US consumer spending rose in August at the fastest pace in over a year, helping to power the economy through persistent inflation. Inflation-adjusted personal spending climbed 0.6% in August from a month earlier, for the biggest monthly jump since March 2025. The Federal Reserve’s preferred measure of underlying inflation, the personal consumption expenditures price index excluding food and energy, rose a less-than-expected 0.2%. The prior month was also revised lower.

Apple Inc. Chief Executive Officer John Ternus, just weeks into the role, is moving to overhaul the iPhone maker in an effort to accelerate product development, broaden its range of devices and create a leaner organization with a greater focus on engineering.
The plans, which Ternus has discussed internally with colleagues, offer the first signs of how Apple’s former hardware engineering chief intends to reshape the company following Tim Cook’s 15-year tenure as CEO. Global anxiety over artificial intelligence risks has intensified following fresh disclosures about a far wider range of breaches by advanced AI models, setting the stage for a high-stakes meeting between Anthropic PBC Chief Executive Officer Dario Amodei and President Donald Trump.
Amodei and Trump met on Sunday night, according to a White House official, bringing together two men at opposite ends of the AI safety debate. The meeting marked their first private sit-down after months of rocky relations between the Anthropic chief and the administration over safety-related issues involving the company’s AI tools.
We discuss their meeting and the day's top headlines with Seth Fiegerman, Bloomberg News AI Editor.

Iran Officials Pessimistic About US Deal Before Midterms Sep 28, 2026

The people, companies and trends shaping the global economy. Watch Carol and Tim LIVE every day on YouTube: http://bit.ly/3vTiACF
The selloff in the US bond market deepened on Monday after President Donald Trump rejected Iran’s latest proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, dampening hopes of a diplomatic breakthrough to end the war. The decline pushed most Treasury yields higher by nearly 10 basis points by noon in New York, with those on 10-year bonds climbing to a fresh 19-year high. Meantime, Iranian officials have privately expressed pessimism about reaching a deal to end hostilities with Washington and reopen the Strait of Hormuz before US midterm elections in November.

The Tiny Magnet Maker That Attracted $1.6 Billion From Lutnick Sep 28, 2026
    Show notes

The people, companies and trends shaping the global economy. Watch Carol and Tim LIVE every day on YouTube: http://bit.ly/3vTiACF

In late January, the week before Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick announced a $1.6 billion government commitment to fund a US magnet maker, bankers at his former financial services company, now run by his sons, were busy earning fees raising $1.5 billion more for the company from private investors.

The parallel deals have been questioned by Democratic lawmakers alleging possible conflicts of interest involving Lutnick and his sons. But a more basic set of questions has dogged the project: Can USA Rare Earth Inc., the company getting these public and private funds, actually produce the critical minerals and magnets the government needs to break China’s chokehold on global supplies?

For a closer look, we speak with Joe Deaux, Bloomberg News Senior Reporter for Corporate & Economic Statecraft.

President Donald Trump said he would meet again with Chinese leader Xi Jinping in November, following what he said was a successful summit in Washington that was seemingly light on concrete policy outcomes. Oracle's Force Majeure Sep 25, 2026
    Show notes

The people, companies and trends shaping the global economy. Watch Carol and Tim LIVE every day on YouTube: http://bit.ly/3vTiACF
Oracle Corp. is moving to shield itself from racking up expenses on a massive data center being built in New Mexico, adding a fresh wrinkle to a project beset by opposition and regulatory setbacks.
The technology giant sent the project’s developer, a unit of Blue Owl Capital Inc., a notice citing force majeure, according to people familiar with the situation. Rather than trying to walk away as the site’s main tenant, Oracle is attempting to put off payments should the data center dubbed Project Jupiter get derailed and fail to come online in 2028 as planned, the people said, asking not to be identified discussing private matters. Companies typically invoke force majeure to free themselves from contractual obligations when problems arise beyond their control. In this case, Oracle is seeking to assert its contractual position if the build-out is delayed.
For a closer look, we speak with Anurag Rana, Senior Tech Analyst for Bloomberg Intelligence.
