It isn’t every day I get to peek into the heart of an entrepreneur and creator of an amazing audio adventures series! I had the pleasure of interviewing Bill Heid, and by the end, I felt we were two long lost friends. Bill shared his heart and his focus on creating audio adventures for Christian families, and his desire to leave a legacy to his grandchildren. It gets better… these adventures are fast moving audio dramas designed to teach Christian history in a fun and engaging way and the productions also include a free study guide that you can use as curriculum for a “living” lesson in Christian history.

Many of the “voices” of the characters in the albums are people you will recognize, such as Kirk Cameron, Brian Blessed, Brian Cox, Tom Baker, Honeysuckle Weeks, Cathy Sara, and John Rhys-DaviesBrian Blessed, Brian Cox, Tom Baker, Honeysuckle Weeks, Cathy Sara, and John Rhys-Davies… to name a few!

Bill has several former Adventures In Odyssey writers and sound designers working on the Heirloom team as well. He’s really passionate about achieving excellence in the story telling aspect as well as having great production values. The high-quality standards coupled with a strong and distinctly Christian world and life view, make these audio adventures albums keepsake quality.

There’s a new Audio Adventure series available… that tells great stories from Christian history and it’s designed to build character, courage, and imagination in your kids. Show Notes – Teaching Kids to Think

Teaching kids to think for themselves is my pet peeve… one year in teaching a class at church I was astounded to find that the students could not give me answers to questions about their thoughts about God – they wanted to know if it was the correct answer… seriously! How do you raise kids that think? Can you teach kids to think? I say, yes – and here are the main points I make in this podcast on Vintage Homeschool Moms.

    Teaching Kids to THINK by…

    1. Giving them a good foundation
    2. Teach them the definition of worldview
    3. Give them colored glasses – different colors if you can find them – discuss
    4. Read good books as a family – read aloud – and discuss
    5. Fill minds with GOOD – garbage in garbage out
    6. Explain consequences – school of thought of “formation” and understanding
    7. Give them time to think
    8. Have good discussions – family discussions
    9. Discuss – good – better – best – God’s version
    10. Understanding choices

    Episode 151

How can you combat homeschool chaos when your life is so full and so busy? Is your homeschool out of control – did you have a really bad day and were ready to retreat? If you’ve homeschooled more than one day – you know what I’m talking about. In this episode of Vintage Homeschool Moms, Felice shares ways to combat those homeschool chaos days.

    Combat Homeschool Chaos Show Notes:

We’ve all had that really bad homeschool day when we question everything.

    1. Our competency to homeschool
    2. Whether or not we are ruining our kids
    3. If we are doing the right thing
    4. If we made a mistake

Why do we question? What makes a really bad homeschool day?

    1. What is your definition of a “bad” homeschool day?
    2. Stop the audio and make a list of all the things that fall into this “bad” day – what are the key triggers that make you feel like the day isn’t going well? Be honest.
    3. Listen to the audio …
    4. After you listen to the audio – answer your own “bad” day questions. What are ways you can combat these bad days?

The times when things are not going as you planned or well for you is NOT the time to psychoanalyze your decision to homeschool – JUST SAY NO to the negative thoughts…

    1. You are competent to homeschool – there are so many programs available at the click of a mouse so that question is completely off the table.
    2. You are NOT ruining your kids – believe me…
    3. YOU are doing the right thing – what is happening out there in the school system? Think “common core.”
    4. You did NOT make a mistake – homeschooling is not for losers it is for people who really care enough about their kids to give “up” so the world will tell you – nothing is as important as homeschooling your children. Nothing.

Please download this PDF and hang it up in your home – remind yourself this is TRUE!

    Memorization Works Aug 29, 2016

memorization worksLet’s Talk About Why Memorization Works with Felice Gerwitz

    Podcast 149

Don’t tell me – you have some preconceived ideas of what this podcast is all about – truthfully, I hated the idea of memorization and never required my children to do any memorization. But, memorization works! The first two children did plenty of hands-on learning, but they ended up memorizing things all on their own. My youngest three children were “subjected” to memorization and their skills improved beyond my expectations. (And, my expectations can be very high!) Join me as I discuss how memorization works and some ideas for getting started – also look at some of the resources and links below.

    Show Notes: Memorization Works!

Here is the train of thought out there …

    1. I believe kids will memorize – but things that are meaningful to them
    2. Kids will memorize due to repetition – for example playing video games, using the manual with video hacks
    3. Rote memory is important because it prepares them for higher learning later on
    4. Younger children should memorize because they are like sponges and their minds are easily adaptable to more information

    So what do you do??

    1. Are you disciplined enough to encourage memorization?
    2. What works for you and your family?
    3. How do your kids do with memorization of facts?
    4. Why is it important for you to encourage your kids to memorize?
