Buddies, you know how important quality and good sounding vinyl are to record collectors everywhere. Today on the pod I speak with Jeff Betten, founder of Hellbender Vinyl in Pittsburgh, PA who gives us a peak behind the curtain of their facility. Open for just under two years now, Hellbender has quickly developed a reputation for quality and creative solutions. As Jeff says "if you can dream it up, we can make it happen". Here Jeff shares the origins of Hellbender, and how an ambitious idea turned into a business plan, and then a full-fledged pressing plant in a town synonymous with building and making things. That local DNA isn't lost on them, including their mission statement: "Hellbent on quality. Hellbent on service. One of America's most trusted vinyl record pressing plants".

Jeff is a musician himself and has been part of the Pittsburgh music scene for a bit, including time spent at a couple labels in the city. From large runs for household names acts, to smaller orders for indie bands just breaking in, Hellbender serves artists and their fans alike by creating great vinyl to share with the world. Aloha Buddies! Back at the control deck here on Vinyl Community Podcasts to talk about a topic on my mind lately: why is there gatekeeping in this Vinyl Community of ours? For this convo I'm joined by Friend of the Show (FOS) Matt from the YouTube channel Vinyl Reckoning as we explore the whats and whys as to how record collecting is a hobby often prone to tactics, commentaries, and attitudes that can not be as inviting or inclusive as we'd hope it can be. Is this a generational thing? Does every hobby seem to have so-called "gatekeeping" to new entries young and old? Or is it just a bi-product of our internet culture run amok? We also extend the conversation to whether or not this attitude by the few affects the many in the form of gaslighting people who are simply wanting to share their vinyl journey with others online; be it on YouTube, forum boards, or social media platforms. Personally I've seen it push people out of the community (a real shame), and been on the receiving end of it from a small handful of people myself. Beer & Vinyl | Interview with Frank Secich (Blue Ash, Stiv Bators, Deadbeat Poets) Jul 15, 2024

For his latest pour on Vinyl Community Podcasts, Alex (Beer & Vinyl) is back with an interview with musician Frank Secich.

Here's quick bio:

Frank Secich (born June 14, 1951) is an American rock musician, songwriter, author and record producer. He was the bass player and founding member of the group Blue Ash from 1969 to 1979 and guitarist and bassist for the Stiv Bators band from 1979 until 1981. He played in the Cleveland-based group Club Wow with Jimmy Zero of the Dead Boys from 1982 to 1985 and produced the Ohio band the Infidels from 1985 to 1990. He is currently the rhythm guitarist for the Deadbeat Poets who were formed in 2006 in Youngstown, Ohio. Frank Secich's autobiography "Circumstantial Evidence" was published by High Voltage Publishing of Australia in 2015. His second book "Not That Way Anymore" was published in November 2023 by High Voltage Publishing. His current band, The Deadbeat Poets are on Pop Detective Records, which is owned by Mark Hershberger.

In 1973, Youngstown, OH Band Blue Ash released their debut record "No More, No Less" to critical acclaim. (Alex note: not only do I critically acclaim it, I put it up there with one of the best Power Pop records of the 70s and all time!). Buddies! I had the great fortune to befriend the latest guest on "Mind of The Record Collector' during my latest visit to the Austin Record Convention in May. Ari Crane has been collecting records for several decades, traversing the country in search of the obscure, the unusual, and the rare pieces of wax many of us only hear about. A fixture on the record show circuit, the stories Ari shares here are GOLD (just like the ones he shared in Austin with me during our first meeting). He's been a record store owner, served as Consignment Director of Vinyl Records and Music Memorabilia for Heritage Auctions, and now leads his latest endeavor - Vinyl4Vets.com - putting vinyl and means to listen to it into the hands of the heroes who serve this country. It's a wide-ranging talk, including why Ari believes encapsulation (ie "slabbing") will move a section of the hobby forward in a way similar to sports cards, comics, etc., and he may even pull out some mega rare records in his own collection that he's decided to archive in this fashion. Back in the building Buddies with another pod-exclusive presentation here on Vinyl Community Podcasts! Touching on a topic that's recently been in the news with Billie Eilish and her recent Billboard interview talking about the cash grab that persists with the overproduction of vinyl color and cover variants. Sure, there's a free market component to this topic, but she was also talking about the environmental effects that producing so many different vinyl variations is having from a sustainability perspective. Concert Buddie | I Sold On Whatnot (Now What) with Spinz Vinyl Mar 27, 2024

The record keeps spinning, Buddies! Another brief pod-only show here on Vinyl Community Podcasts, this time joined by friend of the pod Jason (Spinz Vinyl) who recently took the plunge to selling records on the ecommerce platform Whatnot. If you are unfamiliar, Whatnot is an application/website that is hosted by individual sellers (sometimes including brick & mortar shop owners) selling their wares through the medium. It extends beyond vinyl records and includes sports cards, video games, clothing, shoes (and a ton more). Jason recently tried his hand at selling records in conjunction with his partnership with MION Records, and held two auctions right out of the gate. Here he shares he thoughts on the platform, why he is selling records there, how he chooses titles to sell there, and (most importantly) would he do it again (SPOILER: he is on March 30th at 12pm PST/3pm EST). In one of the most overdue 'sodes in Vinyl Community Podcasts history, we finally - FINALLY - get the OG of the Vinyl Community - Brandon (MrHoffame) in the hot seat of the VCP exclusive series: Mind of The Record Collector. Brandon was literally one of the first in the community to begin sharing his collecting journey on YouTube and taking us along for the ride. Like many, I've learned a great deal from Brandon over the years: first through his videos themselves, then as I've been fortunate to get to know him personally, outside of the "VC". In fact, I've definitely "borrowed" several practices + approaches to how he's built and shaped his collection over the years. In a word, his collection is INSANE. Not only that, he has one of the best listening + collection rooms out there. We touch on that, plus talk about those quiet early days of slowing finding others online to share the collecting journey with, discuss the different "levels" to collecting we've both experienced, and share another bi-product of his collection prowess: his new curation venture of building collections for others (Sounds of You). Concert Buddie | Discogs World Tour: What is Discogs Cooking Up? Mar 11, 2024

Aloha Buddies! One constant in the ever changing record collecting hobby of ours is the pre-imminent tool we use to grow and develop our collections: Discogs. Unquestionably the largest vinyl record database out there, it has made it easier and more accessible to collect our favorite pieces of music, predominantly on vinyl. Likewise, the marketplace aspect of the platform has helped to bridge the divide from the rare and limited releases to collectors across the globe. In the past few weeks, the head leadership at Discogs has popped up on a couple Vinyl Community channels to discuss their business, and the timing of these chats without any high level launch/product change/etc. is curious (to me). Another channel in the community (Tom c/o High Rant District) also noticed this and recently shared some takes that pushed my curiosity into overdrive. This 'sode talks about those confluences, my own thoughts on Discogs in it's current state, and things that I strongly feel need to be addressed to continue to give buyers and sellers alike confidence in using the platform (even in the face of next to no competition in this space; a space they have essentially created themselves).
