Terrifying & True | Chain Letters: Curses, Pyramid Schemes & Viral Fear Oct 10, 2022
    Show notes

Chain letters turn a simple instruction—pass this on—into a promise of fortune or a threat of disaster. Terrifying & True follows copied religious warnings, Lucy Meyer’s 1888 fundraising appeal and the money-making schemes that flooded mailboxes long before email spam. Dime letters and the Circle of Gold show how generosity, greed and superstition can keep a message moving. Today the same pressure travels through social feeds and forwarded posts. Why do people who doubt a curse still hesitate to break the chain, and who profits from that hesitation? We're telling that story tonight.

New to Yatesville, Isaiah Crane accepts a costume-party invitation from the girl he likes, even though his classmates want him dressed as a local man executed for witchcraft. Running late, he takes his bicycle into the woods and discovers that resembling a dead man can attract the wrong kind of attention. Folk horror meets the anxiety of trying to fit in as Isaiah searches for a way back to the party. Some town legends become much harder to dismiss after dark.

Terrifying & True | Corpsewood Manor Murders (1982): Charles Scudder and Joseph Odom Oct 03, 2022
    Show notes

The 1982 Corpsewood Manor murders destroyed the secluded Georgia home Charles Scudder and Joseph Odom had built together. Terrifying & True follows the couple’s move from Chicago, their hospitality and the rumors of wealth that drew Kenneth Brock and Tony West to their door. The robbery, killings and trials became tangled with homophobia, occult imagery and the era’s Satanic Panic. Later ghost stories surround the ruins, but the documented crime begins with human choices. How did a dream of privacy become a target for violence and prejudice? We're telling that story tonight.

Ophiuchus | A Mysterious 1982 Arcade Game Demands More Than Quarters Sep 14, 2022
    Show notes

A strange arcade cabinet waits inside a gas station in “Ophiuchus” by Dan Wilder. It’s 1982, and twelve-year-old Darcy Reed is looking for a game worth her quarters at Rocco’s Gas and Go. The unfamiliar machine offers something she has never played before, but its alien imagery and unsettling demands suggest the stakes extend beyond a high score. Retro gaming nostalgia gives way to science-fiction horror as Darcy learns that the controls do more than move a character on a screen. What happens when the game starts making its own moves—and expects her to keep playing?

Terrifying & True | Sylvia Likens: The 1965 Murder and Ivan Rogers’s Memorial Sep 12, 2022
    Show notes

Sylvia Likens was sixteen when she was murdered in Indianapolis in 1965. This Terrifying & True account by John Oak Dalton examines Gertrude Baniszewski’s household, the abuse others witnessed and the trial that followed. It also traces a less familiar connection: filmmaker Ivan Rogers, a child in the city at the time, later worked to preserve Sylvia’s memory through a public memorial. The episode contains graphic accounts of child abuse and torture. How did a neighborhood fail Sylvia—and how did one man choose to remember her? We're telling that story tonight.
