Enterprise Preview: iOS 13, iPadOS, macOS Catalina Aug 22, 2019

Show notes

Wait, no, don't hard quit the podcast! Don't you do it! Yes, it's enterprise. I know. But, just hold on a hot damn second. These new features for iOS 13, iPadOS, and macOS Catalina in enterprise are cool. Mostly because I kinda love what they just might be hinting at for the future of all of Apple's operating systems… and for all of us.

Will There Be an Apple Watch Series 5? Aug 20, 2019

Show notes

Apple Watch Series 5. There's been so little news about it this year, some people have started wondering out loud if there'd even be a new Apple Watch this year. But, well..

Series 4 was such a leap forward, the speculation is going, that Series 5 could take a year off and just kind of coast. You know, maybe price drop it and use that as a way to lower the entry point and put pressure on competitors instead.

And you know, maybe. But… it just doesn't click for me.

How Apple Can Make the iPhone 11 'PRO' Aug 15, 2019

Show notes

Mac Pro. MacBook Pro. iPad Pro. iMac Pro. Powerbeats Pro… iPhone Pro?

There's a rumor going around that Apple might just call one or more of this fall's iPhones… the iPhone Pro. Or maybe the iPhone 11 Pro. It's unclear.

Also unclear: What, beyond just adding the label, Apple could do to make the iPhone really, truly worthy of the name 'Pro'. That is, if the name 'Pro" even means anything any more.

Curious, I asked all of you on Twitter what you thought… and wow did you respond.

Samsung Galaxy Note 10 Features Apple Should STEAL For iPhone 11 Aug 11, 2019

Show notes

The Galaxy Note 10 is here. I spoke all about it with Daniel Bader from Android Central, so be sure to check that video out if you haven't already.

Now, I want to talk about the feature from the Note 10 I'd love to see Apple bring to the iPhone 11… or iPhone 12 if they're already locked and loaded for September.

Is Apple Locking iPhone Batteries to Discourage Repair? Also: Foldable iPads! Aug 11, 2019

Show notes

Yeah, I'm just gonna lean right into Bettridge's Law with this video title. Right on in.

So, the story is this:

A couple of days ago, Justin from TheArtofRepair YouTube channel discovered that, all of a sudden, swapping out the battery on an iPhone resulted in the newish battery health monitoring system turning off and popping up:

"Important battery message: Unable to verify this iPhone has a genuine Apple battery. Health information not available for this battery"

Since then, we've seen headlines like Vice's "Apple Is Locking Batteries to Specific iPhones, a Nightmare for DIY Repair" and, of course, iFixit's "Apple Is Locking iPhone Batteries to Discourage Repair" and just a ton more like them.

Now, I'm going to push back kinda hard on using the term "locking" for any of this. Not because I'm an evil Apple apologist or defender, even though I can feel some of you just itching… itching to start typing that in the comments right now already.

But because I think it's just dumb and let's Apple off the hook far too easily.

Let me explain...

Galaxy Note 10 vs. iPhone 11— From the Android Expert Aug 08, 2019

Show notes

It's Samsung's big Galaxy Note 10 day today and so I've got Daniel Bader, Managing Editor of Android Central, on the line with me to tell us all about it.

Who is the Galaxy Note 10 for? Does it still cater to power users and nerds, even without a headphone jack? How does the camera compare to Huawei? How do the features compare to $500 and under phones? How will the Galaxy Note 10 hold up to the upcoming Apple iPhone 11 and Google Pixel 4? And do you even need to think about 5G now?

Apple's Post-iPhone Future Aug 07, 2019

Show notes

Despite the usual doom and gloom reporting that we got leading up to Apple's Q3 2019 financial results — or stock manipulation depending on your point of view — the company managed to largely beat expectations.

But not escape the doom and gloom. Not entirely.
