Teens and Moms | I love my teens! Teens and moms have a sacred relationship - or we should! Our babies are growing up! | #podcast #homeschoolpodcastTeens and Moms Communicating Episode 329

I love my teens! Teens and moms have a sacred relationship – or we should! Our babies are growing up! While it is exciting to watch our children grow and mature, it is also a scary thought. If you have little kids please do not skip this episode. I believe you’ll receive good information that you can begin using today, no matter what your children’s ages.

I’ve been through this a few times, five to be exact. So, you can say I have some experience with this situation. I recall friends talking about raging hormones when my kids were little and I thought it was a horrible way to describe teens. Teens deserve our respect and yes, teens should respect adults. Bad behavior is never excused nor is it allowed to continue.

The teens years begin on paper when a child turns thirteen, however, the teen years are thirteen years in the making. The way we raise our children will impact the way our teens act when they receive this milestone.

Believe me kids don’t wake up one day and say, “Today I’ll make my mom’s life miserable. In the same way that parents don’t decide that today is a good day to begin restrictions. Raising kids is a dance that begins when they are little and we begin to put our first restrictions down. Most of the restrictions are in keeping our kids safe.

Foundations should already be set and in place so when the teen years occur the family continues on as usual but it is also a time when serious conversations should be added and that includes taking the time to be mom and dad.

    Good Foundations:

    1. Open lines of communication.
    2. Clearly laid out rules. Curfew, etc.
    3. Ideas on dating (or not!)
    4. School work requirements.
    5. Chores, etc.

Respect is earned on all parts. Yes, our children should be respectful but we should

    Matthew 10: 13-16

    Proverbs 17:6

    Leviticus 19:3

    Deuteronomy 10:20

    Exodus 21:17

I pray that the teen years are joyous for you and your children and it is a time for your teens to discover what the Lord has in store for their lives!

Curriculum Essentials | It is a fact that every homeschool needs curriculum essentials and in this podcast, we will discuss some books that will help you with your homeschool! #podcast #homeschoolpodcastThree Homeschool Curriculum Essentials with Tyler Hogan Episode 328

It is a fact that every homeschool needs curriculum essentials and in this podcast, we will discuss some books that will help you with your homeschool!

Tyler Hogan is a homeschool graduate, homeschool dad and now President of Bright Ideas Press. Today, Tyler joins Felice Gerwitz and shares some important information homeschool parents need to know, three books that are curriculum essentials.

Tyler enjoyed his homeschool journey with mom, and author, Maggie Hogan. Maggie used maps to teach the boys and this made an impression on Tyler. He wrote North Star Geography because he believes geography is an under-taught subject. This book will help children discover a love for geography because of the interwoven way the book is written. It is for middle through high school students. This book is written in three parts, one discovering maps, geography tools, and GPS, two, physical geography and earth science, and three, human geography cultures, religion, politics, and heritage among more.

Three curriculum essentials from Bright Ideas Press.

    • North Star Geography
      • The first book authored by Tyler Hogan.
      • Geography is an under-taught subject. (Tyler shares and entertaining true story.)
      • Geography Skills are essentials for kids/teens to learn.
      • How parents can help build a love of geography in their children.
    • WonderMaps
      • In CD and downloadable file
      • Maps can be found via a history timeline
      • Library of state, world and historical maps
      • Ancient Civilization maps
      • Maps can be used to give tests
      • Maps can be annotated you can add information
    • Demystifying Learning Styles
      • Tyler Hogan’s most recent book is Demystifying Learning Styles.
      • This book covers common myths, different theories about learning styles, explanation of motivation and modalities.

    Everlasting Love Feb 08, 2019

Love | Love that is everlasting is something we all crave. In family life, we sometimes miss the forest because the trees get in the way. In this podcast, we cover ways to have a family that is filled with grace and love! #podcast #homeschoolpodcastEverlasting Love ~ Episode 327

Love that is everlasting is something we all crave. In family life, we sometimes miss the forest because the trees get in the way. In this podcast, we cover ways to have a family that is filled with grace and love!

Thanks to our sponsor The Christian Standard Bible! Check out more on CSBible.com ~ we so appreciate our sponsors.

I believe all moms hope and pray that their children understand how much we love them. So much of our day when they are little is making sure they stay alive, especially when they are mobile. We cover electrical outlets, put up barriers for stairs and rails on beds. We put locks on cabinets and decide we are not using toxic chemicals because we want our children protected. Whether you are the lovey-dovey-gushy mom or one who says I love you by being strict, it all boils down to the same thing. We want our kids to understand they are loved.

As an aside, it is sometimes difficult as busy parents who have so many things going on at the same time that we must separate the discipline from anger. If we are upset, leave the “penalty” until later. Sometimes we take our children’s love for granted but that love can be damaged by discipline that they feel is unjust. I ask my children what they did wrong (if they don’t know I tell them and ask again) and when we are finished I tell them I love them.

God’s love is unconditional. He loves us not matter what we do, but he hates the sin and loves the sinner. A difficult concept to explain to children. 1 John 4:8 – The one who does not love does not know God, for God is love.

I’ve told my now grown up kids that they will always be my babies. My home has displays of pictures instead of art. In my eyes, it is priceless art, more valuable than anything. How do we take that love for our children and translate it to everlasting love that will last their lifetime? I believe this only happens with faith. Only God can give me the grace I need each and every day. Yes, there are things you can do to encourage love within your family, but often it is the grace from above that sustains us.

    Important points to remember:

    1. Love is shown without words.
    2. Love is a sacrifice. Enough said.
    3. Love is never equal.
    4. Love is never fair.
    5. Love must be authentic, or it isn’t real.
    6. You can’t fake love
    7. Love takes work.
    8. Love may not be reciprocated.
    9. Love can be heart-breaking.
    10. Love is worth it.

God made us to love and be loved. If we are filled with the love of God that love will spill over to those in our family and friends. My co-author on the Media Angels Creation Science Series, Jill Whitlock was one of those people that often was asked the question, “You are different, why are you so happy?” People wanted what she had. What she had was the love of God. She went from atheist to agnostic to Christian. A super-charged in love with Christ, Christian. When she died in 2007, I have no doubt it was into the loving arms of our Lord. She showed this love her family, to me, her friend and to strangers on the street.

Everlasting love is a reminder that God loves us and we should spend time daily in the Word, in prayer, and in quiet. Model this for your children. Ask God for the grace for those situations that come up in life that we can’t deal with. He is there for us. As I record this in the month of February I’m reminded of the world’s idea of love with candy, flowers, and gifts. Yet, it is still a reminder to all of us to celebrate love this month. In our home, our kids say I’ve deprived them of candy, so these few times they get treats they are treasured.

Remember to talk to your children.

    1. Remind them you love them.
    2. Remind them it is out of love (I care for you) that your reprimand or punish.
    3. Say, “I love you,” when you see your child or when they go to bed at night. I end phone calls with, “I love you.”
    4. Write love notes and encourage them to write notes to each other and to you.
    5. Keep a stack of red construction paper hearts with Scripture verses, I’ve included a sheet for you to print out here in the show notes.

My husband tells our children, home is where you should feel safe. Where you should come to us with your problems or concerns. Where you know we love you and we are here for you at all times. Not only in the good times but when you are struggling. Everlasting love. That is the greatest gift we can give our children.

I hope you enjoy these printables. I Love You Hearts – VintageHomeschoolMoms

Top 10 Faith Building Activities | Having fun and learning while teaching the faith, yes! Faith building activities are discussed as well as ways to help your children see the spiritual connection between faith and the Bible.  #podcast #homeschoolpodcastFaith Building Activities Episode 325

Having fun and learning while teaching the faith, yes! Faith building activities are discussed as well as ways to help your children see the spiritual connection between faith and the Bible.

Thanks to our sponsor the Christian Standard Bible – please check them out and sign up for their free information at CSBible.com – our sponsors are so important to our network and help us to pay the bills. Praise God for them, and we are blessed to have such a wonderful sponsor.

So, we all want to help our children grow in the Lord, in fact, the Scriptures tell us this Proverbs 22:6 Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it. And of course Deuteronomy 6:5-9 Douay-Rheims 1899 American Edition (DRA)

Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with thy whole heart, and with thy whole soul, and with thy whole strength. And these words which I command thee this day shall be in thy heart: And thou shalt tell them to thy children, and thou shalt meditate upon them sitting in thy house, and walking on thy journey, sleeping and rising. And thou shalt bind them as a sign on thy hand, and they shall be and shall move between thy eyes. And thou shalt write them in the entry, and on the doors of thy house.

There are so many more Scriptures as well! However, the most amazing thing I’ve learned and I am sure you’ve experienced this is that our kids pick up our worse habits! And, I’m sure it is because it is the ones that are modeled the most – yes, I’m talking to myself here as well. But the good news is that if we model great behavior, praying reading our Bible, doing a Bible Study the kids will also pick up our habits.

First, stop and pray. Ask the Lord how best to teach your children. Ask the Lord to help you to find those teachable moments that bring home the love and compassion the Lord has for each one of us and especially His unconditional love for us!

You know when you look at other religions outside of Catholicism and Christianity you find that the gods that these faiths worship require different things. Some require obedience and submission, others require worship or ritualistic sacrifice. Our God only requires our obedience and love and He returns His love to us.

Christianity is the truth. It is the real thing. It is not a falsehood. And, with that comes an amazing responsibility to teach our children and share the good news.

Here are my top 10 favorite Faith Building Activities:

    1. Attending Church
    2. Praying as a family – before meals, in the evening.
    3. Daily praise reports – what are we thankful for each day. We do this every evening after our evening prayers or devotionals
    4. Reading the Bible – and add a journal for older kids, be sure to check out this podcast on Teaching the Bible
    5. Listening to good Christian audios: Such as Christian music or teaching audios like Adventures in Odyssey
    6. Watching good Christian films for example on sites like PureFlix.
    7. Story Starters: make a list of questions such as: What would Jesus do? Give them different scenarios such as when mom asks you to pick up your clothes, or help with the dishes, or do chores in general?
    8. Games that teach Christian concepts – https://childrensministry.com/10-active-indoor-sunday-school-games/ One we use to play as kids focused on the need to trust. What you would do is have someone stand in front of an adult, and tell the kid to fall back. Most of the times kids just can’t let go. The idea is that God is there all the time for us and we need to let go to feel his arms around us, His embrace. Another fun game that was in the handout link on the show notes is giving two different kids a set of combination locks. One is given the combination and the other isn’t. One will struggle and the other will open the lock easily. The point here is to show that when we try to do things on our own, without listening to God we struggle. But if we listen to God, follow His instructions things will go so much easier.
    9. Acts of service. Helping at a food kitchen, collecting clothes and gently used toys to donate, visit the elderly at nursing homes.
    10. Memorizing Scripture and Prayers.

Friends, remember that the best way to teach about our faith is by demonstrating your love of God to others and setting the example. I pray that this podcast has been helpful and ask that you share the show with a friend, give me a star rating on iTunes or any podcast app where you listen, and please join me next week when I discuss helpful tips for parenting.

Teaching The Bible To Kids Jan 30, 2019
    Show notes

Teaching The Bible To Kids | The Bible is important in a Christian's life, but teaching the Bible to kids is sometimes difficult. #podcast #homeschoolpodcastTeaching The Bible To Kids Episode 324

The Bible is important in a Christian’s life, but teaching the Bible to kids is sometimes difficult. In this episode, we cover some suggestions on getting the most out of your study and engage your children.

Thanks to our sponsor CSBible.com (The Christian Standard Bible) and easy to understand translation. Visit their website to learn more. (Hint: this is a great Bible to use when teaching the Bible to kids.)

My fondest memories with my grandmother revolve around the Bible. I use to sit on her feet as she wound yarn (I held the big spool) and she recounted the stories about Adam and Eve, Cane and Abel, The Fall, Noah, and the Ark, Abraham, Issac and Jacob, Sampson and Delilah, and King David. Then onto the New Testament and the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. Even before I could read I had all of these beloved stories that I thought about often.

I followed in my grandmother’s footsteps and told my little ones stories from the Bible. The children loved to listen to stories and it was with a glad heart that I was planting seeds for my children and generations to come. I would ask my children to tell me a favorite part or they would take turns sharing a favorite story.

    Train Up Your Children

Ephesians 6:4: “Fathers, don’t stir up anger in your children, but bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.” (CSB)

To teach the Bible you have to know about the Bible yourself. So, friends, delve into the Scriptures! You will be blessed. Pray beforehand and ask the Lord to touch your heart as you read through. There are many different Bibles. Read a few to see what works for you and then purchase a Bible if you don’t have one already.

Deuteronomy 11:19 “Teach them to your children, talking about them when you sit in your house and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.”

    Important points:

    1. The Bible is the truth. The Bible is the infallible, inerrant word of God.
    2. The Bible is for today. While this is HIS-Story, it is relevant to our lives now.
    3. God is love. His love is shown within the pages of the Bible.

We must give kids a foundation. Many like to ask the kids what they think, but little ones don’t have well-formed opinions without having a good basis to make them – asking is redundant in my opinion.

We want the children to know about God, His love and His Son Jesus as well as the Holy Spirit. That is the greatest story ever told and The Bible is still the number one bestseller. We can help our children by telling them what the passage teaches about God, for them personally and why we need Jesus, a Savior. Once they understand these major truths you can move on to asking them questions.

As an aside here, while a children’s Bible is nice and helps when the children are very little it is often good to read from a standard Bible.

    1. Ask questions about what happened to be sure they understand the main points of the passage. Just the facts, what happened?
    2. Ask what we can learn from this passage?

Discussion on life applications may take time. As your child gets older, again you can explain how a specific passage impacts their life and then, later ask the child again. I homeschooled for many years and I have to tell you that at some points I found I was repeating things I had previously told my other children, yet this method works extremely well. It is definitely tried and true.

Don’t just ask the kids what they think about a particular passage because it doesn’t get to the crux of the meaning behind it. For example, if you ask kids what they think about Adam and Eve they will blame them for the fact that we are not in the Garden of Eden, because of “their” mistake. It is easier to blame others and not take any blame for “mistakes” we make, right? Instead, explain that Adam and Eve had the gift of “free will” and because of this, God allowed them the choice to do what was right or wrong. We too have this same freedom in our life and it is to be cherished.

Memorization of passages is a standard in many families. Rather than huge blocks of Scripture, I like the children to memorize the verses are that are helpful. For example the Lord’s Prayer. Many other key scriptures are worth memorizing.

Meditation is another important way to teach the Bible. Teach children to close their eyes and listen after you read a particular Scripture. Little ones have a hard time keeping their eyes closed so you can ask them to put their heads on their arms on a table.

    Preface mediation with this:

    1. Tell the children you are going to read a passage and you want them to close their eyes to listen.
    2. Explain to the children that God’s voice is a “still small voice” 1 Kings 19:11-13
    3. Ask the children to listen after you read and tell them you will let them know when they can raise up their heads or open their eyes.
    4. Ask them to listen for that still small voice – to ask the Lord to come deeper into their hearts.
    5. Remind them that we are to be respectful of the Scriptures and remain quiet.

Mediation is a learned skill and one that is such a blessing especially in the life of a mature Christian. Demonstrate to the children how to do it – and even your older teens.

The Word of God is a blessing and I pray that you will teach your children to cherish the freedoms we have in this country to worship openly, to worship as we chose and to honor our Lord and Savior.

    Show Notes: Lifeschooling

What is the definition of lifeschooling? Lifeschooling is the individualized process of discovering your child’s God-given gifts and talents, primarily through real-life experiences that happen within the context of your family’s unique situations and missions. Proverbs 16:9 — A man plan his ways and the Lord directs his path.

    Lifeschooling Early Years

The early years of homeschooling are more natural and the children learned with the right opportunities that are presented by their parents. It sounds like a more relaxed approach. Is it similar to unschooling? Unschooling is child lead where lifeschooling is parent lead. It is good to have plans and a schedule, “man plans his ways,” but the Lord directs his path. If something comes up – you can help the neighbor or life events that happen in every day. Look at everyday life and see where the opportunities come from — there is still education and academics. Do you use a specific curriculum for lifeschooling? Every family has a different approach. Daniele does not use a curriculum yet prays about what she wants to teach. Daniele’s daughter wrote a book that took her several years and research to complete. No Return was the name of the novel she wrote. How do you think parents can find their children’s gifts within the parameters of lifeschooling. Lifeschooling brings out their gifts, and part of this is observing and giving them opportunities — places they can go and try something new and looking for specific skills – ask how they enjoyed different activities and go from there. Prayer is pivotal and God has a specific purpose for each of our children. On a practical level, what has lifeschooling looked like in your home? Listen to this episode as Daniele shares details.

    • Luma Learn on Twitter
    • Luma Learn on LinkedIn

The top reason online classes are a benefit.

    1. One line classes are often a way for moms to get a break and “sub out” that class for the year. Homeschoolers are “all in” and our lives are busy. Similar to needing an oxygen mass on a plane in distress, we must take care of ourselves as well. Moms tend to do way too much and it just backfires on us. We don’t always want to admit that we need help, but it is okay to need help. Maybe a mom
    2. We can enjoy other people’s gifts. If we really believe that we are each gifted with certain talents we can share them or enjoy other people’s gifts. On Luma Learn, you will be blessed by the gifted teachers.
    3. Teaching your child accountability. Online classes allow children to learn what another teacher expects, deadlines and assignments. Whether you are in college, ministry, or the workplace you will learn a structure and accountability from others.

It is often said that homeschooling is not for the faint-hearted. Homeschooling with Vision and Purpose is the topic of today’s podcast with a very special guest and new podcaster at the Ultimate Homeschool Radio Network, Lisa Nehring. As homeschoolers often we don’t think about homeschooling with vision and purpose.

    In this episode we discuss:

    1. What is the difference between reactive homeschooling vs. proactive vision
    2. How to create a vision and make it plain – Habakkuk 2:2
    3. Envisioning a bright and successful future – we are called to be obedient – and succeed.
    4. Proactive – visions different for everyone.
    5. Consider your child’s talents. Shore up their weakness.
    6. Create a bridge between present and future – could be and possibilities
    7. Look at your child’s spiritual development, physical emotional development.
    8. Digital dark ages, they were more interactive and engage in humane and kind.
    9. How to communicate well with people.
    10. A unique time in life – our kids grow up in a digital age.

Lisa shared how to develop a vision vs mission. A vision is the big picture dream, about what you want at the end of, for example, homeschooling, life, etc. Use adjectives, verbs, and nouns to create your vision.

The mission consists of the steps that you take to get to your vision. When developing – nouns and adverbs

Goals are small incremental steps to get to your … small, manageable and realistic and timely

Smart goals -Set goals and create a mission for our year – saves us time and money. We can change the specifics we need to get done and a sense of what we need to accomplish.

Blended learning and online learning is the secret weapon of homeschool. True North Academy does this for you!
