65. MYSTERY: What Happened in Room 1046? Aug 27, 2021

In 1935, a peculiar young man named Roland T. Owen checked into room 1046 at the Hotel President in Kansas City, Missouri. Two nights later, he was dead. This is no typical murder story. As it turns out, Roland T. Owen was a fake name, and even when they learned the true identity of the dead man, that didn’t shed any light on what he was doing in Kansas City, why he was murdered, or who might want him dead.

61. MURDER: A Survivor's Story Aug 17, 2021

Back when we first started the podcast, Brook Fisher contacted Kara about a shocking murder that happened in Kentucky in the summer of 1999. Today’s sidepiece is about what happened to Brook’s family, but it’s also about empathy and resilience. Brook—you are such a light.

UPDATE 8/25/21: Terry's sister has contacted us and objects to her brother, or his serious mental illness, being exploited for the personal and/or emotional gain of anyone else. We discussed taking this episode down, but ultimately we decided that the discussion about mental health in this episode was important to us. Not all crimes are black and white. When it comes to mental health, the way our society views mental illness and the systems in place to help those who suffer from it both need a substantial amount of work. We sincerely apologize to anyone who feels that we are exploiting a person or his mental illness—it is certainly not our intent, but we recognize that it’s a painful topic. For more on our thoughts about the complexities of true crime as a podcast topic, please refer to Episode 64.

60. MYSTERY: The Disappearance of Bryce Laspisa Aug 13, 2021

Nineteen-year-old Bryce Laspisa was last seen on August 30, 2013, after a string of unusual behavior led him to the interstate, traveling to his parents house after multiple contacts with his parents and police.
