    Episode 8 - Q&A Dec 20, 2017
    Show notes

Welcome to the first Misfit Project Q&A episode! After six weeks filled with a lot of information we wanted to make sure that you found the places it would fit into your life and answer any questions about specifics. Periodically throughout the year we will sprinkle these episodes in to make sure that we stay connected as a community and facilitate momentum and motivation for topics that specific resonate with you. Thank you to everyone who took the time to ask questions, up-vote them, and now have listened to the podcast. You guys are our tribe and we’re very grateful for all of you.

    Episode 7 - Personalization Dec 13, 2017
    Show notes

The last five weeks of the podcast have been geared towards the masses. What can we all do to make positive changes in our lives? With all of that information in mind it’s imperative that we find ways to personalize these concepts to make sure they fit our lifestyle and goals for the long term. We’ve all done the thirty day challenges or adopted a new drastic change only to end back up where we started. The goal of The Misfit Project is to improve quality of life and longevity.

Once these concepts start to fit into our lives we can create a little space for the burning questions that I am asked most often. What supplements should I take? What sleep app is the best for tracking? How do I add muscle? And the list goes on.

At the end of the day the take home from this episode should be that we have a lot of work to do before we try to ask the complicated questions, because the simple questions are complicated enough to get started on. Always remember that a community based approach is always the easiest way to ensure your success and the success of others.

    Episode 6 - Move Dec 06, 2017
    Show notes

With all of our work priming our minds and bodies it is inspiring to begin the conversation about movement. That said, most people will be surprised with the direction of this podcast. So much of the depression, obesity, heart disease, and diabetes epidemic is related to the amount of time we spend as a society sitting or sedentary. With all of the new information related to the effects of a lack of focus in this area, we make it our primary target long before we discuss exercise strategies.

Once we tackle the task of reducing our hours of sitting or minimal movement, we can dive into parts two through four of the Misfit Project Hierarchy of Movement:

    Resistance Training

All exercise based movement should come after a consistency of movement practice (as mentioned above), but as we pass that hurdle, we believe that any form of resistance training is the next step. Anything from squatting to a box with our bodyweight to a 500lbs back squat is considered resistance training and the enemy we are confronting is bone density and musculoskeletal health. A base of healthy bones and muscles can be a massive life-extending benefit.

    Mobility

Addressing our ability to maintain or restore the sliding surfaces of our muscles is a hugely important aspect of even having the ability to exercise without injury. We are huge fans of the Yoga community and their efforts to combine a healthy body with a healthy mind. Those of us that are more self-starters can find vast amounts of information on this topic for free on the internet. Every single person on earth can see a path to a healthy pain-free life if they look hard enough or enlist a qualified practitioner.

    Endurance

We are built to take off on a long run without any warning, and the buck stops with us as individuals on why this could seem like a lofty pursuit. Years of lack of sleep, technology-driven activities, crappy food, and sitting have sapped us of our natural ability to clear waste from our lymphatic system at an efficient rate. Luckily for us, the answer is as simple as it gets. Move. Then move a little faster, then a little bit longer. Your dedication will clear up these issues, every time.

Don’t Talk About it. Be About it.

Our first enemy is complacency. From there a steady diet of resistance, maintenance, and focused movement will unequivocally extend our lives. Be the example you wish you had. Change yourself and the world in the process.

    Episode 5 - Fuel Nov 29, 2017
    Show notes

Weeks one through three of our introduction series were all about gaining momentum in areas of our lives that so many of us neglect. This week we are tackling a very familiar friend (or foe): the fuel we put into our bodies. If this is your first week joining us, I highly recommend taking a step back and jumping into the episodes on tribes, rest, and peace of mind. Being optimized hormonally through everything we are working on is crucial before we take our first steps in examining the food we choose to put into our bodies.

The staggering statistics from the CDC suggesting more than half the USA is obese, and one third being either pre-diabetic or diabetic lets us know that what we’ve been doing is more than a little off. Our goal is to ensure that we are ingesting a nutrient-dense diet that helps cultivate a healthy gut biome. We hope to achieve this through the framework of quality, quantity, and timing.

    Quality

Simply put, we aim to prioritize food quality as often as possible by eating what we consider “real food.” A diet based on quality produce, naturally raised animals and seafood, along with a dose of healthy fat would do wonders for our obesity and diabetes epidemics. In hopes that I don’t bore you twice, I’ll refer you to this portion of the podcast where we go in-depth on what specific micronutrients do for you, and where we can find them.

    Quantity

There seems to be an extremely unnecessary battle going on currently about the merits of a macronutrient based diet vs. a micronutrient based diet. Lucky for those of you not interested in this fight, they are both essential and coexist wonderfully. By limiting carbohydrates outside of our exercise window we are priming our bodies to shuttle the glucose into muscle tissue (and not our love handles) for future use as energy. By consuming a considerable amount of healthy fats outside of this window, we are telling our bodies that we can run on fat, and go to our body fat to burn for energy rather than begging for more sugar.

    Timing

With a solid plan in place for what and how much, it’s time to tackle when. One sure fire way to increase the likelihood of our bodies burning fat and giving our gut biome time to harvest beneficial bacteria is to continue the fast we’ve started during sleep throughout the morning. A solid start is twelve hours from the moment you ate the previous night until you ingest your first calories the following day. From there playing with the range of 12-16 hours is your next step. One important note is that we do not alter the quantity of food when fasting, just the window of time that we eat.

Throughout the day our insulin sensitivity goes from low to high. This information allows us to game the system by relying exclusively on protein and fat throughout the day while our ability to store glucose as energy increases. In an ideal world, we would exercise in the afternoon/evening and take advantage of our natural rhythms on top of the insulin sensitivity we gain from exercise.

Don’t talk about it. Be about it.

Another week of information to digest (no pun intended) means another opportunity to add on to the momentum we’ve created together this month. One of the best ways to help improve the lives of the people around us is to lead by example. Always consider how the improvements you have made have influenced your well being and that whoever you are trying to help just might not be there yet. A combination of persistence and understanding should help you find your “in” eventually.

    Episode 4 - Peace of Mind Nov 22, 2017
    Show notes

With our strategies in place for tribes and rest it’s time to investigate the prolific rise of stress and it’s effects on our health. For centuries our biology reacted to life threatening stressors with incredible mobilization of almost all processes our body performs. When you’re running from a bear, you’re not too worried about digestion, muscle recovery, fat burning, hormone production, etc. When you’re reacting to a modern stressor like traffic that is triggering this same robust response, you need to understand that you’re trading your ability to do all of the things we just listed for a few moments of complaining. The body's reaction no longer matches the gravity of the situation, and it’s imperative we understand that.

    The Three Check-In System

Our solution to working with our biological stress responses is maintaining peace of mind throughout the day with something we’ve coined the three check-in system. In essence we are ensuring we start the day off in a way that allows us to use our decision making skills as often as possible rather than going on auto pilot and letting our primitive brain take over. From there check-in number two is a way to re-group when you’re out “in it”. To finish our day we are going to build on our evening routine we started after the #TMPrest podcast. By beginning and ending our day on positive notes we are increasing the chances that we can continue to make progress each day.

    Momentum

Each week we are adding small pieces to our routine and lifestyle in hopes that everything starts to blend together. Once these habits take hold the power of momentum starts to take over and each new piece is easier to incorporate than the last.

Five Ways to Survive the Thanksgiving Binge Nov 22, 2017
    Show notes

There’s no getting around the fact that Thanksgiving dinner is far from meeting the Misfit Project Fuel guidelines, and we’re not about to tell anyone to skip it. Here are five concepts to ponder as you make your final plans for turkey day:

    1. Maximize Insulin Sensitivity

Your body’s ability to transport glucose from your bloodstream into muscle cells, and not into fat cells, is greatly influenced by exercise and macronutrient timing. Scheduling a combination of cardiovascular exercise and resistance training the day before AND the morning of Thanksgiving will give you a much higher chance of depositing some of that pie into your muscles instead of your rear end. Keeping carb intake low before exercise on both days will also ensure your glucose receptors are turned on during exercise and ready for the upcoming re-feed.

    2. Give Your Gut a Break

The combinations of food that end up on your plate throughout Thanksgiving day can wreak serious havoc on your gut bacteria. One of the most surefire ways to reduce gastrointestinal issues is to give your gut a chance to recover. Another problem a lot of us are all too familiar with is how easy it becomes to go way off track after a day like this. The sugar craving gut bacteria will quickly rewire your brain into thinking you need to keep feeding them to be happy. Once again our solution is to starve those gut bugs out of existence by not giving them what they want. The gold standard would be too fast for a full twenty-four hours after your final meal, which sounds impossible but can be very doable for someone used to fasting when you consider shutting it down early in the afternoon and not eating again until that time the next day. For those of you that are new to the fasting game, we recommend a 12-16 hour fast, which will still have a tremendous impact on your ability to get right back on track.

    3. Insert Nutrient Density Into Your Meal

One of the things we can control on Thanksgiving is the ingredients we use while cooking the wild assortment of food. Specific micronutrients are vital for processing inflammation, organ function, immune system regulation, and the list goes on. Eating the way we do on Thanksgiving is a tremendous stress for our bodies to take on and one of the best ways to lend a hand is to cook with nutrient dense ingredients. There are plenty of places for grass-fed butter, bone broth, pasture raised eggs, organic produce, and naturally raised animals within the standard Thanksgiving dinner.

    4. Stay Hydrated

Our ability to perform many of the functions listed in concept number three are dependent on adequate hydration. Simply put we need to make sure we enter the day hydrated and continue that trend through to the next morning. Remember more is not always better when it comes to hydration. A sixteen-ounce glass of water with a pinch of pink salt to start the day, one before you eat, another a few hours before bed, and potentially a fourth around your exercise should do it.

    5. Pick up the Slack Elsewhere

The system of tribes, rest, peace of mind, fuel, and movement is built to withstand a day like this every once in a while. Always control the other facets that you can when you can. That way when its time to get right back to a stable fuel protocol it’s just as easy as any other day. We can still spend meaningful time with loved ones, get a great nights sleep, execute our morning routine, and get some quality movement in regardless of what we choose to eat on one day.

    Episode 3 - Sleep Nov 15, 2017
    Show notes

We are in the business of convincing and motivating you to adopt lifestyle changes that will positively affect your health without breaking the bank. There might be no better bang for your buck than a great nights sleep. It’s free, and the health benefits are plentiful. But a good nights sleep isn’t just as simple as laying down and turning the lights off. It begins the second you wake up that morning and hinges on your ability to down-regulate before calling it a night. In this episode of The Misfit Project we drop some horrifying or satisfying information depending on your outlook, and in turn, tackle what we consider to be the action items you need to start off on the right foot.

    Quality

Before we commit to spending a significant portion of our lives in bed, we need to make sure it’s worth our time in the first place. Addressing sleep quality ensures that vital processes that occur during sleep take place, setting you up for a much higher level of success the following day. Before we even step foot into the bedroom, the down-regulation process must be well underway. A couple of hours should be dedicated to turning your 21st century scatter brain off, and your ability to relax on. From there we can audit our sleep sanctuary to ensure external forces won’t disrupt our sleep cycles. A relatively cold, entirely dark room with proper air circulation combined with a readiness to sleep is the key to optimizing your time at rest.

    Quantity

There’s no getting over the data backing a solid eight hours in bed a night. For the more hard headed I demand that the starting point is at least four actual sleep cycles which equal out to about six and a half hours in bed (Four ninety-minute cycles + thirty-minute buffer = six and a half hours). From there the hope is that they’re motivated to step it up to five cycles after seeing what the first improvements did for them. Anyone genuinely relying on mental and physical abilities being top notch multiple times a day needs to explore the benefits of six full sleep cycles.

    Timing

At the beginning of this post, we claim your good night's sleep begins in the morning, and that has to do with the excellent powers of our circadian rhythm. The more we adhere to this pattern the healthier we become in an astounding amount of ways. To get this started, we must rocket out of bed as soon as we wake up and signal the flood of cortisol needed to wake up by exposing yourself to direct sunlight or artificial blue light in the absence of sun. Throughout the day your cortisol levels will naturally drop, and your down-regulation process will feel natural in the evening if you let go of the stressors of the day, explicitly including exposure to bright lights. The relaxation and lack of blue light exposure combine to begin the natural release of endogenous melatonin, setting you up to repeat the process all over again the next day when you wake up.

The initial order, and then synchronicity of these three ideas will lead to improvements in your health and wellbeing you would pay anything to have when they’ve been free for the taking the whole time.

    Episode 2 - Tribes Nov 08, 2017
    Show notes

Arguably the most important founding principal of The Misfit Project is to provide effective lifestyle changes with a low barrier to entry. We are often presented with diet and exercise advise that feels daunting to even begin because of the monetary commitment and skill level required. The same problem arises when our most precious resource, time, is gobbled up. This is where the basis for the structure of our modern tribal activity comes in. In this article we will take a dive into why meaningful relationships and the great outdoors are so important to your health, and how we can combine them to ensure you still have time for everything else in your life.

    Choose Your Tribe

The concept of the ancestral heath model can be a controversial topic, if you’re looking for controversy, that is. But if we look through the lens of trying to understand where they were healthier and why instead of arguing over details, it is a vastly powerful template to adopt. Evolutionary biology tells us that human beings evolved in groups and developed reward systems around them to ensure we were well protected, fed, and had means to procreate. Fast forward to present day and those reward systems are still deeply engrained in our biology, but much harder engage. The further science digs into our response to meaningful relationships, and loneliness, the more apparent it becomes that they play a distinctly meaningful role in the modern diseases epidemic. One study that examined data from more than 300,000 individuals found that lack of meaningful relationships increased the risk of premature death from all causes by 50%. Those numbers surpass obesity, a sedentary lifestyle, and even a smoking habit upwards of a pack a day. Scare tactics of that nature often work well as motivation, but considering the solution itself can be extremely uplifting as well. Taking the time to audit your personal relationships so that you can focus on the good ones, clean up the ones worth saving, and pull away from negativity is a very low cost high reward scenario. It’s important to note when choosing the members of your tribe that we continue to use the words meaningful personal relationships and not just relationships. This is where a pragmatic approach to ancestral health comes in handy. The tribesmen and women of the past may not have been able to choose the exact makings of their inner circle, but you certainly can.

Turn your face to the sun and the shadows fall behind you

With your tribe secure it’s time to turn to tribal activities, which took place exclusively in the great outdoors. Regardless of whether you call the city, suburbs, or a more remote setting home, almost everyone has ample opportunity to completely change their wellbeing simply by spending 10-20 minutes outside, showing off as much skin as possible, between 10am and 3pm. How? Sunshine. When researching the effects of sun exposure and vitamin D3 synthesis the main issue with the findings is choosing from the thousands of studies showing remarkable health benefits. This “problem” stems from findings that D3 regulates upwards of 1,000 different genes that govern nearly every tissue in our bodies. This explains lack of sun exposure on bare skin leading to depression, breast cancer, high blood pressure, heart disease, arthritis while a steady diet of rays increases testosterone, dopamine, serotonin, and immune function. Once again we are handed a life changing behavior on a silver platter. Imagine how beneficial meeting your tribe for lunch in the sun could be on your health.

Ditch the concrete jungle for the real one

Now that we’re gaining some momentum it’s time for a bigger ask. In the modern world many of us are a lengthy car ride away from a true nature setting, but armed with the knowledge of the benefits and our tribe along for the ride, it’s a no brainer for everyone. While being able to lean on scientific proof is always helpful in the pursuit of wellness, being able to intuitively understand and even feel the benefits of something just based on personal experience is extremely powerful. Most people would agree that a leisurely walk through the woods on a nice day leaves them feeling better than they did prior to entering the forest. This feeling is an important part of convincing yourself to make it part of your routine, as is the case with most anecdotal evidence. Beyond the feel good hormones associated with combining friends, sunshine, and a quiet setting are some profound “behind the scenes” health benefits. Part of our innate immune system consists of a type of white blood cell called a Natural Killer Cell (AKA NK Cell) that has a profound roll in rejection of tumors and viral infections. Two separate studies done on a group of males, and then repeated on a group of females, showed a significant increase in NK cells that lasted for more than 7 days in the groups that walked in the forest vs the groups that walked in an urban environment. To think regular walks in a woods setting could stave off the common cold/flu and potentially even cancer is very powerful.

Don’t talk about it, be about it

Just as providing effective lifestyle changes with a low barrier to entry is a founding principal of The Misfit Project, so is action! We have made it our duty to convince you to do more than just acquire knowledge. We want you to use it, share it, and embody it so that you can make the changes in your world you want to see in yourself and others. Take the time to assemble that supportive inner circle and lead them out into some sunshine and the occasional stroll in the woods. Resist the urge to downplay the effects of such simple things until you’ve given them the chance to change your life.

    Episode 1 - The Interview Nov 01, 2017
    Show notes

Welcome to the official launch of The Misfit Project. This episode of the podcast is trying to accomplish two things: the first is just to let you know who we are and what we’re doing, the second is the tall task of trying to convince you to tune in indefinitely. Over the course of the next six weeks we will be tackling the topics we believe are the keys to completely changing your health and wellbeing. The goal with these topics and tips is to keep things simple, cost effective, and impactful. The order we have chosen for these topics to unfold may not create the sexiest headlines as we get started, but we promise it’s worth your time to stick around through the full six weeks. We are beyond excited to get started and are fully committed to filling the expectations we’ve laid out.
