Oakland Ladder Truck Crash Video response from a veteran traffic cop Mar 16, 2022
    Show notes

    Ripped from the headlines!

Recently, three Oakland, California, firefighters were injured after their ladder truck crashed into a building after swerving to miss a vehicle in an intersection. As per usual, the keyboard commanders hit the socials to point blame here, there and anywhere, adding their expert observations about vehicle size, speed, location, rules being followed and every other imaginable observation.

So Justin did what any knuckle dragging fireman would do...he called up his cop buddy and showed him the video.

This week you get a special treat of not only hearing Motorcop, a veteran traffic officer and collision investigation expert's initial response to watching the video, but we then take a pause and watch as he conducts a mini investigation into what he sees and assigns who is at fault, most likely, for this incident.

As far as two knuckleheads with a podcast and plenty of time to think about it have authority to do so. However, MC's insights into vehicle location, road markings and signal changes add an entirely new layer to the discussion.

Here's the video in question from KTVU News.

Pull it up and follow along as MC works his magic.

    WWJD - What's With Justin's Disability? Mar 09, 2022
    Show notes

As you may recall, one of your co-hosts (the less prettier but way taller one (also younger)) suffered a stress induced migraine storm that took him out of normal rotation for a full three months.

During this time of recovery, therapy and a fair amount of medication Justin awaited word from work about the status of his claim that it was, as all the Doctors and therapists concluded, work related.

Well, that final decision finally came through recently and that's our core topic of discussion this week!

    This week we ponder:

    • Exactly what makes something work related in first responder land
    • When retiring what can you take with you and how can that differ from Dept to Dept
    • Would Justin take a check to walk away from his career of 26 1/2 years
    • If you've read this far you get a treat: Yes, he would.

We got Trouble. Right here in River City. How can we avoid it? Mar 02, 2022
    Show notes

There are those who say that the Mel Brooks comedy classic Blazing Saddles could never be made today because of the softness of culture; because of the bleeding hearts and their easily offended attitudes; because these kids all got trophies.

Well, who bought those trophies? Who raised these softies anyway?

That's a topic for another podcast because this week your brave hosts bring back Lumpy, the mysterious retired cop, in studio to talk about what's going to land you in hot water in EMS, Police and Fire.

And of course in true WYE style the topic goes from what COULD get you in trouble to what would absolutely get your hosts hauled in front of the brass today. Or would it?

    This week we ponder:

    • Where the line between shenanigans and hazing is
    • Why cops and firefighters seem to always disrobe to ride bicycles
    • What Jason's story about the goose really says about his love of bass guitar
    • A few tidbits that could keep you from...ahem...stepping in it in your early days on the job

Author Jason Brick and how to avoid a fight Feb 23, 2022
    Show notes

WARNING - This episode contains explicit language. Listener discretion is advised.

Jason Brick is a gamer, writer, martial arts expert and all around great guy. He has also known Justin since college.

This week, Jason is back on WYE Radio to share news about a new collection of stories from people who could very easily ruin your day with their fighting skills...but don't. Stories of bouncers, law enforcement, body guards and many other walks of life are coming together for a kickstarter project titled There I Was, and Nothing Happened.

Wit the focus on de-escalation in law enforcement this collection serves as a reminder that there are many solutions to be had other than throwing a punch, kick, elbow or star. Get it? Martial arts? Throwing star?

Have a listen and then go check out his Kickstarter campaign which goes live TODAY!

    This week we learn:

    • How to diffuse a bar crowded with Hells Angels and a College Rugby Team hosting a wake
    • What the central theme of the stories Jason has collected teaches us
    • Who is Jason #1 and Jason #2
    • Why is Jason #2 obsessed with a Murder Robot?

Laurie White – Hope and Resilience after losing a leg on the job Feb 16, 2022
    Show notes

"I heard a loud pop, like a giant balloon and I saw a giant black hole in the door I was standing next to. I looked down, and as I did I smelled the familiar smell of gun powder. I thought to myself 'did I just get shot?' and I told my partner and he told me to lay down so I did. Then he grabbed me by my vest and pulled me around the corner."

That's the short version of the story from today's guest Laurie White, retired RCMP.

With only 2 years on the job Laurie was shot by a suspect while serving a warrant. After being flown from rural Kitimat BC to Vancouver she awoke to an amputated leg and news that the man who shot her later killed himself after a standoff.

Laurie shares her story in a new book: 10-33 An Officer Down Steps Back Up

    This week Laurie shares:

    • The feelings when you have to put on a smile for all the press after an on duty injury
    • How depression impacted her after having to move away from home
    • Why her story had to wait so long to be told
    • How hard Justin worked not to tell a single foot pun the entire show

Changes in the Land of First Responders over a Quarter Century Feb 09, 2022
    Show notes

In the movie version of this week's show, your experts look like Statler and Waldorf from the Muppets, taking off their glasses and taking a deep breath before starting a long, boring story that starts with "You know, back in my day..."

Or it could be reminiscing first hearing Davie Bowie sing "Changes" while sitting in a corner.

Along with their in studio guest, the elusive retired LEO we'll call "Lumpy," your hosts embark on a look back over the last quarter century of policing, EMS and fire fighting to answer the question: "What's changed the most?"

    This week you'll hear:

    • Stories from long ago and far away at the retired guy breakfast can be educational
    • Lumpy isn't a fan of supervisors
    • Jason talks about radio improvements for motor officers
    • Justin waxes nostalgic about the Thomas Guide

PTSD, A Canadian Mountie, and a Podcast Feb 02, 2022
    Show notes

We know what you're thinking while looking at the title of this episode of the world's first, best any only Fire, EMS, Police podcast: Someone has been reading your Christmas list. Did we really get an actual Dudley Doright on the show? We did. Because we know what our audience is looking for and deliver 100% of the time. And no, we're not referring to the Brandon Fraser live action remake. Who would be?

This week on the show we have a new Podcaster and former LEO from America's Hat, Canada, to talk about a very serious subject, mental health. Hence all the shenanigans in the first paragraph.

Nathan Kapler is not only a survivor of addiction and PTSD but is fighting to share his story to help others. You know we love that kind of thing so here he is on the show.

    This week you'll learn:

    • How Nathan's journey started and where it has led him
    • That not being OK is OK and that isn't just a tag line
    • Why pushing emotions deeper is the only thing to do, and also the wrong thing to do
    • If Canadian Mounties are issued those red coats and a moose upon graduation from "the Depot"

Introducing MC's New Podcast Project Jan 26, 2022
    Show notes

On the heels of (finally!) announcing his retirement, MC wants to give you a sneak peak at his latest podcast project: Badges and Budgets.

The first episode is a doozy, too. MC comes out swinging and makes the claim that "most cops aren't great with money." Interesting tactic of a marketing genius? Copy-writing savant? Bear-poking?

Perhaps all of the above. But, we here at WYE ask you to give it a listen and keep an open mind. It's MC's post-LEO mission to change the way most first responders handle their money.

The majority of first responders are living paycheck-to-paycheck. They don't know where their money is going, and they're making impulsive spending decisions without a plan. The Badges and Budgets podcast will help you create a personalized spending plan, reduce your financial stress, prepare for retirement, and stop worrying about how you'll make ends meet.

Some of the upcoming topics of Badges and Budgets include:

    • Why we're so reticent to discuss our finances/financial experiences
    • How our relationship with money impacts how we utilize it
    • Ways to change our approach to our finances and improve our lives...both personally and professionally

Stump MC - Trivia from a crazy week in first responder land Jan 19, 2022
    Show notes

This week Justin pulls three stories from the feeds and sees if MC can guess what's going on. Have a listen to see if you too can guess right, then see the links below for the stories:

Story 1: What was so special about the recent launch of the USS Abraham Lincoln and her carrier group?

Story 2: How did this man in custody catch on fire?

Story 3: Investigators of a fatal fire in Philly that left 12 dead, including 7 children, learned it was started how?
