Send me a Text Message about the show!

Jess and Jess love to talk about grief. So this week's conversation with licensed grief therapist, Edy Nathan, around her bestselling book, "It's Grief," where she examines the emotional and devastating impact of loss and trauma.
Grief is hard to talk about- but in this conversation, grief is framed within the context of the Hero/Shero's journey- a state of true transformation. She says there is nothing normal about-never has been, never will be- but that it can become an ally as we find a new normal in that space in our lives that is ready to be changed.
    Meet Dr. Edie:
Edy Nathan MA, LCSWR is an author, public speaker and licensed
therapist. She is an AASECT certified sex therapist, hypnotherapist and
certified EMDR practitioner with more than 20 years of experience. Edy earned degrees from New York University and Fordham University, with post-graduate training at the Ackerman Institute for Family Therapy. She practices in New York City. In her expertise as a grief therapist she interweaves her formal training as a psychotherapist with breathwork, guided imagery, ritual and storytelling. Trauma, abuse, and grief cause the soul to become imbalanced: The goal of the work is to find emotional calibration or balance to defy the depth of darkness and the grip grief often has on the psyche.

Not Done Yet: A Conversation on Gendered Ageism with Bestselling Author, Podcast Host and Executive Coach, Bonnie Marcus Aug 01, 2022
    Show notes

Send me a Text Message about the show!

What does it mean to be "too old?" Bonnie Marcus has researched this question considerably and maintains that we, as women, hold ourselves back with self-sabotaging beliefs that we are too old to be taken seriously, or move to the next professional step.
Bonnie has made it her mission to support women of all ages, but especially those who are 50+ as they continue to grow in their professional goals, and fight the gendered ageism that continues to show up time and again in the workplace.
Jess and Jess have a lot of questions for Bonnie about how to battle gendered ageism in their own minds as they continue to grow this podcast and their respective businesses- and in their professional networks.
Only 9% of public companies address ageism as something that exists in their workplace, let alone, the intersectionality of gendered ageism. Bonnie explains why things MUST change- because our lifespans are NOT linear. We change careers over and over at any part of our lives, and the workplace MUST evolve accordingly.
    Meet Bonnie!
Award winning entrepreneur, Forbes contributing writer, speaker, and executive coach, Bonnie Marcus, M.Ed., assists professional women to successfully navigate the workplace and position and promote themselves to advance their careers. She is a leading expert in gendered ageism in the workplace. Her latest book, Not Done Yet! How Women Over 50 Regain Their Confidence and Claim Their Workplace Power, shines a light on
this issue and gives women the tools and the voice to defy ageist assumptions to stay marketable and keep their job.
With 20+ years of sales and management experience, Bonnie’s extensive business background includes CEO of a ServiceMaster company and VP of Sales at Medical Staffing Network and two others national companies in the healthcare and software industries. She has held executive positions in startup companies
    and Fortune 500 companies.
Bonnie started her corporate career at an entry-level position and worked her way up to the top of a national
company. Her passion is now to help other women embrace their talent and ambition and step into their full potential and workplace power. Bonnie shares her message globally through speaking engagements, live and virtual workshops, blogging, and her popular podcast, Badass Women at Any Age. Bonnie’s first book, The Politics of Promotion: How High Achieving Women Get Ahead and Stay Ahead, provides a roadmap for women to navigate the complexities of the workplace and position themselves for success. A certified coach, Bonnie has been honored by Global Gurus as one of the world’s top 30 coaches in 2015-2022. She has been acknowledged as one of the top 100 keynote speakers in 2018 by Databird
    Research Journal.
Bonnie received a BA from Connecticut College and a M.Ed. from New York University.

    Show notes

Send me a Text Message about the show!

It is undisputed that COVID-19 has wreaked havoc on all of us, worldwide. Job juggling, The Great Resignation, social justice, Black Lives Matter, our health, and overall peace of mind- but more than anything, our CHILDREN- what about the children? Not one of us has escaped this mess unscathed.
In her new book, The Stolen Year (due out August 23, 2022) National Public Radio reporter, Anya Kamenetz shares with Jess and Jess her research around the American education system as "the biggest, most reliable social welfare institution for 50 million children" and how it failed our children during the pandemic. Kids don't stop developing, even though the world stopped for a time. And now, we have some things to sort out.
Anya follows five families across the US as they endure the first year of the pandemic. Her findings and reflections make for interestingly jolting conversation, and the book is a must read as we head back into the school year, still dealing with the past, present and future of COVID.
    Meet Anya:
Anya Kamenetz is an education correspondent for NPR. Previously she worked as a staff writer for Fast Company magazine. She's contributed to the New York Times, Washington Post, New York Magazine, Slate, and O, the Oprah Magazine, and has won multiple awards for her reporting on education, technology, and innovation. The Siren House: Women Building Intentional Community through Co-Housing and Questioning Societal Norms Jun 27, 2022
    Show notes

Send me a Text Message about the show!

Herrin Hopper and Holly Harper met in 2015 when their kids were in the same preschool program on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. Through normal socializing with other parents, somehow six moms - all married and all living in the same 10-block radius - became friends. Sometime in 2016, Holly disclosed to Herrin that her marriage was in BIG trouble. Infidelity. Anxiety. Depression. At the same time, Herrin was working through her own marriage troubles, but from a different perspective and approach. They began to grow closer together as they navigated this time, offering one another advice and just friendship. When Holly's marriage finally ended in 2018 - Herrin was there for her through the worst of it. Six months later, she and her husband decided to separate as well. By the fall of 2019, both were living in fancy schmancy high-rise apartments on H Street NE in the Capitol Hill neighborhood, trying to get used to the "new normal." By early 2020, both were starting to consider their next home buying journey. Over a game of Bogle, they decided to look for a duplex. Less than 10 days later, they had a realtor and went out property hunting. They saw four properties that first day, and the fourth one was "The Siren House." They closed in June 2020 and have been continuing to build community since they moved in.
In this episode Jess and Jess talk with the Siren House owners about what it means to build intentional community, the opportunity to become homeowners, and support other women in that journey, and what it means to parent each others children, setting boundaries, sharing the housing load and living in a mindset of service.
