the right diagnosis but also to find new treatments. Read More

Medical Laboratory Technology – Fall ’07 – Broome Community College

Medical Laboratory Technicians perform biological tests in search of diagnostic clues as evidence of health or disease. In the search for data on a patient's health, people working in this field may examine specimens through a microscope or perform, for example, the tests necessary to match a donated unit of blood to a patient in need of that unit. They may identify the microorganisms associated with health and disease. They are also competent operators of the computers and complex instrumentation which are used in most areas of today's laboratories. The Medical Technician plays a vital role in patient care by performing the full range of laboratory testing in six major areas of the laboratory: Hematology, Immunology, Microbiology, Body Fluids, Blood Banking, and Chemistry. Technicians may choose to advance, by education or experience, to the levels of Medical Technologist or specialist. Read More

Straight Talk About Stem Cells – Stanford Continuing Studies Program

No area of science holds such promise for treating disease and improving human lives as stem cell research. But no area of science causes such fundamental ethical concern and such ferocious political conflict. In this short course, students will learn the fundamentals of stem cell biology, and study how these powerful cells could be used to make functional organs, treat diabetes or repair spinal cord injuries. With the science and technology firmly in hand, we will journey into the deep reaches of the controversy and examine the international explosion of stem cell research and how law and policy are affecting long-held American dominance in cell biology. New science often provokes a redefinition of ethical standards. Stem cells have reignited the debate about the embryo, abortion, and science run amok. We will leave the shrill rhetoric behind, discussing the question at the heart of the debate: How, as a society, do we balance our responsibilities to the unborn and the sick? This course is presented in enhanced podcast format: the presentation images are synched with the audio track and will display in the album artwork section of your iTunes application. If the album artwork field is not already visible, go to the "View" menu and select "Show Artwork." Read More
