People ask me all the time how I find and reach out to my guests?
Two Words: Direct Messenger
Instagram DMs has completely changed the way we communicate especially in the past 5 years.
With over a billion users, there's a good chance your favorite artist, celebrity, or athlete has access to their Instagram account and direct messages.
Rather than having to search for their email, you find them on Instagram and send them a message.
People have never been more connected than we are right now and it's because of the tools of social media platforms. Direct Messenger is in my opinion such an undervalued tool.
Yeah so this all sounds super easy but what if they don't answer?
Try again...
And again.
These people are getting hit up all the time so you need to test your messaging to try and find something that cuts through the noise.
Practice makes perfect ;) so send those first 5 DMs today! And while you're at it - send me one: tiffanyparra_

Hello wonderful podcast listeners! I'm so happy to be back and creating content on a regular basis for all of you. I felt like this mini snippet was necessary as I feel a close connection with all my listeners.
New schedule for podcasts:
Week One:
Work in Progress sit down interviews + videos drop on Monday morning! I will be interviewing the most interesting people in fashion, business, tech, production, and more!
Week Two:
Real Talk livestream interviews on Instagram live featuring a new guest every other week on Tuesday at 8:30 PM PST or 11:30 EST. You can hop in to ask questions and interact with the guest and myself. Episodes uploaded in podcast format on Fridays.
I'll also occasionally do solo podcasts but those won't be as structured and will be uploaded on a free-form schedule.
Can't wait to share this season's guests with everyone!
Chris Drama Pfaff is the founder of Young and Reckless and host of Short Story Long where he sits down with incredible people to learn more about their journey and also co host of Group Chat where him and his business partners Dee and Anand talk current events culture, fashion, and more.
Drama came to LA and quickly made a name for himself as a the assistant to Rob Dydrek in the hit MTV reality tv show rob and big. In this episode, we talk about what it was like for an 18 year old Drama to move from Akron Ohio to LA, the MTV days, and tactical advice to help anyone with an interest in starting their own brand.
Make sure to follow me for more content featuring incredible entrepreneurs and creatives like drama and of course check out Drama’s instagram and podcasts. His content has helped me a lot and I’m sure it’ll help you too.
Stay tuned for this special episode of the Work in Progress podcast.

Hi everyone! Thank you for joining me for #74 of the Work in Progress podcast. I decided to go solo this episode and highlight some essential parts to my morning routine.
Here they are:
Free Writes: these free writes are basically a mind dump where you write down any thoughts for 10 or 15 minute. I've found that they've helped me identify to-dos I forgot about, allow me to write down my thoughts and emotions, and overall allow me to start my day with a clear head.
5 Things I am Grateful For: this practice of gratitude has helped me train my mind to see the good in situations. There's always something to be grateful for. Sometimes the times where you're struggling are actually the best because that means you're learning to overcome new hurdles.
Affirmations: this is one that I never thought I'd personally do but if you listen to stories of people who write down their affirmations/ life accomplishments it's pretty wild. I write down these mission statements as if they've already happen because they have, time just hasn't caught up yet. For example. if you dream of being a tech entrepreneur your affirmation is... "I am the CEO of a successful app that is in the top 10 on the App Store."
Working Out: I didn't mention it on the podcast but working out in the mornings is a serious game changer and is the single most vital part of my morning. Cardio exercise like running really helps reduce my anxiety and makes me feel like I can tackle any problem headed my way.
At the end of the day, these are things that work for me but it's still a process! Accept that you will have failures and you will have wins, but you are on a journey to improve yourself and change is not an overnight process.
Had to repost one of my favorite interviews from 2018. Brema has an incredible story and an outlook on life that I think many of us could learn from (myself included.) I've been really busy with building my new business, Scrunchies.co so the Real Talk series is on a bit of a pause.
Brema Brema is one of the founding members of the Urban Misfit Ventures and an overall badass creative.
Brema grew up in a refugee camp in Sudan and with the help of the United Nations he and his family were able to move to the United States.
Initially, he didn't fit in and was bullied at school.
But rather than use that negative energy in a harmful way, Brema invested his focus into art.
From negative -> positive.
Talking with Brema you can tell he's a humble guy but one look at his Instagram page @optic.legacy (currently at 58,000 followers) and you can see how talented he is in his work.
Throughout the years, Brema has built up a portfolio of creative passions from skating -> graffiti -> clothing -> photography. Regardless his work is visually aesthetic and uniquely him.
He is currently a creative director at the Urban Misfit Ventures and founder of his own clothing line @unfinishedlegacy. At only 20 years old, Brema was named one of Wisconsin's 25 Under 25 Rising Entrepreneurs.

Jessica DeLorenzo is the sales director and co founder at Stickersthatstick a sticker company with a vast customer base including small artists and large corporate clients.
They offer a variety of custom stickers and labels including Vinyl, Heavy Duty, Mirror Chrome, and my personal favorite Holographic.
Her and her husband Mark DeLorenzo were already running a motorcycle parts business when they entered into the custom business with a partner back in 2009.
In the age of entrepreneurship being a trend it was great to speak with someone about the lessons learned while creating a business that has been around for 10 years and continues to grow.

What's up guys?! As we wrap up month one of 2019, it's time to sit back and reflect on if we've been acting on our goals. I decided to repost one of my favorite Real Talk episodes because I think this episode is super relevant to many people especially as we head into 2019. The reality is: You don't have time, you make time. If you don't make time to work towards your goals then you will fail. It's harsh but it's as simple as that. What do you think of the solo rants? Do you like them? Leave me a feedback on the Apple Podcast app reviews and let me know!! Repost Info: I believe it was winter of 2017 when I watched this Ted Talk by Laura Vanderkam called How to Gain Control of Your Free Time. I was sitting in my room with no internship lined up for that summer. Then it hit me.. I was creating this false narrative that I didn't have enough time to look for a job not because I was actually too busy but because deep down it was not a priority. When you say I don't have time for x. What you really mean is I don't prioritize x. The second you accept what you value and how that aligns with your time management is the moment you take control over your time. As I sit here at 12:15 AM writing these show notes, I am awake because this podcast is a priority to me. Send this podcast to someone who may be struggling to find time in their day! For this special in person podcast I traveled to Berkeley, CA to pay a visit to the brains behind the GOODFISHING operation.
In 5 years, GOODFISHING went from concept to selling out their clothes on their online webstore (www.good-fishing.co)
The brand was founded by bestfriends Vicken Donikian & Samuel Bostick who met on the first day of college and have been co-collaborators ever since.
ABOUT GOODFISHING:
Attractively Simple clothing & goods -- for the kid who never wants to grow up, and the adult who never did!
GOOD FISHING represents a catchy, lighthearted take on the spirit of sport fishing; a willingness to cast your line and embrace life's uncertainties as you explore the currents and see what you reel in.
Good Fishing launched in the summer of 2017 as a multifaceted, homegrown clothing label rooted in Berkeley, CA. We design and present products with an imaginative, youthful energy, and we work with ethical manufacturing practices that support humanity and the earth.
Our collection is led by a roster of organic cotton graphic tees that are amazingly soft, comfortable and durable - staple pieces intended for all around wear.
At its core, Good Fishing stands for Attractively Simple products created for the kid who never wants to grow up, and the adult who never did.

Kenzo Sobrie (@knzo on Instagram) began his journey in entreprenuership by selling pokemon cards in the 1st grade.
By 8th grade he was selling his own print-on t-shirts.
But everything really changed for Kenzo in November of 2017 when he met his mentor mentor Jeff Bunting.
He invested over $4,000 in order to learn Ebay dropshipping.
Kenzo graduated high school 2 years early and while waiting for the college semester to start he would devote hours everyday to listing items on eBay.
He scaled that concept into over 5 figures and eventually 6 figures.
At that point, Kenzo decided to enter Amazon FBA ( a form of selling that involves fulfillment by Amazon)
If you want to know about this young entrepreneur make sure to check out the full episode…

Shay Rowbottom is the co-founder of Margle Media, a fast growing social-media marketing startup out of Milwaukee that specializes in viral video creation.
Shay originally dropped out of college to pursue her aspirations of becoming a musician, but after years struggling to make it and finding herself dissatisfied with her progress in the entertainment industry, she came across an opportunity to learn viral video editing for large blogs on Facebook.
Her life and business partner, Luke Marlowe, and her first began scaling the model in their bedroom in downtown Milwaukee, in the Spring of 2016. They have since scaled the business, which now has over 30 employees, servicing companies such as Petco and MGM providing social media marketing campaigns and daily video content for their social media pages.
Margle Media distributes around 2,000 videos per month and now averages over 1 Billion views per month on their content.

Since I'm currently on a family vacation in Vermont, I decided to repost one of my favorite episodes from 2018 in case any new listeners haven't heard this one.
“Instead of dropping out, you’re actually dropping into something”
I interviewed Leann Abad and Sarah Grosz for the podcast and they explained that dropping out of college was not about disconnecting from education.
Rather it was a way for them to further their education in their respective fields.
For Leann, that meant dropping out to work on his startup Ashe media.
For Sarah, that meant moving across the country to work full-time as a growth hacker BAMF media.
The stigma behind college drop outs being lazy or unmotivated could not be further from the truth.
In some ways I envy those who have dropped out of college.
Because going against the grain of what society has deemed “the right choice” to pursue the unknown takes courage.
But, more importantly it takes #selfawareness and as young people that’s what we should be chasing down more than anything.

From negative -> positive.

Welcome to episode 51 of the Work in Progress podcast Yoshi Tabata grew up with both his parents being deaf. This played into his love for music and he found music as the outlet to express himself. At only 15 years old, Yoshi dropped out of high school and moved out of his parents house to pursue his dream of making it in the music industry. Yoshi went from being a rapper to working at Google AdWords to music management to now working as a full-time videographer. Yoshi was never afraid to make the next big step whether that was a career switch or moving to an entirely new state. With the rise of technology, social media has proven to be a dominating force in recent years. The ability to amplify your thoughts and perspective to the internet at this scale has never been done until now. Some of us passively use Instagram to stay connected with friends and family. Others have built entire businesses off the platform. Jade Darmawangsa started her first Youtube channel at the age of 9. At 16, she dropped out of high school to pursue entrepreneurship full-time. Jade currently helps individuals and e-commerce brands step up their online digital marketing strategies. She's also the leader of her loyal fanbase called #DarmaNation. Jade has a knack for storytelling and building brands across platforms. In 2018, she was awarded YouTuber Creator on the Rise and has grown her channel to over 100K subscribers. Whether you're a high school senior or college graduate we've all had those, "now what?!" moments. The future is scary and can cause a lot of anxiety. What's super crucial in these moments is to be true to yourself and continue hustling on the things you find enjoyable. If you have to find a full-time job to support your side hustle then my #1 tip for kicking off your career is: Don't apply to all of your time applying to jobs. Create content surrounding your story. Be relatable and open-minded. I guarantee people will reach out to provide you some valuable guidance along the way. ❓Are you approaching graduation and figuring life out? Imagine going on a cross country road trip but with no navigation… It would seem pretty impossible, right? That’s kind of what it’s like navigating your career journey without a mentor is like. Mentors are there to guide you along the way and help you in those “omg what do I do moments” I’ll be honest finding a good mentor is no easy task. It’s an unstructured process with a lot of trial and error. But the best part of mentorship is that it can come from anywhere- a professor, a manager, a LinkedIn connection, etc. So what does it mean to have a good mentor? According to Tim Salau on Ep.47 of Work in Progress (link in the first comment) ⚡️A good mentor listens ⚡️A good mentor starts acting like a sponsor on your behalf by connecting you to other people and creating opportunities ⚡️A good mentor holds you accountable 🔥🔥Tim's Info: www.facebook.com/groups/MentorsMentees/ https://www.facebook.com/thetimsalau/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/timsalau🔥🔥 ⚡️ Connect with me: linkedin.com/in/tiffanyparra/ ⚡️Follow me on IG: @tiffanyparra_ ⚡️$upport the podcast: www.patreon.com/work_in_progress ⚡️Join my community for podcasters: bit.ly/LIpodcasts ⚡️Want to know what gear I use to produce the podcast? kit.com/TiffanyParra ⚡️Tune in this Wednesday at November 28th 8 PM PST for another Real Talk livestream on Instagram.⚡️
As the internet has become more and more prevalent in our society, there's been a big debate on college and if the price matches up with the value. Personally, as a first generation American my parents always viewed college as the gateway to a better life. Now with social media platforms like Instagram and YouTube, more and more internet savvy teens are deciding to start their own businesses instead of studying business in college. Whether you believe in college or not, one thing is for sure: going to class and getting good grades is not enough. If you're passionate about a given field than you have to gain the real-world experience outside the classroom. This can be done through internships, part-time jobs, or creating your own projects. For me, that meant running 6 different social media accounts at once to figure out how to create good, compelling content. ❓What's your opinion on college? Send me a DM and let me know! As my skateboard laid on the edge of the cement half-pipe, I had one thought, “This will be the last attempt, I’m going to land it this time.” The next thing I knew I was lifting my face from the ground and there was blood everywhere. My failed attempt at dropping in at the skatepark cost me $700 in medical expenses and 4 stitches under my chin. Skateboarding is arguably one of the most brutal sports. We all want results fast. How can we buy something that will make us richer, better, smarter faster? Well, it doesn't exist. 🤔 Long-term goals may not be "sexy" but they're necessary. When you know what you're striving for you'll know if your current situation aligns with that. I've seen people quit jobs after a month or quit on projects because there was "no point in wasting time." The reality is if a project or job is helping you build foundation skills for your long-term vision then it's worth holding out a couple months or a year. The biggest distraction I see within my generation in terms of the short-term is.. money. 🌟 My opinion is this: working for free and learning from someone you look up to is 1000% more valuable than being paid minimum wage. 🌟 As Gary Vee says, "it's about the macro not the micro" When you're in tune with the macro, you're unstoppable because you're not working for tomorrow your working a greater vision and purpose. *** I will be going Instagram live every Thursday at 9 PM to record Real Talk. When you see a wall in front of you, you have 3 options: 1. Turn around and go back in the direction you came. 2. Break it down. 3. Walk around it. Julian Gambao's story is a perfect representation of what can happen when you choose to take a creative approach to a big life problem. From a young age, he was inspired by Coca Cola's impeccable advertising campaigns and knew advertising would be his career path. He put in all the necessary work and attended one of the top universities in the country, Berkeley. After 2 years at Berkeley, Julian applied to the Walter A. Haas School of Business. Suddenly, Julian had faced a massive wall. He was denied from the business school. Suddenly, his plan to study marketing at Berkeley was ruined. Julian was at a crossroads. Would he have to leave Berkeley (a school he had worked hard for his entire life to get into)? Julian decided to walk around the wall and majored in American Studies with a thesis in Marketing. What's even better: he went back to the same business school in which he was denied and decided to run his own marketing course that was open to students from all majors. Check out this episode to learn the behind-the-scenes work of advertising, what it takes to build out and lead a course, and more. ~ Please let me know what you think of this episode by leaving a review!~ Julian's info: Twitter: @juliangumbo LinkedIn: linkedin.com/in/juliangamboa7 Connect with me: linkedin.com/in/tiffanyparra/ Follow me on IG: @tiffanyparra_ $upport the podcast: www.patreon.com/work_in_progress Join my community for podcasters: http://bit.ly/LIpodcasts
We all have those days (or weeks) where it feels like nothing is going our way. Last week was one of those weeks for me. I had lost my car keys on my trip to Arizona and spent the whole week frustrated that I could not happen. Here are 3 things I did to get myself out of the negativity of last week: 🔑Recognized that I was in a slump. I knew my situation was temporary and therefore I knew eventually there would be a resolution. 🔑 Communicated my feelings and outlined expectations with my friends and family. 🔑 Put a time limit on how long I was going to allow this situation to affect me. *** I will be going Instagram live every Thursday at 9 PM to record Real Talk. It’s 10x easier to say yes than to say no. Especially when the person asking is a friend. Business is not always black and white. It’s a people-centered industry and fostering relationships is a big part of it. So how do you say no to someone who you’re friends with? Natalie Riso graduated USC as the #1 most followed student on the platform. Her advice for people on how to say no: 🔑 Separate the opportunity from the person. Listen to Natalie’s full interview for season 2 of the Work in Progress podcast. (most recent episode) This snippet is probably the single most important part of my interview with Natalie. It's easy to feel pressured into saying yes because you have built a relationship with someone but in order to respect yourself and the project saying no is apart of the process. Natalie Riso went from ghost writing LinkedIn posts as part of a summer internship to being the #1 most followed student on the platform. She has been on the platform for three years now and has seen evolved over time especially with the introduction of video. Natalie is undoubtedly one of the hardest working people I know. After graduating from USC, she has started her full-time role at Studio71 as a Content Marketing Strategist. Outside of work, she regularly plans and speaks at events across North America on social media, mental health, and women in leadership. I believe it was winter of 2017 when I watched this Ted Talk by Laura Vanderkam called How to Gain Control of Your Free Time. “Instead of dropping out, you’re actually dropping into something” I interviewed Leann Abad and Sarah Grosz for the podcast and they explained that dropping out of college was not about disconnecting from education. After being rejected from all the conservatories which he applied to. Coy White decided to buy a ticket to the UK. Unfortunately, things didn’t get much easier from there. As a BMX rider, Coy wanted to fulfill his dreams of traveling and riding his bike in unseen streets. But, it just seemed like he couldn’t catch a break. Transporting the bike internationally was a nightmare and finding individuals nearby in the action sports scene was even tougher. That being said, there are two very important silver linings that came out of this trip: He got to stay at BMX legend, Danny MacAskill’s flat in Scotland (so cool!!) The trip served as a catalyst for him to launch Sprackle, an app for action sports athletes to connect and build community worldwide. It all started with an InMail titled “Podcast Guest” back in April. Life got hectic so I made a mental note to respond, but forgot. One month later, I reached back out to Brandon Marquez to see if we could set up an interview for his podcast the 2 Americans. In that episode I share my personal background and discuss the opportunity that lies in social media. I had no clue that the response would be so huge. Over 100,000 downloads later and suddenly Work in Progress was #3 on the iTunes top charts under the Arts category. If I had ignored that InMail, Work in Progress would have missed a valuable opportunity. But more important than that, Brandon and I would’ve never become friends. Stay humble and remain open-minded because collaboration is the secret to any successful project. Brandon's podcast:https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/the-two-americans-podcast/id1208313633?mt=2 We discussed monetization strategies, how to build an email list, and the secret to any success.

There are many life lessons in the story of how Leann Abad met Gary Vaynerchuck. It all began with understanding that if you want for something you have to work for it. A lesson Leann learned through competing in different sports throughout his youth. When Leann was a freshman at the University of Michigan, he snuck into a tailgate to meet the owner of the Miami Dolphins, Steve Ross. That planted the seed of meeting Gary Vee. For months, he would tweet & email Gary with no response. Finally, after sending a clever email that showcased his social proof- Gary agreed to meet. Leann's advice for outreaching to busy people? Figure out their schedule via social media and reach out to them while they're traveling. I love this story because it demonstrates Leann's grit, hustle, and unwillingness to settle. Leann is the founder of Ashe Media and runs a podcast called Michigan Makers. Leann's info: http://www.ashe.media http://LinkedIn.com/in/leannabad sub: eepurl.com/dzbVnz

"I wanted to start a podcast because I love people's stories, I love connecting with them..." Justin Ngyuen is one of the creators behind the @GetChoGrindUp Instagram movement and a host on the Young and D.U.M.B Podcast. Justin and his team of two other college students strive to inspire and provide mentorship to the next generation. There are many parallels between Justin and I's story. Our parents were both immigrants to America which is a major motivating factor for us. We both had worked hard in our first 3 years of college which afforded the leisure of time to experiment in our senior years. We both created projects in the hopes of inspiring our peers to act on their passions. The crazy thing is Justin and I would have never met if it were not for the internet. Finn Thormeier and I first spoke over FaceTime last February. At that time Finn was a 21 year old who had recently dropped out of college and was dedicating a large amount of time into learning about cryptocurrency. I knew there was something special about Finn in that initial conversation. He had a unique honesty about himself and his day-to-day life. He’s taken this approach to social media and has been able to cut through the noise by simply being his authentic self. Fast forward to now, Finn is living in NYC creating content and trusting his gut every step of the way. Boasting at over 35,000 followers on Instagram, Finn helps others establish their own personal brands on the platform. Being an entrepreneur is not all rainbows and butterflies. It takes serious grit and hustle. From an Easy-Bake Oven to operating 3 kiosk locations across North Carolina, this week’s Work in Progress guest was able to scale her passion for baking into a long-term business. I sat down to talk with my friend, Jessica Wei, to find out what inspired her to create her own magazine titled Vistal. Jessica's magazine focuses on one central aspect to any great project: Collaboration. Here are 3 takeaways from this episode on effective communication when collaborating with others: 👥 Establish a friendly rapport. It's much easier to go for the ask, when you know the person and there is a relationship built. 👥 Be understanding. Understanding other team member's commitments will help you create a message that is more likely to get results. 👥 Don't lose sight of deadlines. This is your project so your teacher or boss isn't going to hunt you down if you don't make the deadline. But, a good #PassionProject has a timeline with expectations and goals. “I think something people don’t think about when going into social media is that need for patience. When I say that, I mean patience in creating something that you are proud of instead of just throwing something together to put it out there quickly.” When I think of social media, patience is not the first word that comes to mind. But, that is what's great about having talented friends. They teach you. They inspire you to be better. Cara Benson is a senior at Cal Poly where she is pursuing a degree in Journalism.
