Show notes

The 2023 NFL scouting combine is only a couple days in the rear view mirror, yet with this weeks news stories as the franchise tag deadline hit on Tuesday afternoon, it feels like it may have been three months ago. Nevertheless, Matt Harmon is joined by NFL.com draft expert, our old friend Eric Edholm!

Then Matt & Eric discuss former Las Vegas Raiders QB Derek Carr signing with the New Orleans Saints, the Seattle Seahawks extending QB Geno Smith, Jacksonville Jaguars WR Calvin Ridley's reinstatement & a pair of RBs receiving the franchise tag in Dallas' Tony Pollard and Las Vegas' Josh Jacobs.

Later in the show, Eric delivers all of his thoughts from last week's scouting combine, including breakdowns of the four top QBs (Bryce Young, CJ Stroud, Anthony Richardson & Will Levis), and two most coveted RBs (Bijan Robinson and Jahmyr Gibbs).

In the middle of their combine discussion, the guys react live to the news that Baltimore Ravens QB Lamar Jackson has received the non-exclusive franchise tag and now may seek a deal with any of the other franchises in the league.

Closing out the episode, Matt and Eric discuss a trio of WRs (Jaxson Smith-Njigba, Jordan Addison and Quentin Johnson) and Eric shouts out all of the TEs who could be of value to fantasy managers down the line coming out of this year's rookie class.

Fantasy Football Lessons Learned: WRs & TEs Feb 28, 2023

Show notes

Matt Harmon and Dalton Del Don get to enjoy themselves, for a while, and talk about lessons learned at the WR position from the 2021-22 NFL season before having to talk about what happened to the TE position.

They start at the top, with Justin Jefferson as WR1 and the lessons we can take away from his awesome season before wondering if he’d be the #1 WR picked next year or if Ja’Marr Chase is ready to pass him.

After working their way through the top 12 WRs with lessons for each one of them, mostly that we should trust the talent and ignore everything else when it comes to elite WRs, the guys move on to trying to solve the TE position.

Matt believes that this last season was an aberration for TEs and that they’ll come back to reality next year, while Dalton is more concerned about whether it’s (again) time for him to fade Travis Kielce.

02:15 Lessons Learned: Wide Receiver

06:40 Rookie WRs

08:00 WR1 Justin Jefferson

11:10 WR12 Ja’Marr Chase

12:40 WR2 Tyreek Hill

14:35 WR3 Davante Adams

41:45 WR9 Amari Cooper

45:10 WR10 DeVonta Smith

Fantasy Football Lessons Learned: Quarterbacks Feb 22, 2023

Show notes

Matt Harmon and Scott Pianowski go through the top 10 fantasy QBs for the 2022 NFL season and the lessons they learned along the way that will guide their fantasy football drafts in 2023.

The guys talk about the steep cliff there was between the top 4 fantasy QBs this season and everyone else, making the argument against the popular “Late Round QB” strategy. They also discuss rushing QBs and whether they’re worth the injury risk to get the fantasy value from them.

The top fantasy QB for the season was Patrick Mahomes, and most of the lessons learned are about how no other QB can justifiably be compared to him. However, there was plenty to learn from guys like Josh Allen (high floor), Jalen Hurts (influx in talent helps), Geno Smith (we should’ve seen it coming), Trevor Lawrence (coaching matters) and more.

02:15 Late round QB?

04:20 Steep cliff at QB in 2022

8 Fantasy Football Lessons Learned: Running Backs Feb 21, 2023

Show notes

Matt Harmon and Andy Behrens get together to discuss what they learned, as fantasy football experts, about the running back position this past season and how they’ll use that knowledge to adjust how they handle it next season.

The guys figured that the best way to talk themselves through the top RB lessons learned was to attach one lesson to each of the top 8 RBs in fantasy football last season, with a couple of overachievers added to the end.

Find out why you shouldn’t talk about injuries when preparing for your fantasy football draft, why we should’ve seen Saquon Barkley’s big season coming, why Derrick Henry is just different than other RBs and why Andy Behrens might be the GOAT.

05:45 Austin Ekeler

Super Bowl LVII Recap: Mahomes or Hurts in fantasy next year? Feb 13, 2023

Show notes

Matt Harmon is joined by Scott Pianowski to recap the Kansas City Chiefs’ exciting 38-35 win over the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LVII, but the conversation pretty quickly turns to next year’s fantasy value for Patrick Mahomes, Jalen Hurts, Travis Kielce, Isiah Pacheco, Miles Sanders and just about everyone else who played in this game.

The guys start off by talking about the late-game penalty that kept the Eagles from being able to make a game-winning (or overtime-forcing) drive at the end of regulation, and the Eagles classy response to the flag, before turning their attention to the game and the talent on both of these rosters.

Patrick Mahomes is on his way to becoming the best QB in the history of the league, the AFC is absolutely loaded, and the Eagles are still probably the most talented roster in the entire NFL. This may not be the last time we see either of these teams, or both of these teams, in the Super Bowl over the next few years.

The guys have some fun conversations on if they’d rather have Mahomes or Hurts on their fantasy team next year, what the Eagles’ backfield could look like, how Ryan Tannehill must’ve felt watching A.J. Brown in the Super Bowl, and what lessons the rest of the NFL can take away in terms of drafting and developing QBs.

Ekeler's Edge at Super Bowl LVII: Stefon Diggs, Justin Fields & Myles Garrett Feb 10, 2023

Show notes

Los Angeles Chargers RB Austin Ekeler joins Matt Harmon from Radio Row in Phoenix, Arizona leading up to Super Bowl 57 for the season finale of Ekeler’s Edge.

The guys spend some time catching up, including Austin talking about the Chargers’ heartbreaking playoff loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars and getting a new offensive coordinator in Kellen Moore, and discussing their plans for the offseason.

After that, the guys sit down with Buffalo Bills WR Stefon Diggs to talk about maybe the most QB talent we’ve ever seen at one time in the NFL before they chat with Chicago Bears QB Justin Fields about improvements his team is trying to make in the offseason.

The show closes out with Matt and Austin talking with Cleveland Browns pass rusher Myles Garrett about his dog and his thoughts on more potential rule changes coming to the NFL.

Super Bowl preview, Pro Bowl recap & an early NFL Draft preview Feb 08, 2023

Show notes

Matt Harmon returns, along with Charles McDonald, to talk about everything that is going on and has gone on over the last week.

The guys kick things off by discussing the news, starting with a couple of NFL legends retiring (A.J. Green & Tom Brady) and ending with a bunch of new head coaches around the league (Frank Reich to the Panthers, Sean Payton to the Broncos, DeMeco Ryans to the Texans, etc.). They also dig in on some new coordinators, including Kellen Moore taking over the Chargers’ offense.

Charles talks about what he liked and didn’t like while on the ground in Las Vegas for the Pro Bowl festivities before telling the story of why he wasn’t able to get into this year’s Shrine Bowl, but he’s not too high on this year’s draft class anyway.

Matt and Charles then discuss some offseason and preseason takes on the Philadelphia Eagles and Kansas City Chiefs, and how both teams have made those takes look stupid in hindsight.

Finally, we end with Charles reintroducing himself to Andy Reid and talking about Mac & cheese.
