As he became a young man, he held on to his childhood ideals and ultimately became a college dropout...but sometimes all it takes is one person to stoke your internal flame and redirect you to your place of passion.     On this, our last installment of the powerful words series, we close out with a King delivering the words of a King. Martin Luther King III reads and performs for all of us the powerful words from his father last sermon from the pulpit of Ebenezer Baptist Church. The sermon is called the Drum Major Instinct and from its call for police to stand with black citizens to its discussion of how many of us fight to keep up with the "Jones's" it is hyper relevant.

    During this session, there were moments that i had tears in my eyes. None more so than when Martin himself get a little chocked up as he read through his fathers words about his own funeral which we now know would end up being only a couple of months later. In this session, I realized that to us Dr Martin Luther King Jr was this larger than life figure that we respect and hold high because of what he did - but to MLKIII he was simply Dad. You get a chance to feel the real emotion in Martin when you realize that much like i miss my own father he misses his own.

    74: A Voice For Atlanta's Missing and Murdered Children w/Atlantis Filmworks Mar 15, 2020

    In Atlanta GA between 1979 and 1981 approximately 2 dozen black children were abducted and murdered. To this day no one has been charged with ANY of these murders and the many stories that have been told primarily ignore the perspective of the voices that matter most - those of the victims and their families.

    The story of The Atlanta Child Murders is one full of false reporting, conspiracy, and pain. There were major racial, political, and economic factors in the city dubbed "Too busy to hate" that all played a role in the concentrated murders of black youth in primarily black Atlanta.

    Today we with sit down with Atlantis Filmworks a powerful team who have taken on the responsibility of connecting with the families and telling their stories. They are committed to those who are voiceless and are lending their expertise, time and talents to uplifting the missing voices. An aggregate of the many ignored voices is being combined into a fictional character (Cassandra) and magnified via a film production of the same name.

    This is an amazing episode that will get you a bit closer to the tragedies that haunted Atlanta and im sure still haunt the families.

    Welcome to episode one of four in our Black Future Month series.

    Black Future Month is all about honoring those that came before us by investing in those coming after us. How do we take the phrase I am my ancestors wildest dream and enrich it to the point that those who are next ultimately end up functioning at a level so much higher than our ancestor could dream.

    We start by sitting down with Kellye Britton of The Harvard Debate Council Diversity Project (HDCDP) an Atlanta-based pipeline program that recruits, trains, and sends black youth to a summer debate residency program at Harvard. (Thats the official wording but in reality it is so much more than that). Kellye has a passion for black youth and it is overly obvious as you listen.

    She discusses the HDCDP methodology, her personal passions for enrichment, and even dives into strategic thought on how parents can really help....she also makes it plain that we are not raising children we are raising adults.

    One tip she has and we support is simply - "Get out of their way"

    While Black sat down with Mr. Genarlow Wilson who several years ago was charged with kidnapping, rape, aggravated sodomy, and convicted of aggravated child molestation after a consensual sexual act occurred at a New Years Eve Party. He was a 17 year old high school student and she was a 15 year old classmate. Today Genarlow is out of prison, a graduate of Morehouse College in Atlanta GA, and giving back so that our children don’t end up following in his footsteps.

    There isn't much more we can say here other than jump in and and hear the details. Afterwards we recommend you sit down and have a conversation with your teen about intersexual respect, sexting, and teen relationships. Go have the difficult conversation before you end up dealing with something so much more difficult.

    How many times growing up did we see our uncle who was always drunk or our aunt who was known to have conversations with herself. How many times did you hear that someone was getting a crazy check and how often were you told just to be careful around that certain family member. Mental illness affects so many of us that it has become normalized. So much that we often don't recognize it and often dont get treatment.

    1 in 5 US adults suffer from mental illness and 1 in 16 suffer from major mental illness. Today we sit down with Dr Harrison Davis to dive into mental illness in the black community. We learn what mental illness can look like and how we can better take care of those around us who suffer from it. We also learn how to increase our chances of surviving a police interaction when in the middle of a mental health crisis.
