Growing up in Baltimore, I was exposed to so much music. Check out what I was listening to as a youth:

    1. Baltimore Club Music: This genre of music originated in Baltimore in the 1990s and is characterized by its fast beats, call-and-response style vocals, and use of samples from popular songs. Baltimore Club Music has had a huge influence on the city's dance music scene and is still played in clubs and parties today.
    2. Hip-hop: Baltimore has a thriving hip-hop scene, with many local artists gaining national recognition in recent years. The city has produced notable rappers such as Logic, Jpegmafia, and Tate Kobang, among others.
    3. Go-go: This genre of music originated in nearby Washington D.C. and has a strong presence in Baltimore as well. Go-go music is known for its funky rhythms and use of live percussion instruments, and has influenced many hip-hop and R&B artists.
    4. House and techno: Baltimore also has a strong electronic dance music scene, with many clubs and parties featuring house and techno music. Some notable Baltimore-based DJs and producers in this genre include Karizma, DJ Technics, and DJ Spen.

Just make content, screw the likes Mar 12, 2023
    Show notes

While creating content is important, it's also important to pay attention to your audience's engagement and feedback. Likes and other forms of engagement can give you a good idea of what type of content resonates with your audience and can help you tailor your content to their interests.

However, it's also important not to become too fixated on likes and other forms of engagement. Obsessing over likes can lead to a focus on creating content that is designed to be popular rather than content that is authentic and true to your brand or message.

Ultimately, the most important thing is to create content that you believe in and that reflects your values and message. If you create content that is authentic and genuine, you are more likely to attract an audience that shares your interests and values, and that will engage with your content in a meaningful way.

So while it's important to pay attention to likes and other forms of engagement, it's also important to prioritize creating content that is true to your voice and message.

NEVER Handle a Song Request Like This! Mar 12, 2023
    Show notes

For DJs on how to handle song requests in a professional manner.

Firstly, it's important to remember that as a DJ, you are in charge of the music and the atmosphere of the event, and it's your job to ensure that the music fits the occasion and the preferences of the audience.

When a song request is made, it's essential to listen to the request politely and acknowledge the person making the request. If the request is not appropriate for the event or doesn't fit with the overall vibe, it's important to politely decline the request and explain why the song doesn't work.

If the request is something that can be played and fits with the overall theme and atmosphere of the event, it's important to thank the person for the request and let them know that you'll try to include the song in the playlist if possible.

It's also important to prioritize the requests that fit the event's overall vibe and the majority of the audience's preferences, rather than catering to individual requests that may not be suitable for the event.

In summary, DJs should handle song requests with professionalism and politeness, prioritizing the event's overall atmosphere and audience's preferences over individual requests that may not fit the occasion.

Every DJ should choose a market they know Mar 12, 2023
    Show notes

Choosing a market that a DJ knows can be beneficial, as it allows them to leverage their existing network and connections. They can also use their knowledge of the market to identify popular music genres and artists, which can help them create a playlist that resonates with the local audience.

However, it's worth noting that DJs can also expand their horizons and explore new markets. By doing so, they can gain new experiences, expand their network, and discover new music genres that they can incorporate into their playlists. Additionally, a DJ who can adapt to different markets and audiences may be more versatile and in-demand than one who only specializes in one market.

Ultimately, the decision of whether to choose a market they know or explore new ones depends on the DJ's goals and interests. Some may prefer to stick to a specific market to build a strong local following, while others may prefer to explore different markets to expand their reach and gain new experiences.

What to do when the crowd is not responding to you DJing Mar 11, 2023
    Show notes

As a DJ, it's natural to feel discouraged when the crowd isn't responding to your set. However, there are several things you can do to try and turn things around:

    1. Read the crowd: It's possible that the crowd isn't responding because you're not playing the right type of music for the crowd. Take a moment to observe the crowd and try to gauge what type of music they are into. You may need to switch up your set and play something more suited to their tastes.
    2. Build energy gradually: Sometimes, the crowd just needs a little time to warm up. Start with some slower or more low-key tracks and build up to the more high-energy tracks as the night progresses.
    3. Engage with the crowd: Make eye contact with people in the crowd, smile, and encourage them to dance. Use the microphone to hype up the crowd and get them excited about the music.
    4. Take risks: If you've tried everything and the crowd still isn't responding, it may be time to take a risk and play something unexpected. Try throwing in a track from a different genre or remixing a well-known song in a unique way. This can help shake things up and get the crowd back into the groove.

Remember, as a DJ, you have the power to set the mood and energy of the room. Don't get discouraged if the crowd isn't responding right away. Keep trying different approaches until you find something that works.

Should DJs Use Sound Mixers for events? Mar 11, 2023
    Show notes

Yes, DJs should use sound mixers for events as they are essential tools for controlling and shaping the sound. A sound mixer allows a DJ to adjust the volume, EQ, and other effects of each individual audio source (such as a turntable or CD player), and then blend them together into a seamless mix. This helps to create a balanced sound and ensures that each element of the mix can be heard clearly.

In addition, sound mixers also offer the ability to route audio to different outputs, such as speakers or headphones, which is crucial for monitoring and adjusting the sound during a performance. They can also be used to add effects such as reverb, delay, and compression, which can enhance the overall sound quality and create a unique atmosphere.

Overall, a sound mixer is a powerful tool that helps DJs to create a professional and polished performance, and is an essential part of any DJ's setup for events.
