Focus: Adults in the Room

The production team behind the Peabody-nominated "Lost Patients" returns with a new investigative series: "<em>Adults in the Room" begins on February 24, 2026.

Seattle, 1999. At Garfield High School, Mr. Hudson is a legend. With a thundering voice and imposing stature, Mr. Hudson — or “Tom” as select students call him — teaches biology and leads an elite outdoors program. But when teen reporters at the school paper start exploring a rumor that he sexually abused students, all hell breaks loose. Adults close ranks, and schoolmates turn on the young journalists. And then one day, a voice on the school intercom announces that Mr. Hudson is dead. Isolde Raftery is one of the students who first hears about and reports allegations against Mr. Hudson. Three decades later, she is an investigative journalist in Seattle. In "Adults in the Room," Raftery re-reports the story to understand what really happened in 1999. Was a whole school community groomed by a charismatic predator? Or was she part of a whisper campaign that cost the life of a great teacher?

"Focus" is KUOW’s home for immersive audio documentaries. Each season zooms in on a single story that challenges commonly held narratives about life in the Pacific Northwest and reveals something bigger about American society.

Shakespeare For All

Shakespeare For All is an engaging, accessible introduction to the life and work of William Shakespeare, featuring world-class scholars and performers. You’ll learn who Shakespeare was and what historical events shaped his writing. You’ll be guided through his most popular poems and plays by leading scholars, actors, and interpreters of Shakespeare. And you’ll find the tools you need to become an interpreter of Shakespeare yourself and join in the ongoing global discussion his works have inspired. The first course offers a tour through Shakespeare’s moment in history and his life. You’ll also discover strategies for understanding Shakespeare’s stories, characters, and language across his plays. Patsy Rodenburg – Craft: Sweat and Joy

In the first two podcasts of her series, Patsy Rodenburg and her colleague, Eliot Shrimpton discuss the erosion of craft in teaching, artistry and leadership.

Practising and teaching craft takes a mixture of resilience and humility. Craft requires hours of repetition and reworked correction when taught to inexperienced students. It takes time and is therefore expensive to teach. However, the benefits of learning an embodied practice are limitless; not only in maintaining excellence in the performing arts but in the actual process of physical learning.

Craft is about doing; it is beyond explanation or a reading list. It is learning that can’t be bluffed or taken from A.I.. The results are clear and seen; heard, felt and experienced. Through repetition craft becomes organic. It frees and focuses the imagination. It allows the craftsperson to pour their body, mind, heart and spirit into what they are making.

And with the hard work comes the joy. The joy of achievement, nailing it, consistency, invention and transformation.

Once you have succeeded in learning one craft, the door opens and you can apply the same working processes to any other craft. It is a transferable skill.

Everyone can learn craft. It is not a secret known to a few but a discipline that our species developed very early in our evolution. Everyone, in every community, learned how to work in this way; so known and relevant to our survival that we have taken craft for granted.

Someone showed a child how to weave a basket or knap an arrowhead. Every so often a child found joy in making the basket and then excelled at basket making. Better baskets changed their community for better.

Craft is essential if you want to excel. It is the journey towards your chosen profession; the team, the band, the guild, the ensemble.

The Wrong Walk Home

In the small town of Lexington, SC, secrets, lies and racism came together to take away a young Black man’s freedom and ultimately, his life. Willie Leaphart, 17, was walking home from church one night on Jan. 26, 1890, when he was arrested and accused of attacking a white woman at one of Lexington’s finest homes. Despite being a teenager, Willie must have known that a Black man facing a charge like that in the Jim Crow South faced almost certain death.  The attorney George Graham, reluctantly appointed by the court to defend Willie, uncovered facts that undercut the accusations of Willie’s guilt and suggested a darker reason for why he was accused of the crime in the first place and why he couldn’t be allowed to make it out of Lexington’s jail, where he was lynched by a mob of 100 men. For 130 years, the crime was forgotten. But when the evidence is rediscovered in 2021 in the course of River Bluff High School research project about lynching in the county, it creates a chance for Willie’s name to finally be cleared. But can South Carolina in the 21st century correct a 19th century injustice? Will the reason for his death finally come to the forefront? Read More
