The Econoclasts

The Econoclasts is a new podcast from UnHerd hosted by economist Yanis Varoufakis and journalist Wolfgang Munchau. While they don't always agree politically, they are united in one conviction: the consensus is rotten. Mainstream economics has consistently failed to predict the events that shape our world, yet this broken orthodoxy still dominates policy and media. Each week, they choose two pillars of the established orthodoxy — the "settled facts" — and shatter them, cutting through the spin to connect the dots between money, geopolitics, and the real forces shaping our future.

How To Train A Military

Training a military force is a proposition unlike the one faced by other civil organisations: It has to prepare people to perform in the chaos and turmoil of battle – even simple tasks like making deliveries or baking bread become very different in the face of artillery fire or roadside bombs. It's not just about mental pressure and physical discomfort, it is about facing death while doing the mundane and business-as-usual tasks. It is, perhaps, the greatest test of humans and has always been so. As military training has evolved (along with the force it enables), so have the opportunities in technologies such as simulation: are the benefits without bounds, or is there a point that the benefits of simulation tail off? What mix of virtual and physical performance maximises performance? And amongst all of this is the reality of organisational culture, and the cost-effectiveness of training. How much of this training can be outsourced to a commercial provider? What is the optimal amount of training done away from the cauldron of combat, and how much must be exercised under arms and stressing conditions? Answering these questions is crucial if we are to all understand the importance of training in a military force – and how to optimise it to win in the greatest of contests. Listen to the series as we talk to people who think a lot about military training - from the professional soldiers and commanders to the academics who study it, as well as the commercial operators who are increasingly being employed to deliver it. The Cooley Account

What started as research for a movie resulted in these recordings. This is the life story of Bob Cooley, a man who accomplished the impossible by decapitating Al Capone's criminal operation.

In the 1970s, Bob Cooley was a young cop who decided to become a lawyer and quickly became an insider for the Chicago mob, which controlled the city of Chicago and the state of Illinois.

This multipart conversation details the inner workings of the notorious Chicago crime syndicate. From politicians on the take to a corrupt court system and cold-case murders. There are also never-before-revealed details about cult icon Count Dante and mob fixture Pat Marcy. If you’re intrigued by organized crime, political corruption, and other matters of deceit, this story is for you.

The Global Jigsaw

Looking at the world through the lens of its media. Think of us as your media detectives, helping you get past the propaganda and misinformation. The Global Jigsaw comes from BBC Monitoring, which tracks, deciphers and analyses news media in 100 languages.

We reach across multiple time zones, from China and India, to Iran, Africa and Latin America.

We watch Russian state TV around the clock, giving unrivalled insight into the evolution of Kremlin propaganda.

But propaganda is just part of the information space we inhabit. In its more extreme form, we focus on disinformation that aims to defame enemies, sway elections, and undermine democracy.

We have been monitoring jihadist media for nearly two decades, following the chatter from al-Qaeda and Islamic State group, gaining extraordinary knowledge about their aims, their ideological differences and allegiances.

We watch the behaviour of Russia’s Putin, Iran’s Khamenei, Turkey’s Erdogan, China’s Xi Jinping and anyone else who might be challenging the established order, seeking to expand their global footprint or export their brand of ideology.

At BBC Monitoring, we don’t just speak the language, we understand the narrative. So we can help you untangle the context and single out rhetoric from reality, deception from truth.

Find out more about BBC Monitoring on our website: https://monitoring.bbc.co.uk/

Underbelly: Killing Kurt

For decades, Kurt Calabrese lived in the shadow of his father, Frank “The Breeze” Calabrese Sr., one of the Chicago Outfit’s most feared hitmen and loan sharks. Raised in a home ruled by violence, paranoia, and control, Kurt grew up knowing that loyalty wasn’t a choice, it was survival. In 2007, the Family Secrets Trial exposed 18 unsolved murders and a laundry list of heinous crimes that had terrorized Chicago for decades. Based on wiretap evidence from Kurt’s brother Junior, the case led to life sentences for some of the most powerful mob figures in modern history, effectively dismantling the Chicago Outfit. But the trial was just the public reckoning. The real story began years earlier, inside the Calabrese family itself. Season 3 of the award-winning podcast Underbelly, “Killing Kurt” takes listeners back to where it all began. Beyond the headlines and the courtroom, this is the story of a crime family at war with itself. As Kurt wrestled with his own loyalty, his older brother committed the ultimate betrayal, setting off a chain of events that would not only take down their father but leave Kurt caught in the crossfire. Told through his firsthand account, Kurt reveals the untold cost of growing up in the mob, the violence at home, the psychological toll, and the impossible choices made to escape a legacy of fear. Listen to the all new season of Underbelly: Killing Kurt, premiering April 2nd. Available wherever you get your podcasts. --------------- Underbelly is a podcast series exploring the wild and true stories behind investigations into the underbelly of society. CORRUPTION: What happened to Grant Solomon?

On July 20, 2020, 18-year-old Grant Solomon tragically died in Gallatin, Tennessee; his body was found in a ditch underneath his own truck. In what was described as a freak accident, the details of Grant’s death remain unclear to many people. The only known witness was Grant's father, Aaron Solomon*, a former Nashville TV News Anchor turned financial analyst. There was no investigation or accident reconstruction of the automobile fatality and shockingly NO autopsy; though there were many discrepancies between the official statement, the condition of Grant's body, and the state of Grant's truck. Join us as we investigate Grant's odd and tragic death, with the goal of re-opening his case and getting Grant the justice he deserves. There's more to this story than what meets the eye, and we're currently uncovering some major red flags in Tennessee.

*Grant's death has been ruled offically as an accident: Aaron Solomon has never been charged or arrested for any of the allegations made against him by his ex-wife or daughter.
