    Birding Punks | Self-imposed Outsiders Jun 15, 2020
    Show notes

On this episode of Birding Punks, Paul and Tony discuss what we hope is imminent and longstanding social change spurred by the murder of George Floyd and change in the birding community via Black Birders Week inspired by the threat of police violence on Christian Cooper. The Birding Punks reflect on being self imposed outsiders and whether the bird community should reform existing or start new birding organizations to be truly inclusive.

Urban Wildlife Podcast | Mouse History is Human History Jun 15, 2020
    Show notes

We take a look at one of our most humble companions in civilization, the house mouse. Michelle Niedermeier of the Penn State Cooperative Extension’s Integrated Pest Management program joins Billy as we talk about research into how mouse genetics can help us learn about human history . We spend some time with John James Audubon’s fabulous mouse chapter from the Viviparous Quadrupeds of North America (v. 2, p. 277). Just for kicks, we’ve included a reading from the last episode in which we discussed mice: Lawrence Crawford helps us wax poetic about mice (in Scots, so read along and click on the unfamiliar words) with the immortal Robert Burns.

These structures, comprised of plants and shellfish and supported by engineered structures, help improve wildlife habitat, combat erosion and rising water levels, improve water quality, and increase fisheries. Josh and Tony go way back in the punk scene and also discuss how the "do it yourself" punk ethic can be applied to academics and ecology.
