Wrestling Omakase #134: 90s Puro Draft & Wrestle-1 Closure w/ Paul, Gerard & Flae Mar 02, 2020

Show notes

This week on Wrestling Omakase it's time for our first fantasy draft of 2020 with our first historical draft ever, the 90s Puro Draft! With the Coronavirus unfortunately at least postponing the beginning of the New Japan Cup, we had to switch around this week's episode (and we still hope to bring you the originally planned NJC Pick 'Em down the line if things work out) but we've still got a really fun episode for you this week! John is joined by returning guests Gerard (@GerardDiTrolio) and Paul (@Darth_Dragon) and debuting guest Flae (@flaeblazer) for a great deal of draft fun. But before they begin their draft, the four of them break into a bit of a mini-discussion on the other breaking news out of Japan this week: the upcoming closure of the Wrestle-1 promotion. Hear their thoughts on some of the company's seven-year history, the sudden announcement of their closure and what could be (and what probably isn't) behind it, and they go over W-1's remaining schedule of shows as well. This is definitely a topic Omakase plans to revisit on future episodes so stay tuned!

After that's over they begin their draft with the following simple rules: only men's wrestlers are eligible (so we can do a separate 90s Joshi Draft episode later on) and only wrestlers who appeared in at least 10 matches in Japan in the 1990s. After the order is picked all four of them each make 22 total picks, and once they've all made their picks they put together their dream supercards. In a day or two John will be posting a poll on Twitter where you can decide for yourself who put together the best 90s Puro dream supercard, so go to @wrestleomakase on Twitter and vote! It's a real fun time picking from the best of Japanese wrestling in the 90s!

Show notes

This week on Wrestling Omakase we talk FIVE big Korakuen shows from two different Japanese wrestling companies! John is joined by returning guest Hayley (@choerrycoloured) to discuss a very busy week of action, starting with four straight nights at Korakuen from New Japan. Hear their thoughts on the two very different retirements of Tiger Hattori and Manabu Nakanishi, four title matches, Hayley's opinion of the Tanahashi/Ibushi team in general from the perspective of a big Kota fan, the Naito-Hiromu feud and a possible burgeoning Naito-Ospreay rivalry, which unit they're very sick of, and much more! Once they're finished with all four shows from NJPW their attention turns to DDT's Into the Fight Korakuen from Sunday, featuring the crowning of a first-ever DDT Universal Champion, an awesome KO-D Openweight Title challenge for MAO, a SWORD changes hands multiple times, and more. Plus John and Hayley talk about the currently running anime series Magia Record (and the original Madoka too for good measure), debate what makes a good heel and much more. It's a packed episode of Korakuen action, this week!

STR 391. Lazy River Feb 23, 2020

Other than NXT Portland, it seems all three major shows sort of phoned it in. So after we gush about what we liked on that show, we're rambling about whatever comes up. The Lacey Evans reboot that wasn't. Does Vince hate Christianity? Is Austin Theory a guy or a geek?
