    Indigenous Women: Sarah Winnemucca Nov 30, 2021

    Sarah Winnemucca (1844-1891) was an educator, author, and advocate who worked as an interpreter and fought to protect Indigenous rights. When she died, the New York Times called her “the most remarkable woman among the Piutes of Nevada.”

    Annie Dodge Wauneka (1910-1997) was a prominent leader in the Navajo community, and a voice for Navajo people in the US government. She worked to improve the health of people in her community, while respecting and preserving Navajo culture.

    Maria Tallchief (1925-2013) was the first Indigenous ballerina in history to receive international recognition. She was the highest paid ballet dancer in her time and gave new life to the American ballet scene.
