#257 Win Van Zwam, USSF and UEFA Licensing and Coach Mentor, on Coaching the Person First, Creating a Great Learning Environment, and Why Every Coach Needs a Mentor Jan 28, 2022
    Show notes

Wim Van Zwam (www.TwoWayCoaching.com) is the former lead instructor for United States Soccer Federation Pro license, and currently is back in the Netherlands teaching the UEFA A Youth license. He works in a mentorship and instruction role with coaches at the professional academies in the Netherlands such as Ajax, AZ Alkmaar, Go Ahead Eagles and others. He is preparing to teach the UEFA B course for ex-pro players who want to start a coaching career, and since July 2021 he has worked as a coach of coaches for a professional coach and his staff who work at the second tier of pro soccer in the Netherlands. Wim is a wealth of knowledge on mentorship, creating optimal learning environments, and the X's and O's of football (soccer). But more so, he understands the human element of teaching and leading athletes, and is dedicated to helping coaches to see the person in front of them before they see the athlete. We also talk about why every coach needs a mentor, and how powerful it is for a coach to be coached!

#256 Joe Towne, Actor and Performance Coach: Developing a Winning Mindset, Working Through Adversity, Self Talk, and Learning from Failure Jan 21, 2022
    Show notes

Joe Towne (@MeJoeTowne) is an actor, producer, writer and performance coach and mentor for numerous athletes, actors, broadcast professionals and more. His professional journey has taken him from coast to coast and across the Atlantic. He graduated with a BA in Theater from The University of Southern California and interned at 20th Century Fox. Joe then headed back east, where he pursued a career in theater and embarked on a 30-year journey that took him to the UK and back. Along the way, he studied at NYC's Stella Adler with June Stein and with Gary Austin, founder and creator of The Groundlings.

Some of Joe's most acclaimed roles include an "unfailingly imaginative!" 30-minute Star Wars Trilogy recap that was featured on BBC radio and performed live for George Lucas at Skywalker Ranch, Mr. Pink in Edinburgh Fringe Fest's highly rated production of Reservoir Dogs and opposite Rebel Wilson in the New Line feature film Isn't It Romantic.

We brought Joe on the podcast because athletes and those who lead them have so much to learn from people in theater, who experience way more failure than successes, who struggle with adversity and must overcome negative self talk, and so many other areas of the inner game. Joe gives us some great tools and ideas for being mentally strong and learning from our toughest moments. Sound useful for your athletes?

#252 How to Transform the Culture of Your Youth Sports Program with Nate Baldwin, Founder of Red Ball Nation (replay) Dec 24, 2021
    Show notes

Nate Baldwin (@NBaldwin75) has nearly 20 years of recreational sports industry experience as an entrepreneur, program administrator, and advocate for inclusive, high quality sport experiences. Nate's diverse career has spanned from the creation and management of a successful adult recreation organization in Denver, CO, to the revitalization of the Appleton (WI) Parks & Recreation youth sports program, and as a client consultant in technology deployment and program management with registration management platform provider, LeagueApps (NY). He is the Founder of Red Ball Nation, which provides a range of complementary services and programs to help promote systemic change in the delivery of recreational sports programming in the United States and beyond.

This episode is a replay of our interview with Nate in 2018 when he was the Sports Director for Appleton, and we discuss how he and his team transformed the programming there, grew participation by leaps and bounds, established core values, and educated parents and coaches. It is a remarkable story of what can be done in recreational sports programming with a clear vision and a great team.
