David Colturi, Cliff Diver Jun 11, 2019
    Show notes

"I am scared of the potential consequences of a cliff dive gone wrong almost as much as having to hold a nine to five office job.” As a member of Red Bull’s Cliff Diving circuit, David Colturi’s “9-5” is jumping out of the equivalent of an eight story building (or roughly 90 feet) at some of the most picturesque destinations in the world. After becoming friends in Red Bull’s High Performance training facility, Payson and David decided to sit down for a podcast one evening following their respective gym sessions. They talk similarities and differences between their sports, dives gone wrong, how David ended up on the circuit, “cliff diving” from a paraglider, comparing various stories of breaking their bodies in search of glory and much, much more.

Lael Wilcox, ultra endurance cyclist Jun 04, 2019
    Show notes

Born and raised in Anchorage, Alaska, Lael Wilcox is the best female ultra-endurance cyclist in the world. Her most notable accomplishments include winning the 4,300 mile Trans Am Bike Race outright (after passing the lead male rider in the final miles) and setting the record for the 2,750 mile Tour Divide (after riding thousands of miles to the race start from her home in Alaska). She has spent the past eleven years traveling the world on her bicycle, logging over 100,000 miles in 35 countries. In addition to racing and riding, Lael puts a lot of effort into getting more women on bikes. She organizes a teenage girls bicycle adventure program in her hometown and has hosted two international women’s scholarships. Payson sat down with Lael the day before Dirty Kanza, where she went on to win the DKXL. They chat about redefining mental limits of endurance, the wacky logistics of ultra racing, her epic duel in the final miles to win Trans-Am, and getting more women on bikes. They end their conversation with some questions that were sent in by her fans and some legends of the sport, such as Rebecca Rusch.

Gary Fisher, inventor of the modern mountain bike May 20, 2019
    Show notes

"Inventor of the mountain bike" is a mantle Gary Fisher resists, but you'd be hard-pressed to find a more deserving owner of the title. In this colorful chat, Gary tells Payson about the humble beginnings of the "klunker" and the first company he started called "Mountain Bikes." He describes why the bike can solve many of the world's problems, and where he hopes it will lead us next. While discussing his early life, Gary takes us up close and personal with some of the biggest names of the 1960's hippie movement, including what it was like to witness the Altamont incident involving The Hell's Angels and The Rolling Stones. And of course, they discuss the intricacies of mustache maintenance, when even Payson is forced to admit that Gary's legendary facial hair cannot be rivaled.

Tommy Caldwell, climbing legend May 06, 2019
    Show notes

Tommy Caldwell is considered by most to be the greatest big wall free climber of all time. In 2015 he and his climbing partner Kevin Jorgeson were the first to complete the "Dawn Wall" in Yosemite National Park, which is thought to be the most challenging free climb in the world. But Tommy's adventure experiences span far beyond that, from being held hostage by a rebel militia in Central Asia, to an injury that should have ended his climbing career, to accomplishments that have repeatedly redefined what was possible in the sport. Payson met Tommy at his home in Estes Park, CO to get inside the mind of one of the worlds greatest adventurers. They discuss Tommy's unconventional childhood, what it's like spending seven years trying to climb a single route, and how his career has changed since becoming a father.

Sepp Kuss, Howard Grotts, and Chris Blevins Apr 30, 2019
    Show notes

Sepp Kuss, Howard Grotts, and Chris Blevins are three of Payson's best friends, and also some of the most accomplished professional cyclists in the world. All three Durango, CO natives, Payson moved to their hometown when he was eighteen, and enjoyed having them as teammates, friends, and competitors during some their most formative years coming up through the pro ranks. After winning multiple national titles on the mountain bike, Sepp Kuss moved to the road, where he enjoyed a meteoric rise. Now riding for ProTour outfit Team Jumbo-Visma, Sepp enjoyed enormous success in 2018, winning the Tour of Utah and completing his first grand tour, the Vuelta a España. Howard Grotts is an Olympian, World Championship medalist, World Cup winner, many time national champion, winner of the Cape Epic, and member of the Specialized Factory mountain bike team. His teammate, Chris Blevins though a few years younger than the other three has racked up a national title list in the twenties and also medaled at the World Championships. With Payson the current defending XC Marathon national champion, Howard current XC national champion, and Chris current STXC national champion, all three mountain bike titles were represented at this very laid back, fireside chat. It was a relatively typical offseason night for the four cyclists that involved a good number of brews, only this time it was caught on a recorder.
