Week 17 Sunday Night Freestyle: Kenny Pickett keeps Steelers alive, Packers embarrass Vikings, Buccaneers clinch NFC South & Eagles fall fast Jan 02, 2023
    Show notes

Rookie Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Kenny Pickett led the comeback of the day, with just under two minutes to spare, down four against the rival Baltimore Ravens. Escaping a sack, he fluttered off to the left side of the pocket and fired a laser to running back Najee Harris in the front corner of the end zone to put the Steelers up 3 and keep their playoff hopes alive.

Yahoo Sports' Charles Robinson and Frank Schwab kick off their regular Sunday night podcast reacting to Pittsburgh's magnificent win and how Mike Tomlin turned around a disastrous season into a magical one. With one more win next week (and a little help), the Steelers could be playoff bound again and Tomlin's streak of winning seasons would remain unbroken.

Charles & Frank follow up the Pittsburgh talk breaking down all of the games from Week 17's slate including Green Bay's smackdown of the Minnesota Vikings, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers claiming a second straight NFC South title against the Carolina Panthers, the Philadelphia Eagles falling disastrously close to losing the 1-seed in the NFC and a surprisingly peppy Denver Broncos squad playing the Kansas City Chiefs close after firing Nathaniel Hackett.

They close out the show burying Carson Wentz and wondering whether Lovie Smith and Kliff Kingsbury will be coaching their final games next Sunday.

Derek Carr's benching kicks off the 2023 QB carousel (and why Tom Brady to the Raiders makes sense) Dec 29, 2022
    Show notes

A handful of dire quarterback news came down across the wire on Wednesday, setting up for a surprising end of the regular season and very interesting offseason. First and foremost, the Las Vegas Raiders benched Derek Carr for the remainder of the season and the QB has subsequently stepped away from the team, presumably having played his last snaps in silver and black.

Charles Robinson & Jori Epstein kick off this mid-week podcast reacting to this news out of Las Vegas and how it would set up nicely for pending free agent QB Tom Brady to reunite for one last ride with his former offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels, now the head coach of the Raiders. Also, with Carr most likely done in Vegas, what teams would make sense as a landing spot for the 31-year-old passer?

In other QB news, Charles & Jori discuss the latest concussion suffered by Miami Dolphins QB Tua Tagovailoa, what it means for his future and after that, analyze Ron Rivera's announcement that Carson Wentz would return as QB1 for the Washington Commanders.

Afterwards, Charles & Jori return to Monday's news of the Denver Broncos firing first-year head coach Nathaniel Hackett and what it means for the team going forward. How will the new coaching candidates react to the tumultuous first year under the Walton/Penner ownership group and what sort of information would they need before agreeing to coach Russell Wilson.

Finally, they close out the podcast looking ahead to three of this weekend's biggest matchups: the Carolina Panthers traveling to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the Baltimore Ravens hosting the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday night and the battle between the Buffalo Bills and Cincinnati Bengals on Monday Night Football.

0:20 Las Vegas Raiders bench Derek Carr and why Tom Brady signing with Las Vegas next offseason makes a ton of sense

22:15 Latest concussion to Tua Tagovailoa & what is next for the Miami Dolphins QB

32:30 Washington Commanders elevate Carson Wentz back as starting QB

36:10 What candidates will want to know from Denver Broncos ownership after the firing of Nathaniel Hackett

55:00 Panthers face Buccaneers for command of the NFC South

59:35 Ravens host Steelers on SNF while Lamar's status remains murky

62:15 Bills and Bengals face off for short-term bragging rights as best team in the NFL

Christmas weekend was packed with football, from an eventful Jaguars-Jets matchup on Thursday night to a sleepy overtime thriller on Sunday night between the Buccaneers and Cardinals. The holiday craziness carried over into Monday as the Denver Broncos fired head coach Nathaniel Hackett only 15 games into his freshman season.

Jalen Hurts' injury complicates NFC playoff picture, should Jets trade for Aaron Rodgers next offseason & why Robert Kraft needs to micromanage Bill Belichick Dec 22, 2022
    Show notes

After not being in danger virtually all season, the top seed in the NFC is suddenly at risk. With a shoulder injury sustained by QB Jalen Hurts, likely elevating Gardner Minshew to the starting position for at least this week, the Philadelphia Eagles suddenly find themselves in a high-leverage divisional battle on Saturday afternoon against the playoff-hopeful Dallas Cowboys.

Charles Robinson is joined by Yahoo's Charles McDonald & Jori Epstein to discuss what this means for the Eagles, Cowboys and the entire NFC playoff picture now that Hurts is likely to miss at least a week and may not even return until the playoffs in January.

Later in the show, the crew breaks down a bunch of interesting Week 16 games and the major storylines to keep track of heading into them. The Jacksonville Jaguars and New York Jets face off on Thursday night, and the spotlight will be on 2021 top picks Trevor Lawrence and Zach Wilson, the latter of whom is making his second consecutive start after being benched for the now-injured Mike White earlier this season.

The Cincinnati Bengals-New England Patriots matchup could mean a lot to Bill Belichick, who is staring down a rare losing season. Charles Robinson explains why missing the playoffs could mean new scrutiny for Belichick under owner Robert Kraft.

Finally, the gang closes out the show discussing the fading Seattle Seahawks taking on a defensively stunted Kansas City Chiefs crew and how the legend of Brock Purdy has a chance to grow (or crumble) against the Washington Commanders.

0:40 What Jalen Hurts' injury means for Eagles-Cowboys and the NFC playoff race

10:45 All eyes on Trevor Lawrence and Zach Wilson in Jaguars-Jets

24:10 While Bengals cruise to playoffs, Kraft needs to have more control over Belichick's decisions coming out of a rocky Patriots season

37:55 Seahawks try to keep playoff hopes alive against below-average Chiefs defense

46:10 The case against Brock Purdy going into 49ers-Commanders

Week 15 Sunday Night Freestyle: Patriots' last-second blunder, Vikings' unbelievable comeback & Trevor Lawrence has officially arrived Dec 19, 2022
    Show notes

Week 15 got off to a weird start in the NFL right away. Saturday's triple-header started off with the 10-win Minnesota Vikings instantly falling into a 33-0 hole at home against a struggling Indianapolis Colts team. Well they came back and ended up winning 39-36 and the weekend's games continued to get stranger from there; most notably by the absolutely wild finish in Las Vegas as the Raiders surprised the New England Patriots thanks to a Chandler Jones defensive touchdown on a play in which Patriots WR Jakobi Meyers threw an ill-advised lateral pass as the clock hit double-zeroes.

Charles Robinson & Frank Schwab look back at this weekend's wild slate of games including the aforementioned unbelievable finishes in Minneapolis and Las Vegas, the New York Giants essentially punching their playoff ticket with a win over the division rival Washington Commanders, Trevor Lawrence looking like the first overall pick in a surprise win over the Dallas Cowboys and the Detroit Lions clawing their way back to .500 thanks to a win over the New York Jets.

Kyler Murray out for the season, NFC South is embarrassing & should OBJ skip regular season games before signing? Dec 15, 2022
    Show notes

Charles Robinson & Charles McDonald are coming at you with a fresh episode following a busy week of storylines as we near the end of the NFL regular season.

Pain strikes in Phoenix as the Arizona Cardinals quarterback, Kyler Murray has officially been diagnosed with a season ending knee injury. Compounding that news, Steve Keim, the Cardinals GM, has stepped away for health reasons. The fellas then decide the timetable for the reset in Arizona & who is on the chopping block first. After seeing other impending playoff teams add depth this week, the pod speculates whether or not GMs are over OBJ’s games & if it would be worth signing him at this point given his health status. Atlanta has named a new starter at quarterback in Desmond Ridder resulting in Marcus Mariota ending his season early. On the front office side of things, as we get closer to the offseason, the show speculates which head coaching job is in the most danger along with who would be best to fill the openings. The fellas wrap up the show with a discussion about whether or not Dan Campbell should receive Coach of the Year votes.

Week 14 Sunday Night Freestyle: Dolphins, Giants and Jets seasons slipping away, Purdy's 49ers blow out Buccaneers and Vikings finally catch an L Dec 12, 2022
    Show notes

As the fifth and sixth overall picks in the 2020 NFL draft, Tua Tagovailoa and Justin Herbert are always going to be compared against one another. Herbert's success will always end up being a referendum on the Miami Dolphins' decision to pass him up that April. Tonight we got the first instance of real head-to-head feedback between these two star-crossed QBs and the teams that picked them back-to-back nearly three years ago, as Herbert's Los Angeles Chargers defeated the Dolphins 23-17 on Sunday Night Football.

Yahoo's Charles Robinson & Frank Schwab kick off their Sunday night podcast looking at these quarterbacks and their teams whose playoff hopes still are very much in flux with only four games remaining in the 2022 season. Is Tua's recent two-game slide a sign of a larger issue? Can Herbert keep the Chargers winning into the postseason?

Charles & Frank address these questions and look at all the major storylines from Week 14, including Brock Purdy's San Francisco 49ers blowing out Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the Buffalo Bills getting even against the New York Jets, the Detroit Lions keeping their win-streak alive against the 10-win Minnesota Vikings & the Dallas Cowboys barely squeaking by with a win against the league-worst Houston Texans.

What's up with OBJ, Baker claimed by Rams, Titans fire GM Robinson & is Brandon Staley right for Chargers? Dec 08, 2022
    Show notes

As the 2022 NFL playoffs draw closer, some of the most interesting storylines approaching Week 14 involve a bunch of parties who will not be a part of the on-field action this Sunday. Charles Robinson is joined by Charles McDonald and Jori Epstein to dissect the biggest NFL stories of the week.

Kicking things off, the market for free agent WR Odell Beckham, Jr. may be cooling off as reports are that OBJ may not be ready to return to action until at least the first round of the playoffs. Jori reports from her experience inside the Cowboys facility why the front-runners for OBJ may be having second thoughts.

Next, the crew talks about the latest on Jimmy Garoppolo's injury in San Francisco, what the pathway to success looks like for Brock Purdy under Kyle Shanahan's system and how Dallas and Philadelphia look just too unstoppable in that conference.

Elsewhere in the NFC, the Carolina Panthers shockingly released former first overall pick Baker Mayfield on Monday, giving the QB an opportunity to play the remaining 5 games of the season with another squad before hitting free agency in March. The floundering Super Bowl champion Los Angeles Rams picked him up Tuesday, and while his status for Thursday night's Rams/Raiders match is in question — what's not in question is that this may be one of Mayfield's last chances to prove himself before entering the Akili Smith/Josh Rosen/Ryan Leaf zone of first-round QB busts.

In the AFC, the major news of the week was the Tennessee Titans unexpectedly parting ways with GM Jon Robinson. After 7 straight winning seasons and what's about to be 3 straight AFC South titles under Robinson's management, the crew tries to parse why the Titans made such a bold move mid-season.

Finally, McDonald expands upon his recent column about the Los Angeles Chargers, why they're in the middle of another frustratingly average season & if Brandon Staley's coaching mistakes are putting him on the hot seat.

0:20 The latest on Odell Beckham, Jr. and why he hasn't signed yet with the Dallas Cowboys or any other organization

15:00 Can Kyle Shanahan scheme Brock Purdy into playoff success, or will the Cowboys & Eagles crush the 49ers in the playoffs?

23:30 Baker Mayfield's future after being cut by Carolina Panthers, claimed by Los Angeles Rams

33:30 Fallout from Tennessee Titans firing GM Jon Robinson in a surprise move

45:35 Is Los Angeles Chargers HC Brandon Staley cut out to be a head coach in the NFL?

Week 13 Sunday Night Freestyle: Brock Purdy saves the day, Burrow is KC's kryptonite & Deshaun's underwhelming return Dec 05, 2022
    Show notes

The playoff picture in both conferences was shaken like a snow-globe in an earthquake on Sunday afternoon as two developments from the late games may very well determine this January's playoff seedings.

First, in San Francisco, 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo left the game with a broken foot that will reportedly sideline him for the rest of the season, significantly dampening the hopes of a major playoff contender. In that game, the 49ers beat the Miami Dolphins, bumping the Buffalo Bills atop the AFC East. Paired with the Cincinnati Bengals beating the Kansas City Chiefs in the afternoon's other marquee matchup, suddenly Buffalo jumped from the fifth to the first overall seed in a matter of hours.

Charles Robinson & Frank Schwab react to all thirteen of Sunday's games from around the league including the aforementioned injury to Garoppolo, the Bengals rounding into Super Bowl form yet again, the Minnesota Vikings holding off the New York Jets, Deshaun Watson's return to football in Houston and Lamar Jackson's ill-timed knee injury.

The 7 most interesting Week 13 games & why the two worst may be the two most compelling Dec 01, 2022
    Show notes

Week 13 has a number of huge games on the slate as the NFL playoff picture comes into focus, and ironically, two of the most interesting ones feature 3 teams that aren't even sniffing the playoffs.

Before diving into this week's excellent schedule, Charles Robinson & Jori Epstein open today's podcast checking in on two other teams whose playoff hopes have all but been extinguished. Charles reports on former Carolina Panthers head coach Matt Rhule and some of the comments he's made about his firing since taking a job as the new HC of the Nebraska Cornhuskers. Next, our hosts talk about the Los Angeles Rams shutting down Aaron Donald for the week due to an ankle injury and how the team is likely going to be one of the worst squads for the rest of the season — great news for the Detroit Lions who possess LA's first-round pick in 2023.

Later in the podcast, Charles & Jori dive into why Cleveland Browns-Houston Texans and Denver Broncos-Baltimore Ravens may not be the most appetizing on-the-field offerings this weekend, but have the most compelling off-the-field storylines between the return of Deshaun Watson, Lamar Jackson's contract status and the continual stories of Russell Wilson's unpopularity within the Denver locker room.

After that, Charles & Jori dive into five of the spicier matchups of the weekend that will definitely have an effect on playoff seeding: the Buffalo Bills traveling to the division rival New England Patriots, Mike White's New York Jets taking on Kirk Cousins' Minnesota Vikings, a compelling NFC East matchup in the Washington Commanders traveling to the New York Giants, a Kyle Shanahan-Mike McDaniel showdown in Miami Dolphins at San Francisco 49ers and an AFC Championship game rematch in the Kansas City Chiefs traveling to the Cincinnati Bengals.
