After his mother’s death, Bobby and his father are estranged over the family house. Bobby builds a sound studio, produces records and does well until a girlfriend lures him into cocaine use. Rapidly, he loses everything to his addiction. He borrows, steals and hates himself; but calls a radio preacher who prays for him. When he steals a friend’s VCR, he goes into drug rehab. There a Christian group comes in and reads the Bible. Bobby prays for salvation. He is reconciled to his father before his father’s death. He marries and starts his own agency. Now a church deacon and pianist.

Emiline’s childhood is miserable, so she marries at sixteen. Her husband, Fred, begins to change after the birth of their second daughter. He treats her badly. Her brother, Bob, talks to her about Jesus before he dies at nineteen. Then two baby sons die after birth. Her husband becomes abusive and she runs around to get even. Finally, after the birth of a son, she divorces him. She meets Orville, a new Christian who also dies, and she puts Christ in the center of her life. She hears “Unshackled!” and goes to Pacific Garden Mission for help.

Fred grows in faith, witnessing to classmates, standing up to teachers. He leaves commerce college to tackle Bible school where he learns to submit to God by submitting to unfair authority. He marries Suzette and they serve in a communist infested area, receiving death threats and no support. Fred suffers periodic paralysis and a heart attack from an untreated thyroid condition, but he labors on serving the Lord.

Morry marries Jean and they raise five children while being active in ministry. Sons Craig and Brent rebel, smoking, drinking and using drugs. Brent surrenders to Christ at fourteen and Craig goes forward but can’t quit using drugs. Brent takes his brother to a Christian movie where Craig gets saved. Both brothers are now pastors. At 75 Morry has a stroke and lives in a nursing home. A soldier in Brent’s church is captured in Iraq and the story ends with Brent’s sermon on our hope in Christ.

Lloyd grows up in an Orthodox Jewish family. He joins the army at nineteen to escape his domineering mother. His bi-polar disorder manifests itself in the army and he gets two courts martial. His father hospitalizes him. From then on Lloyd periodically sees a psychiatrist. While manic, Lloyd can’t control his impulses to run away or gamble in Las Vegas. Gambling and infidelity destroy his first marriage and threaten his second one. At age 73 he meets a pastor who invites him to church. Finally, Lloyd receives Christ at 77. Still active in church at 81.

Solomon is blinded and burned over all his body when he pulls a pot of boiling beans on himself as a child. His family abandons him, giving him to Emperor Haile Selassie, who supports the boy. Solomon is educated in a Christian mission school, but rebels against God and mocks Christianity. One day he enters a chapel to hear the music and goes forward to give his life to Christ. He goes to law school and marries; but they are persecuted by the Communist government in Ethiopia. Solomon comes to the U.S. on a Fulbright Scholarship and now serves with the mission that helped him.

Born in Quebec, Terry and his twin brother are adopted by an American couple. Terry is dyslexic and constantly ridiculed at school as stupid. His parents love and support him, but he withdraws into an imaginary world of fantasy. In spite of his father’s death when Terry is twelve, Terry graduates and completes training to be a mechanic. He hates the job, but a co-worker leads him to the Lord, changing everything.

Levi grows up in a large poor family in West Virginia. His dad has a violent temper, so Levi takes a beating for his brother at age sixteen, leading to a schism with his dad. He joins the army after Pearl Harbor, fights in Europe with Patton’s army and learns to forgive the Germans as the war ends. He is injured and hospitalized with blood poisoning, but recovers. Coming home, his dad still won’t talk to him. Levi and sister go to Cincinnati to school where another student takes him to a mission and Levi is saved. First part ends as he prepares to go home and tell his dad about Jesus.

Premature Deb needs oxygen that leaves her blind at two months. She attends public school, prays for salvation at ten and again at fourteen when she is raped by her sister’s fiancé. She and her father quarrel so much, she goes away to a school for the blind but a bad housemother leaves her bitter. She graduates and attends a vocational school for the blind. But the rape secret leads to emotional illness and anorexia. She is hospitalized for four months. Afterward, she goes to another school for the blind where she meets Don, also blind, and they live together before marriage. He is abusive, beating her often. A pastor comes to their home and they recommit their lives to Christ. Don dies of an epileptic seizure and heart failure as the first part ends.
