We're both privileged and delighted to be joined by Robin Pierson from the History of Byzantium podcast, which you of course know very well! He's a great history friend and we talk through some fascinating issues ranging from how the Byzantines did diplomacy, to who was just really bad at it. If you somehow don't know Robin, make sure you check him out by going to https://thehistoryofbyzantium.com/Remember also history friends, to make sure that you BEFIT! In this second part we apply what we've learned about Bismarck and his use of psychology and information about his enemies to the international situation in summer 1870, and discover how Bismarck, only through his own sheer force of will, managed to manipulate the entire French Empire into obeying the course he desired. It was of course despicable, but there was also something incredibly fantastic about the whole ordeal, and I believe he's earned himself a miniseries through acting, so let's make it happen and bring Patreon to $1,000 a month! Welcome history friends to an incredible two-parter, where we examine in more detail the psychology behind the idea that Bismarck managed to provoke his enemies, chief among them Napoleon III of France, into declaring war against him to touch off the Franco-Prussian War. It is essentially a deep dive which I've always wanted to investigate in more detail, and forms part of what I like to call WDF THINKS, special episodes launched just for this remastered party of ours. It also gives us all a foretaste of what's to come for Patrons, as once I reach the $1,000 goal on Patreon, a miniseries on Bismarck's life and career will be available to my lovely Patrons, which is of course just lovely news! Thankssss for listening and I hope you all enjoy it!Remember also history friends, to make sure that you BEFIT! Hello there, as if we couldn't drag out the Franco-Prussian War any further, here I am joined by everyone's favourite podcast machine Travis J Dow, purveyor and publisher of 349 million podcasts - probably, but you can find his stuff at http://www.podcastnik.com/Here we have a great conversation about all things Franco, some things Prussian and of course a whopper dosage of Bismarck. Let me know what you think, as there's plenty more to come! Thanksss again to Travis for taking part in the 5th birthday party - make sure to show him some love!

It's the ultimate question, and if I cannot answer it there's not much point in going any further. If you, like me, have ever been confronted with the idea that history, the study or pursuit of it, is somehow not worthwhile, then this episode is for you. It's my defence, my apology and my declaration in total favour of history, and it's a determined reminder that WDF is WHERE HISTORY THRIVES! So I hope you'll give it a listen and see for yourself that history is both immensely worthwhile and thoroughly rewarding. Thanksss!Remember also history friends, to make sure that you BEFIT! Part 2 of the war sees our focus take us into military matters, as well as the way in which the situation was manipulated by Bismarck so that the Iron Chancellor could get exactly what he wanted. Check it out!
