    This book is about having courage and being vulnerable. It is inspired by the below quote from a Theodore Rooseveldt speech, known as 'The Man in The Arena'. Our interpretation: don't be a little bitch, get out there and have a crack.

    It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood; who strives valiantly; who errs, who comes short again and again, because there is no effort without error and shortcoming; but who does actually strive to do the deeds; who knows great enthusiasms, the great devotions; who spends himself in a worthy cause; who at the best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement, and who at the worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly, so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who neither know victory nor defeat.

    We shared a few red wines, a kebab and a night at the ballet with Dan and talked about things like procrastination, hedonic adaptation, using relativity as a short cut for comparisons, how he got into behavioural economics, and so much more. Check it out!

    'The hidden forces that shape our decisions'

    Economists start with the assumption that all humans are fully informed, rational decision makers. They use this to form all of their economic theories and models. But, as Dan Ariely points out, we're NOT rational. In many cases, we're very IRRATIONAL: we make decisions that aren't in our own best interest. More than that, Dan recognised that we are irrational in very PREDICTABLE ways - we all make the same kinds of mistakes. He shows how we are influenced by things like comparisons, arousal, price, ownership and our own expectations. This is an absolutely phenomenal book with wide-ranging applications.

    Joel Bakan is the author of the books 'The Corporation' and 'Childhood Under Siege'.

    The Corporation (the last book we read and reviewed) talks about how the structure of large companies essentially forces them to focus purely on profit and disregard any other obligations or responsibilities they may have to those around them. It was also a documentation (of the same title) and Joel is currently working on 'The Corporation 2' to be released in late-2018.

    Childhood Under Siege talks about how big businesses target children and control their actions through marketing and advertising, as children haven't fully developed more rational, long-term thinking and planning yet.

    'The Pathological Pursuit of Power and Profit'

    This is another eye-opening book, where the author contends that the structure of companies forces them to be 'psychopaths' by definition: they have no regard for others, they externalise as many costs as they can, the take no responsibility, the feel no guilt or remorse, they lack empathy, the have asocial tendencies, they only relate to others superficially, and they manipulate everyone around them.
