The Dynamic Nature of Shelter Medicine Jun 15, 2023
    Show notes

Shelter medicine is an interesting niche in veterinary medicine, one in which veterinary professionals must apply concepts of herd health to dogs and cats, all of which are related to overpopulation of both species. Shelter medicine has evolved over the past several decades and is now taught at many U.S. veterinary schools and has become a rewarding career option for veterinarians and veterinary technicians. The growth in shelter medicine programs and in veterinary professionals choosing shelter medicine as a career is also elevating the quality of veterinary care at animal shelters across the country. In this edition of the VetFolio Voice podcast, Dr. Cassi chats with Sam Sacasa, CVT, about the evolution of shelter medicine and why it is an interesting, important and rewarding niche in veterinary medicine. Don't miss their compelling and thoughtful conversation!

The exotic pet trade is a growing industry, with the AVMA noting that an increasing number of U.S. households own a specialty or exotic pet, such as fish, ferrets, rabbits, hamsters, guinea pigs, gerbils, turtles, snakes, lizards and amphibians. But what do we really know about exotic pets? Does the human-animal bond exist between these animals and their owners? And what’s it like to provide veterinary care for these unique pets? In this VetFolio Voice podcast episode, NAVC Chief Veterinary Officer Dr. Dana Varble — who is an associate veterinarian for Chicago Exotics Animal Hospital — chats with host Dr. Cassi about exotic animal medicine. With humor and compassion, they cover topics such as captivity vs domestication, legal regulations regarding exotic pets, and some of their favorite exotic patients.

Dr. Cassi, VetFolio Voice's host, chats with Dr. Sara Ramos about the right food and plethora of available supplements that are marketed to pet owners grappling with helping their dogs with allergic dermatitis. As a practitioner, it can be difficult to navigate all the supplements and brands on the market and determine which ones to recommend. Dr. Ramos briefly reviews the evidence regarding supplements and identifies the food she personally recommends for canine patients with allergic disease — Derm Complete and Derm Complete Puppy, which were formulated by Hill’s Prescription Diet to incorporate specific nutrients that benefit the allergic patient. Multimodal management is focused on inhibiting the inflammatory response, restoring the skin barrier, and providing nutrients for overall skin and coat health.

Nutrition Is a Team Sport May 04, 2023
    Show notes

Featuring the professionals who created the NAVC’s Pet Therapeutic Nutrition Coach Certification, Dr. Ellen Lowery and VTS Kara Burns, this VetFolio Voice episode provides a thoughtful (and fun!) “team sport” approach to nutrition education in the clinic. They want to inspire the entire veterinary team to bring their “A” game when it comes to educating pet owners about nutrition for the animals they love. As the fifth vital assessment, the nutritional assessment should be completed during each patient visit, which means evaluating nutritional status and making diet recommendations. Clients need and want that information from you, but it can be challenging when they believe myths, misinformation and inaccurate facts. Dr. Lowery and Ms. Burns offer different perspectives that they have integrated into a well-rounded gameplan that you can put into practice easily. It’s game time — listen in as host Dr. Cassi explores this essential topic with two of the profession’s most respected and engaging experts!
