Breaking Ice and Breaking Glass Jul 06, 2021
    Show notes

Title nine changed Sandra's future. It opened doors to women allowing them to be in sports. She had always been a tomboy following her brothers around and this gave her the opportunity to participate. A neighbor brought over a newspaper article about the Naval Academy opening for women and she had her sights set on attending. And then her guidance counselor shared a flyer about the Coast Guard Academy. She applied and was accepted. Her mom encouraged her to attend.

She was part of the third class of cadets with women. The senior class without women often touted themselves as a better class because they didn't have women. It was challenging, but it was challenging for everyone. The lesson from the Academy that guided her life was to take it one step at a time. Not to look too far in the future. Just get to the next meal, the next class, the next day. Four years felt overwhelming. But she could get to the next day. This was something she used throughout her career.

    Breaking Ice

Her first assignment was on an ice breaker and she was able to go to Antarctica and see other parts of the world on the trip to and from Antarctica. She had so many amazing memories. But one that stood out was when she struggled to qualify. Not because she wasn't qualified. But because her commander wanted her to be more aggressive in her leadership. She tried to change her personality but it didn't work for her. Eventually, the commander realized she was qualified even if she didn't lead with the same style he did.

Eventually, it was time to go back to shore duty and she ended up at a staff job working on building the next Ice Breaker. She loved her job so much when given the opportunity to work for the head of the Department of Transportation. She resisted going but was chosen. And could not believe what doors it would open and how it would change her career. She was able to see the Coast Guard as part of the larger Transportation department instead of being laser-focused on the Coast Guard.

    Deciding what she wanted

She had been looking to go back to command a ship but when she thought about what she wanted she realized as much as she loved being at sea. It was the people that she enjoyed the most. She wanted to give back and applied to be the commanding officer for recruit training and also being the Superintendent of the Coast Guard Academy. She was the first person to sit in both roles. And while she expected her career to end after her four-year assignment she was given the opportunity to promote to Vice Admiral (3 stars) and serve as the Deputy Commandant for Mission Support.

    Giving back through leadership

She has wanted to write Breaking Ice and Breaking Glass since she was in her twenties but knew she couldn't do it while serving. So when she retired she started writing. Her new book was released on June 1st and is meant to help those in the middle of a career. She gives leadership lessons that help people to continue forward and not quit. Sometimes people quit for the wrong reasons. And it goes back to thinking about what you want. Maybe you are not in the right place based on your passions. But if it is hard and you don't want to push forward take it one step at a time like Sandra did to get through the Coast Guard Academy. You can do so much more than you know.

Beyond thank you for your service Jun 29, 2021
    Show notes

Kathy served in the Air Force for 29 years. She served on active duty, in the Reserves and National Guard. She also was a military spouse. The led to the challenge of continually moving throughout her career as she followed her now ex-husband's military career. It was challenging.

She served six years on active duty. Quickly realizing with both her and her spouse serving it would be challenging to both serve on active duty. She decided to transfer to the Reserves which was great because it kept her connected, but still caused a lot of planning and coordination. She never deployed overseas but was assigned to backfill various roles and worked to ensure her family was taken care of while she continued to serve.

    Always being new

But it was hard to rebuild a community with each new assignment. Not only was she working to support her family. She also needed to fit in her new assignment. Continually being the new person filling the role needed.

When her husband retired they were able to start a business and life in Ohio and she began to realize how different her life was from her neighbors. At forty a friend died in an accident and at the funeral, she realized she hadn't been to a funeral for most of her adult life. She was disconnected from her community.

    Bridge the gap

She took a role at the Ohio National Guard community outreach program. As she began to work with the community she realized there was a valuable tool not being used by the military. The civilian community. That is why she wrote her book and why she created Vanguard Veteran. The work she does to help connect the civilian community and the military is helping to bridge the gap between those communities.

A Military Nurse in the Army Jun 22, 2021
    Show notes

Tif enlisted into the Army while in high school and attended boot camp the summer between her junior and senior year. Her recruiter told her about the Reserve Officer Training Corps Program (ROTC) in the fall of her senior year and encouraged her to apply. She was able to continue serving in the Army through the Reserves and her ROTC time counted the Reserve requirement. After graduation, she became an Army nurse.

She met her husband in college via ROTC. For their first assignment, they were able to get stationed together in Germany. She spent four years in the Army and worked as a nurse in the hospital. Although, she planned to serve twenty years in the military everything changed as she became a mom. And then when September 11th happened it brought more future challenges. She covers the challenges of leaving a five and half week old baby in daycare. And the challenge she found going back to work so quickly was only intensified when the possibility of deployment became more likely with the events of September 11th. She decided that the best choice for herself and her family was to leave the military.

    Leaving the military

Leaving the military, even though the right choice, was not easy. She talks about being blue for the first six months and how she leaned into the struggle she was feeling. Luckily with a nursing degree she could continue working and be able to be there for her family. Her husband continues to serve in the military and has deployed or traveled throughout his career. When she was pregnant with her fourth child she started to pursue a career in writing. She had always loved to write but never followed that passion.

    Nurse to writer

It took a lot of hard work to find where she wanted to go with her writing. Today, she is a fiction author. She has written six books and is currently signed to write four more books. In her newest book, In a Book Club Far Away, she covers the military community through the eyes of a fictional military spouse club centered around a book club. The three main characters bounce back and forth between their stories and the past and present day.

As a military spouse and veteran, it was amazing to see the main characters as military spouses and one of the three main characters was serving on active duty while married to a service member. The depiction of characters resonated with me. You can read my full review here.

Military Dad in the Navy Jun 15, 2021
    Show notes

    Military Dad in the Navy

David joined the Navy right after high school because he wanted to go to college. He did not have a way to pay for college and saw the military as an opportunity to get his degree paid for. He ended up excelling in the Navy and was able to get accepted to a program to go back to school, earn his degree, and become an officer in the Navy. When he came back in he was Naval Flight Officer as a Tactical Coordinator.

September 11th happened while attending college. The Navy changed from being open with minimal security along with a higher ops tempo than before. He loved the work he was doing and deployed around the world for various missions. One mission that he shared about was when they were off the coast of Libya. There they helped to coordinate with the Libyan military who provided the ground forces and the US Marines provided air support. They were able to help liberate Libya from ISIS control.

He got married and had his first child while in college. And they moved through flight school and training until they arrived in Florida. David was able to spend most of his career in Florida and for the tours outside of Florida, he geo-bached to help his family have stability and not have to move. This is a sacrifice a military dad may make to help support his family. The first time was for a tour he knew that he would be gone most of the time. He ended up being deployed/training approximately twenty out of twenty-four months and it was better for his family not to move.

He would travel home on weekends when he could and got creative so he could spend time with his family. The next assignment wasn't as high ops but his oldest was starting high school and they decided they did not want to make everyone move. He was able to travel home from Virginia for long weekends and used leave time to spend more time at home. He ended his career in Florida and now works for Bank of America.

Transitioning out of the military was not easy. He had a community and knew where he was going to live. But he didn't have a plan on where he was going to work. He attributes his success today to Operation New Uniform. There he was able to learn about figuring out what he wanted to do. He also learned about writing a resume. And it was through networking that he was able to land a job at Bank of America. One piece of advice he shared for transition veterans was to think about timetables. For example, Bank of America starts looking for new hires for the next year in late summer early fall. If you start looking for a job when you leave the military it makes takes more time than you expect before the job openings are filled.
