Musicians + Sports: Jake Owen On His Favorite Golf Courses In America Sep 05, 2014
    Show notes

    By Scott T. Sterling

While Iggy Azalea‘s “Fancy” may have been crowned the official song for the summer of 2014, plenty of country fans would gladly hand that title to “Beachin’,” Jake Owen‘s breezy ode to “sunshine, blue eyes, tan lines.”

While the laid-back, lilting track from his fourth studio album, Days of Gold, was originally released as a single back in February, it slow-burned its way up to hit No. 1 on both Billboard‘s Country Airplay and Hot Country charts during the heart of summer in early July.

The Florida native almost bypassed a career in music as a budding young athlete with his eye on playing golf in college at Florida State University before an injury derailed that plan.

“It ended up not happening when I hurt my shoulder and had surgery,” Owen explained during an interview with Radio.com. “That’s kind of what led me to pick up a guitar and start playing that. I had to find something to do.”

Owen still likes to spend quality time on the links, having played some of the country’s most prestigious golf course with family, friends and one of the sport’s hottest emerging stars.

“I’ve been able to play some really great golf courses. Most importantly, I think it’s the time I’ve spent with people playing those golf courses,” he explained. “I got to play Augusta National with my dad. That was a big deal. I played Pine Valley a couple of weeks ago with some friends of mine. Pebble Beach is a great golf course out in California that I’ve played many times. I’ve played the Pebble Beach Pro-Am there the last couple of years, and that’s a lot of fun. I got to play with my friend Jordan Spieth, who’s the new young sensation out there on the PGA tour. I feel really lucky to be able to play those kind of places with great people and make great memories.”

Watch Owen talk about his love of watching sports, including soccer (“I never thought I’d ever say that”), which NBA and MLB superstars would make up his fantasy all-athlete band and more in the video interview above.

Rihanna to Soundtrack ‘Thursday Night Football’ Sep 04, 2014
    Show notes

    By Shannon Carlin, Radio.com

Rihanna may not be interested in paying to play this year’s NFL Super Bowl Halftime Show, but she has no problem lending her voicing to help kick off Thursday Night Football.

Earlier this week, CBS and the NFL Network announced that Jay Z’s 2009 song “Run This Town” featuring Rihanna and Kanye West is the new theme music of Thursday Night Football.

The new open will no longer ask, “Are you ready for some football?!” but “Who will run this town?!”

Along with Rihanna’s voice — Jay Z and ‘Ye unfortunately didn’t make the cut — the theme will also feature narration from House of Lies star Don Cheadle, who will help set-up each Thursday night rivalry.

Luke Bryan Added to ‘Fashion Rocks’ 2014 TV Special Aug 25, 2014
    Show notes

    By Annie Reuter, Radio.com

Luke Bryan may be known more for his hip-shaking skills than his fashion sense, but that won’t stop the country star from adding his swagger to this year’s Fashion Rocks concert.

Bryan is the newest addition to the two-hour show, a live TV special that takes place Sept. 9 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York and is scheduled for broadcast on CBS. He joins a previously announced lineup that includes Afrojack, Duran Duran, Jennifer Hudson, Jennifer Lopez, KISS, MAGIC!, Miranda Lambert, Nico & Vinz, Pitbull, Rita Ora, The Band Perry and Usher.

Bryan will become very familiar with Brooklyn’s Barclays Center as he’ll be back on Sept. 14 for his own headlining performance, after a show Sept. 12 at Madison Square Garden. Both show are part of his massive 2014 That’s My Kind of Night Tour. In October, Bryan also takes a detour for his sixth annual Farm Tour, which kicks off in Knoxville, Tenn., on Oct. 1 and runs through Oct. 11 with stops in Alabama, Florida, Georgia and South Carolina.

In early 2014, Bryan will head to Mexico to host Crash My Playa, a four-night concert event (Jan. 23-27) taking place along the Riviera Maya on Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula.

Fashion Rocks airs Tuesday, Sept. 9 at 9pm ET/PT on CBS.

Musicians + Sports: Jerrod Niemann on Dreams of Sports Commentating and Waiting to Hear Back from Aaron Rodgers Aug 22, 2014
    Show notes

    By Scott T. Sterling

Like countless other hardcore sports fans across America, country music star Jerrod Niemann is ready for some football.

For one, the “Drink to That All Night” singer-songwriter wants another stab at making NFL game picks for CBS Local after a less than stellar showing against fellow country artists including Justin Moore and Rodney Atkins back in 2012.

“They were just going win or lose on that thing. I was going by the line, the actual way you bet, so all my picks were really wrong,” he admitted during a recent video interview. “I would like another fair shot, now that I know the rules.”

Niemann’s love of sports is enough that if given a chance, he’d follow augment his successful career in music for a chance to go head-to-head with two of ESPN‘s most outspoken and controversial commentators.

“I would sit there with Skip Bayless and Stephen A. Smith and mediate when they get heated,” he revealed. “I like watching those guys. I’m pretty sure I saw Stephen A. Smith running down the street today. I’m serious. If that was you, Stephen A., call me. We’ll drink some whiskey.”

The singer was also eager to talk about his burgeoning friendship with star Green Bay Packers quarterback, Aaron Rodgers, after a chance meeting at a show.

“When we were in Green Bay on the Brad Paisley tour, I was backstage when this guy walked by me and I was like, ‘that looks like Aaron Rodgers.’ It ended up being him, and later we all got onstage and did Brad’s song, ‘Alcohol,’ together,” Niemann remembered. “Then he came on my bus and we just hung out. I thought, ‘man, what a great guy.’ So a lot of the Green Bay Packers, I got to meet a few of them that night and Aaron and I swapped information. We text every now and then, but he hasn’t been texting me back lately. I guess he’s moved on. He must’ve got Lee Brice‘s number or something.”

Niemann is on tour across America through early December in support of his latest album, High Noon. Following dates opening for Keith Urban and hitting state fairs in Oklahoma and East Texas, he’ll be headlining a slew of shows including stops in New York (Nov. 1), Chicago (Nov. 13), Detroit (Nov. 15) and Houston (Dec. 4).

Bow Wow Will Play A Hacker On ‘CSI: Cyber’ Aug 20, 2014
    Show notes

    By Ezra Marcus, Radio.com

As if Ice-T reading an audio book wasn’t enough, Shad Moss, perhaps better known as Bow Wow, also has a new day job: he’ll soon be appearing on TV with Patricia Arquette and James Van Der Beek in CBS‘ new series CSI: Cyber.

He will play a hacker named Brody “Baby Face” Nelson, who must work with the police or go to jail.

Nelson must assist the cops in the shadier corners of the web without falling back into his criminal ways. According to creator Anthony E. Zuiker, “Bow Wow is a gifted young actor who will have the responsibility, through his character, to set an example for young people who watch the show to ‘do what’s right’ even when you know ‘nothing but wrong.’ It will be a redemption story and a cautionary tale all wrapped into one.

“The role of Nelson required someone with deep acting chops and off the charts smarts. Shad Moss is a unique talent that possesses both.”

(BLOG) Rollergirl Shares Her Top Stories We Missed For The Week Aug 16, 2014
    Show notes

The Rays have been in Texas all week eating 3lb hotdogs called “Boomsticks” and honestly all I have been doing is watching Shark Week, but I’m sure there has to be some Stories We Missed!

Thursday night the SEC Network launched with our very own Booger McFarland. The network will cover over 1,000 games and tell you everything you ever wanted to know about the conference. I swear ESPN loves Tim Tebow more than Marc Ryan, because on the night of the launch they celebrated Tebow’s birthday by giving him a cake live on TV from Albert the Alligator, the gator mascot. Tebow turned 27 years old.

This week Candlestick Park celebrated the end of an era with an explosive show with over 900 pyrotechnic effects and Sir Paul McCartney performing to a sold out crowd. In the coming weeks, demolition crews will start tearing down the aging stadium.

For all my golf fans Monday night you have to watch “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon”. Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods will be on television together. This week Tiger pulled out of the Ryder Cup due to his ongoing so called “back issues”. McIlroy is the current world number-one and is coming off his fourth career major title at the PGA Championship this past weekend.

I am not a fantasy football person. That being said, if your the boss of a company you may consider this… According to a study was performed by Challenger, Gray and Christmas, a consultancy firm out of Chicago, they estimated that employers are losing over $13 billion each year because of fantasy football. They determined team owners spend about two hours a day researching and working on their “teams” instead of their real job.

(BLOG) Rollergirl Gets You Caught Up With This Week’s Stories We Missed Aug 09, 2014
    Show notes

It’s been a very busy week with Tiger showing up to play Valhalla, the Bucs getting ready for their first preseason game and the Rays on a long 10 game road trip but there’s plenty of stories we missed.

Early in the week The Princeton Review came out with its annual list of the nation’s top party schools. Landing at number one this year is Syracuse University. The University of Iowa is second, followed by the University of California-Santa Barbara in third. West Virginia University and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign round out the top five this year. The University of Florida came in at #10

Paul George suffered a gruesome leg injury during a Team USA scrimmage in Las Vegas. We all saw the video, and X-Rays of the injury were tweeted out as well. However, the good news came a day after the injury when Paul George decided to treat himself. He purchased a brand new Ferrari convertible. The catch is he can’t drive it for some time while his leg is in a cast healing.

Who do you want to see perform at Super Bowl XLIX? Beyonce, Justin Timberlake, maybe Weird Al Yankovic? There’s a petition online to get Weird AL to be the halftime performer for the 2015 game. He has a new album out this year called Mandatory Fun. The point of this petition is that he is a good family friendly entertainer and would be something different.

Wayne Gretzky is a little upset with Dustin Johnson…as he should be. Dustin Johnson voluntarily took a leave of absence from the PGA Tour. Reportedly, Gretzky told Johnson to curb his partying or else Johnson no longer would have his blessing to marry his daughter, Paulina. Johnson and Paulina Gretzky have been dating since 2012 and got engaged August 2013.

Musicians + Sports: Weird Al Yankovic On His Chances Of Performing At The Super Bowl Aug 08, 2014
    Show notes

    By Scott T. Sterling

Weird Al Yankovic has built a long-standing and flourishing career by pushing the most extreme aspects of pop and music culture even further into the realm of the ridiculous.

Over the course of his seemingly endless string of hits spun out of songs by the likes of Michael Jackson, Nirvana and Coolio, Weird Al has never turned his attention to the wide world of sports — until now.

On his recently released fourteenth studio album (and his first to hit No. 1 on the Billboard Top 200), Mandatory Fun, Yankovic had fun with the sporting world on the track “Sports Song,” which he told Radio.com was inspired by classic college fight songs during a recent interview.

The renowned accordion player also addressed the groundswell of support from his fans for him to be tapped to perform during halftime at the Super Bowl, consistently the most-watched TV broadcast around the world. There’s even a Change.org petition with close to 9000 signatures demanding that Yankovic get his shot at the biggest game of the year.

“I absolutely have heard about it, and I’m extremely flattered by it,” Yankovic said. “It became sort of a big movement, and a lot of people were putting energy into that. I knew that I would never actually be asked to perform at the Super Bowl, so I never got nervous about it. If I had been asked, I would never stop throwing up from nervousness. I know that’s never going to happen in reality, but it got me thinking, well, what would I do if I did in fact play the Super Bowl, which is one of the reasons that I wrote ‘Sports Song.'”

Related: Fans Demand Weird Al Yankovic Headline Super Bowl Halftime in New Petition

While we contemplate how Yankovic would navigate the tricky costume changes between “Eat It” and “Amish Paradise” during the 15-minute Super Bowl halftime performance slot, watch him pontificate on the origins of “Sports Song,” which specific sport he’d most enjoy mocking musically and which instrument Michael Jordan would likely shred in this exclusive video interview.

    By Courtney E. Smith

“What are the rules about biting the Wold Cup?” Bruce Springsteen wondered, when TMZ caught him on the streets of New York City and inquired about his thoughts on this week’s most infamous sports moment.

Yesterday (June 24), during a World Cup match between Uruguay and Italy, Uruguay player Luis Suárez bit Italian defender, Giorgio Chiellini.

According to CBS Sports, with the match tied at 0-0 in the second half and Uruguay needing a win to move forward to the Round of 16, Suárez appeared to bite Chiellini in the shoulder. The Italian player than pulled his jersey down off his shoulder in an attempt to show the referee the apparent bite marks on his skin.
