Postpartum Story: The Birth of A Parent with Melissa Macleod Mar 17, 2021
    Show notes

The birth of a child not only represents the start of a new life for the baby, but a new life for the parent as well. While this “birth” may not be recognizable to others and on the surface the new parent looks the same, they emerge a different person on the inside.

In this episode of Yoga | Birth | Babies, I speak with new parent and actor, Melissa Macleod about her transformation as a new mother. Melissa shares her internal shift from embracing her new life and learning to trust her instincts as a parent. She also opens up about mistakes she made in early parenthood and what she learned from them.

Introducing Anti-Racism to Your Kids with Dr. Beverly Daniel Tatum Feb 17, 2021
    Show notes

As parents, we aim to raise our children to be good people. Inclusive, respectful people that help move humanity forward. To do this, we have to have open, honest and sometimes difficult conversations about issues that our country and society faces. Simply stating “Do onto others as you would have them do onto you” is not enough.

In this episode of Yoga| Birth| Babies, I speak with clinical psychologist, author of the book Why Are All the Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteriaand former president of Spelman College, Dr. Beverly Daniel Tatum. In this important conversation Dr. Tatum helps define anti-racism, prejudice, and white privilege. She offers insight into ways people may be complacent, unknowingly moving towards racism, and how “well meaning” parents contribute to systemic racism.

Children are not inherently born racist and Dr. Tatum gives solid starting points to talk to kids of all ages about racism.

Birth Inequities in the US with Rhea Williams Feb 03, 2021
    Show notes

The reality of birth inequities in the US is not merely an opinion; it is a fact. Women of color are dying at higher rates than their white counterparts, and in some parts of the country that rate is up to 12 times higher.

In this episode of Yoga|Birth|Babies, I speak with Rhea Williams, Certified Nurse Midwife and Director of Professional Education and Programing for Spinning Babies® about birth inequities in the US. Rhea shares insight into how the mistreatment of black slaves, the targeted manipulation of birth control, and the inequality of respect and treatment of black people has led to a deep distrust of the current healthcare system within the black community. These societal failures have resulted in women of color, regardless of education and income, receiving poorer quality of care and being more likely to die in childbirth. Rhea provides tangible steps that individuals and communities can take to better support black birthing people.
