S12 Ep621: Clash of the Titans (2010) Jul 12, 2022

Show notes

On this episode, the 2022 Summer Blockbuster Extravaganza puts on its sandals and raises its sword to the sky as we chat about 2010's Clash of the Titans!

Why is it that every monster in this movie had to be as big as a house, meanwhile most of Harryhausen's 1981 monsters are much smaller and way more terrifying? Why did we have to make this an edge lord revenge film instead of a fantasy/romance adventure? And did Ralph Fiennes really think he could play Hades just like he played Voldemort and no one would notice? PLUS: Much talk about Desmond Davis's totally kick-ass, original film from 1981!

Be sure to catch our VIRTUAL LIVE SHOW where we're talking about Ghostbusters: Afterlife and doing a night-of virtual Q&A, on Friday, July 29th! Click here for tickets.

Clash of the Titans stars Sam Worthington, Liam Neeson, Ralph Fiennes, Jason Flemyng, Gemma Arterton, Alexa Davalos, Mads Mikkelsen, Luke Evans, Liam Cunningham, and Nicholas Hoult; directed by Louis Leterrier.

Show notes

On this super-powered episode of the Summer Blockbuster Extravaganza, we're chatting about the D-grade MCU entry, Thor: The Dark World! Oh, if only they'd resisted the urge to shoehorn Loki into this film after his popularity skyrocketed! Why can't we see more of Asgard (or any of the other realms) and ignore all those Earth fools? And did they absolutely have to make the wonderful Christopher Eccleston act under all that makeup and spit all that fake language for dialogue? PLUS: David Bowie confirms that Moby is definitely not dating Natalie Portman on an all-new episode of David Bowie Updates!

Catch our VIRTUAL LIVE SHOW where we're talking about Ghostbusters: Afterlife and doing a night-of virtual Q&A, on Friday, July 29th! Click here for tickets.

S12 Ep618: Despicable Me Jun 28, 2022

Show notes

On this episode, the 2022 Summer Blockbuster Extravaganza heads to Toon Town as we chat about the, let's just say, not-for-us sensation, Despicable Me!

Precisely how many other film properties are we borrowing from with all this? Why does no vocal performance here feel inspired in any way whatsoever? And what in the world is with our society's fascination with these Minions? PLUS: How about an episode of beloved cartoon Doug if written by sentient toilet, Scott Adams!?

Despicable Me stars the voices of Steve Carell, Jason Segel, Russell Brand, Julie Andrews, Will Arnett, Kristen Wiig, Miranda Cosgrove, Dana Gaier, and Elsie Fisher; directed by Pierre Coffin and Chris Renaud.

S12 Ep617: Cats & Dogs Jun 21, 2022

Show notes

On this episode, the 2022 Summer Blockbuster Extravaganza gets all fun for the whole family with a polite, not-at-all crude conversation about the 2001 smash hit, Cats & Dogs! Is the CGI better in this film than in any of the prequels? How weird is it hearing Tobey Maguire voice this Aw Shucks gentle puppy? And are we to believe that Jeff Goldblum fathered this WASP child? PLUS: ScarJo and Colin discuss each other’s work!

Cats & Dogs stars Jeff Goldblum, Elizabeth Perkins, Alexander Pollock, and Miriam Margolyes, with the voices of Tobey Maguire, Alec Baldwin, Susan Sarandon, Sean Hayes, Joe Pantoliano, Michael Clarke Duncan, Jon Lovitz, and Charlton Heston; directed by Lawrence Guterman.

S12 Ep616: The Expendables 2 Jun 14, 2022

Show notes

On this week's episode, the Summer Blockbuster Extravaganza continues with the guys talking about the over-the-top sequel, The Expendables 2! How great is this cold open? Why did they insist on jamming all those 'cute' nostalgia lines into the script? And why do these kinds of movies treat Eastern Europe like some sort of eerie, faceless, Bermuda Triangle-type place? PLUS: A surprising edition of a popular show segment!

The Expendables 2 stars Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Bruce Willis, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Liam Hemsworth, Nan Yu, Randy Couture, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Terry Crews, Scott Adkins, Charisma Carpenter, and Chuck Norris as 'Booker'; directed by Simon West.

S12 Ep615: City Slickers Jun 07, 2022

Show notes

On this week's episode, the 2022 Summer Blockbuster Extravaganza—a period of time in the WHM schedule where they drop episodes exclusively on bigger, more well-known titles that may or may not have been released in the summer because the release date is actually irrelevant to the title of the series—kicks off with an episode on America's favorite midlife crisis drama/family western comedy, City Slickers! In a sea of good performances, how fantastic is Daniel Stern in this movie? Was Palance's Oscar win for his portrayal of Curly actually a make-good for a role earlier in his career? And what is with these boomers complaining about being able to take luxurious, high-priced vacations each and every year? PLUS: What’s the fantasy order of your human centipede made out of Comic Relief hosts?

City Slickers stars Billy Crystal, Daniel Stern, Bruno Kirby, Jack Palance, Helen Slater, Patricia Wettig, Noble Willingham, Tracey Walter, Josh Mostel, David Paymer, Bill Henderson, Jeffrey Tambor, Phill Lewis, and Yeardley Smith; directed by Ron Underwood.

Show notes

On this month's WLM, the guys are chatting about one of the all-time great Steve Spielberg classics, Jurassic Park! How out-of-this-world excellent is this John Williams score? Does it get any better than Goldblum and that open shirt? And would it have killed them to make it just the slightest bit—::DINOSAUR ROAR::! This episode is for subscribers only! S12 Ep613: Mortal Kombat (2021) May 31, 2022

Show notes

On this week's episode, the gang was live on the Internet a while back chatting about the 2021 Mortal Kombat reboot! Yes, this was the film that had a horrendously animated all-lizard Reptile, a really cool prologue sequence that feels like it's from another (better) movie, someone getting stabbed with their own frozen blood, and, you guessed it, a no-name protagonist that no one in the audience cares about! PLUS: The return of the VHS Trailer Game and a stupid t-shirt contest!

Mortal Kombat (2021) stars Lewis Tan, Jessica McNamee, Josh Lawson, Joe Taslim, Mehcad Brooks, Tadanobu Asano, Chin Han, Ludi Lin, Max Huang, and Hiroyuki Sanada as Scorpion; directed by Simon McQuoid.
