It Was Simple: The Betty Broderick Murders

These were murders that would turn any town on its head, but La Jolla, Calif? That rich jewel by the sea? Thirty years ago, a man and his new wife were murdered in their bed. That’s a long time for a double homicide to stay in the public eye and imagination, but these were no ordinary murders. The killer was the man’s first wife, Betty Broderick. Betty and Dan Broderick had looked like the perfect couple, right up until they weren’t. After four children and nearly 15 years of marriage, after the riches they both worked for were finally within reach, he walked out and began having an affair with his assistant. But divorce ended the Brodericks’ marriage only on paper. “Till death do you part” turned out to be the way it would ultimately end: bitter, savage and fatal. It took two criminal trials to send Betty Broderick to prison, and we’ll hear not only from her divorce attorney, but also from the criminal defense attorney who argued for her in two murder trials, plus the foreman of the jury that convicted her. So many things burned this case into memory: The principals were rich. The jealous killer was, for a change, the woman, not the man. It’s been the subject of TV movies and books. It’s resonated with two generations of Americans -- deserted wives, unhappy husbands. And it’s raised some questions about how divorce laws may contribute to what’s called the feminization of poverty. All of these issues remain critical and controversial in contemporary America today. Thirty years after five bullets, two coffins and one California prison inmate No. W42477, why can’t we look away from Betty Broderick? Read More

Necessary Evil

"Government, even in its best state, is a necessary evil. In its worst state, an intolerable one" - Thomas Paine. The federal government is too big, too powerful, and chock full of lying, pompous, moronic sociopaths hellbent on enriching themselves and their pals on Wall Street. Here at Necessary Evil, we shine a bright spotlight on the incompetence of the Fed and the beauty of the free market with a free-flowing river of sarcasm, trolling, and absurdities. Read More

New Faces of Democracy

Welcome to the New Faces of Democracy podcast, hosted by Nancy Bynum.   This podcast features inspiring interviews with people who have transformed their lives since 2016 and who are transforming our political landscape. These are not career politicians or former cabinet members, but ordinary citizens who are starting organizations, running for office for the first time, using their creative skills and otherwise stepping outside of their comfort zones to stand up for our democracy. Along the way, they are discovering new skills and talents and creating new communities.   Nancy felt her own personal call to action in the aftermath of the election of 2016, when it became painfully clear how important it is to use our voices to stand up for the America we believe in. As she became increasingly politically active, she witnessed the emergence of an awe-inspiring phenomenon: people changing their lives to defend our democracy. She decided that the best way for her to help would be to share the work of these change-makers, and New Faces of Democracy was born. Since then, she has dedicated herself to both spreading the word about this new wave of activism and chronicling the tremendous political and patriotic energy of this time.   This podcast elevates and celebrates these new faces, and in the process, will hopefully inspire you and maybe even galvanize you to take action on your own. These are unprecedented times, but there is a silver lining. As we become more engaged citizens, our democracy will become stronger and more resilient– in fact, it’s already happening.  So if you’ve had enough depressing news and are ready to feel hopeful and maybe even optimistic about the future, head over to newfacesofdemocracy.org where you can subscribe to the podcast, watch the videos and follow New Faces of Democracy on social media. American Immigration from Mariel to Miller

Judge (Ret.) Paul Wickham Schmidt & Podcaster Marica Sharashenidze, with an “up close and personal look” at American’s most misunderstood issue. For nearly five decades, retired Judge Paul Wickham Schmidt has been involved in the development and application of American immigration law. From the staff of the Board of Immigration Appeals (“BIA”) at the U.S. Department of Justice (“DOJ”), to the General Counsel’s Office of the “Legacy” Immigration & Naturalization Service (“INS”), where he was the Deputy General Counsel and Acting General Counsel, to partnerships at two of America’s most distinguished law firms, Jones Day, then Fragomen, to appointment as Chairman and an Appellate Judge at the BIA, followed by 13-years on the trial bench at the U.S. Immigration Court in Arlington, VA, the “retail level of American immigration,” until his retirement in 2016, Judge Schmidt has “seen it all” and lived much of it. Since “retiring,” he has been an Adjunct Professor of Law at Georgetown Law, a proud member of the Round Table of Former Immigration Judges (amici in more than 50 cases seeking to uphold due process in Immigration Court), the author of the blog immigrationcourtside.com, and an oft-quoted commentator on, and outspoken critic of, current developments in immigration law, due process, and human rights. In this timely, hard-hitting, highly personal seven-episode series, podcaster Marica Sharashenidze interviews Judge Schmidt about six events that shaped American immigration and his life in the law: From the Mariel Boatlift and the Refugee Act of 1980, to the fundamental changes made by the Immigration Reform & Control Act of 1986 (“IRCA”), the development of the BIA in the 1990s, the infamous “Ashcroft Purge,” all the way up to the Trump Administration’s all-out assault on due process in our Immigration Courts, and ending with a more recent look at what the future might hold for both immigrants and America’s role as a nation that welcomes and depends on them. Get some unique historical context and learn how the re-emergence and “normalization” of racism, xenophobia, false narratives, unbridled nationalism, and de-humanization of “the other” in our national immigration and refugee policies and dialogue presents an existential threat to the rights and future of every American.
