Episode 26 - Can WE Change the World?
Sep 27, 2018
Show notes
A natural progression from our conversations of self improvement and going within, is an ability to give your new gift to the world. This is all part of the much larger question of whether we can really change the world or not. It’s important both as a hope of creating a better world around you, and as a means of keeping yourself and your tribe motivated when the answer can seem like a big fat no. We believe deeply in our ability to enact change, and might not even exist as a podcast if that weren’t the case.
In this episode of the podcast we throw out some ideas and opinions related to this deep question, and then dig into the reasons why we might need to get out there and tackle some of the biggest issues facing our society today.
Episode 25 - Stoicism with guest Hunter Wood

Show notes
Today’s podcast is a result of the debt of gratitude we owe to the Misfit Project Tribe. We are so incredibly proud of how you have taken our messages to heart, and more importantly, shown a willingness to share and have meaningful conversations about these incredibly powerful topics. You are the reason we are able to go as deep as we do in today’s podcast, and for that we are truly grateful.
Personal responsibility, a willingness to dedicate energy toward only the things within our control, and the ability to free ones mind regardless of the situation are all cornerstones of a Stoic mindset. Far easier said than done, the realization that we as humans have complete control over our own actions and reactions to the barrage of stimuli we face on a daily basis can be incredibly intimidating. However, if we can learn to accept that so many things are out of our control and choose to only dedicate our finite energy toward those we can, we stand to gain a tremendous level of self realization and empowerment. If you’re a leader or someone who carries the responsibility for the well-being of others, your reactions to even the smallest things can have a tremendous impact on the emotions and effectiveness of your team, which can absolutely be the difference between success and failure. Be the calming force that others look to when the unexpected or uncontrollable happens. Be the friend or family member to accept personal responsibility for your actions and thoughts. Live in the gap between stimulus and response, and acknowledge that the only way things can affect you is if you allow them to.
Episode 24 - 4 Steps to Helping Someone Make a Change
Aug 30, 2018
Show notes
To keep the belief alive that we can change the world, we need to consistently provide proof through advocacy. That proof hinges upon the skills we address in this podcast. Our ability to to facilitate change is much more important than our ability to consume and create media.
At a simpler level, a lot of us are just trying to make changes within our own worlds, because so many of the people we love are sick and/or in pain. This empathy we feel is the fuel needed to tackle step number one, which is identifying our own motivation to help others. Once we’ve established a meaningful reason behind our desire to help, we need to make sure that we aren’t a walking contradiction to the advice we’re putting out there. Setting an example is an excellent way to combine steps two and three in this process. A lot of times “finding your in” can happen through the example you set. When you carry yourself in a manner that is appealing to others, you are often given the ability to hit the ground running when someone asks for your secrets. Last but not least is the topic of your persistence. I was a horrendous example of how not to handle this in my first few years devouring information on health and wellbeing. My M.O. was “Here’s the info, good luck”, and I still had the audacity to be frustrated about things not working. If someone genuinely needs your help, and you’ve made it this far in the process, you have to understand that it won’t be easy for either of you. Don’t quit on them. They need you.
Episode 23 - 6 Months with a Flip Phone
Jul 27, 2018
Show notes
Throughout the entirety of the 2016 and 2017 I dealt with some alarming levels of anxiety related to the world of communication that lived in my pocket in the form of a smart phone. It would make sense for me to begin to distance myself from this world, but I didn’t. I had unknowingly concocted a dangerous combination of anxiety and addiction. Luckily for me and my personal relationships, this podcast forces me to evaluate my life with a level of consistency that I’ve never strived for. Knowing that I spend a large part of my days researching and teaching about The Misfit Project, I have a level of built in accountability that holds me to a higher standard that I was able to hold myself to before. This is where the flip phone comes in. My stab at quitting the smart phone cold turkey for a while.
In the podcast we jump right into how I did it, how it went, and what it means for me moving forward. I really hope my experiment can give some insight into the conversation about using technology to our advantage without letting it run our lives. As always I would love to hear from everyone on what they think about the episode and the topic.
Episode 22 - Personal Growth
Jul 16, 2018
Show notes
This week on The Misfit Project Podcast we take our first dive into the world of personal growth. It probably goes without saying that each and every topic we delve into has ramifications to our growth, but this generic topic name has a very deep meaning. This first attempt to crack into the world of our own personal psychology has a very serious pre-requisite to it that you’re all very familiar with: our personal health. Episodes two through seven of this podcast outlined exactly how we define our health, and what we can do to take it back.
With that first step in mind, we take on the topic of understanding ourselves on a deeper level. What have we been through in our lives that has a way of painting our thoughts, actions, and emotions? Each step we take down this path gives us an opportunity to grow, because we become aware of opposing forces at play. With all of this in mind we can take on re-writing our stories with an entirely new set of information. We hope you enjoy this side road we are taking, and as always please let us know what you think on social media!
Episode 21 - 5 Ways to Use Summer to Improve Your Health
Jun 15, 2018
Show notes
After a month-long travel hiatus, we are back! Thank you for your patience, and do not fear, the Misfit Project podcast is alive and well.
Today’s episode is very much about getting back to basics and using this great weather to entice some extremely healthy situations. Summer gives us an opportunity to clear out the distractions and spend some meaningful time outside with the people we enjoy. It can be a real battle to avoid the technology that pulls us away from each other in the colder months, but there’s nothing better than taking your meals out to a deck or picnic table to remember why we chose to surround ourselves with these people in the first place. Not to mention how much easier it is to make some great tasting AND nutrient dense food with the grill being back in play for most of us. With our relationships easily improved by such a simple concept, we can move on to bolster our ability to use the sun to set our body clocks. Building on morning sunshine with outdoor activity to help tire us out and then spending that time outside in the evening is a recipe for a lovely exhaustion and melatonin cocktail.
The great outdoors, or whatever your comfort zone allows, is a great place to learn how to meditate for a bunch of reasons mentioned in the podcast. We can also take a new approach to mindfulness for the type A personality just by getting out there for a nice long walk. A staggering amount of the great thinkers of our time built their robust mental reserves through a lot of walking. Last but certainly not least is the significantly improved ability to take our movement practice outside. Think of how many of the previous “boxes” mentioned check themselves off when we take our fitness into the sunshine.
We hope you enjoy this back to basics check-in on the fundamentals of the Misfit Project.
And as always: Don’t talk about it. Be about it.

Episode 20 - Food Sensitivity Testing
May 10, 2018
Show notes
In recent months we have been responsible for an influx of requests on the how-to of feed sensitivity testing. A group of our clients has seen serious improvements related to nagging injuries, inflammation, and GI distress as a result of removing foods that were causing auto immune responses.
We are very big fans of this type of test and retest approach, under the right circumstances. That’s where today's guest Meneah Haworth comes in. As a functional medicine practitioner she understands the importance of looking at the big picture and making sure that her clients are well informed about what any of the tests at her disposal are looking for. There’s much more to this discussion than ordering a test, and we hope that you’ll give it a listen so you can make an informed decision before moving forward with your own testing.

"A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step"
Creating measurable change in society is one hell of a task, but if no one tries, no one will. We are here to do just that, and we really need your help. We need your help identifying the problems, and we need your help with the solutions. This weeks podcast presents us with a unique problem in that the outputs are potentially immeasurable. The inputs are all of the trappings of modern society and how we learn to use them in balance in hopes to advance our capabilities without sacrificing our souls.
To be a drone is totally immerse yourself in technology, the rat race, and a need for the latest a greatest objects. To be a drone is to rush out of bed after a crappy nights sleep, run out the door with a stimulant in hand, sit still in front of a screen underneath fluorescent lighting, drive home, television, and into bed all while in arms reach of mobile technology. To be a drone is to rinse and repeat these steps, day after day after day after day. To be a drone is to surrender absolutely to auto-pilot.
In this episode we aim to identify our enemy, hash out it’s effects, and offer solid steps to usher us towards balance. This is the very beginning of this movement, and we hope you will help us stick to our words and spread the concepts far and wide.
As always, and potentially more importantly than ever: Don’t talk about it. Be about it.
Super Simple Bone Broth Recipe
Apr 24, 2018
Show notes
We’ve brought up the benefits of bone broth so much on the podcast that we felt it was time to our recipe and a how-to video out there. Slow cooking bones, vegetables, and spices is a sure fire way to add some serious nutrient density to your diet. The benefits range from joint health to reduced inflammation and lots of places in between. Once you realize how easy it is to make something that tastes great and is packed with glucosamine, condroiton, collagen, glycine, minerals, and vitamins, it will become a key part of your routine.

1 Pasture Raised Chicken Carcass
1 TBSP Himalayan Pink Salt
1 TBSP Organic Black Peppercorns
1 TBSP Organic Ginger
1 TBSP Organic Turmeric
4 Cloves Organic Garlic - Smashed
2 Stalks Organic Celery - Roughly Chopped
2 Orgainc Carrots - Roughly Chopped
1 Organic White or Yellow Onion - Roughly Chopped
1 Bunch of Organic Parsely
2 TBSP Apple Cider Vinegar
1 Gallon Filtered Water
Equipment
Crock Pot or Pressure Cooker
Slotted Spoon
Mesh Strainer
Large Pot
Glass Containers for Storage
Two Large Oven Mitts
How To Make It
Step 1
Cook and pick chicken, leaving small amounts of skin and muscle meat along with all bones and tendons. Store cooked chicken for meals, put the rest in the crock pot.
Step 2
Measure out spices and apple cider vinegar, wash and cut vegetables, add to pot with water. If using a pressure cooker be sure to keep water below fill line.
Step 3
Slow cook on low for 12-18 hours OR run two 120 minute cycles on pressure cooker.
Step 4
Remove majority of chicken and vegetables with slotted spoon, careful not to burn yourself. With oven mitts, pour liquid through mesh strainer and into large pot. If you’re planning on saving some for longer term use you can transfer to Pyrex or mason jar and freeze.
Step 5
Enjoy! Adding addictional spices like cayenne and smoked paprika can make the sipping experience more enjoyable. Aside from that there are a multitude of opportunities to replace water with bone broth in cooking. Boost the nutrient profile of things like rice or noodles being used for a refeed after a tough workout or just deglaze your pan after cooking a nice piece of meat.
