Chelsea Signs Morgan Rogers, Evenepoel Wins Again Jul 22, 2026
    Show notes

On this episode of Yesterday in Sports, Chris Horwedel recaps a dominant Chicago Cubs victory, one of the strangest endings of the MLB season, the latest LeBron James free-agency developments, significant injury news for the Carolina Panthers, a record-breaking Chelsea transfer and another major Tour de France performance from Remco Evenepoel.

The show opens at Wrigley Field, where the Cubs score 6 runs in the first inning and cruise past Detroit. Chicago sends 12 hitters to the plate against Framber Valdez, while Pete Crow-Armstrong reaches base 5 times, Michael Conforto homers and David Peterson delivers a strong start.

The Dodgers edge Philadelphia despite an impressive performance from Zack Wheeler. Max Muncy provides the decisive home run, but the game’s biggest talking point comes on the final play when Brandon Marsh is caught between third and home and Alec Bohm is doubled off second, producing the final 2 outs during the same baserunning mistake.

Chris also runs through Tuesday’s complete MLB scoreboard. Tampa Bay collects 21 hits against Toronto, Manny Machado homers twice for San Diego and Fernando Tatis Jr. launches the longest home run of the MLB season. The Mets shut out Milwaukee, Texas blanks the White Sox and Cincinnati knocks Seattle out of first place in the AL West.

Baltimore-Boston is postponed, preserving the Red Sox’s 14-game winning streak and setting up a Wednesday doubleheader. Boston remains 1 victory away from tying the franchise record established in 1946. Pittsburgh-Yankees is also postponed and moved into a doubleheader.

There are no WNBA games, with the league preparing for its final schedule before the All-Star break.

In the NFL, the Carolina Panthers place right tackle Taylor Moton on the non-football injury list after he was diagnosed with a blood clot in his lung. Moton is responding well to treatment and is expected to play this season, although he will miss the beginning of the regular-season schedule. Cornerback Jaycee Horn also begins camp on the list after suffering a foot injury while training.

The NBA section focuses on LeBron James’ unresolved future. Rich Paul says the decision will not be rushed after James informed the Lakers that he would not return for another season in Los Angeles. Golden State, Philadelphia, Miami and Cleveland are among the reported possibilities as James considers his competitive goals, personal fit and the story surrounding the final stage of his career.

In the NHL, Connor Bedard discusses the Chicago Blackhawks’ changing expectations after signing a five-year, $75 million extension. Bedard is coming off a 75-point season, but his availability for training camp remains uncertain as he continues recovering from shoulder surgery.

The show closes at the Tour de France, where Remco Evenepoel wins the individual time trial for his second consecutive stage victory. Boston Nears Record, FIFA Opens World Cup Brawl Probe Jul 21, 2026
    Show notes

On this episode of Yesterday in Sports, Chris Horwedel recaps the Boston Red Sox moving within one victory of a franchise-record winning streak, Sabrina Ionescu’s remarkable overtime performance, a major Green Bay Packers extension, FIFA’s investigation into the World Cup final brawl and Álex Palou’s continued IndyCar dominance.

The show opens at Fenway Park, where Boston earns its 14th consecutive win in a tight matchup with Baltimore. Caleb Durbin delivers the decisive late home run before Aroldis Chapman escapes a dangerous ninth inning. The Red Sox can now tie the franchise record established by the 1946 team, while their surge from below .500 has completely changed the conversation around the MLB trade deadline.

Chris also runs through Monday’s full baseball scoreboard. Cleveland hits a season-high 7 home runs, Jazz Chisholm Jr. powers the Yankees, and Philadelphia beats the Dodgers behind a major performance from Trea Turner. Other highlights include Kansas City winning on a squeeze bunt, Seattle shutting out Cincinnati behind Cal Raleigh and George Kirby, and the Angels ending a 106-game losing streak when trailing after 8 innings.

In the WNBA, the New York Liberty stop their four-game slide in an overtime thriller against Dallas. Sabrina Ionescu struggles through regulation before producing a perfect shooting performance in overtime and tying the league record for points in an extra period. Breanna Stewart nearly records a triple-double while carrying New York through the earlier stages of the game.

Dallas plays without Paige Bueckers following her hard fall, although she has been cleared of a concussion and remains outside the league’s concussion protocol. Chris also covers Las Vegas beating Toronto, Minnesota improving to the WNBA’s best record and Washington ending Golden State’s 9-game winning streak with a late comeback led by Kiki Iriafen.

The NBA section focuses on Matisse Thybulle reportedly agreeing to a one-year contract with the Los Angeles Lakers. Chris explains how Thybulle could improve Los Angeles’ point-of-attack defense while acknowledging the shooting questions that have limited his role in important postseason situations.

In the NFL, the Green Bay Packers reportedly agree to a three-year, $57 million extension with defensive tackle Devonte Wyatt. Green Bay is betting on Wyatt’s pass-rushing ability and recovery from the leg injuries that ended his previous season.

The episode also covers a developing report that NFL owners are preparing another contract extension for commissioner Roger Goodell. A new agreement could keep Goodell in charge through the league’s next collective-bargaining negotiations, future media-rights decisions and continued discussions about expanding the regular season to 18 games.

In soccer, FIFA begins investigating the post-match confrontation that followed Spain’s World Cup final victory over Argentina. The incident involved Leandro Paredes, Eric García, Gavi and several other players before Lionel Scaloni attempted to calm the situation. FIFA has appointed a disciplinary and ethics prosecutor but has not announced a timetable for possible sanctions.

The show closes with Álex Palou winning the rain-delayed IndyCar race at Nashville Superspeedway. Palou earns his fifth victory of the season and 24th of his career while strengthening his pursuit of a fourth consecutive series championship. With 6 races remaining, his consistency has turned the title race into another test of whether anyone can seriously challenge IndyCar’s dominant driver.
