340: An Incredible Tale from the Road with Ziona Riley Mar 27, 2023
    Show notes

As you can tell from the title of this episode, we’ve got a special one! I am joined this episode by Ziona Riley; a musician that has captured my attention for some years now. I don’t recall how I heard it originally but the track “Bury This Heirloom” (off of her 2019 release, Not Too Precious) came into my life and it’s just an absolutely devastating piece of work. I mean that in a great way. Riley’s voice is unique and powerful, even when her music is sparse and delicate. And if that weren’t alluring enough, she’s also the bass player for the band Heinous Orca; a rawkous undertaking that feels like it lives on the opposite end of the spectrum from her personal work.

It’s that diversity that really drew me in. So, I invited her to put together a playlist of local artists that she enjoys and we just have a chat. She shares some great stories from her time touring, how she found her people in Nashville and and does a great job shouting out a load of artists in town you might not know. I’m biased but it’s really a delightful time.

And on top of ALL OF THAT, she also shared 2 brand new recordings that have yet to be heard by anyone! So, we get to have a fantastic chat with a local artist, get their insight on other local musicians AND play some new exclusive music from them.

Be sure to follow Ziona Riley, Nick Woods, HR Lexy, The Chewers, Crave On, Josephine Foster, Lou Turner, The Cherry Blossoms, Ritzy D, Jim Hoke, Austin Hoke and Heinous Orca for more updates.

    Show notes

If you’re a regular listener of the show you might be wondering – where the heck have we been?! It’s been over a month since our last episode and, frankly, that’s pretty unusual for this show. The reason for the absensce is pretty simple – my day job is working in tech and like a lot of the industry, the company I work for had a large number of layoffs earlier in the year. While my job specifically was not impacted, the people I work with were impacted and it’s caused a downstream effect on my availability. In other words, a bunch of folks I work with got fired and the amount of free time I have has dwindled to nothing. It’s not an EXCITING story to tell but it’s the truth.

But let’s not get mired down in the past. It’s unfortunate I haven’t been able to post a new episode in some time but we’re here now. Let’s hear some new music! This episode of the show is 15 tracks and really gets us back into the swing of things.

Be sure to follow SONATORE, Kristen Ford, Dialup Ghost, Anna Orchid, Corduroy Clemens, The Dozier HimSelf, Brian Brown, Bully and Soccer Mommy, mt vice, Dan Burns, Janell Rosa, scott w brooks and Nashville Ambient Ensemble for more updates.

Flying into this episode without a lick of a script. Generally I take notes or even go so far as to write down everything I want to say but not this time. Fortunately, these fifteen locals tracks are all so excellent, it’s not the least bit difficult to have something great to say about them. As usual, you’ll find something within that you like – the W.O.T.T. Promise.

    337: Track-by-Track: The Features, The Mahaffey Sessions 1999 Feb 02, 2023
    Show notes The Features

For anyone that isn’t familiar; The Features were a highly revered rock band from the mid 90’s through 2017. They released a number of albums, explored a ton of different styles and always put on a helluva live show. You’d be hard pressed to find anyone that didn’t enjoy The Features on some level. Way back in 1999, the band was experiencing some changes. They’d released an EP with their indie label, Spongebath Records, and even recorded a full-length album with producer Richard Dortch; which had some songs released as a 10″ and on some samplers. A few band members left and a new band member joined, drummer Rollum Haas.

The band went BACK into the studio with producer Matt Mahaffey – also a labelmate of theirs on Spongebath with the band Self – to record another full-length album. That album was also never officially released… until January of 2023 in the form of this new album, The Mahaffey Sessions 1999; about 24 years after its inception.

For transparency, the album was released by my indie label – yk Records – so my interest in sharing this interview on this podcast is a bit biased. I want to promote the record and this is an excellent forum to do so. However, I actually worked at Spongebath Records back in 1999 and got my hands on a CDR of the album way back when. I’ve been listening to this record for over two decades, very regularly. It’s the impetus for me approaching the band in the first place to release it; I love this album and always thought it was beyond unfortunate that it was never released. All that is to say, even if yk Records hadn’t put this out, I’d still be talking to the Features in this forum because it’s a fantastic record.

I gotta give a huge thanks here at the top for the time the band spent with me. It’s not easy to remember details of something that happened a lifetime ago but they provide such fantastic insight. I am forever grateful to them for letting me release but, moreso, just MAKING IT in the first place. So, thank you The Features and here we go with our track-by-track discussion of The Mahaffey Sessions 1999 …

The Mahaffey Sessions 1999 is available on Bandcamp and streaming services.

    Show notes 336: Molly Martin

To be totally honest, 2023 has been kicking my ass so far. I won’t bore you with the details but plenty of other things have been requiring my attention for most of the month and this show fell by the wayside. Don’t you worry tho, it bugged me every single day that there wasn’t a new WOTT Music episode until now!

So much great new music already released. This episode we’ve got 16 new tracks queued up for you and a backlog that is already growing at a healthy rate. Making new episodes will be no problem if we keep up this pace.

    335: The Eight Hour 2022 Celebration Dec 29, 2022
    Show notes

TLDR: We put together 8 hours of great music from 2022 and decided to simply share it all. Enjoy!

This episode of the show we may have gone off the deep end a little bit. You see, in years past we’ve put together a playlist of some of our favorite songs of the year and then let the ole iTunes select 15 to 20 tracks as a representation of the year. There was always a massive playlist to pick from but it seemed like playing every song was just too daunting of a task.

…But this year, we decided – why not share the whole thing? There are a lot of options of media to partake in and listening to an eight hour long music podcast is probably not going to rank at the top of your list but that’s not really the point. This show is meant to serve as documentation of the Nashville music scene during a period of time. What better way to capture that than by playing an insanely long, incredibly diverse, immensely satisfying playlist?

As a bit of a caveat, we’re not a fan of BEST OF lists. There’s literally no way to say what artist or song was better than any other artist or song. Aside from the weird competitive nature of such a mindset, there’s literally just no way to *hear* everything that came out in a year. This playlist is fantastic but it’s incomplete. This isn’t holistic in terms of genres. Nor is it holistic in terms of what may have been the quote unquote BEST track from a given artist or release. It’s a massive, SUBJECTIVE, selection of songs. It does a damn good job of capturing 2022 but it isn’t everything. Despite that, let this be a jumping off point for you to learn more and find even more music from these artists if you enjoy them.

333: Cleaning the Metaphorical Closet Dec 14, 2022
    Show notes

This week on the show we’ve got a bigger-than-usual playlist. I went back through my archives, scrubbed new releases on Bandcamp, cleaned out my DM’s and tried to pull together as much new music as I could find to clean out the metaphorical closet. We’re really nearing the end of the year here and I suspect this will be the last episode of quote-unquote new releases. I’ve got a Christmas episode in the works and maybe a year end wrap up episode… some things to look forward. But this episode, we’ve got a ton of great new music. I’ll keep the talking to a minimum and let you enjoy. Be sure to click through in the episode notes for more music from everyone.

We end the show with a chat about a little mystery surrounding the artist flwr grl. I may be 100% wrong on this folks but it’s an amusing thought exercise.

Be sure to follow memethegoat, TSU Aristocrat of Bands, LUNAR, Robbie Lynn Hunsinger, Harper Mayo, Country Westerns, Public Occurrences, Alicia Blue, Milo Jo, OTTO, Eyebrow Dog, and flwr grl for more updates.
