#141 - Mauricio Pochettino signs on as USMNT head coach Sep 12, 2024

The United States Men’s National Team have a new head coach! We discuss Mauricio Pochettino’s hire on Episode 141 of the USA Soccercast.

The USMNT are coming off a September window that was not great, but the biggest story occurred just before the match against New Zealand on Tuesday night, when U.S. Soccer confirmed the hire of Mauricio Pochettino. Pochettino is tasked with building the program back up towards the 2026 World Cup and preparing the team to host the world and try to go deep in the tournament. It’s a shortened timetable for him with less than two years to go, but we break down what the Argentine coach brings to the table as he takes on the new project.

We also answer some listener questions about Pochettino’s hire, from how we could play to what kind of formation he could employ to who we could possibly play between now and June 2026. There are a lot of factors that affect the program’s trajectory and he will be responsible for addressing them all. With his first press conference coming tomorrow morning, it will be fans’ initial chance to hear from the man himself on how he plans to get this team back on track.

#140 - Breaking down the USMNT roster Sep 02, 2024

The United States Men’s National Team is back with a new roster and a new interim coach, and we examine the team on Episode 140 of the USA Soccercast.

The USMNT are gathering for matches over the next week against Canada and New Zealand and they’re doing so with an interim coach: Mikey Varas. There’s also a new roster with some players who have been called in to compete for some depth spots. Also, with some players out due to injury or rest, there’s an opportunity for guys to show they should be a part of the main core of the player pool.

We also discuss what the team should be looking to accomplish in this window despite the fact no permanent coach is in place. Competition is one thing, but it’s a chance to reset and really begin to play with the sense of urgency that’s required in every match. The team may have friendlies the next couple of months, but they can still approach those matches like they are World Cup matches.

The time has come. Gregg Berhalter has been fired as the United States Men’s National Team head coach, and we discuss the fallout on Episode 139 of the USA Soccercast.

Gregg Berhalter’s tenure is done, which has given a large portion of the fanbase some happiness this morning. We break down what happened and offer a post mortem on Gregg Berhalter’s time as USMNT head coach. Make no mistake, despite some of the shortcomings that were held against him, he brought this program back from its lowest point and achieved quite a few goals during his time in charge. He also leaves as one of the winningest coaches in USMNT history. So, we take the time to go through some of his accomplishments as well as some of those shortcomings, including crashing out in the group stage of Copa America. In the end, we wish him well as he departs the team.

Now that Berhalter is out, the work begins to find a replacement. Of course, some big names are coveted by the fanbase, but are some of those names realistic? Probably not, but to get to some of the coaches who are, we lay out some criteria that we wish to see in the next coach. The main one: we need a coach who’s available who can come in now and get straight to work by the September international window. Then, we offer some possible candidates. In the end, we all have a lot of work to do before the 2026 World Cup arrives, and once the new coach arrives, it’s time to get going.

We are back with Episode 138, and we’re honored to welcome U.S. Men’s National Team legend and Hall of Famer Clint Dempsey to the show!

The USMNT are out of Copa América, and we talk to Deuce about what happened to the team and what led to the abrupt exit. We get his take on whether Gregg Berhalter needs to be removed as head coach, and his response is simple: whatever happens, it needs to happen now.

Deuce has many comments on what the team needs to do in order to get better, including playing better competition, getting our players in situations where they are on the field consistently for their clubs, and what players he thinks has the same qualities he possessed on the field. The United States Men’s National Team have crashed out of Copa America, and we have to discuss everything on Episode 137.

The USMNT have exited Copa América in the group stage thanks to losses against Panama and Uruguay, and in the aftermath, there are plenty of questions that have to be discused. First, we recap the group stage results, from the win against Bolivia to Tim Weah’s red card and a terrible loss to Panama to the match last night against Uruguay. The results on the field were poor, but we still have to go through them.

After the break, we get into the questions surrounding the USMNT program, and it includes the big one: should Gregg Berhalter remain as head coach of the United States Men’s National Team? We answer that question and break down everything surrounding what changes need to come to move the team forward. It’s not just a straight forward answer and there’s no fall person. Everyone shares some blame, but a change definitely needs to be made as we begin our advancement towards the 2026 World Cup.

The summer of soccer begins this weekend, but the USWNT or USMNT will not be the first team to take the field and embrace the moment. The U.S. Deaf Women’s National Team takes the field at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park against Australia this Saturday as part of a historic doubleheader with the USWNT. We welcome Amy Griffin, USDWNT head coach and 1991 Women’s World Cup champion, to the USA Soccercast on Episode 133.

The Deaf Women’s National Team match on Saturday kicks off at 2:00pm ET and will be televised on TruTV. It’s the first time an Extended National Team has been broadcast on TV in a US Soccer-controlled match, while Volkswagen’s title sponsorship is the first time an ENT match has had a presenting partner. Amy Griffin speaks with us to discuss how the program has been so successful - unbeaten all time in 38 matches and with 3 Deaf World Championships and gold medals at 4 Deaflympics. She also discusses some of the challenges the team faced before they became a part of U.S. Soccer’s Extended National Team program in 2022.

The platform that they will have being on national TV this weekend is a historic one, but it’s also a special one for them. Griffin breaks down some of the nuances of the deaf soccer game and how she had to adapt as a coach, and she even gives fans some tips on how to support the team when they’re playing on the field. The United States and Mexico announced yesterday that they were withdrawing their bid to host the 2027 Women’s World Cup, deciding to instead focus their efforts on the 2031 tournament. On Episode 132, we are joined by Sylvs from the Shea Butter FC Podcast to discuss all the implications and what it could mean for the USWNT program as well as the growth of women’s soccer in this country and beyond!

The USA and Mexico have decided to hold back from potentially hosting in 2027 a little over a couple weeks before the FIFA Congress casts their votes on it at their next meeting. That leaves Brazil and the joint bid of Germany, Belgium, and the Netherlands to duke it out. But, what does it mean for the USWNT and for women’s soccer in the United States and Mexico? Sylvs has tremendous knowledge and perspective on this, so she joins after the break to discuss the implications.

Brazil is rumored to be the favorite now to host in 2027, and that has us excited. Sylvs discusses what it would mean for Brazil to host and why it would be a good thing for women’s soccer worldwide. The USMNT went down to Texas with the Concacaf Nations League trophy under their arms, and they left Texas still holding the trophy. It wasn’t easy, as they needed extra time to defeat Jamaica before another Dos A Cero against Mexico in the final. On Episode 126, we conclude our series of interviews with the candidates for U.S. Soccer Vice President as we have a conversation with Dr. Pete Zopfi.

Dr. Zopfi is the chairman of U.S. Youth Soccer and a member of the U.S. Soccer board of directors. He currently serves on the sports medicine research, education, and advisory committee, and the nominating and governance committee. He’s also been a part of several other committees and task forces while on the U.S. Soccer board.

Through our conversation with Dr. Zopfi, we learn more about his candidacy and why he thinks he is best to serve as the new Vice President alongside President Cindy Parlow Cone and CEO JT Batson. We address topics like youth development, player safety, referee and coaching training, and how to increase fan accessibility and diversity while attempting to keep costs down for the major soccer events that are coming to our shores. We also spend some time discussing the extended national teams, like beach soccer, power soccer, and the deaf national teams, and how to increase their presence here in the United States to gain even more traction. This interview, along with the others, will help fans gain some insight into the governance of U.S. Soccer but also can keep the discussion going over how best to keep soccer growing in this country and to have our teams be the best they can be.

#125 - US Club Soccer CEO Mike Cullina on U.S. Soccer governance Jan 26, 2024

On Episode 125, we continue our interviews on U.S. Soccer governance surrounding the Vice Presidential election with an interview with former candidate Mike Cullina.

Cullina is the CEO of US Club Soccer and serves as the Youth Council representative on the U.S. Soccer Board of Directors. Cullina was a candidate for U.S. Soccer Vice President, but decided back on January 13th to withdraw from the race. Still, he appeared on the show to discuss his reasons for getting involved in the race and his work on the board of directors for U.S. Soccer, addressing many questions on several topics that affect the entire umbrella of American soccer.

The work that U.S. Soccer has to do in order to grow the game in this country is expansive, and Cullina details some of the many steps they need to take to improve one area of the soccer landscape while working with the numerous member associations so that the game continues to improve in the United States. From referee development and player safety to expanding the resources of our extended national teams, Cullina gives a fascinating interview that is sure to leave everyone with a better understanding of how U.S. Soccer both currently operates and where they can improve operations to keep progress moving forward.

U.S. Soccer will elect a new Vice President at its Annual General Meeting, which runs February 8-10 in Dallas. On Episode 124, candidate Nathán Goldberg, former assistant general manager at NJ/NY Gotham FC, joins the show to answer questions on several topics facing U.S. Soccer.

The governance of the federation is something fans should be well informed about, and through our interview with Goldberg, we learn about why he wants to join the Board of Directors as the Vice President and what he hopes to accomplish in the role. We address topics like youth development, player safety, increased fan accessibility, increased diversity and inclusion, how to increase our coaching and referee pool, as well as how to bring each of the member associations together and working with the professional soccer leagues. #123 - January Camp recap, Sam Mewis retires Jan 23, 2024

We’re back with Episode 123 as we catch up on some topics from the past week!

The USMNT opened 2024 with a loss to Slovenia last weekend, but it was a chance for fans to see the future as several players on the roster could be at the Olympics this summer. We quickly discuss the players and how January Camp can serve as a potential springboard to the full national team for players.

For the USWNT, SheBelieves Cup will take place in April now, and it will be a mini tournament. Brazil, Canada, and Japan will once again join the USWNT as semifinal matches will take place in Atlanta and Columbus will host the final and 3rd place matches. In another loaded year for the USWNT, SheBelieves Cup once again brings some quality competition.

After the break, Sam Mewis announced her retirement last week as her knee injury proved to be too much to return to the field. We pay tribute to one of the most dynamic and dominant midfielders America has ever produced. We’ll really miss her on the field.

#122 - MLS wants to abandon the U.S. Open Cup Dec 28, 2023

We close out 2023 by reviewing some of the rules changes and new tournament formats on Episode 122.

Major League Soccer has brought about some rules changes for the 2024 season, and some of them are very intriguing and welcomed. However, the worst change they attempted was to withdraw its first teams from the U.S. Open Cup. U.S. Soccer said nope, and now we have a stalemate. But, we discuss how severely stupid it was for the league to try and withdraw from America’s longest running tournament.

After the break, FIFA has set up the slots for each confederation for the 2025 Club World Cup. That includes 1 slot for the host country, the United States. Could that be the MLS Cup champion, or will they just figure out a way to get Lionel Messi and Inter Miami in? There’s also a new tournament to replace the normal Club World Cup, but the new tournament is set up to fully benefit the UEFA Champions League winner. We discuss that tournament as well.

Finally, the 2026 World Cup could have a match schedule very soon. Where could the USMNT play, and where could all the matches be played? We quickly discuss the U.S. venues and how the group stage could set up for the USMNT.

#121 - Breaking down the Draws Dec 27, 2023

We’re starting to close out 2023, and we begin by recapping the Copa América Draw and the W Gold Cup Draw on Episode 121.

The USMNT will host the 2024 Copa América, and we know now where they will play and whom. The USMNT drew Uruguay, Panama, and Bolivia in Group C and will play their group stage matches in Arlington, Texas; Atlanta; and Kansas City. We go through the draw to discuss what the path looks like for the United States and who they could face should they advance to the knockout stage.

#119 - The USWNT wins by playing the kids Nov 01, 2023

The USA Soccercast recaps the USWNT’s October window on Episode 119. The October window was a bit of a struggle for the USWNT, as they played Colombia in two friendlies last weekend. The first match was a scoreless stalemate, with the USWNT looking like they had not attempted to change anything from what we had seen this year leading into the Women’s World Cup.

In the second friendly, the first half repeated some of those failed tactics and personnel decisions. However, with the substitution of a couple of the new young players at halftime, the dynamic changed. We discuss how Mia Fishel and Jaedyn Shaw should prompt a hard review of the program and should renew the desire by many to integrate the youth into the fabric of this team to make it theirs, especially with the W Gold Cup and the Olympics approaching in 2024.

The United States Men’s National Team has entered the September international window, and we take a look at the roster and the upcoming matches on Episode 114 of the USA Soccercast.

The USMNT are back in action against two new opponents in Uzbekistan and Oman. It marks the return of head coach Gregg Berhalter to the sidelines, and he has a new 24-man roster that consists of some of the veterans along with a few new faces. After Berhalter indicated in a Vanity Fair article that he still has not spoken with Gio to clear the air and has consulted mediators in an attempt to be “deliberate and strategic” with his approach. That reconciliation process between Berhalter and Reyna has several moving parts, and it’s way more complex than Berhalter just picking up the phone and calling him. We discuss some of the factors that’s contributing to the complexity of this reconciliation process.

#103 - Messi to MLS? It ain’t happening Apr 06, 2023

The USA Soccercast is back with Episode 103, and we’re discussing a topic that has been on the minds of many over the past few weeks and months: will Lionel Messi actually come to Major League Soccer?

I’m here to throw cold water on the idea that Messi will end up at Inter Miami, and there are several reasons why, but many of them center around money. Vast amounts of money, enough to make Scrooge McDuck say “that’s a lot of money!” MLS has been doing its best to keep the name of the league attached to Messi as he sorts out his future plans, but in the end, the type of money being offered to Messi by Saudi club Al Hilal might be too much to turn down. We discuss the several scenarios and end with the conclusion that the arguable GOAT coming to America just doesn’t feel like it’s truly in the cards.

#101 - Welcome to the USA Soccercast! Mar 31, 2023

As many of you know, back in late January, the Stars & Stripes FC Podcast was among many entities that were a part of the layoffs by SB Nation and Vox Media. We address the future of the show on Episode 101, which serves as both an introduction and a re-introduction.

The date of the podcast’s separation from the SB Nation Podcast Network had originally been the end of February, but that date was pushed back to today. And today’s as good a time as any to announce that we’re changing the name of the show: the USA Soccercast!

The USA Soccercast will continue to bring you analysis on the USMNT, USWNT, and the players that comprise those teams. However, with the move to the new name, the analysis will extend to Major League Soccer, the NWSL, USL Championship and League One, and anything else that could impact soccer in America. From the Women’s World Cup to Leagues Cup, we’ll discuss it all, and hopefully have some special guests along the way.

#100 - Breaking down the Concacaf Nations League changes Feb 28, 2023

The Concacaf Nations League is undergoing some format changes starting in September, and on a milestone 100th episode of the SSFC Podcast, we dive into what those changes are and what it means for the USMNT. The format changes to the Nations League sees League A expand to 16 teams starting in September. They are also adding a quarterfinal leg that is a two-legged, home-and-away format. However, this format change sees the top 4 teams in Concacaf, including the USMNT, skipping the group stage and entering at the quarterfinal stage. This means they’ll only need to play 2 games potentially to qualify for the Nations League Finals as well as the 2024 Copa América. After the break, we discuss the fact that while it’s better for the USMNT from a preparation standpoint for the 2026 World Cup, it really stinks that we don’t get to participate in the group stage anymore of truly the greatest tournament on the planet. Traveling to islands to play is something that most big teams in the rest of the world don’t get to do, and it’s fun too. The level playing field that was supposed to define the Concacaf Nations League appears to be gone, at least for the next two editions of the tournament. We end with some thanks to everyone who’s ever listened to the show, all our guests, and some people who provided some extra help or encouragement along the way. #99 - USWNT make SheBelieves statement Feb 24, 2023

The United States Women’s National Team made a statement over the February international window with three wins to capture their 6th SheBelieves Cup title. We discuss the ramifications on Episode 99 of the SSFC Podcast. The USWNT may have shown the world that despite some of their struggles and all of the injuries, they’re still the favorites to win this summer’s Women’s World Cup when they put it all together. Mallory Swanson is carrying the scoring load so far in 2023, but the team also answered each of the tests that Canada, Japan, and Brazil presented them. However, with the announcement that the USWNT will play Ireland in two home matches in April, it represents the last official window for players to show that they should be one of the 23 that make the trip to New Zealand and Australia this summer. With the NWSL starting at the end of March, the race is on to put enough out there that these players get one of those camp calls and show Vlatko that they can contribute to a potential 3-peat. We also discuss some of the questions surrounding the midfield and the forwards and what can be done to keep the creative players on the field. #97 - SheBelieves serves as a major USWNT test Feb 16, 2023

The United States Women’s National Team have a major test over the next week as they take on Canada, Japan, and Brazil in the 2023 SheBelieves Cup. We preview this tournament on Episode 97 of the SSFC Podcast. The 23 players who will compete in the tournament for the USWNT are basically the same set of players we’ve seen over the past few months. With Rose Lavelle out for the first match due to a knock she picked up in training this week, the midfield will have even more questions as they presumably attempt to insert Taylor Kornieck at the 6 to fill the void created by the absence of Julie Ertz and Sam Mewis. We also take a deeper look at that midfield, focusing on how the team played last month and where the goal contributions were created from the midfield players in 2022. Spoiler: the player who logged far and away the most caps and minutes had the fewest goal contributions of the main midfielders. Over the course of Black History Month every year, we’ve done our best to write stories of those players and moments that deserved to be told to a wider audience. Sometimes, it’s good to look back and relive some of those stories, and we do that on Episode 96 of the SSFC Podcast. #95 - Wrapping January Camp for Leeds United States Jan 31, 2023

January Camp has wrapped for the United States Men’s National Team, and we discuss what fans should take from the camp on Episode 95 of the SSFC Podcast. The USMNT had friendlies last week against Serbia (2-1 loss) and Colombia (0-0 draw), but while the results on the field weren’t great, it was a chance for some players in their first national team camp to have an opportunity to show that they can be a part of the player pool moving forward. We use that opportunity to push back on Herculez Gomez’s belief that January Camp has jumped the shark and should be repurposed as a U-23 camp. Many players have stressed the importance of the camp, and we discuss why. #94 - Copa America arrives, Earnie Stewart departs Jan 27, 2023

Big news has dropped over the past couple days, and we discuss it on Episode 94 of the SSFC Podcast. The announcement today that the 2024 Copa América will be hosted in the United States is part of a major collaboration between Concacaf and CONMEBOL that includes joint participation in the 2024 Copa América, 2024 Concacaf W Gold Cup, and a newly created “final four” style club competition. We discuss the competitions and what it means for both confederations. After the break, U.S. Soccer is set to lose Earnie Stewart as the federation’s sporting director will depart next month. USMNT general manager Brian McBride is also out at the end of this month, and Anthony Hudson is the interim USMNT head coach for the foreseeable future. Now that we have a loaded schedule of competitive matches, the pressure is on the federation to be efficient in hiring a new sporting director and head coach, because fans are starting to have the same feeling that they had in 2018. #93 - A word on the Pod’s future Jan 21, 2023

The SSFC Podcast received some grim news today, as did dozens of people in the various SB Nation communities. This morning, I received an email from SB Nation’s higher ups that let us know that the company, along with its parent company Vox Media, would be undergoing some layoffs as well as other cuts. Unfortunately, those cuts included the end of support for the Stars & Stripes FC Podcast as of February 28th. There were several SB Nation team sites that were also told that their support and funding would end, including many sites focusing on MLS teams. Stars & Stripes FC as a website has not been affected by today’s cuts and our community will remain a part of SB Nation as a fully supported website. This site will continue to bring you all the content on our USMNT and USWNT, and we hope you continue to bring positive contributions to our comments section as well as our Fan Posts. So, today’s a bittersweet day as many of our sister blogs will not continue after the end of February. The future of this podcast is uncertain, but as we figure it out, we will keep you all in the know. The SSFC Podcast is not saying goodbye just yet. #91 - Berhalter vs. Reyna: The breakdown Jan 09, 2023

What a week! The Gregg Berhalter-Reyna family scandal rocked the U.S. Soccer world, and we have to recap it on Episode 91 of the SSFC Podcast. The events of last week involving USMNT head coach Gregg Berhalter being put under investigation for a 1991 domestic violence incident and then finding out it was Danielle and Claudio Reyna - Gio’s parents and ex-national team players - that gave U.S. Soccer the information took the internet by storm. It was important to recap the entire timeline, starting from before the 2022 World Cup, to understand the full course of events. What we know now is interwoven with what we knew at the time to paint the full picture. After that, we have to get into the culpability of all parties, from Berhalter to the Reyna family to people at U.S. Soccer who were talking with the Reynas about Gio’s role on the team. There’s a lot of people who could have done things differently where this whole saga could have been avoided, and there’s one person - Rosalind Berhalter - who absolutely didn’t deserve to be thrust into the middle of this. After the break, we discuss what all of this means for the USMNT head coaching search. With Zinedine Zidane reportedly contacted by U.S. Soccer to gauge his interest in speaking about the job, it looks like U.S. Soccer could be aiming high and casting a very wide net. However, this scandal will not only affect how U.S. Soccer has to approach this hiring process, but also how Gio Reyna especially will be handled moving forward. Welcome to 2023! The United States national soccer teams have another big year ahead of them, but we first stop to look back on the year that was on Episode 90 of the SSFC Podcast. The USMNT, USWNT, and the youth national teams had a lot of successes and some down moments in 2022. We start by quickly recapping what each team accomplished last year. The USMNT qualified for and competed in the 2022 World Cup, the USWNT won the Concacaf W Championship and qualified for the 2023 Women’s World Cup as well as the 2024 Olympics, and the USMNT U-20s qualified the United States for the 2024 Olympics in men’s soccer for the first time since 2008. There were obviously some down moments, and we discuss those as well. After the break, we look forward to what 2023 has in store for us. It’s a Women’s World Cup year, and that’s the biggest tournament on the schedule for U.S. Soccer. For the USMNT, Nations League and the Gold Cup are on the horizon, but the biggest question is who the coach will be moving forward. #89 - Gwendolyn Oxenham discusses Pride of A Nation Dec 15, 2022

The United States Women’s National Team have been around since the mid-1980s, and through their 4 decades of history, there have been some incredible players, moments, and stories. On Episode 89 of the SSFC Podcast, we speak with Gwendolyn Oxenham, who has taken on the incredible task of compiling these stories and moments into a new book that just recently hit book stores.

The book is called Pride of a Nation: A Celebration of the US Women’s National Soccer Team, and it is a collection of essays by Oxenham that is combined with over 250 full page photographs that chronicle the history of the USWNT. From the team’s early beginnings and the story of how the “OOSA OOSA OOSA AH” chant came to be a rallying cry for the program, all the way to the current team and its continual efforts to bring social change to the game for future generations, it’s a terrific interview with Gwendolyn Oxenham as she speaks on some of the research she underwent to create the book and some of her favorite moments.

Oxenham is no stranger to the soccer field or bringing the stories of soccer to the people. She has been involved in writing books and producing films and podcasts on soccer for over a decade. Her most acclaimed effort on the film side was producing and starring in the 2010 documentary Pelada, which won several awards. She also wrote and directed the 2015 sports documentary An Equal Playing Field, and was a consulting producer for the 2018 series Finding Football. On the written side, she’s already written 2 books: Finding the Game: Three Years, Twenty-five Countries and the Search for Pickup Soccer and Under the Lights and in the Dark: Untold Stories of Women’s Soccer.

#88 - Remembering Grant Wahl Dec 14, 2022

How do you properly pay tribute to a fallen legend? We pay tribute to Grant Wahl on the latest episode of the SSFC Podcast. Grant Wahl, the incredible soccer journalist and author, passed away early Saturday morning at the age of 49 after collapsing while covering the Argentina-Netherlands match at Lusail Stadium. The news of his death was a complete gut punch for the soccer community. Dr. Céline Gounder, Grant’s wife for 21 years, posted a statement to Grant’s Substack this morning that Grant passed due to “he rupture of a slowly growing, undetected ascending aortic aneurysm with hemopericardium.” While it may give some answers, it probably doesn’t bring comfort to Céline, Grant’s brother Eric, Grant’s brother-in-law, and the scores of colleagues and close friends that knew him well. Grant was such a genuine person, as evidenced by the number of people who have paid tribute to him from all around the country. And, we go through some of the personal interactions that we had with Grant and what made him so great and willing to help out others in this space or to just vibe out on the game we love so much. #87 - 1 cycle coaches and Copa Américas Dec 09, 2022

The United States Men’s National Team could be retaining its coach and hosting South America’s continental tournament, and we discuss all that on Episode 87 of the SSFC Podcast. USMNT head coach Gregg Berhalter has reportedly begun preliminary talks with U.S. Soccer over a contract extension, and we discuss that history provides us evidence that a coach should not last beyond one World Cup cycle. No matter what you think of his performance in Qatar, the evidence is there that, at least for the USMNT, 2 cycle coaches just don’t pan out. After the break, we get into the rumor that not only will the USMNT be in the 2024 Copa América, they will also host the tournament. We opine that getting into Copa América is going to be a great thing for the team to test itself against some of the strongest teams in the world. However, they should be focused on playing South America’s tournament in South America, not asking the continent to move their tournament here. #86 - USMNT’s World Cup run ends in Round of 16 Dec 05, 2022

The United States Men’s National Team’s run at the 2022 FIFA World Cup is over. A 3-1 loss to the Netherlands ends their tournament, and we recap everything on Episode 86 of the SSFC Podcast. The USMNT started out with some confidence, but the Oranje had their number all night on the counterattack, with incredible efficiency on the offensive end. The USMNT just couldn’t match that, and even with some second half subs and a Haji Wright goal to give them some hope, it wasn’t enough as Denzel Dumfries, Memphis Depay, Daley Blind, and the rest of the Dutch squad were too much for the young American team. After the break, the next World Cup cycle is around the corner, and it’s an important one for the USMNT. With them co-hosting the 2026 World Cup, the time is now for U.S. Soccer to start preparing the nation to support the team and to help the team get ready for the rigors of high expectations. We look at what tournaments await the USMNT in the next cycle, and a big tournament that the team needs to try and enter. In the end, the idea should be for U.S. Soccer to start packing football stadiums full of fans to get them excited about this team and gain some momentum as we head towards 2026. #85 - Let’s squeeze the Oranje Dec 02, 2022

The United States Men’s National Team is set to take on the Netherlands tomorrow in the World Cup Round of 16, and we preview everything on Episode 85 of the SSFC Podcast. In this episode, we analyze what to watch for tomorrow against the Dutch and we examine the World Cup from the fan experience perspective. The Round of 16 is set, so we go over the bracket quickly to see what the road to the World Cup trophy is for the teams remaining. The USMNT have some injury questions answered, namely the health of winger Christian Pulisic. Josh Sargent’s injury is more of a question mark, and he’s likely doubtful for tomorrow. We discuss from the USMNT’s perspective what they need to do in order to get a victory and advance to the quarterfinals for the first time since 2002. That includes being assertive in creating the attack, keeping the Dutch forwards in front of them, and embracing the moment of being in the knockout stage, where anything can happen. After the break, we get into the discussion of what it was like being at the World Cup. From a fan perspective, there were some good things about being at the World Cup, some unique moments that fans could take advantage of while they were there. There have obviously been some incredible matches during the World Cup, and fans were able to experience many of them. #84 - USMNT to the Round of 16! Dec 01, 2022

The United States Men’s National Team are in the Round of 16, and we recap the group stage of the 2022 FIFA World Cup on Episode 84 of the SSFC Podcast. The USMNT entered the World Cup with many questions, but they have played inspired soccer on their way to 2 draws and a win during the group stage. We recap the team’s performances against Wales, England, and Iran that helped propel them to the knockout stage. We also discuss some key players who have had standout performances for the USMNT during those matches. After the break, we discuss the rest of the World Cup field, as half of the Round of 16 is complete. The USMNT is currently carrying Concacaf on its back, with Mexico and Canada already eliminated and Costa Rica needing a win against Germany to move to the knockout stage. We discuss some of the other teams that have made it to the knockout stage, including a team that makes it out of the group for only the second time in their history. We first begin with a broad overview of the groups, breaking down who the favorites are to win the whole thing and some other contenders that could sneak their way to the trophy. An article earlier this week by Steven Goff of the Washington Post had some incredible nuggets of information about the United States Men’s National Team, and we discuss some of that info on Episode 79! The USMNT only have a double international window in June and a September window before the 2022 World Cup, and Goff gives us some information from Gregg Berhalter about how those windows could shape up. We begin with the June double window, which sees the USMNT have 4 matches: 2 friendlies and 2 Concacaf Nations League group stage matches. Berhalter gives a glimpse of who we could see included on the roster for those matches, as well as who may miss the cut either due to injury or other reasons. We then move to the September window, in which we learn that Spain and Germany are the potential places where we could play matches against teams from Asia. Who could those teams be? What stadiums are under consideration? Some research is done to give some educated guesses. After the break, the USMNT and USWNT will have new jerseys this fall, and while it was discussed initially on Episode 67, we once again discuss how plain they look. The USMNT are in the World Cup, and we recap the final World Cup qualifying window on Episode 77 of the SSFC Podcast! There’s a lot of ground to cover on this episode. The USMNT secure their World Cup spot, there was a World Cup draw, a Concacaf Nations League draw, and we react to all of it, beginning with the recap of the last international window for the USMNT. We go through the draw at Azteca, the win over Panama, and the loss to Costa Rica, probably the best loss in USMNT history. That loss was enough to give the USMNT 3rd place in the Octagonal and a spot in the World Cup. The World Cup draw was just a few days later, and Donald was in the building in Doha to watch it all go down. The United States Men’s National Team have a very important window coming up next week, and we discuss the newest roster on Episode 76 of the SSFC Podcast. The USMNT have the last World Cup qualifying window approaching, with an away match at Estadio Azteca against Mexico next Thursday, a home match against Panama on March 27th, and another road qualifier against Costa Rica on March 30th. It’s a new year, and the SSFC Podcast is back to kick off January with Episode 69! We get into the transfer window, the USMNT’s preliminary training camp in Phoenix, and the announcement of SheBelieves Cup for the USWNT. The January transfer window is open and it has already been busy for Americans. We’ve seen Daryl Dike move to West Bromwich Albion and James Sands go to Rangers FC on loan. But, the biggest transfer so far has been Ricardo Pepi moving to FC Augsberg for a MLS record transfer fee. We discuss those moves and what it means for those players. #62 - MNT World Cup qualifying roster released Sep 29, 2021

The USMNT roster is here for World Cup qualifying, and it’s time to react to it on Episode 62. The roster was released this morning, and we go through it to highlight who Gregg Berhalter called in and who was not included. There were several players who were included on this roster that did not make it in the September window: Paul Arriola, Tim Weah, Gyasi Zardes, Luca de la Torre, Matthew Hoppe, Shaq Moore, Yunus Musah, Chris Richards, and Gianluca Busio. While Gio Reyna and Christian Pulisic were not included due to injury, Jordan Pefok, Josh Sargent, Ethan Horvath, and Konrad de la Fuente were also left off the roster. There are also others who were not on either roster that fans may think should have been brought into camp. We discuss it all briefly on this episode. We close out this episode with a personal tribute to Martin Huschka, an inspirational young boy in the American soccer family who passed away late last week due to complications from a neurodegenerative disorder that was so rare, there have been only 14 cases worldwide. I tell the story of Martin’s journey, what he meant to me and why he is the strongest boy that I’ve ever met. Martin is going to be missed by so many, but the joy that he shared is something that will remain in the hearts of all who were blessed to meet him or be inspired through his story. The first three matches of World Cup qualifying are in the books for the United States Men’s National Team, and we recap it all on Episode 60 of the SSFC Podcast! The USMNT are currently in 2nd place in the Octagonal standings after a draw at El Salvador, a home draw against Canada, and a comeback win on the road at Honduras. I was in the building for all 3 matches, and we break down all the ups and downs from the window. First, I give my take on what it was like to be in the stands for all 3 matches and how we played from that vantage point. Of course, there are topics that we dive into while discussing those matches, like the amazing reception we received from fans in San Salvador, Weston McKennie being removed from the team for violating team protocols, and even pushing back on disrespectful rhetoric surrounding the match in Honduras. #59 - World Cup qualifying begins! Sep 01, 2021

The Octagon is here! On Episode 59, we dive into the start of World Cup qualifying for the United States Men’s National Team, and we’re excited about the week to come! First, we analyze the roster and where there could be some rotation for the USMNT. We have a legit goalkeeper competition, and the question will be who gets the start on Thursday against El Salvador, Sunday against Canada, and next Wednesday against Honduras. We also have a couple of guys on this roster that were not on the Nations League roster or the Gold Cup roster, Ricardo Pepi and Konrad de la Fuente. We’re excited about them as well. Finally, while Tim Weah had to withdraw from the roster due to an injury he suffered with Lille, Christian Pulisic has been cleared from his positive Covid-19 diagnosis and is in camp. #58 - Concacaf introduces W Championship, W Gold Cup Aug 19, 2021

Concacaf has launched a couple new women’s competitions, and we take a look at how they are set up on Episode 58. The USWNT will embark on World Cup qualifying next summer, as they compete in the Concacaf W Championship. That tournament will also serve as qualifying for the 2024 Summer Olympics and will also give one team an automatic spot in the other new tournament, the W Gold Cup. The USWNT’s path to the 2023 World Cup hasn’t changed much, but with the expanded World Cup field, it has become slightly easier. We examine how it has changed for them. In any case, next summer has become super important for the USWNT, as they will seek to qualify for the two major tournaments on the FIFA women’s calendar in one shot: the 2023 World Cup and the 2024 Olympics. We’re back with Episode 57, and this is a funny one. We are joined this week by Alexis Guerreros and Christian Polanco. These two comedians form the dynamic duo The Cooligans, and they have created their own lane that mixes soccer news with stand up comedy. They have a TV show that airs Thursday nights on Fubo Sports Network, they have a podcast, and have been able to mix the funny with the soccer in a way that no one else on this side of the pond dares try. #53 - USMNT are Nations League champions! Jun 11, 2021

It’s been a wild window, but we are back with Episode 53 of the SSFC Podcast! We recap the USMNT window that just finished, which was capped by a win over Mexico to win the Concacaf Nations League. The USMNT lost on the road to Switzerland 2-1, but they came back to win 1-0 against Honduras, 3-2 after extra time against Mexico, and 4-0 in a friendly against Costa Rica. We focus mainly on the Nations League matches and just everything that we saw during those two matches. It was as Concacaf-y of a tournament as Concacaf has ever had. The USMNT has a 27-player roster for their upcoming friendly against Switzerland on May 30th. Gregg Berhalter just released the roster this morning and we do a quick reaction to some of the names on this list. The 2021 Gold Cup schedule has finally arrived...took Concacaf long enough! We go through it on Episode 51 of the SSFC Podcast. First, we talk about how Concacaf completely bungled the announcement of this Gold Cup schedule, including releasing the list of venues without dates or who would be playing there. Less than 2 months before the start of the tournament, we finally learn where teams will be playing, which is making fans scramble to make summer plans.
