Collaborating with Menopause and Feeling at the Top of Your Game with National Menopause Foundation Founder, Claire Gill Apr 26, 2021
    Show notes

Send me a Text Message about the show!

When Claire Gill realized there was a foundation set up to 'Save the Bats' but nothing out there to address the needs of menopausal women, she decided it was completely unacceptable, and maybe, there was room for both! Unwilling to go down the menopause rabbit hole quietly, Claire is on a mission to lift the shame and taboo that come with growing older as a woman in this age obsessed society. As she looked for peer to peer support, she realized the only organizations really set up to address menopause were geared toward clinicians (mostly men, who were not experiencing menopause anyway!) so she has turned it on it's head.
This is a fired up conversation about what women need and want as they move into the second half of their life. The need for resources and support that have been addressed by Claire and her team, and are now available because of the National Menopause Foundation is an invaluable contribution that must be acknowledged. More than anything, this is just a feel good message about all the possibilities that are available to women as they grow fabulously older- thanks to women who are determined to make it the best time of their lives, and yours!
    Meet Claire!
After a 20+ year career in public relations and marketing for national nonprofits and
public relations firms with Fortune 500 clients, Claire Gill founded the National
Menopause Foundation in September 2019. While serving as Chief Mission Officer for a
health-based nonprofit, Ms. Gill realized there was no national nonprofit dedicated
solely to women’s journey to and through menopause, so she set out to create one. The
National Menopause Foundation’s mission is create a positive change in how people
perceive, understand and experience menopause through education, peer-to-peer
    support, activism, and research.
Through its website, The Positive Pause podcast, The Hot Flash electronic newsletter,
and its online community, called The Menopause Metamorphosis, the National
Menopause Foundation seeks to bring about a world where women thrive at every
stage of their lives and have access to the information and networks that ensure
menopause is a positive, inspiring and empowering time in every woman’s life.
Ms. Gill also serves as the Chief Executive Officer of the National Osteoporosis
Foundation, which has a strategic alliance with the National Menopause Foundation.
Ms. Gill is a graduate of Syracuse University’s Newhouse School. She is a member of Les
Dames d’Escoffier International (LDEI), a philanthropic organization supporting women
in the food, beverage and hospitality industries. She and her family reside in Lorton, VA.

We Stand With Nikki: A Conversation on Criminalizing Survivors with the Nicole Addimando Community Defense Committee Apr 18, 2021
    Show notes

Send me a Text Message about the show!

In this episode, Jess and Jess sit down for a very honest and difficult conversation with Rebecca McWilliams and Wendy Freedman, both avid supporters and advocates as well as members of the Nicole Addimando Community Defense Committee. Together, they introduce Nikki Addimando, a mother of two, teacher, respected community member, and domestic violence survivor. In 2017, Nikki was forced to protect herself and her children's lives, by killing her abuser, Chris Grover. In February 2020, Nikki was sentenced to 19 years to life for the killing of her abuser, and the Community Defense Committee believes Nikki is a victim of the criminal justice system, and will not accept this result of Nikki protecting her own life, as well as that of her children's.
It's not shocking that 67% of women sent to prison in 2005 for killing someone close to them were abused by the victim of their crime (NYS Department of Corrections and Community Supervision). Rebecca and Wendy share their expertise and advocacy work around not just Nikki's case, but also for every woman who is being held hostage by their abuser, and sees the only way out is to defend themselves in whatever manner possible. By raising awareness about Nikki and the horrific abuse she survived, the Committee aims to keep other victims of domestic violence from being criminalized by the courts, but more than that, they work tirelessly to continue advocating on behalf of Nikki, so that she may be justly returned home to live in safety with her two children.
On April 22, 2021, Nicole Addimando will stand before a judge for her appeal hearing and the hope and prayer is that Nikki's sentence will be overturned. We Stand With Nikki and other criminalized survivors, that justice indeed will be served, and Nikki will no longer be criminalized for her right to survive, and that she will be rightfully returned to the arms of her two children, so that she may take her place as a pillar of strength and resilience in her community, once again.
For more information about We Stand With Nikki and the Nicole Addimando Community Defense Committee, as well as a complete resource list for organizations and articles about Nikki and the issue around criminalizing survivors, go to: https://westandwithnikki.com/
*** For more in depth information on Nikkis case and the overall issue of criminalized survival keep an eye out for Justine Vanderluen's upcoming podcast "Believe Her" presented by Lemonada in association with Speigel and Grau, set to be released Fall of 2021.
    Meet Wendy:
Wendy Freedman is a clinical psychologist and the director of the Vassar College Counseling Service. Deep affection and love for her family, friends and community has led to a passion for social justice, and a commitment to partner with fellow allies to try to contribute to positive change. Wendy has been honored to be a member of the Nicole Addimando Community Defense Committee for over 3 years and is privileged to work with an incredible group of advocates to fight for Nikki and all criminalized survivors.

    Meet Rebecca:
Rebecca McWilliams is the Executive Director of Girls on the Run Birmingham in Birmingham Alabama. She is a native of Baltimore, MD and received her BA in Public Communications from American University. She is passionate about empowering women and girls, and through her work advocating for Nikki Addimando, has become increasingly aware of our troubled criminal justice and prison systems and the deep inequities that exist within those systems. She is a proud member of the Nicole Addimando Community Defense Committee.

Would I Lie To You? The Power of Honesty in a World That Lies, with Author Judi Ketteler Mar 29, 2021
    Show notes

Send me a Text Message about the show!

Oh, it's just a little white lie. No harm, no foul....right?
In this episode, The Two Jess(es) sit down for a fascinating (and inconclusive) conversation with author of Would I Lie To You?, Judi Ketteler. With authentic curiosity, and in the spirit of self-exploration, Judi makes a case, through her writing, and this conversation, for setting intention to check in with those little white lies.
What motivates us to not tell the entire truth? Is it for the sake of the other person's feelings or safety? Or is it for ours? Is it because we don't want to expend the mental energy it might take to address the truths that we swat at like little fruit flies, demanding us to face...the truth about ourselves or others?
Jess B confesses she lies. A lot. Especially on her Noom app. Jess K (as always) poses some really great questions about how we might move from dishonesty to total honesty with the person that matters the most: ourselves.
Lots of great thought provoking takeaways on this episode!
    Meet Judi!
Judi Ketteler has been writing stories since she was old enough to hold a pencil. She got her professional start working as a copywriter for a small agency, but has been a full-time freelance writer since 2002. An award-winning essayist, she has contributed to dozens of publications, including The New York Times, The Washington Post, Los Angeles Magazine, TIME, Scientific American, Good Housekeeping, Runner’s World, and others. She is also the author of two books about sewing. Judi has a B.A. in English from Northern Kentucky University, and an M.A. in English from Miami University of Ohio. She lives in Cincinnati with her husband and two children, where she enjoys running, yoga, and doing flips on the trampoline.

We Should Talk About...Shopping with "Gee Thanks, Just Bought It!" Podcast Host, Caroline Moss Mar 22, 2021
    Show notes

Send me a Text Message about the show!

This week's episode is a little different from the usual, but it is oh, so , fun! The Two Jess(es) sit down for an entertaining conversation about shopping and all the products you didn't know you needed (and most of them under $20!) with "Gee Thanks, Just Bought It!" podcast host, Caroline Moss.
Caroline shares her inspiration for starting a podcast that serves to simplify the shopping experience by inviting guests on to share a product that they actually love and would recommend. No "Goop" priced products on this podcast- think shopping guides for all the things you didn't know you needed, under 20 bucks!
In addition to simplifying the shopping experience for consumers who are going to shop anyway, Caroline has become quite the benefactor of $2 contributions to various mutual aid organizations throughout the United States. To date, "Geezers" have donated over $80,000 since July, to those who are most in need.
If you are into hot tubs, CBD bath bombs and kids books- you will really enjoy this episode!
    Meet Caroline!
Author (and shopping expert) Caroline Moss knows where to find all the life-changing under-the-radar products you didn’t think you needed — like hand warmers that double as phone chargers, foot hammocks, and full-face ice masks. If she doesn’t, she knows who to call.

Each Friday she and a savvy guest give you the real deal on their favorite recent purchases and reveal where you can find them too. Every Thursday, Geezers chip in $2 toward a big pot that goes to a different non-profit or mutual aid fund. So far they’ve donated $50,000. Because shopping for yourself isn’t that much fun if you’re not helping others along the way.

Caroline has written five books (HEY LADIES!, and the “Work It, Girl!” kids books), and is a freelance producer and writer. She lived in Brooklyn for ten years before moving to Los Angeles with her husband and cats Kevin and Steve.

To find out more, visit: https://www.geethanksjustboughtit.com/gtjbi and you can find Caroline's show, "Gee Thanks, Just Bought It" wherever you listen to podcasts.

Serving the Underserved through Court Appointed Special Advocates with Darcy Hubbard Mar 11, 2021

As of 2018, there were approximately 437,283 children in foster care, nationwide. That is a lot of children who may not have someone to advocate on their behalf in court.
Our fourth, and final interview highlighting extraordinary women who are making the world a better place, this is grass roots work at it's most fundamental practice.
Court Appointed Special Advocates originated in Seattle, Washington where, in 1977, a Superior Court Judge, David Soukup, developed a pilot program for volunteer advocates, named Court Appointed Special Advocates, or CASA volunteers, who would be trained to serve as the “eyes and ears” of the judge into the environments and circumstances of abused and neglected children and to serve as the voice for each child in Court.
In this episode, The Two Jess(es) sit down for a REAL conversation with Fairfax County, Virginia CASA Executive Director, Darcy Hubbard about the life changing work a committed volunteer can make in a child's life who has been passed through the system.
An informative episode about the possibilities of impacting at risk youth through the practice of advocacy and collaboration.
