DHS warns of violent Venezuelan gang ‘Tren de Aragua’ expanding in DC area
The Department of Homeland Security has issued a bulletin to law enforcement across D.C., Maryland and Virginia concerning an illegal Venezuelan criminal gang known as ‘Tren de Aragua’ that is growing in both size and violence across the region.
The DHS internal intelligence memo concerning the gang was obtained by the New York Post. The memo states that Tren de Aragua has been connected to crimes in at least sixteen states across the country and is increasing in its “violent tendencies.”

A so-called hacker obtained the transcript of testimony from the ‘damaging’ lawfare House Ethics Committee report of Matt Gaetz, according to The New York Times.
CBS News also reported an “unknown and unauthorized third party” obtained two dozen depositions from witnesses related to the investigation into Matt Gaetz.
According to The Times, the hacker, dubbed “Altam Beezley,” obtained a tranche of documents including 24 exhibits and sworn statements from a woman who testified she had sex with Matt Gaetz when she was 17 years old.
Gaetz has denied the allegations and the Justice Department declined to bring charges after investigating the matter.

By invoking the Insurrection Act — a little-known law that grants the president sweeping authority to deploy the military on American soil — he plans to do just that.
The Posse Comitatus Act generally makes it a crime for the military to engage in domestic law enforcement. But the Insurrection Act provides a crucial exception to this rule, giving the president seemingly broad authority to deploy military forces on American soil. Historically, it has been invoked sparingly and responsibly — only 30 times in the 230 years since its inception. Most famously, the act enabled Presidents Dwight D. Eisenhower, John F. Kennedy and Lyndon Johnson to desegregate schools in the South and protect civil rights marchers to enforce court orders over the objection of state officials.
The Insurrection Act contains three triggers for military deployment. The first is relatively uncontroversial because it requires a state to explicitly request military assistance to suppress an insurrection. Brendan Carr, the Commissioner of the Federal Communications Commission, penned a letter to the CEOs of Facebook, Google, Apple, Microsoft on the central roles their companies have played in the censorship cartel.
The four page letter calls out the tech giants Facebook, Apple, Google, and Microsoft for participating in what he describes as “improper conduct.”
Carr wrote, “Big Tech companies silenced Americans for doing nothing more than exercising their First Amendment rights.” Carr accused the tech giants of “working in concert with so-called media monitors and others – to defund, demonetize and otherwise put out of business news outlets and organizations that dared to deviate from an approved narrative.”
Carr also pointed out how the tech giants were “participating in a censorship cartel that included not only technology and social media companies but advertising, marketing, and so-called “fact-checking” organizations as well as the Biden-Harris administration itself.”
Carr goes on, “The relevant conduct extended from removing or blocking social media posts to labeling whole websites or apps as “untrustworthy” or “high-risk” in an apparent effort to suppress their information and viewpoints, including through efforts to delist them, lower their rankings, or harm their profitability.
Says Carr, “This censorship cartel is an affront to Americans’ constitutional freedoms and must be completely dismantled.”

Hackers linked to a Chinese intelligence agency were able to breach T-Mobile as part of a monthslong campaign to spy on the cellphone communications of high-value intelligence targets, the Journal added, without saying when the attack took place.
“T-Mobile is closely monitoring this industry-wide attack,” a company spokesperson told Reuters in an email.
“At this time, T-Mobile systems and data have not been impacted in any significant way, and we have no evidence of impacts to customer information.”

FBI Houston announced on Thursday that agents arrested 28-year-old Anas Said at his apartment in Houston on November 8 for plotting a terror attack.
US Attorney Alamdar Hamdani said Anas Said was born in Houston but spent a lot of time in Lebanon where his family lives.
“According to court documents, multiple social media accounts linked to Said contained messages and posts that allegedly revealed that Said supported ISIS and the violent attacks carried out in its name,” the DOJ said.
Special Agent Williams said Anas Said has been on the FBI Houston’s radar since 2017.

A Federal Reserve official gave a lengthy defense of the central bank’s political independence Thursday, just days after former President Donald Trump, an outspoken Fed critic, won re-election.
“It has been widely recognized — and is a finding of economic research — that central bank independence is fundamental to achieving good policy and good economic outcomes,” Adriana Kugler, one of the seven members of the Fed’s governing board, said in prepared remarks for an economic conference in Montevideo, Uruguay.

A bill to ban Ohio’s students from using school restrooms that don’t align with their sex assigned at birth is heading to Gov. Mike DeWine after advancing at the Statehouse on Wednesday.
The Ohio Senate voted 24-7 in favor of the ban, sending the measure to DeWine’s desk for signature before it can become law. The ban had previously stood on its own as House Bill 183 and was folded into Senate Bill 104, which amends Ohio’s College Credit Plus program, when the House passed the legislation in June.
“It protects our children and grandchildren in private spaces where they are most vulnerable,” said Sen. Jerry Cirino (R-Kirtland) shortly before the bill passed. “It is us using our legislative authority to ensure schools are, in fact, safe environments.”
S.B. 104 requires academic institutions to set separate bathrooms, locker rooms and overnight accommodations based on students’ “biological sex,” meaning the sex listed on a student’s birth certificate. The bill, which also prohibits the construction of any all-gendered restrooms in schools, would go into effect 90 days after DeWine signs it.

The Department of Justice violated its own internal policies when it sent a letter—which ended up in the New York Times—warning Elon Musk’s political action committee against its $1 million voter registration giveaway in swing states, the chairman of the Federal Election Commission alleges in a letter obtained by the Washington Free Beacon.
On Oct. 23, less than two weeks before the presidential election, the Times reported that the DOJ’s Public Integrity Section sent a “warning letter” to America PAC, Musk’s political group, that a $1 million giveaway for newly registered voters might violate the law. Both the letter and the leak appear to violate DOJ policies, FEC chairman Sean Cooksey argued in a letter to DOJ inspector general Michael Horowitz.
Cooksey alleges that the DOJ’s letter to America PAC was meant to influence the outcome of the November election. In his letter, Cooksey writes that the DOJ “violated the Justice Manual’s prohibition against impermissible considerations for Department actions,” which include “timing investigative steps or criminal charges, for the purpose of affecting any election.”
Cooksey also questions whether the DOJ even had the right to send the letter, which never plainly states that Musk’s giveaway violated the law. “It is not apparent that the Department allows for its attorneys to issue ‘warning letters’ in this form,” Cooksey wrote.
Musk hasn’t been charged by the DOJ for any wrongdoing related to America PAC, which supported President-elect Donald Trump’s campaign. There’s no indication that the DOJ is actively investigating Musk’s PAC, either. Philadelphia district attorney Larry Krasner (D.) sued the group last month and claimed the giveaway violated state election law. A state judge on November 4 allowed America PAC’s giveaway to proceed, stating that the scheme was not an “illegal lottery.”

The Guardian has announced it will no longer post content on Elon Musk’s social media platform, X, from its official accounts.
In an announcement to readers, the news organisation said it considered the benefits of being on the platform formerly called Twitter were now outweighed by the negatives, citing the “often disturbing content” found on it.
“We wanted to let readers know that we will no longer post on any official Guardian editorial accounts on the social media site X,” the Guardian said.
The Guardian has more than 80 accounts on X with approximately 27 million followers.

A CIA official has been charged with leaking highly classified US documents about Israel’s potential plan to strike back against Iran over a missile attack.
Asif W. Rahman, who worked overseas for the agency and held a top secret security clearance, was arrested by the FBI in Cambodia on Tuesday over the leaks,

In the leaked message, a FEMA supervisor told workers to “avoid homes advertising Trump” as they canvassed Lake Placid, Florida to find residents who may qualify for federal aid.
The supervisor, Marn’i Washington, told workers both verbally and in a group chat to avoid Trump supporters’ homes, multiple government officials told the Daily Wire.

Hershey Cuts Full-Year Sales Outlook As Americans Dial Back On Snack Consumption
Cash-strapped consumers had no joy and happiness in the third quarter as they dialed back spending on chocolate and salty snacks produced by Hershey Co. The company slashed its net sales growth and earnings outlook after consumers balked at rising retail snack prices due to soaring cocoa costs.
Hershey reported third-quarter adjusted earnings per share of $2.34, missing the $2.56 forecast held by analysts tracked by Bloomberg. Salty snack sales in the quarter plummeted in the US, while candy sales were marginally higher.
On an earnings call on Thursday, CEO Michele Buck told investors that "pressure in the snacking categories are really driven by the consumers feeling pressured financially."

The Department of Energy last week issued another request to buy 3 million barrels of crude oil for the Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR).
The SPR contained over 630 million barrels of crude oil when President Joe Biden took office in January 2021. In the wake of the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the subsequent rise in gasoline prices ahead of midterm elections, Biden announced the largest drawdown of the SPR in history. By July 2023, the SPR was down to 288 million barrels, some of which were due to sales Congress had mandated. That was its lowest point since October 1982. Last week, the SPR had 375.4 million barrels.

Multiple Netflix Offices Raided in Alleged Tax Fraud Investigation
The offices of U.S. streaming giant Netflix were raided by tax investigators in France and the Netherlands as part of a preliminary investigation into alleged tax fraud laundering, a French judicial source revealed.
Reuters reports the French investigation, carried out by the PNF, a special financial crime prosecution unit notorious for pursuing high-stakes white-collar probes that often involve large international companies, was opened in November 2022.

Biden/Harris Deliver More Migrants than Jobs in October
Business groups created 12,000 additional jobs in September, amid an economic slowdown at the strike at Boeing. The 12,000 number was one-ninth of the 112,500 new jobs that were expected.
But Biden’s deputies also invited 49,840 more parole migrants to fly or bus into the U.S. for jobs during October. Those “parole migrants” are welcomed by the Office of Field Operations (OFO) at the ports of entry along the border.

Trump vows 25 percent tariff on Mexico unless it cracks down on border crossings
Former President Trump threatened to impose a tariff of 25 percent on all imports from Mexico, which is the top trade partner with the U.S., unless the Mexican government curbs what he called an “onslaught” of immigrants coming across the border.
“We’re being invaded by Mexico. But now we have a new president of Mexico. Supposed to — a very nice woman, they say. I haven’t met her. And I’m going to inform her on day one or sooner that if they don’t stop this onslaught of criminals and drugs coming into our country, I’m going to immediately impose a 25 percent tariff on everything they send into the United States of America,” Trump said at a rally in North Carolina.

South Korean Parliament Warns President Sending Arms To Ukraine Risks War With Kim Jong Un
"Seoul has previously resisted entreaties from western allies to draw on its vast stockpiles of military armaments, preferring to contribute to Kyiv’s war effort through non-lethal aid."
Seoul's "answer" to the north might indeed be to weaponize the other side, by providing badly needed 155mm artillery shells to Ukraine. So far this has only allegedly been done indirectly, by routing the shells to the United States. According to more from FT:
Yoon has vowed not to “sit idle” in response to the North Korean deployment. His office confirmed this week that Seoul intended to send a delegation to Ukraine to monitor the North Korean forces, following a call on Tuesday between Yoon and his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
But this has been consistently opposed by South Korea's left opposition, which maintains a parliamentary majority.

EU Caves: Europe Seeks To Strike Deal With Chinese EV Makers That Avoids Tariffs
the EU is starting to cave on preventing Chinese EV makers from doing business in Europe. Previously, the EU had sought to implement devastating tariffs on Chinese companies for supposedly skewing the European market with more supply and lower prices.
In fact, the European Union is sending officials to Beijing for further talks to explore alternatives to tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles, according to a new report from Bloomberg.
Reaching a deal to replace the new tariffs remains complex, with plans still in development but the two sides are examining a "price undertakings" agreement to regulate export prices and volumes as an alternative to tariffs.
Bloomberg writes that after eight rounds of talks, the proposals on the table still fall short of EU standards, including WTO compliance and enforceability requirements.

October Jobs Report: Private Sector Loses 28,000 Jobs, Government Gains 40,000 – August, Sept Revised Lower: 112,000 Fewer Jobs
Overall, 12,000 jobs were added. However, the private sector lost another 28,000 jobs and government gained 40,000.
Additionally, “the change in total nonfarm payroll employment for August was revised down by 81,000, from +159,000 to +78,000, and the change for September was revised down by 31,000, from +254,000 to +223,000. With these revisions, employment in August and September combined is 112,000 lower than previously reported.” [BLS Report, Table B-1]

BofA Warns "Enforcement Action" By Feds Possible Over Money Laundering, Zelle
A little more than two weeks after Toronto-Dominion Bank pleaded guilty to multiple criminal charges and paid $3 billion in fines and other penalties to the Department of Justice and financial regulators for failing to monitor money laundering operatio the Corporation's Bank Secrecy Act/anti-money laundering and sanctions compliance programs (Programs), including transaction monitoring, training, governance, and customer due diligence."
"In cooperation with regulators, the Corporation has been, and plans to continue, implementing enhancements to these Programs. The Corporation is continuing discussions with its regulators about the Programs, and resolution of these discussions may include one or more public orders by the regulators," BofA continued.
BofA is responding to an inquiry from the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau into electronic payments on the Zelle payment network.
"The CFPB staff has initiated discussions with the Corporation to pursue a resolution of the inquiry or file an enforcement action. The Corporation is evaluating next steps, including litigation," the bank said.
The filing did not mention specifics about potential AML issues. However, the TD Bank case, where the Canadian bank chose profits over AML compliance, allowed fentanyl and narcotics trafficking operations to use banking services.

U.S. Economy Grew At 2.8% Pace In Third Quarter
The U.S. economy expanded at a 2.8 percent annual pace in the third quarter, the Commerce Department said Wednesday.
Consumer spending jumped 3.7 percent in the third quarter, the largest rise in six quarters. That was much higher than the three percent expected.
Imports, which are a subtraction from GDP, soared in the third quarter. Imports of goods climbed 11.6 percent, partially reflecting U.S. importers pulling forward imports for fear that the port worker strike would be a lasting obstacle to bringing in foreign-made products. This dragged down GDP by nine-tenths of a percentage point.
Government spending was a big source of economic growth in the quarter, adding nine-tenths of a percentage point to GDP growth.
