    Season 5- Episode 24: Tam & Kerry Larnerd Sep 16, 2025
    Show notes

In this episode of the Workforce Connections Podcast, we hear the story of Tam and Kerry Larnerd, two long-time educators whose careers shaped thousands of students in Southern Nevada. Kerry, originally from South Africa, grew up in Carson City before moving to Las Vegas to attend UNLV. She began teaching English at Silverado High School and went on to serve as an administrator at schools like Vo-Tech (now Southeast CTA), where she helped build industry partnerships with companies like Tesla. Even after retiring, Kerry returned to the classroom and now teaches English at Del Sol Academy, where she continues to inspire students with her focus on relationships and real-world readiness.
Tam grew up in Binghamton, New York, where he first worked as a DJ before turning to education. After earning a degree in health education, he moved to Nevada and began teaching at Basic High School before becoming a principal at both Bob Miller Middle School and Spring Valley High School. At Spring Valley, he helped transform the campus into an International Baccalaureate magnet school. After retiring, Tam shifted to national advocacy, working with Peer Helpers Plus, a program that trains students to support peers through challenges like mental health struggles and suicide prevention. His work has expanded into Texas, New Jersey, and beyond, supported by foundations dedicated to youth mental wellness.
Beyond their professional impact, the Larnerds live a full and active life. They enjoy hockey games, pickleball, card nights with friends, and summers at their family cabin on Lake Ontario. Together, they’ve driven across the country multiple times, embraced outdoor adventures like Sea-Dooing, and made space for family and travel as part of their balance after decades in demanding school leadership roles.
When asked what advice they would give young people, Kerry emphasized that education is a “people business” and urged future educators to always keep students and relationships at the center. Tam advised patience, encouraging teachers to spend time in the classroom before moving into administration so that they can balance career growth with family. Their shared message is clear: teaching is a calling that requires passion, perseverance, and heart.

    Season 5- Episode 23: Anisa Stechert Sep 09, 2025
    Show notes

In this episode of the Workforce Connections Podcast, we meet Anisa Stechert, a Licensed Master Social Worker and psychedelic integration therapist at Nushama in New York City. Born in Las Vegas, Anisa moved to Florida at age 11 but has always considered Nevada home, with fond memories of Red Rock, Mount Charleston, and the YMCA swim team. She earned her B.A. in English in West Palm Beach and began her career as a Title I secondary English teacher, working with students facing trauma and systemic barriers. That experience shaped her passion for people’s stories and led her to nonprofit leadership roles supporting adult survivors of childhood sexual abuse, followed by research and policy work with the New York City Mayor’s Office of Criminal Justice. Anisa went on to earn her MSW at Columbia University, focusing on advanced generalist practice and program development.

Today, Anisa brings her lived experience, research background, and clinical training to her role at Nushama, where she helps patients undergoing ketamine-assisted therapy. She emphasizes that while ketamine provides a neurological “reset,” the true transformation comes through integration, the reflective process of meaning-making after treatment. She recently launched Mythnetics, a Nevada-based consulting practice that maps modern diagnoses to archetypal journeys, reframing them as invitations to healing. Nushama has engaged Mythnetics as it expands into Miami, where Anisa will play a leading role, with future plans to return her work to Nevada. During her recent visit, she connected with state leaders at the Governor’s Office of Economic Development, the Vegas Chamber, LVGEA, and UNLV Economic Development to explore how her innovative approach could serve the community.

Outside of work, Anisa finds grounding in yoga, reading, writing, creating botanical teas and essential oil blends, and long walks with her golden retriever, Annie Marie. Her advice to young people is simple but profound: pursue training, but more importantly, do your own inner work. Face your shadows, cultivate humility, and build authenticity, because guiding others through change requires first walking through it yourself.

    Season 5- Episode 22: Mylo Lopez Aug 25, 2025
    Show notes

In this episode of the Workforce Connections Podcast, we meet Mylo Lopez, principal architect, designer, and founder of MyloFleur. Born in Corona, California, to immigrant parents from Mexico, Mylo spent her childhood crossing between Mexicali and Calexico before her family settled in Las Vegas. She attended Las Vegas Academy, where she majored in Japanese and studied abroad in Japan, and later earned her degree in landscape architecture at UNLV. This path combined her love of design with her professors’ encouragement to see plants and spaces as a form of storytelling.
Mylo’s career began while helping her mother with event work at MGM Resorts, where she became captivated by floral design and the way flowers could transform spaces. This passion grew into MyloFleur, a company that has worked on everything from weddings and large-scale casino events to the Grammys after-party in Las Vegas. Today, Mylo and her team are contributing to the new Civic Center Campus in downtown Las Vegas, creating biophilic design elements that bring life and emotion into public spaces.
Her creative process is deeply influenced by her dyslexia, which taught her to see the world through color, texture, and movement rather than words. This perspective allows her to connect with clients on an emotional level, turning events into experiences that people remember for a lifetime. She also prioritizes sustainability, often donating or repurposing floral materials rather than letting them go to waste. Outside of her business, Mylo is a pianist, an avid reader, and the founder of Land to Land, a nonprofit supporting refugees in Mexico. She values creating quiet retreat spaces for reflection and creativity, a balance that keeps her grounded while giving back to her community.
Mylo’s advice for young people is rooted in her own journey: honor your heritage and your parents, avoid comparisons, and become the architect of your own life. She reminds listeners that failure is part of growth, but resilience and creativity can turn challenges into opportunities. With her upcoming website relaunch and retail expansion, Mylo continues to push boundaries while staying true to her mission of creating designs that connect people, places, and emotions.

    Season 5- Episode 21: Dina Babsky Aug 19, 2025
    Show notes

In this episode of the Workforce Connections Podcast, we sit down with Dina Babsky, Director of Economic and Urban Development for the City of Las Vegas, to hear her inspiring journey and learn about the exciting projects shaping the city’s future.

Born in Uzbekistan, Dina came to the U.S. at age 15 through the Department of State’s Future Leaders Exchange Program. She spent a year in Wolf City, Texas, returned home to finish high school, and later came back to earn her bachelor’s in business administration from Texas A&M University Commerce. After starting her career in Texas as a sales service manager for a corrugated box manufacturer, she eventually moved to Las Vegas in 2012. There, she earned a master’s in management information systems from UNLV and worked for the City of Henderson before joining the City of Las Vegas in 2017. Her previous role managing the city’s Strategic Initiatives Office paved the way to her current position, where she leads redevelopment, business attraction, and economic diversification efforts.

Dina shares her passion for seeing projects come to life, from small neighborhood businesses to large-scale developments like the new high-rise residential tower downtown. She discusses the city’s priorities of public safety, healthcare, and economic diversification, highlighting initiatives in the medical district, innovation hubs, and programs that support entrepreneurs with grants, security upgrades, and visual improvements. She also offers a preview of the upcoming Civic Center opening and ribbon-cutting on September 4th, along with future restaurant openings and public spaces designed to foster community engagement.

Outside of work, Dina enjoys traveling, karaoke, playing piano, and spending time with her husband, three sons, and stepdaughter. Her advice to young people: Don’t be afraid to change direction if a job isn’t fulfilling. Careers can take many turns before you find the right fit. Keep going, stay open to opportunities, and don’t be afraid to start over.
