    Woven

A chef and a theologian step up to the microphone and out flows the Woven podcast. As a former professional chef currently striving to mother as a verb, Rebecca Cochran sees life and faith through the lens of food and community. Rebecca Peet is a theologian, writer and speaker who believes intimacy with Jesus is the cure for what ails you and sees biblical knowledge as not only approachable but essential for the everywoman. With humor and vulnerability, Woven seeks to encourage women to live balanced lives right where they are- in the arms of Jesus.

Episode 20: The Middle Series- Balance (An Interview with Sandy Cooper- Part 1) Aug 14, 2018
    Show notes

This week's episode kicks off our "Middle" Series. This series will explore what it means to live in the "middle", not the extremes, when it comes to finding balance in our daily lives, living out our calling and surrendering control. Our first guest, Sandy Cooper, is here with us as we discuss what it means to find balance in our daily lives.

Sandy has been studying and teaching balance for nearly two decades, writing on the Internet since 2008, and blogging about balance since 2012. She is also the Leader of Women's Ministry at New Life Church in Louisville, a Bible study teacher, and author. Sandy writes over on her personal blog at www.thescooponbalance.com and she's recently written a Bible study entitled, Finding Your Balance.

This conversation really hit home for us and we pray that each of you will find it encouraging as well.

Episode 19: Stewardship with Information- An Interview with Dr. Angela Schaffner Aug 07, 2018
    Show notes

This week we conclude our Stewardship series with a discussion on how to steward the constant barrage of information coming at us from all ends 24/7. Social media, technology, the 24 hour news cycle, etc. are not going anywhere. In and of themselves, they are not evil and can have very positive attributes. But, we all need to learn how to steward our access to media through proper boundaries.

To help us navigate this increasingly difficult topic, we've asked our dear friend Dr. Angela Schaffner to join us again. Dr. Angela Schaffner is a licensed counseling psychologist and eating disorders specialist with over 12 years of experience at Atlanta Center for Eating Disorders. She earned her doctorate from Ball State University in Indiana and did her pre-doctoral internship at Emory University Counseling Center. She's also an adjunct professor in Mercer University's Clinical Medical Psychology program. She has published articles in professional journals such as Eating Disorders: Journal of Treatment and Prevention, and presented at national conferences on topics related to eating disorder treatment, health, and faith.

Angela discusses with us how to identify unhealthy patterns of media use and how we can put boundaries in place so we can learn how to not eliminate media usage but have a healthy relationship with technology and information.

Episode 18: Stewardship in Shopping- An Interview with Stephanie Giddens Jul 31, 2018
    Show notes

This week we welcome Stephanie Giddens to Woven as we continue along in our Stewardship series. Stephanie is the founder and president of Vickery Trading Co., a non-profit online retailer that sells clothing made by refugee woman in Dallas. The women are paid fairly and offered training, as well as mentoring, educational programs, counseling and job placement services.

Unfortunately, this type of situation is rare for the majority of those who make our clothing and consumer goods worldwide. On today's episode, we talk with Stephanie about the realities of the current state of our clothing and consumer goods, as well as her own journey from being a traditional shopper to now supporting ethical fashion practices. We define what ethical fashion means, how it's actually pretty approachable and affordable if you put a little thought into it, and discuss why we should all care about this topic. The current abundance of cheaply made clothing is something we need some guidance with in order to steward well, and we hope this episode will do just that. Links mentioned: Vickery Trading Co. Episode 16: Stewardship in Eating- An Interview with Will Harris (Part 1) Jul 17, 2018
    Show notes

This week we welcome Will Harris, owner of White Oak Pastures, to talk with us about what it means to be a good steward of the food we buy and consume. We had so much fun spending the day with Will and the rest of the crew at WOP.

Will Harris is a fourth generation cattleman, who tends the same land that his great-grandfather settled in 1866. Born and raised at White Oak Pastures, Will left home to attend the University of Georgia's School of Agriculture, where he was trained in the industrial farming methods that had taken hold after World War II. Will graduated in 1976 and returned to Bluffton where he and his father continued to raise cattle using pesticides, herbicides, hormones and antibiotics. They also fed their herd a high-carbohydrate diet of corn and soy.

These tools did a fantastic job of taking the cost out of the system, but in the mid-1990's Will became disenchanted with the excesses of these industrialized methods. They had created a monoculture for their cattle, and, as Will says, "nature abhors a monoculture." In 1995, Will made the audacious decision to return to the farming methods his great-grandfather had used 130 years before.

Since Will has successfully implemented these changes, he has been recognized all over the world as a leader in humane animal husbandry and environmental sustainability. Will is the immediate past President of the Board of Directors of Georgia Organics. He is the Beef Director of the American Grassfed Association, and was selected 2011 Business Person of the year for Georgia by the Small Business Administration.

Will lives in his family home on the property with his wife Yvonne. He is the proud father of three daughters, Jessi, Jenni, and Jodi. His favorite place in the world to be is out in pastures, where he likes to have a big coffee at sunrise and a 750ml glass of wine at sunset.

Episode 15: Stewardship- An Introduction Jul 10, 2018
    Show notes

In Episode 15, we begin our series on Stewardship. Over the next 5 weeks, we'll work through what we think it means to be good stewards of what we've been given and more specifically, we'll be discussing stewardship in the areas of food/farming, clothing/goods and technology. To kick off the series, we're discussing our personal views on stewardship. Our prayer is that this series wouldn't make anyone feel guilt or shame, but that it would open all of our eyes to the awesome responsibility God has given each of us to steward the earth and all that is in it to the best of our abilities.

Episode 14: Grace, Grace Baby Jun 26, 2018
    Show notes

This week we wrap up our Grace series with a discussion on extending grace to others. We've talked about accepting grace from God through the Cycle of Grace, we've also discussed giving grace to ourselves through self care/soul care and now we discuss showing others grace. Showing grace to others should be the fruit of acceptance and sustenance. We also know that some relationships are complicated so we also speak to boundaries and how grace and boundaries have to be in balance in all of our relationships.

Self Care is a hot buzz word these days. But, what distinguishes it from soul care and when do we know when we are creeping into selfish care territory? Jesus is clear that we are called to die to self when we become one of his disciples but he also lived out examples of how to take care of ourselves in order to be fruitful disciples. How do we live in balance between taking care of ourselves and serving others? As always, we don't have all the answers but we can share what God is teaching us in this area. Thanks for listening!

Clock WISE: The Cycle of Grace Jun 12, 2018
    Show notes

Before we can extend grace to ourselves and others, we have to learn how to receive grace from God. Most of us live our lives in the Cycle of Works, but, in the next episode in our Grace series, we will learn how to live our lives in the Cycle of Grace. We will discuss what it means to begin from a place of acceptance instead of a place of achievement. Know that you are loved!
