Here at WDF we've encountered the concept of national honour a great deal over the last five years. In many ways you could argue that I never shut up about it, and you'd be right, but I make no apologies. This serves as a round up of the concept, and an indication of where I hope to direct my PhD in history in the future if funding comes through. A reminder that the book I've written on the subject can be bought in signed copy format from me at http://www.wdfpodcast.com/shop/ and of course through AmazonRemember also history friends, to make sure that you BEFIT! My Agora besty Thom joins me to unwrap some more of the details about the nature of the Mex Us War. I hope you'll join us for the ride - Thom is an accomplished podcaster and great friend of the podcast to boot, which is probably the greatest combination a guy could ask for. He was also super nice and agreed to come on board with this insane project of ours, so he deserves props for that too. As our coverage concludes, we begin to understand just how depressing a loss it was for the Mexicans, and how dangerous the victory became for the Americans. Nobody could deny that the campaign had been a success for Washington, but some found it difficult to reconcile the triumph with American values and identity. Such problems were to spiral out of control in the years to come, but our coverage ends here! Thanksss for joining me!Remember also history friends, to make sure that you BEFIT! In this third and final part of the JDM collab, we spill the final beans on Napoleon Bonaparte and ask the final, most pressing questions of all. We are of course so proud to have J David Markham on the show, and it cannot be stated enough how grateful I am to him personally for helping us out here, and helping in the process to make history thrive, as well as make a certain history friend's pipe dream a reality. I had an absolute blast, and I would be remiss if I failed to mention J David Markham's initial foray into Napoleon for the final time too - remember check out:http://napoleonbonapartepodcast.com/So what's in this final box then? Well in this third and final part of the collab David and I examine the following issues: whether JDM thinks that Boney pushed Europe too far; whether Europe simply wasn't ready for someone like him or whether such issues can be explained by other means. We examine the candidates for who we think the best ally of Napoleon was, as well as the opposite end of the scale...

We return here with part 2 of the interview/collab/conversation, to unwrap Napoleon Bonaparte with J David Markham. David is one of the foremost authorities on Napoleon in his field, and first shot into my ears with his Napoleon 101 podcast, undertaken alongside the podcast god Cameron Reilly. Make sure you track him down by going to:http://napoleonbonapartepodcast.com/In this second part of our talk together we delve into a number of Napoleonic issues, including: the question of when JDM first become interested in the person of Napoleon, the fact that David takes issue with a number of misconceptions about Napoleon, and which in particular really bother him. We then change tack and ask whether there's much that can still be learned about Napoleon? What can we learn from him? Is there any room for further study on additional aspects of his life/personality/struggles etc.? What books on Napoleon can David recommend to us? What does he feel was Napoleon's best achievement or his worst mistake, and why...

That's right - the master of all things Napoleon Bonaparte and many other topics besides, J David Markham is here! We are absolutely indebted to David for coming on the show and talking to us - in a three part interview no less - about everything from his own career and experiences in the field of academia and scholarship, to the ins and outs of Napoleon the man, the legend, the enigma. It is, taken together, one of the greatest celebrations during Five Weeks To Run Wild, so I hope you'll give it a listen and let me know what you all thought. Remember to check out J David Markham and Cameron Reilly's podcast experience in Napoleon 101, where the idea for linking up with him first entered into my mind. It is still incredible to me that I managed to get him on the show - this guy was on the first conversational podcast I ever listened to, and on the second actual podcast to boot - but here he is! There's nobody I'd rather have more on WDF than a certain J David Markham, so I hope you'll listen to this part...

In our final episode, with the French pushed out of Russia and hurrying home to prevent another coup, it seemed as though all of Napoleon's pigeons had come home to roost. Could this mean the end of this endless struggle, and had the world's most enduring conflict finally showed signs of ending? Not until Napoleon rid himself of all ambition the allies said, for it was time for the legend to end.Remember also history friends, to make sure that you BEFIT! Welcome back to our penultimate episode on the war, as the enemies begin to rearm themselves for another go at it, Napoleon begins to eye up Russia, and the continental system takes a turn. Under these circumstances Britain could excel, and she would muster all her resources once again in this marathon against her eternal enemy. With his enemies in bits, Napoleon could be forgiven for thinking that nobody stood between him and endless glory, yet even as the honours were lining up, cracks were beginning to appear in the facade, cracks which in time shatter the glass that he had so brilliantly help to make shine. Basically, the Spanish ulcer started to open, and we look into in detail here. Thanksss!Remember also history friends, to make sure that you BEFIT!
