Episode 282: 2022 BMW i4 M50, Ford Lightning Towing Tragedy, Toyota GR 86 Engine Explosion, 2023 Chevrolet Colorado, 2023 Ford Maverick Tremor Aug 07, 2022

Benjamin discusses his time in the 2022 BMW i4, and not just any ole i4, but the M50 version with incredible performance metrics. You'll want to hear all the details about how this EV-converted 4 Series feels on the road, and whether it follows the same mantra as BMWs other electric vehicle, the iX.

From there the duo dive into a variety of topics including the shockingly bad range of electric pickups when they're towing, according to some tests done over at MotorTrend with the new F-150 Lightning. The pair then discuss a racing-related Toyota GR86 warranty denial, before getting to a pair of all new pickups from Ford and Chevy.

You'll want to hear all the news, information and inside jokes this week and beyond, so don't forget to subscribe to get more.

Episode 281: 2022 Ford Bronco Sport Outer Banks, 2022 BMW iX xDrive50 Jul 31, 2022

House of WILDERNESS, TRD, TRAIL RATED and WILDTRAK your off-road romping days are numbered, as Benjamin and Sami arrive this week to talk about the new 2022 Ford Bronco Sport, a rugged alternative to the Ford Escape and a competitor to many other compact crossovers on the market. Outfitted with a turbocharged three-cylinder, Sami talks about how it handles the rigours of everyday driving, and the various pros and cons of pretending to go off-road.

Then Benjamin chimes in about cruising around in the electrified 2022 BMW iX xDrive50. Ben admits he has a fondness for the car's massive grille, and expresses his appreciation for electric vehicles that don't feel janky or like science experiments.

After hearing Mr. Hunting fawn over various aspects of the iX, while simultaneously criticizing its scale-busting curb weight, consider heading over to unnamedautomotivepodcast.com to subscribe, contact us or check out past episodes!

Episode 280: 2022 Kia EV6, Sami's Jordan Cars, Cadillac Says Hush About Lyriq, Weird Blazer EV Features, Confusing Toyota Crowns, Hazy Honda Pilot Memories Jul 24, 2022

Sami and Benjamin have returned from their vacations with plenty of stories to tell. First the two catch up with all the cool cars and sights during their travels, with Ben reflecting on a certain era of vehicle that stands out in his mind after an unusual old school Honda Pilot encounter.

Then the pair dive into a conversation about the new 2022 Kia EV6, an all-electric car that's mechanically similar to the Hyundai IONIQ 5, but with different styling and, somehow, more range. Benjamin describes his experience in vivid detail and explains why the EV6 nets 20 more miles on the EPA test cycle, along with the car's fatal flaw. You'll definitely want to hear whether or not you should pick one up over the similar IONIQ.

Then the two talk about some news that's been burning through automotive circles. Cadillac has been caught trying to get buyers of its new Lyriq EV to sign an NDA, which caught the attention of NHTSA, which relies on owner information and reports to determine safety concerns. Then the guys talk about the weird new Toyota Crown, which sports a body style that defies convenvention, along with why you would ever design a car that offered FWD, RWD, and AWD in the same package.

All that and more inside jokes and pure car talk can be found in this week's episode, so be sure to listen! Also consider sending us a review, or some feedback, since we love to hear from our listeners!

Episode 279: 2022 Toyota Tundra, 2022 Porsche Panamera Platinum, Crazy Sales Numbers Jul 10, 2022

Benjamin talks about his recent drive of the all-new 2002 Toyota Tundra and it's turbocharged six cylinder engine. Considering the Tundra's predecessor hailed from the Jurassic era, Benjamin goes into detail about how much has changed this time around and whether the Tundra has what it takes to best America's popular trucks.

Then listen closely as Sami shares the tale of his time in the 2022 Porsche Panamera Platinum Edition. The German sedan is pricey, large and far from sprightly, so of course Sami has a lot of questions about who this is for and why someone should get it.

Episode 278: 2022 Mazda CX-50, Sami's Trip To Goodwood Festival Of Speed Jul 03, 2022

We're back to discuss a new crossover and a wild enthusiast oriented event. First Benjamin talks about the new 2022 Mazda CX-50, which looks rugged and tough in all the marketing, but as it turns out that marketing is doing all the heavy lifting. Is the CX-50 comparable to a Forester Wilderness? And how much does that matter?

Then Sami comes back from merry old England and the Goodwood Festival of Speed, which he described as a celebration of all things performance and speed. He talks about the new race cars, the hill climb and bowing to Dukes, because he was raised that way.

Episode 277: 2022 Toyota Sienna, 2022 Subaru Forester WILDerness, The Future Of Mercedes-Benz And Car Tech Jun 26, 2022

The guys take two completely different paths this week on the Unnamed Automotive Podcast. First Sami goes the family friendly route with the 2022 Toyota Sienna. Available only as a hybrid, Sami starts off by describing a few of the vans shortcomings before diving into what makes this a smart entry in the world of three row vehicles.

Then Benjamin takes a walk on the wild side with the 2022 Subaru Forester Wilderness, an all-new trim package that boasts several off road modifications, similar to last year's Outback Wilderness. He seems pretty impressed with the effort applied by Subaru but he eventually gets pulled into a conversation about who exactly this crossover is made for.

Finally the duo discuss an interview on The Verge with Ola Källenius, the CEO of Mercedes-Benz where the concepts of legacy and marketing collide in predictably awkward fashion.

Welcome to the "Oops! All bangers!" edition of the Unnamed Automotive Podcast, where Ben and Sami dive into two of the coolest cars around. First Sami talks about the eighth-generation Rolls-Royce Phantom Series II that he drove (and was driven in) through Nice and Monaco. He talks how the company spent five years developing new wheel designs, and put twinkling stars in the headlight enclosures before describing the various customized models he got to check out before discussing the ultra luxury market and its clientele in detail.

Then Benjamin gets ample time to chat about the one of best cars on the market for automotive enthusiasts: the 2022 Mazdza MX-5 Miata. He tested the SOLD OUT Club model, describes what's important about that model, and decides whether it's worth buying above the base edition. Of course he also brings up the Japanese automaker's new direction in the automotive industry, and whether the Miata will ever be this good again.

Episode 275: 2022 Honda Ridgeline, 2022 Kia Telluride, Infotainment Sucks, Datsun Z Update Jun 12, 2022

They shook the magic eight ball and it came up "trucks." Sami and Benjamin dive into some rugged, practical machines this week, with Mr.Hunting starting with a closer look at the 2022 Honda Ridgeline. Now facing stiff competition from new trucklets like the Ford Maverick and Hyundai Santa Cruz, how can the Ridgeline stay appealing to shoppers? Benjamin points out a few of the flaws in Honda's approach, and the two brainstorm what is needed from the Japanese automaker to keep its name in peoples mouths.

Then Sami jumps into the 2022 Kia Telluride, a former darling of the automotive media. The Kia had also seen new rivals in the form of the new Jeep Grand Cherokee L and the Nissan Pathfinder. Can it still keep up? Should shoppers wait for the newly announced 2023 model? Sami jumps into each of those questions with reckless abandon and little time to think, so be ready for off-the-cuff answers.

Finally the two talk automotive news and Apples automotive dashboard design that's a part of iOS16, before Benjamin shares an update on his Datsun. Hear it all right here and be sure to subscribe to hear all the latest episodes throughout the summer.

Episode 273: 2022 Acura MDX Type S, 2022 BMW iX M60 EV, More Datsun Trouble May 29, 2022

This week on the Unnamed Automotive Podcast, the duo jump into action to discuss the 2023 BMW iX M60, a combination of BMW's M, i and X brands that looks... frumpy. Besides the exterior design, the M60 sports a ton of power and performance, especially in a straight line. But everyone knows that a BMW M product has to sound cool too, so be sure to hear Sami explain how the iX M60 achieves its signature soundtrack.

Then Benjamin dives in to talk about the 2022 Acura MDX Type S, which leverages Acura's once sexy sport trim for a new (nefarious?) purpose. With a turbocharged 3.0-litre six-cylinder engine, is the MDX Type S hot enough to be worthy of that name? Where else does its performance shine? Will Benjamin end up begging listeners to help him understand where Acura is going with this Type S branding?

Finally, Benjamin shares an update on his Datsun woes, and how he hopes to resolve his issues to get back on the track again.

Benjamin talks about his first impressions of the 2022 Hyundai IONIQ 5, the Korean automaker's mainstream EV which rides on an entirely EV-oriented platform. He discusses the vehicle's unique and approachable styling, the range and charging performance and touches on the driver assistance features before delivering his verdict on whether this is an EV worth checking out.

Then Sami finds himself in the driver's seat of a 2022 Land Rover Range Rover Velar, an SUV that used to look stylish, modern and fresh, but is now feeling a bit unrefined and out of sorts following the latest updates elsewhere in the Range Rover lineup. Hear his thoughts on the dizzying technology within the Velar, the start-stop system and the luxurious appointments of the cabin, before sharing his fears of being carjacked.

Finally, Sami and Benjamin discuss the latest news in the industry, including the reports of a new Thunderbird, a huge 8-seater Land Rover Defender and a funny looking rally Juke. Listen to it all and don't forget to subscribe if you haven't yet. Or leave us a review!

Benjamin and Sami are back after a short hiatus! The duo explain their mysterious absence before jumping back into whatever it is that makes the Unnamed Automotive Podcast so unstoppable. This week Benjamin describes his experience in the 2022 Audi RS e-tron GT, the speedy alternative to the Porsche Taycan and his first high performance EV experience. Sami then shares his thoughts on the European market after having spent two weeks abroad, including some fun road trips in the 2022 Toyota Yaris Cross. The subcompact crossover is quirky and efficient, and managed to impress it's fair share of fans.

Benjamin follows with an explanation of what it's like to tow his Datsun Z track car with the new 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer. Will his wallet will ever be the same? Episode 270: 2022 Audi S3, 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe, The Sound of the Batmobile Apr 24, 2022

When luxury car makers like Audi ask you how much performance you want, the options are Mild, Medium or Spicy. This Benjamin dives into the Medium flavour in the form of the 2022 Audi S3, and decides whether this middle ground is balanced or compromised, and how BMW and Mercedes-Benz fit into in the strange entry-level landscape.

Then Sami describes how the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee gets the 4xe treatment, having tested it out in Austin, Texas. Listen to him explain how the heavy battery pack impacts performance, whether it can still off-road, how much this electrified version of the vehicle costs, and if it's worth the extra cost.

Finally, Ben and Sami go nuts over the new Batmobile after watching The Batman, before closing out this weeks episode. Be sure to listen, subscribe and send us your feedback and questions so we can answer them all in the next episode.

Then Benjamin talks about his time in the 2022 Lexus NX 350h, an overwhelmingly popular luxury vehicle that was in need of a winning update. Is what we got a little too underwhelming? The pair wrap things up with a listener question about the reappearance of another legendary Honda nameplate.

Episode 268: 2022 Subaru Forester Wilderness, 2022 Kia Sorento PHEV, Listener Questions, The Fate Of The Dodge Journey Apr 10, 2022

Sami talks about his time and experience in the 2022 Subaru Forester WILDerness. This vehicle seems intent on reminding shoppers where Subaru lands on the SUV ruggedness scale, and that's 'at the tippy top.' With more ground clearance, beefy tires, skid plates and additional cooling, it's designed to be a rugged Forester, even though that seemed to be the default Subaru method not too long ago

Benjamin jumps in to talk about empeegees with the 2022 Kia Sorento PHEV. Is its teeny turbo gas engine and electric drivetrain enough to motivate this three row, six passenger SUV? Ben talks about efficiency and performance, and how they balance out the styling and pricing of the new model.

Finally the duo answer questions from listeners about new age parking strategies and the Dodge Journey. Listen, subscribe, and enjoy!

Episode 267: 2022 Toyota Corolla Cross, 2022 Toyota CH-R, Hurricane Turbo Motor, Honda ASIMO Retires Apr 03, 2022

This week on the Unnamed Automotive Podcast, witness something that's as rare as a double-rainbow: the double-Toyota subcompact crossover conversation. Sami and Benjamin discuss their experiences in Toyota's TWO small crossovers: the 2022 Corolla Cross and the C-HR. Is is a problem for Toyota and its customers? Which one of these two vehicles is better positioned for success? The pair also dive into the origin stories of the two cars and where they find the most love around the world.

Benjamin and Sami then celebrate the retirement of our longtime listener and fan, the Honda ASIMO, who will now go to a cushy robo retirement facility in Florida to live out the rest of its years. Additionally, our hosts dissect the new Hurricane engine from Stellantis, which signals that the era of awesome ICE propulsion isn't over yet.

Do like the posters on the wall say: Live, Laugh, Love, or in our case, Listen, Laugh, Like."

Note:_ A previous version of this episode went out a full day early with a few minutes of pre-podcast banter (disguised as CH-R/Corolla Cross research) somehow appended to the beginning. We apologize for the lack of professionalism on that premature launch, which can be blamed entirely on Benjamin, whose cognitive skills are rapidly deteroriating with age._ Thanks so much to the listener who brought the problem to our attention!

    Episode 266: 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee, 2022 Volvo C40, 2022 Volvo XC60 T8, Ridiculous Car Trim Names Mar 27, 2022

Benjamin talks about the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee and comes away thinking this may be a real competitor against the likes of German luxury. Hear him brag about the number of screens in his tester, and how Jeep manages to keep infotainment and other controls modern and simple.

Sami chimes in with his confusing experience in the 2022 Volvo C40 Recharge, a battery-electric vehicle with the same dimensions, powertrain and range as the XC40 EV, not to mention the Polestar 2. So what does the C40 do differently? Listen to Sami's highlights of the C40 and hear how Volvo is artificially inflating its showrooms.

Then the duo chats about weird and confusing car trim names but like FOOLS they forgot to mention the long list of night-time related black-out models. Finally, they end the episode on a riff of this weeks news, including details about an Infiniti crossover that will fit between the QX50 and QX60 and won't be called the QX55.

Episode 265: 2022 Volkswagen Taos, No More WRX STI, Acura Integra Sadness, This Or That Game Sami Edition Mar 20, 2022

As reliable as a 20 year old Toyota, we have yet another fun episode of the Unnamed Automotive Podcast for you to listen to this week. First Benjamin jumps in and talks about the massive hole left in VW's lineup that is being replaced by the 2022 Volkswagen Taos subcompact crossover. While the old Golf was a compact-car favorite, VW felt that Americans just didn't deserve it anymore, so here comes the spacious and efficient Taos. Benjamin ponders the new motor, the ride and the pricing, and explains what was going on at VW behind the scenes to produce in this vehicle (and whether there's any reason to check one out).

Then the duo rip through some of the hot news in the automotive industry. Specifically, there's super-sad information about the next generation Subaru WRX STI, and all the juicy details about the new Acura Integra. Finally, Benjamin takes Sami for a spin with his version of This-or-That, called That-or-This.

    Episode 264: 2022 Ford Maverick 2.0T AWD, 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 Mar 13, 2022

Its another twisty-turvy episode of the Unnamed Automotive Podcast, so buckle in and get ready! First Benjamin describes how he wasn't on the hype-train for the new 2022 Ford Maverick compact pickup truck. After hearing tons of other journalists, and even Sami talk it up a pedestal, Benjamin still had to try it for himself. Given his love for the Hyundai Santa Cruze, could the Maverick ever measure up? Also what did he put in the small cubbie on the dash? Find out his thoughts on where the Maverick fits in the wide automotive landscape, and whether its worth the money Ford is asking for it.

Then Sami jumps in to explain his contrasting experience with the 2022 Hyundai IONIQ 5. Everyone said good things, so he went in expecting a world-class vehicle, but does it deliver? What's the deal with modern EVs anyways? Is 300 miles just the plateau of performance and range? What does the horizon of EVs look like.

All of those questions and more are answered in this weeks fun-filled episode, so be sure to listen all the way through (or even multiple times, if you're that into it!)

Episode 263: 2022 BMW M240i xDrive, Kia Synthesizer, Hands On a Hardbody Mar 06, 2022

It's another episode of the Unnamed Automotive Podcast, and this time, we're talking cars. Benjamin has a lot to say about the latest two door BMW, the 2022 M240i xDrive. With more power, and a longer wheelbase, this coupe is a departure from what the 2 series used to represent, and hints towards the future that BMW is building for its brand. Is more power ever a bad thing? What does this mean for the future M2? Where are all the useless gimmicks? All that and more are answered.

Then Sami brings up some news topics, including Kia's push for EVs which may or may not include some pickup trucks, which has our hosts wondering, are there enough EV pickups? Speaking of which, news was shared about the upcoming Ram EV Pickup, which will use a body on frame design, making it fairly unique in the world of EVs. Then we get a closer look at the upcoming Jeep EV. Benjamin also shares his mild enthusiasm for a recently released Kia musical instrument.

Finally, to end the episode, Benjamin describes a '90s phenomenom known as Hands on a Hard Body. A contest that stressed out participants mentally and physically, it left a mark on Benjamin with its sad 2000s coda. Listen to all of this and don't forget to rate, review and subscribe for more great automotive content.

    • "Hands On a Hardbody" Transformed Truck-Loving Endurance Into a Cultural Phenomenon — For decades, dealerships have been putting a spin on the sock-hop dance-offs of old, only instead of waltzing their way to victory, contestants merely have to stand beside a vehicle, commonly a little hardbody like a Nissan Hardbody pickup. The catch: maintain at least a modicum of physical contact with it over a specific period of time.

    Episode 262: 2022 Infiniti QX60, 2022 Lexus NX, 2022 BMW X3, 2022 Genesis GV70, McDonald's Arch Deluxe, Lightning Round Game Feb 27, 2022

Benjamin drives the new 2022 Infiniti QX60 and frames his take on it by discusshing the heirarchy of luxury car brands. What is Tier 1 Luxury anyways and where does Infiniti rank? While the QX60 shares many components with the Nissan Pathfinder, the styling and effort with the details are supposed to make it stand out, so find out what Benjamin thinks after his time with the 3-row Japanese luxury SUV.

Then Sami goes on a wild discussion about three of the newest and hottest luxury crossovers on the market. The 2022 Lexus NX has a new look and touch-screen interface, but is that enough to overcome the other options in the segment? The 2022 BMW X3 has the best motor in the segment, and a familiar cabin and experience, though can feel a bit choppy at times. Finally the 2022 Genesis GV70 seems like the jack-of-all-trades, with an experience that's good enough for most.

Finally, Sami surprises Ben with a new lightning round game called "This or That." You won't want to miss it! Download, stream, rate, review, subscribe or do whatever you want to do! Thanks for listening! Arch Deluxe!

Episode 261: 2022 BMW Alpina B8, 2022 Toyota Highlander, 2022 Volvo V90 Cross Country, Weird Lexus Infotainment Designer Story, Benjamin's Nightmare Teeth Feb 20, 2022

We're back with a other jam packed episode of the Unnamed Automotive Podcast. First Benjamin shakes off the post surgery blues in a green (paint, not personality) Alpina B8. This BMW+1 brand has made a name for itself over the years but it's recently stepped up its charms. Benjamin runs down what makes it so special and why it might be the coolest new BMW on the road.

Sami then shares his thoughts on the 2022 Toyota Highlander, after his time comparing it to the Nissan Pathfinder. The Toyota always sits atop the sales charts, and Sami shares exactly why that is. The two go on a but of a tangent about the Lexus infotainment system and how it is finally changing for the better, before Benjamin talks about the driver assistance woes of the 2022 Volvo V90 Cross Country. Then Benjamin's horrific mouth calls it a day and the two close up the podcast for another week.

    Episode 260: 2022 Volkswagen Golf R, 2022 Subaru Ascent. Utes Feb 06, 2022

You might have heard that North Americans only get the 2022 Volkswagen Golf in enthusiast grade GTI and R forms. Recently, Benjamin picked up the keys to the more powerful of the two, and while there was a massive winter storm blowing snow during his testing, it wasn't the weather conditions that left him cold. Hear what VW has done to the most recent generation Golf R and whether Benjamin would recommend it.

Sami then talks about how Subaru reached relevancy with its Ascent three-row back when it launched, but has struggled to do anything worthwhile with it since. Is the basic family crossover still good enough for 2022 or is the competition's more premium and powerful entries stealing the spotilgiht?

Finally, Sami and Benjamin discuss another forbidden-fruit market segment: the 'Ute. Once mildly popular in North America, the 'ute was a bigger deal in other parts of the world. The duo ponder why and try to figure out if there are any hopes for more 'utes for us in the future.

Episode 259: 2022 Hyundai Kona N Line, 2022 Honda Civic Hatchback, 2022 Kia Forte5, High Performance Driving Tips Jan 30, 2022

Benjamin discusses his go around in the 2022 Hyundai Kona N-Line, a crossover that strives to be the median point beween the standard Kona and the speedy Kona N. Hyundai is trying to follow the path of the German M Sports and AMG Lines, but is the Kona N-Line a successful push in the right direction? Is this just a style and attitude package, a weak echo of the Pontiac Trans Am Firehawk?

Sami then chimes in with his recent experience in two compact hatchbacks. A dying breed, the 2022 Honda Civic Hatchback and the Canada-only 2022 Kia Forte5 GT are both available with manual transmissions. Sami seems to think the hatchback styling of these cars stray too close to the sedan variants, and that cars like these are slowly losing their relevance to crossovers.

Finally, the duo discuss high-performanc driving techniques and how they apply to driving in the snow.

Episode 258: 2022 Honda Civic Si, 2022 Hyundai Veloster N DCT, Benjamin's Jeep Grand Wagoner Auction Rant Jan 23, 2022

This week our hosts go fast and the furious. 2022-style, with a pair of sporty compact cars. First Sami talks about the 2022 Honda Civic Si, a sedan that's grown up over the past few generations. Benjamin wonders why Honda won't give the Si more than 200 horsepower from the factory, and Sami asks if the Civic is still true to its sport-compact roots.

Benjamin then jumps to the 2022 Hyundai Veloster N, which is now the only model in the Veloster lineup. This quirky three door hatchback has impressed him in the past, but does it still feel good with the new dual-clutch transmission? Sami wonders if the niche Veloster is on the way out, or if quirky vehicles like the Veloster need to be alive in order to secure any charm in the market.

Finally Benjamin talks about the recent sky-high auction prices of the classic Jeep Grand Wagoneer, and how that impacts his ownership experience. Listen to it all right here, and don't forget to check in with our hosts on social media or email.

Episode 257: 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee L, 2024 Chevrolet Silverado EV, 2022 Toyota Corolla Cross, Guest Stephen Elmer Jan 16, 2022

It's time for another great guest host. Sami and Benjamin are joined by the one and only Stephen Elmer from the Truck King YouTube channel. First the three discuss the new 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee L, where the L stands for "Third Row," a phrase which doesn't contain a single L within it. Or maybe it stands for "Premium Interior," another statement without the 12th letter of the alphabet. It could also stand for "Baby Wagoneer" or "Bigger Cherokee," but you'll have to listen to the whole episode to get the real scoop on this longer wheelbase, family-friendly Jeep.

Then our guest Stephen Elmer brings up the recently revealed 2024 Chevrolet Silverado EV, its Avalanche-inspired design, Hummer-derived powertrain, house-capable tow rating, and girthy price spread. Is the world ready for these electric truck wars? Are the roads ready? Are the charging stations ready? (Probably no to all those questions)

Finally, the guys get Sami to talk about the 2022 Toyota Corolla Cross, a subcompact crossover that will make you forget about the Japanese automaker's previous effort in that segment (the lamented C-HR).

    Episode 256: 2022 Ford Maverick, 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5, 2022 BMW X3 M40i, Guest Chad Kirchner, Listener Questions Jan 09, 2022

For 2022, Benjamin, Sami Haj-Assaad and guest Chad Kirchner from EV Pulse ask you to consider 3D printing your own podcast, much like how the much hyped 2022 Ford Maverick provides you with instructions to DIY your own accessories. The trio talk about the little Ford trucklet in great detail, and determine if it's worthy of praise, or if it's just a modern take on the cheap truck template.

Chad then discusses about his recent test of the Hyundai Ioniq 5, an all new EV from the Korean automaker, with a new platform, design language, technology, and battery setup. With a la-z-boy style recliner seat and a bunch of screens, it seems perfect for playing a made up augmented reality game that combines Pokemon Go and Carmageddon—not to mention providing a potential answer to our latest listener question.

Finally Ben jumps into the 2022 BMW X3 M40i and describes how sport-leaning SUVs have become less comfortable and slightly more annoying to drive. Also in this episode: the trio discuss new ideas for a viral Instagram account detailing Ford Maverick Fails.

Episode 255: 2022 Nissan Pathfinder, Best Cars Of The Year 2022 Edition Dec 26, 2021

Before they get ready for the holidays, the hosts of the Unnamed Automotive Podcast get together for one more episode. Benjamin shares his experiences aboard the 2022 Nissan Pathfinder and tries to decide if it really is a "return to rugged" or just another three-row SUV in a crowded field of contenders. To get to that answer, he dives into a rabbit hole of Pathfinder info, discussing past generations and their impact on the Nissan portfolio, before pointing out the highlights of Nissan's latest effort to build a strong identity for its popular sport-utility vehicle.

Sami and Ben also share their thoughts on their favourite cars and trucks for 2021. Make your bets early, because there are so many picks that the hosts don't really give you a moment to think about it. Episode 254: 2021 Ford Bronco Wildtrak, 2021 Ford Escape Plug-In Hybrid, Forbidden Fruit Kei Cars, BMW M Book Review, Listener Questions Dec 19, 2021

Benjamin talks about his experience in the new 2021 Ford Bronco Wildrak, and explores how the Blue Oval has worked to keep up with the legacy and momentum of the Jeep Wrangler. Was the Wrangler as easy of a target as Ford thought it was? Benjamin decides whether the Bronco beats its Jeep bogey in any meaningful way, and whether the hype machine surrounding the Ford is warranted.

The Sami jumps into the newly-electrified 2021 Ford Escape PHEV, and wonders if this vehicle was made to satisfy an eco-cred quotient, or if it had an intended target in the market. With 37 miles of consistent electric range to compare to the Tucson PHEVs 33 and RAV4 Prime's 42, is the Escape a happy medium between the two?

Finally, the pair dive into a new segment this week, talking about an entire class of vehicle that eluded the North American market—the kei cars of Japan—before wrapping things up with a BMW M book review and a listener question. Tons of stuff to listen to this week, but don't hesitate to reach out with any questions or comments!

Episode 253: 2022 Hyundai Santa Cruz Pickup, 2022 Genesis GV70 2.5, Performance Driving Tips, Listener Emails Dec 12, 2021

Benjamin dives deep into the crossover-turned-pickup-truck known as the 2022 Hyundai Santa Cruz. As Sami chants "Utes not Coupes," he explains why this quirky compact trucklet is in the running for his Car of the Year. Or would that be Truck of the Year?

Sami gets another go in the 2022 Genesis GV70, but this time it's the more affordable 2.5T model. Considering there's a $20,000 gap between the entry level turbo 4 and the top trim V6, his experience provides a rounded understanding of the Korean luxury crossover., one that sends the duo on a nostalgic trip to a time when Infiniti was a competitive brand

There's also a new segment this week, where Benjamin explains the importance of understanding your tire's contact patch and how time at the track can help you feel confident and safe driving in winter weather. Don't just read this description, start listening to the Unnamed Automotive Podcast!

On this week's episode our hosts dive deep into a pair of cars that struggle to impress. First Sami describes the mild updates to the 2022 Volvo XC60 B6, which gets a new Johan De Nysschen-like nomenclature to go along with a Google-branded operating system and a beefy 48-volt electrical system. Is the twin-charged motor and minimalist styling enough to save this Swedish luxury crossover from Sami's ire and discontent?

Next, Benjamin gets his hands on the 2022 Toyota Prius Prime, a plug-in variant of the popular, yet one-note hybrid. Listen to how Benjamin's frustrating experience with the car's electric range fails to match up with its advertised figures, then hear his one weird trick to using as little gas as possible.

    Episode 251: 2022 Rolls-Royce Ghost Black Label, 2022 Subaru Outback Wilderness, 2022 Nissan Rogue Nov 28, 2021

If you're the type to have a whole different 'podcast listening vibe' at night versus during the day, then this week's episode is for you! Sami starts out with his experience in the new 2022 Rolls-Royce Ghost Black Badge: its history, its relevance, and its weird placement in RR lore that certainly doesn't suggest it's the perfect ride for a nocturnal pyschopath on a killing spree.

Benjamin then shares his thoughts on the 2022 Subaru Outback WILDerness, and whether it's the real off-roading Subaru deal or just another somewhat goofy trim package for those secret Pontiac stans who really, really love plastic body cladding.

Finally, Sami and Benjamin talk about marketing versus real-world fuel numbers in the new variable compression, turbo three-equipped 2022 Nissan Rogue, where Sami reveals his deep-seated fears that someone, somewhere, is playing an elaborate trick on would-be Nissan buyers.

    Episode 250: 2022 Nissan Frontier PRO-4X, 2022 BMW 2 Series, LA Auto Show, Dolphin-Safe Cars Nov 21, 2021

Sami and Benjamin team up again to talk about the 2022 Nissan Frontier, a vehicle that hasn't seen a significant update since before pop culture references were a thing! Hear whether Benjamin digs the styling, the interior updates, the powerful new engine or the nine-speed automatic transmission. Or more likely hear how his wimpy arms can't handle the hydraulic power steering setup. The duo discuss whether the Nissan Frontier is a pack leader, or just a truck stuck in limbo, waiting for the world to be taken over by lifestyle pickups like the Hyundai Santa Cruz and Ford Maverick.

Sami also dives into the larger, heavier, biggers, heavier, faster, heavier and wider 2022 BMW 2 Series Coupe. He seems to suggest that it's bigger, but that can't be true, can it? Hear his impressions, both positive and negative on this weighty subject, and how the modern era of BMW weighs in compared to what we know and love about the brand.

Episode 249: 2022 BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe, 2022 Kia Carnival, Forza Horizon 5, Hot Wheels Unleashed Video Game Nov 14, 2021

Sami starts things off with a discussion of the new 2022 BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe, a weird car that fills a narrow space in the industry, but seems to capture the hearts of enthusiasts (or at least Sami's) in a way that no robot (Subaru or Honda branded one) can match.

Also, the pair ponder where a scorpion would hide out from the heat within the folds of the BMW's design. This segment has a ton of fun segues, including "remember the (insert random acroynm of BMW vehicle here)?" and "What's better, a weird hatchback, a wagon, or a lifted wagon with body cladding?"

Benjamin then brings up how much fun he had with the 2022 Carnival, Kia's new minivan that goes all-in on luxury. While Sami whines that "minivans are for families," Benjamin remains perfectly composed in describing the true K-luxury offered by #vanlife.

Finally, Sami talks quickly about a pair of video games he's been playing that seem to treat car enthusiasts honestly: Forza Horizon 5 and Hot Wheels Unleashed. As usual, check out the website for more content, and don't forget to subscribe or send a review!

    Episode 248: 2022 Mini Cooper S 4-Door, 2022 Mercedes-AMG SL-Class, Did O.G. Hummer Have A Chance, Rivian's Toxic Bro Culture Nov 07, 2021

It's time for a fantastic voyage into the four-door 2022 Mini Cooper S. As Benjamin compares the experience of driving this against the John Cooper Works convertible he had a few weeks ago, Sami brings up the vast amount of available features and extra cost items that can be had on a modern Mini. Hear their final thoughts on whether the four-door Cooper is the one to get, or even if its worth considering at all in a market full of strong compacts.

The pair then chat about the new 2022 Mercedes-AMG SL Class, and ponder about its journey from flagship roadster to the also-ran status it's heading towards. With all-wheel-drive, rear seats, a soft top, and AMG development, it sounds more and more like a 911 wannabe than a true SL, which was a sought-after classicfor decades.

Then the car talk shifts to another icon, but this time of the late '90s and early 00s: Hummer. Benjamin theorizes that the Hummer nameplate could have survived if other automakers jumped into the same market it was competing in, and describes three 2000s-era concepts that never came to fruition: the Dodge Power Wagon, Ford Equator and the Hummer HX/H4.

Finally, the pair discuss some ugly news coming out of Rivian and tackle the challenges presented by allegations regarding its toxic bro culture.

    Links:

    • Life Outside the Boys Club: Why I Spoke Up About Rivian’s Toxic Bro Culture (and Got Fired) — Rivian publicly boasts about its culture, so it was a crushing blow when I joined the company and almost immediately experienced a toxic bro culture that marginalizes women and contributes to the company making mistakes. Episode 247: 2022 Bentley Flying Spur, 2022 BMW M4 Competition Track Tested, 2022 BMW Alpina B8 Gran Coupe Oct 31, 2021

Benjamin slumps into his chair and sighs, missing the 2022 Bentley Flying Spur he's recently tested. It's his first taste of Bently goodness and he has a lot to say about about the ultra-luxurious, ultra exclusive sedan. He goes through some of the pricey options (like the hood ornament) and intimately describes the car's flashy James Bondian dashboard.

Sami then gives us his quick impressions of the new all-wheel-drive 2022 BMW M4 Competition, which he drove on the curvy course at Thermal. He follows that up 2022 BMW Alpina B8 Gran Coupe, a car that may look like the average 8 Series, but which hides a far more exclusive secret, forcing Benjamin to grill Sami about his sensibilities by asking if this Alpina worth nearly $10,000 more than the M8 Gran Coupe that the two podcast hosts enjoyed just a year ago.

    Episode 246: 2022 Lexus NX, 2022 Toyota Tundra, 2022 Genesis G70 3.3T AWD Oct 24, 2021

Last week on UAP Sami and Benjamin agreed that the 2022 Genesis GV70 SUV is a class leader, but this week Sami is already flip-flopping on that statement. It turns out the new 2022 Lexus NX plug-in hybrid has caught his attention and he's blabbering non-stop about the new Japanese compact crossover.

The pair take a few tangents into Volvo XC40 territory, before bringing up the new 2022 Toyota Tundra and its sneaker inspired powertrain. While other truckmakers offer V8s and diesels, will Toyota survive with just a pair of V6 offerings? Does it have a chance against the hybrid Ford F-150?

Finally Benjamin shares all the details of his roadtrip experience in the refreshed 2022 Genesis G70. While he gushes about the powertrain and value, he also wonders if Genesis is ready to abandon its entry level sport sedan like much of the rest of the industry seems set to do.

    Episode 245: 2022 Ford Bronco, 2022 Hyundai Santa Cruz, 2022 Genesis GV70 Oct 17, 2021

Sami and Benjamin are BACK! Sami gives his first impressions of Fords Jeep Wrangler-rival, aka the 2022 Bronco. Does it fill all the gaps left behind by Jeep's iconic SUV? Did he get wet from a leaky roof? Can a vehicle with the name BAD in its trim be a success? You gotta listen to find out! Then Sami jumps into the 2022 Hyundai Santa Cruz, and reassures listeners that this isn't a Subaru Baja re-do.

Benjamin follows up with his thorough review of the 2022 Genesis GV70, (even though he forgot KEY DETAILS ABOUT THE POWERTRAIN) as well as it's somewhat confusing controls and biometric monitoring. Is the only thing holding Genesis back from mainstream success a mention in a Jay Z track?

Sami then talks compact car rankings, with the always popular 2022 Toyota Corolla and the less lower-profile 2022 Nissan Sentra going head to head before he explains where they among the best in the segment. Episode 243: 2022 Hyundai Elantra N-Line, 2021 Chevrolet Suburban Duramax Diesel Sep 26, 2021

Sami takes the 2022 Hyundai Elantra N-Line for a spin, which is the right car for those that want a sporty compact but are afraid of jumping in with both feet. The pair compare the new N-Line to the old Elantra Sport and ask if enough progress has been made in this enthusiast friendly market segment or if buyers should look outside of the Hyundai showroom.

Benjamin then jumps into the 2021 Chevrolet Suburban Duramax Diesel, a large and in charge SUV that proves to be perfect for road trip duty. Warning: This episode also takes random tangents into discussion of the redesigned Subaru WRX and the Ford Expedition Timberline.

Episode 242: 2021 Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio, 2022 Honda Civic Sep 19, 2021

Benjamin plops himself into the driver seat of yet anout $70,000 machine boasting more than 500 horsepower,, This time it's the Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio. After driving a pair of hi-po BMW M cars back-to-back, how does this rare Italian fare?

Sami gets his hands on the accessible and impressive 2022 Honda Civic, a "compact" car that's as long as a not-so-old Honda Accord. The pair wonder if compact cars are gone for good while Sami explains the major differences between this Civic and the previous generation.

Sami then explains his ill-fated plan to go road tripping in the 2021 Mustang Mach E, where he finds out first-hand why the long-distance experience in an EV is cumbersome and clumsy. He claims it's ok that the coupe is automatic-only because it provides a serious power upgrade for very little cash—even compared to similarly-priced muscle cars like the Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 and the Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat Redeye.

Sami samples the 2022 Genesis GV70, a vehicle that has the entire weight of the Genesis brand on its fenders. Luckily, it has features like a 3D gauge cluster and a fingerprint reader to accomplish its mission. Is it good enough to overshadow its German SUV rivals?

Episode 239: 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer, 2021 Subaru Outback Wilderness Aug 29, 2021

For decades, scholars and researchers have pondered: how many screens are too many? Benjamin and Sami get to the bottom of this topic after a long drive in the 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer, which is a brand new model in the Jeep portfolio that doesn't wear a Jeep badge anywhere in sight.

Later, Sami changes his mind about Subaru's midsized crossover and goes full-Sasquatch for the 2021 Subaru Outback Wilderness trim, which he says is what the model should have been in the first place. Now we all know what to get Sami for Christmas: more plastic body cladding.

Sami brings hands-on impressions of the car that changes its name every other year, 2022 Toyota GR 86, followed by Benjamin's time in the unanimously great Lexus LC500, which somehow gets better after losing a core part of its structure. The pair talk about Japanese rear-wheel-drive coupes as if they're a dying breed. Wait... are they a dying breed?

Then it's time to answer some (non-personal) listener questions, before going off on yet another tangent about something completely unrelated.

    Episode 237: 2021 Land Rover Defender 90, Listener Questions Aug 15, 2021

It's time to talk Defender, which you'd think would be the latest Marvel superhero movie but in this case is actually an off-road nameplate that is making its way to North America for the first time—officially—after decades of grey market imports. Benjamin and Sami each spent a week in the two-door 2021 Land Rover Defender 90, and they've got some definite thoughts about this latest, and not-so-luxurious, yet so-very-capable effort from the British brand. The 2021 Mercedes-AMG E63 S 4MATIC wagon is an enthusiast's dream, with over 600 horsepower in a long-roof package that glares aggressively across the showroom at overweight SUVs. Benjamin spends a week behind the wheel of the E63 S wagon to try and decide whether the longtime segment leader is a match for the upstart Audi RS6 Avant.

Sami heads into crossover country to match up the compact 2021 Mitsubishi Outlander three-row versus the mid-size 2021 Kia Sorento in a bid to discover whether it makes sense to get more features and less passenger room in a compact SUV or instead enjoy the extra space of a modestly-equipped mid-sizer choice.

Meanwhile, Benjamin drives the 'other' Bronco, the 2021 Ford Bronco Sport, to see how far it rises above its Escape crossover roots.

Benjamin then discusses his surprising affinity for the 2021 Lincoln Navigator, claiming it's at least the equal of several more expensive full-size luxury SUVs, followed by Sami's comparison of the wild-looking 2021 Hyundai Tucson Hybrid and the more reserved 2021 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid.

Benjamin gets his neck snapped in two by its instant-on torque so he can talk about head bobbles, underwhelming interiors, and the chances that Polestar can lure away Tesla buyers. Is the 2021 Mazda CX-9 a stealth luxury SUV at a much more affordable price? Benjamin certainly seems to think so, especially after trading in the Acura MDX in favor of the older, yet somehow better Mazda design. Sami also works out a comparison between two SUVs: the 2021 Toyota Highlander and the newer 2021 Kia Telluride challenger, and discovers that Toyota fans might not be shopping around before making their pick.

Sami loves the look and feel of the 2021 Kia K5 GT-Line AWD but questions just how well its drivetrain stands up to direct competitors like the Toyota Camry.

The 2021 BMW M5 Competition might be the perfect luxury sedan, if crushing power and four-door track performance are your thing. Benjamin argues that as impressive as the car is, 90 percent of buyers would be just as well served by the also-fantastic BMW M550i xDrive.

Sami dives into the 2021 Infiniti QX55 SUV, and while he loves the looks inside and out he's not so sure Infiniti makes a compelling argument as to why the QX55 should be picked out of a very deep premium crossover field.

Finally, after a lengthy rant about the 'waterfall capital of Canada,' the pair answer a listener question about the best era for driver's cars.

Sami tracks down shooting stars in the headliner of the 2021 Rolls-Royce Ghost while expressing his intense anxiety about parking a car that costs half a million dollars.

Is the 2021 Mitsubishi Outlander a carbon-copy of its Nissan Rogue platform-mate, or does it stand as a legitimate alternative despite all of its shared bits and pieces? Sami is pleasantly surprised by Mitsubishi's latest small SUV.

Benjamin goes road-tripping in the 2021 Genesis G80 sedan, and discovers that good things still come in sedan packages, especially when it comes to upstart luxury brands.

Things go completely off the rails, however, when Sami reveals that the upcomign 2022 Genesis GV70 SUV and refreshed G70 sedan come with an in-car radar system to spy on the backseat, combined with a fingerprint reader to do...something?

After picking apart the absurdities of the automotive surveillance state, and calculating just how safe rear seat radar might be for those with pacemakers and lazy eyes, the pair review the book 'Dodge Viper - The full story of the world's first V10 sports car," by David Zatz.

The 2021 Volvo S60 T5 is a premium sedan in a world gone over almost completely to crossovers, and Sami and Benjamin get deep with just how surprising its past decade has been for a brand that few would have thought would still be in the luxury conversation so many years later.

Benjamin then startles Sami by singing the praises of the 2021 Lexus RX 450h, a hybrid SUV that would seem to be the anti-enthusiast machine—which is exactly the point, as Benjamin points out. The pair wrap things up with their thoughts on the production Jeep Grand Wagoneer as well as the cost of electricity as it informs EV buying decisions.

    Episode 215: 2021 Acura TLX A-Spec, 2021 Nissan Sentra Mar 14, 2021

The 2021 Chevrolet Blazer RS resurrects a name that at first feels laden with SUV heritage, but as Benjamin points out isn't all fun and two-door off-roading games. Sami's time behind the Blazer's wheel reveals mixed feelings about why GM didn't go all the way in making the family ride live up to its potential.

Benjamin then discusses his week-long try-out of the 2021 Kia Stinger GT as a potential year-round daily driver, and mentions what he still loves about the twin-turbo hatch, and what let him down in the years between his first drive back in 2018 and the current model.

More on that at the end of the episode, because first Benjamin has to shake out his ambivalence at the 2021 Kia K5 GT-Line AWD and its ho-hum drivetrain, and Sami needs to wax ecstatic about the (finally) redesigned 2022 Nissan Frontier mid-size pickup. In between. there's an argument about the 2021 Ford F-150 Raptor and just how useful off-road driver assistance features really are.

Is there space for the 2021 Kia Seltos SX Turbo's top-end take on what should really be an affordable, no-frills compact SUV, or does its own brand's ultra-competitive line-up make it hard to justify spending the extra cash? Benjamin's week behind the wheel reveals the surprising answer.

Next, Sami's take on the 2021 Hyundai Elantra shows just how much life is still left in the small sedan segment.

Finally, the pair are puzzled by Tesla's decision to leave steering wheels and turn signals behind with the latest Model S EV refresh.

Does the 2021 Kia Niro EV deliver the kind of range and cold weather competence needed to deal with the winter's darkest depths? Benjamin wheels through sub-zero conditions to report on the surprisingly solid electric performance from Kia's battery-powered crossover. After a brief tangent about warning messages, Sami then ponders the new path Mazda has taken with the non-turbo 3's all-wheel drive model, which trades poise for a premium cabin.

Episode 207: 2021 Subaru Crosstrek 2.5, 2021 Toyota Corolla SE Apex Edition, Jaguar Book Review, Benjamin Hates CES Jan 17, 2021

Sami counters with the 2021 Toyota Corolla SE Apex Edition, a car he's lukewarm on before Benjamin points out all the cool upgrades he's totally downplaying.

The two then discuss CES, how Benjamin hates it so much that it once sent him into a career-questioning tailspin in a Las Vegas hotel room, and how terrible it is that companies like Cadillac are bringing windowless autonomous pods to the digital-only show. The pair wrap things up with a review of TWR's Le Mans-Winning Jaguars by John Starkey.

Everything Sami liked, and didn't like, about Porsche's first all-electric car gets mushed together with talk about off-brand batteries and just how useful a 2.5-second random 'boost' really is for driving enthusiasts.

The pair then follow up with a deep look at the 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee L, the first three-row version of the popular SUV ever built, before being distracted by all of the other, much better names Chrysler could have used to replace the boring letter tacked on to the end of the badge.

That's the surprising conclusion Benjamin is forced to reckon with after an extended period behind the wheel of the 2021 BMW X5 xDrive45e. Sami then attempts to solve the puzzle of the 2021 Toyota Avalon AWD, a full-size model that drops power but adds traction in a bid to appeal to...who, exactly? Episode 204: 2021 Cadillac Escalade, Best Drives Of 2020 Dec 27, 2020

Is the 2021 Cadillac Escalade finaly worthy of flagship status? Is it different enough from the also-good GMC Yukon Denali to justify its six-figure window sticker? Both Benjamin and Sami spend a week with Cadillac's most advanced Escalade to date and come away with a lot to talk about. Wrapping things up, the pair mention the best vehicles they've been lucky enough to drive throughout 2020.

Episode 203: 2020 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited EcoDiesel, 2021 Lexus IS Dec 20, 2020

We've waited forever, but the EcoDiesel version of the Jeep Wrangler is finally here. Is Benjamin's second-favorite FCA power plant a worthy addition to the Wrangler line-up, or does the cost of entry make the turbodiesel SUV an outlier for off-road fans? Sami follows up with a full line drive of the 2021 Lexus IS, a sport sedan that seemingly triggers Benjamin's incredulity at the Lexus portfolio of vehicles.

Sami supports Benjain's new-found Rogue appreciation before diving into his own adventures dealing with the Audi E-Tron Sportback's limited battery range and extremely high sticker price. The pair wrap things up by deciding who had the cooler cars - the heroes or the villains - in each installment of the Fast and Furious film franchise.

Sami spends time with the four-door Land Rover and is surprised by the impression it makes on him. Even more surprising? His newfound love for the 2021 Toyota RAV4 Prime, whose plug-in hybrid drivetrain erases its previous sins.

Benjamin has a more confusing experience with the 2021 BMW 228i Gran Coupe. It's the most affordable BMW out there, but does it make the best introduction to the brand? And are there better choices for the same money in BMW's own showroom?

Benjamin is puzzled by the 2020 Nissan Titan PRO-4X, which needs to be better than the full-size pickup competition to catch eyes among truck buyers, but seems determined to merely match a narrow spectrum of what customers are looking for.

Sami splits between the 2021 Hyundai Elantra and the 2021 Hyundai Sonata N. Is the Elantra finally Civic-level in terms of its broad appeal? Can Benjamin be convinced that someone out there actually wants to pay that much more for a front-wheel drive, high performance family sedan?

Next up are a pair of platform-mates from Mazda, the new 3 Turbo and the CX-30 SUV. Is Mazda's compact star a true luxury player now that it's left its MazdaSPEED days behind? Is there really any reason to choose the CX-30 over the almost-identical 3 hatchback?

Sami certainly thinks so, as his time with the all-new SUV has him convinced it's got the German competition by the throat. The pair compare their back -to-back experiences in the 2021 BMW M8 Gran Coupe before wrapping things up with Benjamin's almost-complete 1987 Jeep Grand Wagoneer LS engine swap.

Episode 197: 2021 Nissan Rogue, 2020 Honda Civic Si Coupe Nov 08, 2020

The Nissan Rogue has always done big business, but much of that was based on price and incentives. Sami's drive of the 2021 redesign reveals that Nissan's new investment in the Rogue elevates it to a new level among other compact SUVs and gives you reasons to buy it other than simply getting a great deal.

Benjamin spends a week with the 2020 Honda Civic Si Coupe, a sporty compact that's among the last of its breed - and a car that is discontinued at the end of this year. How does the Si stack up against the dwindling crop of two-door offerings at the $25,000 mark?

Sami puts it on a road course alongside the 2021 BMW 440i and the enormous 2021 Alpina XB7 SUV to figure out which of BMW's latest performers is the most fun to drive fast. Benjamin heads in the other direction with the 2020 Honda Clarity plug-in hybrid, which is perhaps the biggest surprise of the year for him. The pair wrap things up with listener questions, including clearing up a few more fake movie cars and digging in to the Fiat 500 Abarth.

Benjamin gets his turn behind the wheel of the latest V Series and discovers what works, and what doesn't, about the quickest performance sedan from Caddy outside of a Blackwing. Sami re-acquaints himself with a perennial favorite, the everything to everyone 2020 Ford Escape SUV. The pair wrap things up with a look at the fake movie cars that Hollywood churns out to feed our need for speed.

The 2021 Acura TLX comes out of the gate strong with a redesigned platfrom a new turbo base engine that offers 100 lb-ft more torque than the model it replaces. Sami spends time with the sport sedan to see if it's enough to make people care about the four-door passenger car segment in a world where SUV's reign supreme.

Benjamin plunges back into the world of pickups with the 2021 GMC Canyon AT4, a new sub-brand from the truck manufacturer that attempts to deliver off-road capability without edging too far onto the hardcore side of the spectrum.

The pair wrap things up with a discussion of the coolest electric cars pulled straight from science-fiction.

Benjamin makes a case for the 2020 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 bring the most innovative off-road truck in the mid-size segment, while Sami puzzles over the lack of a 2020 Kia Soul EV for American electric car fans. What pushes the ZR2 above the Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro? How much better is the Soul EV over the Chevrolet Bolt? The pair answer these questions, and more, on this week's episode.

Benjamin spends a hot 24 hours inside GM's biggest sport-utility vehicle to find out, before trading it in for a longer stretch in the (still-underachieving) Chevrolet Silverado LT Trail Boss. How hard does the Bowtie's Rebel response take it to Ram's champion?

    Episode 191: 2020 Aston Martin DB11 V8, 2020 Polestar 2, 2020 Cadillac XT6 Sep 27, 2020

Is the 2020 Aston Martin DB 11 ultra-luxury grand touring car any less enjoyable with an AMG-sourced V8 under the hood versus a British V12? Benjamin puts hundreds of miles on a bright yellow version of the coupe to find the answer. Sami goes in a different direction with the Polestar 2, the Volvo-owned EV brand's attempt to prove it can build a reasonable everyday electric car alongside the Polestar 1 high performance exotic. The duo also discuss the Cadillac XT6, a luxury crossover that can't seem to live up to its stately appearance. Surprisingly, this may not be its fault.

    Episode 190: 2020 Cadillac CT4-V, Nissan Z Proto Sep 20, 2020

V, M, AMG, S, it all gets dissected on this week's episode thanks to the nightmare world of branding and Cadillac's ultra-confusing nomenclature, kicked off by Benjamin driving the 2020 Cadillac CT4-V sedan. The pair then discuss the Nissan Z Proto, which has Sami excited about the turbocharged sports car's potential to continue the Z legacy into the future with its clutch pedal intact.

With only a handful of examples finding new owners in 2019, the once-proud rear-wheel drive coupe has been on life support in world where the Chevrolet Corvette has morphed into a mid-engine monster and even four-cylinder hot hatches are turbocharging their way past the Nissan's performance envelope.

The 2020 Kia Seltos and the 2020 Chevrolet Trailblazer are ostensibly the same, but different, which describes almost every small SUV and crossover currently available on the market. Overwhelmed with slightly different shades of choice, Benjamin and Sami try to make some sense of it all after spending time with each vehicle. The pair also get lost in the madness that is the AUTO button on modern climate control systems.

    Episode 188: 2020 BMW X5 M Competition, Jeep Grand Wagoneer Concept, 2021 Hyundai Kona, 2021 Hyundai Tucson, 2021 Mercedes-Benz S-Class, Listerner Questions Sep 06, 2020

Personality goes a long way, which is what Sami discovers when comparing two luxury performance SUVs - the 2020 Porsche Macan Turbo and the 2020 Mercedes-AMG GLC 63 - that on paper seem a lot closer than they are in reality. Benjamin is completely befuddled by the 2020 Lexus GX 460, an off-road SUV that time forgot, wrapped in a luxury package that time also forget. Also on deck is talk about the Kia Stinger, the Bollinger van, and automotive audiobook recommendations.

Episode 186: 2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT Trackhawk, 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E, 2020 Nissan Rogue Sport, Hawks vs. Eagles Aug 23, 2020

The 2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT Trackhawk is the baddest high performance SUV on the planet - but is the 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E GT a few months away from kicking sand in its face? Benjamin extolls his love for Jeep's most ridiculous truck, and then discusses just how close the Mach-E GT will likely be when it comes to handling and acceleration.

Sami then explains why the 2020 Nissan Rogue Sport is a much better small sport-utility vehicle value than it might at first seem, especially when it comes to safety. Also, there's a really long tangent about hawks versus eagles versus falcons. You've been warned!

Episode 185: 2020 Subaru BRZ tS, 2020 Cadillac CT5-V, Parts Bin Sports Cars Aug 16, 2020

The 2020 Subaru BRZ tS is the last of a dying breed, and Benjamin is lucky to spend a week behind the wheel before the lightweight sports car gets redesigned to reflect the modern turbocharged reality. Sami isn't quite as enthused after his time with the Cadillac CT5-V, which muddies the waters for the luxury brand versus its European rivals. The two wrap things up by talking about a trio of sports cars - the BMW Z3, the Pontiac Solstice, and the Lexus RC F - that tried very hard to rise about the sum of their parts bin roots.

Episode 184: 2020 Lincoln Aviator SUV, 2020 Nissan Kicks vs. 2020 Hyundai Venue, ZZ Top Book Review Aug 09, 2020

Benjamin discovers that the 2020 Lincoln Aviator turns its back on its Ford Explorer template to provide luxury customers with something more fitting of its $70k purchase price. Sami has to search his heart before using his brain when selecting between the 2020 Nissan Kicks or 2020 Hyundai Venue, which each offer something completely different to entry-level small SUV buyers. The pair then also debate the merits of Billy Gibbons and his car collection as presented in the ZZ Top guitarist's new book.

Episode 183: 2020 Mercedes-AMG GT R, 2020 Ford Mustang EcoBoost 2.3L High Performance Package, LS Swapped Jeep Update Aug 02, 2020

Is the 2020 Mercedes-AMG GT R one of the best cars the Silver Star has produced in the past decade? Benjamin certainly thinks so, and Sami is inclined to agree after a week behind the wheel of the twin-turbo sports car. The pair aren't nearly as impressed with the 2020 Ford Mustang EcoBoost 2.3L High Performance Package, however, which keeps trying to make 'EcoBoost' and 'performance' synonmous for pony car fans. The duo wrap things up with an update about Benjamin's 1987 Jeep Grand Wagoneer LS swap project.

Episode 182: 2020 Ford Explorer ST, 2020 Subaru Legacy XT, Nissan Z Book Review, Listener Questions Jul 26, 2020

Does Benjamin have the same negativity towards the 2020 Ford Explorer ST that Sami does after his Edge ST experience? Does Sami prefer the Legacy XT or the Outback XT, and is there a place for Subaru's mid-size sedan in a crossover-crowded market? The pair answer these questions - along with a couple sent in by listeners - before tying things up by reviewing a new Motorbooks publication about the history of the Nissan/Datsun Z.

Sami gets small with the 2020 Kia Forte 5 GT, which provides secret hatchback practicality in a package you can't find from corporate sibling Hyundai. The two then wrap things up with a fairly deep dive into the reveal of the 2021 Ford Bronco off-roader.

What happens when an automaker imports a truck from another market with only cursory attention paid towards tuning it for its new customers? Benjamin's experience with the 2020 Ford Ranger reveals weaknesses in the interior, the drivetrain, and the pricing structure of the brand's new mid-size truck. Sami then discusses the relative merits of going for the 2020 Toyota RAV4's TRD Off-Road trim or sticking with the established 2020 Subaru Forester when shopping for a small crossover. The pair also discuss the details of the redesigned 2021 Ford F-150, which for some reason features a folding shifter.

Benjamin and Sami tear apart Dyson's decision to not build its fake SUV, before discussing the redesigned 2021 Toyota Sienna Hybrid and Toyota Venza Hybrid. The pair wrap things up by asking if you would ever buy a used supercar from a rental company - specifically, a Chevrolet Corvette Z06.

Sami makes a passionate case that the off-road pickups we have today are a better match for truck fans, before both he and Benjamin try to build a sport truck from every major pickup manufacturer. The pair then discuss 'what might have been' concept cars and the sad production models we got instead, tying in automakers from Nissan to Cadillac to BMW, before a listener update focused on cars designed by musicians.

Episode 171: Cars Designed By Musicians, Pierce Brosnan Fights With Aston Martin, Super Expensive Porsche Coffee Maker May 10, 2020

If you're good at one thing, you're obviously the best at everything else, too, and nowhere is this more true than in the world of musician-designed cars. Benjamin and Sami hit highlights like the Cizeta-Moroder V16T and the LincVolt before veering off to discuss Pierce Brosnan's fight with Aston Martin for some oversized movie swag, and of course Porsche's latest mega-bucks coffee machine.

After dissecting these victims of circumstance, the pair also discuss Rolls-Royce joining the automotive apiary with its new line of honey, before trying to understand why Hyundai's chief designer just quit. Finally, it's time for listener questions about trunk design.

Is it cooler to drive Bigfoot through a car dealership or escape tornados in a brand-new Dodge Ram? Could you really pull a house off of its foundations with a GMC dually? And what, exactly, were Tango & Cash actually driving in that weird climactic scene? Benjamin and Sami dive into the best movie trucks of all time, with Sami displaying a shocking lack of interest in the world of monster trucks no matter how many times Benjamin decides to bring up the history of Bigfoot, Bigfoot Shuttle, or Bigfoot 7. The pair also touch on the upcoming Hyundai Santa Cruz, which would be the Korean brand's first foray into the world of pickups.

Even with the market primed and ready, there are still cars and trucks out there that completely whiffed on finding an audience. Benjamin and Sami take a look at 8 vehicles that found a way to fail despite the best possible chances of success. The pair also discuss Mazda's strange decision to court luxury customers with an upscale, rear-wheel drive version of the Mazda 6, as well as Cadillac's orphan Blackwing V8, which can't even find a home in a pair of cars with Blackwing written on the badge.

Speaking of sequels, Sami laughs it up about the terrible list of car movies that came out after the success of The Fast And The Furious. The pair also answer listener questions, before wrapping things up with news about the redesigned 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee.

Benjamin has some strong words about the two-door Wrangler and it's place in the world, as well as how it compares to the Gladiator Rubicon pickup. Sami keeps things green by sliding through the week on a carpet of electrons, comparing the 2020 Chevrolet Bolt and the 2020 Hyundai Kona electric vehicles back-to-back.

It's time to TRD all the things, and with the Camry and the Avalon out of the way it was only logical that the 2020 Toyota RAV4 be next. Benjamin samples the TRD Off-Road version of this very on-road focused crossover and comes back with a surprisingly nuanced point of view on its place in the world. Sami spends a week at the opposite end of the size spectrum in the 2020 Toyota Highlander, and SUV that makes a lot of sense for 3-row shoppers.

Benjamin has a confusing time with a more down-to-earth performance vehicle, the plug-in hybrid 2020 Volvo XC60 T8 Polestar Engineered, which can't decide what it wants to be (yet is comfortable charging you a huge amount of money while it tries to figure it out). The pair also discuss the 2020 Subaru WRX, and try to decide just where this somewhat older high performance sedan fits in the world of compact turbocharged rockets.

    Links:

On the other lies the current zeitgeist of carefully curated speed experiences engineered primarily to produce impressive on-paper numbers coupled with squeaky-clean asphalt performance.

The new 2020 Subaru Outback XT is good, but does it match the expectations created by the thoroughly excellent previous generation crossover? Sami and Benjamin each drive the exact same Outback model and come away with surprisingly similar first impressions. The pair then discuss the utter disappointment that is the 2020 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, the best-selling plug-in hybrid SUV in the world.

Sami has the answer to this perplexing question after spending a week behind the wheel of Honda's latest SUV. You might be surprised to find out his answer. Meanwhile, Sami is back from Miami, Florida, where he got an advance look at the first SUV from luxury brand Genesis, the GV80.

    Episode 155: 2020 Ford Escape, 2020 BMW M550i xDrive, Listener Questions Jan 19, 2020

When Ford announced it was canceling all of its passenger cars, it put a lot of pressure on the redesigned 2020 Ford Escape to satisfy the needs of the entire spectrum of the brand's entry-level buyers. Sami spends a week with the Escape to determine just how worthy it is of that mantle - and how it compares to excellent entries in the segment from Toyota and Honda. Benjamin rewinds his BMW experience with the M550i xDrive, which takes last week's Gran Coupe drivetrain and packages it in a familiar sedan wrapper. Is it so all-around competent that it renders the M5 unnecessary? The pair wrap things up with a listener question about 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engines.

Sami struggles to come up with anything more than good vibes about possibly the best compact family crossover money can buy, but doesn't particularly think that's a problem for customers. After a brief diversion into the fascinating world of car showers, Benjamin reveals that the 2020 BMW M850i Gran Coupe is not just just a great alternative to the stuffier 7 Series, but also happens to deliver the kind of hands-off self-driving features he can actually appreciate. The pair then wrap things up with disgraced Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn's wacky escape from Japan .

    Episode 153: 2020 BMW X1, 2020 Lexus 450h Jan 05, 2020

Has BMW finally figured out how to translate the fun bits of the MINI Countryman platform into an intriguing compact SUV of its own? Benjamin is surprised by how strong a response the 2020 BMW X1 elicited from him during their 7 days together. Sami, on the other hand, checks out a less exciting, but still important piece of the Lexus line-up - the 450h SUV - and reflects on its place in a world where every second people mover hails from the mid-size segment.

Benjamin reveals just how uncomfortable he felt driving the twitchy 2020 Jeep Gladiator Rubicon pickup truck on a long highway trip, while Sami is back from Detroit with news about the redesigned 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe and Chevrolet Suburban SUVs. Does it have what it takes to unseat the Kia Telluride and the Hyundai Palisade? Benjamin and Sami head to Texas - but not together - to find out. The two also discuss whether the long-awaited 2019 Mazda CX-5 diesel crossover makes sense, and if the 2020 Lincoln Aviator SUV is a worthy follow-up to the Navigator. Finally, it's time to answer a listener question about the Fiat 500e EV.

    Episode 150: 2019 Mercedes-Benz A220 4MATIC, 2020 Cadillac XT6, Secret Car Movies Dec 15, 2019

Is the new Mercedes-Benz A-Class sedan a step in the right direction after the disappointment that was the CLA-Class? Benjamin drives the 2019 A220 to find out. Meanwhile, Sami tries hard to understand where exactly the all-new 2020 Cadillac XT6 fits into the luxury SUV universe. Rounding things off, the two talk about 'stealth' car movies where the vehicles are the true stars and the plot is in the backseat.

Episode 149: 2020 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque R -Dynamic, Volkswagen Bees, JETTA Sub-Brand, Hyundai Sonata N-Line, Aston Martin For Sale? Dec 08, 2019

How can the 2020 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque offer such distinctly different personalities behind the wheel when you add 50 horsepower from a mild hybrid system? He also slips behind the wheel of the 2020 Hyundai Venue to see if it can dislodge that special spot he keeps warm in his heart for another tiny crossover, the similarly-priced Nissan Kicks. Benjamin relates his disbelief over the current state of Acura after driving the 2020 MDX, and also discusses his latest book review, which looks at the Ford vs. Ferrari battle that's currently in theatres. Also, listener questions, Cybertrucks, and more!

How different is the new, front-wheel drive platform under the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe as compared to the rear-wheel drive BMW 2 Series coupe? Sami drives a prototype and comes back with his opinion on how well this entry-level four-door fits into the BMW family. Benjamin drives two of the best three-row SUVs on the market - the 2020 Hyundai Palisade and the 2020 Kia Telluride - and can't believe how much better they are compared to a number of more expensive luxury people movers. The pair wrap things up with listener questions.

    Episode 146: 2019 BMW M4 Cabriolet, 2020 BMW X6, Listener Questions Mustang Mach-E, VW ID3, Scion xB Update Nov 17, 2019

Is it possible that taking the roof off a car Benjamin never really enjoyed driving suddenly changes everything? So it would seem with the 2019 BMW M4 Cabriolet, the last edition of this generation's convertible M car, and perhaps the second-most interesting drop top in the BMW line-up. Sami, on the other hand, can't quite understand who's out there lusting after the 2020 BMW X6's muscular hindquarters after driving the new model at the company's Spartanburg plant. The pair also answer listener questions about the Mustang Mach-E, the VW ID3, and update everyone on the status of Benjamin's Scion xB situation.

    • 2020 BMW X6 M50i Review — There’s a line with luxury cars where they’re no longer just about luxury and style, but where they are designed to make a statement. The BMW X6 is a perfect example of this. Logically, the X6 isn’t as practical as the X5, but is just as high-tech and engaging to drive – not that high-end SUV-coupe buyers are looking for any of that. They want a car that makes a statement – like athleisure – that they’re too cool to care about anything like style or practicality or performance. In that regard, the X6 is a pretty big success.

Episode 145: 2020 Ford Bronco R, 2020 Aston Martin Vantage, Infiniti At 30, Electric Mustang SUV, Listener Questions, Guest Chad Kirchner Nov 10, 2019

Guest Chad Kirchner gets a ride in the 2020 Ford Bronco R, the 'Raptor' version of the upcoming SUV, and dives deep into the details on what to expect from the heritage-inspired model. Benjamin is back from Texas after driving the 2020 Aston Martin Vantage, which marries a German heart to a British body. Sami and Chad both attended the Infiniti at 30 celebration, which generated some surprise EV-related news for the brand, and finally the trio debate the merits of the upcoming electric Ford Mustang SUV, before trying to decide whether Benjamin need to buy a Release Series 1.0 Scion xB.

No, it’s not a 911. It’s a properly sporting English GT car, and that’s exactly the point.

Episode 144: 2019 Tokyo Motor Show Special, Robot Talk, Toyota and Lexus Concepts Nov 03, 2019

Sami's trip to the 2019 Tokyo Motor Show with Toyota paid dividends for car fans who are also robot lovers, as he was exposed to all manner of chasing, gripping, and transportation-oriented bots that combine terrifying levels of dexterity with a personality that 'wants to get to know you better in the night.' Highlights include Olympic robots, artificially intelligent Lexus concepts, and some sort of self-driving broom that may or may not be Halloween themed. It's the stuff of Benjamin's nightmares!

    Episode 143: 2019 Porsche Cayenne, 2019 Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio vs. 2019 Mercedes-AMG GLC 63 S Oct 27, 2019

How far has the Porsche Cayenne fallen behind the rest of the luxury people mover pack? Sami discusses his disappointment with what was once a class leader after driving the 2019 model. Benjamin, on the other hand, has a surprisingly positive encounter with the 2019 Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio after failing to be impressed by the standard, non-performance model. He compares it back-to-back against the 2019 Mercedes-AMG GLC 63 SUV, which may be one of the last V8-powered muscle trucks from the German brand.

    Links:

    • 2019 ALFA ROMEO STELVIO QUADRIFOGLIO: SUV PERFORMANCE SET TO 'OVERKILL' — So it goes that in 2019 it's possible to find a trucklet with as much thrust and nearly the same levels of grip as supercars from a decade or so previous. The expectation that a full-zoot hot rod SUV be able to pivot like a pro, despite its towering center of gravity and typically ponderous weight, has lead to vehicles like the Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio—a crossover that stretches brand credibility to the max by way of its family-courting practicality and over the top go-fast feature set. Surprisingly? It kind of works.
    • On the Road: 2019 Mercedes-AMG GLC 63 S — It might sound strange, but compact high performance SUVs are now so common on dealer lots and in driveways across the country that a natural pecking order has begun to emerge. Gone are the days when a small crossover with big power was an anomaly—we've now reached the point where every major Euro player has folded its sport-utility offerings into their mainstream tuning tier. Just like with sedans and coupes, buyers have multiple flavors of fast to choose from when seeking out their next hatchback-on-stilts for daily duty.

    Episode 142: 2019 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid, 2019 Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class Oct 20, 2019

Minivans get almost no respect on an SUV-laden landscape, but if the 2019 Chrysler Pacific Hybrid is any indication, they are still the best option for families who truly need to maximize space and practicality. Benjamin drives the battery-powered van and discovers all the ways it's a better choice than an SUV for so many buyers. Sami reports back on his time with the 2019 Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class, a revised sport-utility that has more bounce to the ounce, but doesn't quite deliver when it comes to th drive. The pair also answer a listener question about the current crop of turbocharged subcompact hot hatches.

Episode 141: 2020 Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat Widebody, 2019 Volkswagen T-Cross, Sami's Trip To Ireland Oct 13, 2019

Charger fans have finally been thrown a bone by SRT in the form of the 2020 Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat Widebody, a track-oriented version of the super sedan that mimics the wider stance of last year's Challenger Widebody while bringing some important suspension and performance improvements to the table, too. Benjamin drives both the Hellcat and Scat Pack Widebody cars at Sonoma Raceway and compares them to how their standard versions handle themselves at high speeds. Next up is Sami talking about his driving experiences in Ireland behind the wheel of Volkswagen's tiniest SUV, the T-Cross.

    • 2020 DODGE CHARGER WIDEBODY TRACK DRIVE: CONQUERING SONOMA WITH 707 HORSEPOWER — 'More, More, More,' isn't just the refrain of an unforgettable disco classic—it's also clearly the guiding philosophy at FCA's SRT. It's fitting, in many ways, that a superhit from the 1970s applies to so many of Dodge's recent performance products, given that they often wear badges that harken back to that decade's muscle car glory days. The latest load of excess horsepower from the last American automaker continually raising the stakes on street, strip and track, is the 2020 Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat Widebody. Joined by its somewhat-attenuated Scat Pack 392 Widebody sibling, this revised edition of the world's mightiest family sedan now features bulging fenders, a more focused suspension setup and body work that's aggressive enough to intimidate any other four-door in the daycare pick-up line.

Is America ready for the first-ever Subaru to have been fully built by STI - to the point where it had to be homologated as an all-new manufacturer? Benjamin drives the 2019 Subaru STI S209 on a race track to find out if it lives up to the hype. Meanwhile, Sami puts the 2019 Ford F-150 Platinum Diesel to work and realizes he might still prefer the revamped Ram. Finally, we take a deep dive into Jeremy Renner's private social media network controversy.

    Episode 139: 2019 Volkswagen Jetta GLI, 2019 Mini Cooper S Sep 29, 2019

The 2019 Volkswagen Jetta GLI really a Golf GTI with a trunk? VW would love to convince you that's true, but Benjamin isn't so sure after a week together with the car. Sami rediscovers the Mini Cooper S magic that he thinks makes the car something special in a very crowded slice of the new car market.

He also tours the plant where the Beetle is built and gets to go on a check-out ride right off of the line with VW test engineers. Sami laments the 2019 Volkswagen Tiguan SUV as being not quite enough of anything to feel competitive in its segment, just before the pair dive down a rabbit hole of TRD Camrys and Avalons, Jeep Gladiators, and a theoretical list of weird car names that may or may not include the word 'EarthSnake.'

Benjamin discovers that the answer is yes after a week behind the wheel in chilly Montreal. The pair also get deep with the 2019 Hyundai Veloster N, a hot hatch that's poised to shake up the established order, before Sami does his best to survive the Lightning Round when talking about the Honda CR-V, the Mazda CX-5, and the Subaru Forester.

Is there a world where the Porsche Sport Response button makes any sense? Sami certainly thinks so after driving the 2019 Porsche Panamera GTS at the Bahrain International Circuit, but Benjamin just can't wrap his mind around it. Fortunately, the 2019 Mazda Miata's new engine - which Benjamin had the chance to sample for a week - more than makes up for P-car confusion. Sami also relates his off-road adventure through the Valley of Fire in the Jeep Wrangler and Jeep Grand Cherokee Trailhawk, before the pair wrap up this stealth 100th episode with a brief summary of what was weird at SEMA.

Episode 95: 2019 Lincoln Navigator vs 2019 Ford Expedition Comparison Oct 28, 2018

After spending a week in these full-size SUVs, Benjamin and Sami compare the two back-to-back and are impressed by how much more the Navigator has to offer, but aren't willing to write off the Expedition, either, in a market that's suddenly packed with strong choices after years of neglect.

    Episode 94: 2019 Mazda CX-9, 2019 Subaru Outback, 2019 Nissan Kicks, Mustang Blues Oct 21, 2018

Reaching above its station as an affordable three-row SUV, the 2019 Mazda CX-9 offers swanky digs and a smooth ride - at least, according to Sami, who can't get enough. Benjamin's crossover-of-the-week is a 2019 Subaru Outback, a great family hauler that has lost its quirkiness but still delivers the goods. The comparison between the two sport-utility vehicles triggers a deep conversation about what vehicles need to be interesting to drive and which ones don't, just before Sami drops the bomb that the 2019 Nissan Kicks he drove weighs only a couple hundred pounds more than a modern Miata. Finally, Benjamin laments the passing of Ford's passenger cars once more upon hearing news that there's a four-door Mustang in the works.

Benjamin also waxes philosophical on the value of factory 'tuner' cars like the 2018 Subaru BRZ tS, a fun-to-drive coupe that may or may not be worth paying the upgrade fee for the handful of STI parts that come with it. Also, Datsun carnage after Benjamin's most recent track day.

Finally, Benjamin reveals that out of all the BMWs in the land, the 2018 BMW M2 he drove for a week is the only one he really, really wants - and Sami actually agrees.

Driven back to back against the Toyota GT86, it raises almost as many questions as it answers, and the pair go deep on what it means for a car with a history as long as the Supra to ride entirely on BMW mechanicals. Benjamin is back from the Arctic Ocean after driving the region's only permanent road to the northern shore in the 2019 Chevrolet Silverado, a truck that shakes out much better than its luxury-focused GMC Sierra Denali platform-twin.

After a week behind the wheel of a 2004 Mazdaspeed Miata from Mazdas' classic collection, Benjamin certainly seems to think so. Sami, on the other hand, can't get enough of Benjamin's weird winter tales of driving the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter van to the Alaskan Arctic Circle after he himself samples the new model in warmer climes. Before wrapping things up, Sami posits that the 2018 Honda Pilot is really just a fancier minivan - and is totally ok with that - and then the pair riff through Volvo's new 'languge' designed to help its autonomous bed-office-living-room cars communicate with mere human beings, as well as a BMW lightning round featuring the longest SUV name in automotive history.

Sami is terrified - really and truly - after spending a week behind the wheel of the ferocious 2018 BMW M5, but wonders why you need to input the Konami code to really have a good time. Benjamin counters with the 2018 Cadillac CTS-V's 640-horsepower simplicity, and then contrasts it against the much more raw experience of driving his own first-year, first-generation CTS-V with a manual transmission. The pair wrap things up by lamenting Ford's short-sighted decision to leave the car market in the pursuit of trucks and SUVs.

Episode 86: 2018 Acura NSX, 2018 Lamborghini Huracan Performante Spyder, 2019 GMC Sierra Denali, Pebble Beach, VW Controls The Weather Aug 28, 2018

Is the 2018 Acura NSX the ultimate example of soulless supercar perfection? Sami discovers that an amazing powetrain and incredible performance statistics don't make for a mesmerizing drive experience - but that the 2018 Lamborghini Huracan Performante Spyder that he drove the next day - also at Monterey Car Week - more than made up for it. Benjamin, on the other hand, is less impressed by the 2019 GMC Sierra Denali, a full-size pickup that comes across more like a missed opportunity than anything else after his time behind the wheel on the coastal roads of Newfoundland. Finally, the two investigate claims that Volkswagen has been controlling the weather, James Bond-style, at one of their Mexican factories.

By now, however, the game of musical chairs is over, and there’s no longer any riff-raff hanging around to clutter up the playing field – which is why Toyota has introduced an all-new Corolla hatchback for 2019.

Meanwhile, Benjamin has his expectations overturned by the 2018 BMW X2 sport-utility vehicle, while also sampling the similarly surprisingly - although not in a good way - 2018 Alfa Romeo Stelvio SUV. SUV! SUV! SUV!

Episode 70: 2019 Genesis G70, 2018 Land Rover Discovery, Sami Visits Ferrari World Abu Dhabi May 06, 2018

The 2019 Genesis G70 turns out to be more than just a rival to the current crop of entry-level sport sedans from BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Audi - it's a bit of a time machine back to when dialed-in steering, suspension, and a lively character were more important than outright power and multi-stage traction control. On both the street and the Mont Tremblant race track the G70 impressed Benjamin to the point where he makes some very bold statements about its place in the world. Sami, on the other hand, had a week of sand and sun in the 2018 Land Rover Discovery over in the Middle East, and also checked out Ferrari World Abu Dhabi which was, well, not quite as Ferrari-esque as he had been lead to believe.

    • First Drive: 2019 Genesis G70 resurrects ghosts of performance past to put spirit in sport sedan futures — That the latest challenger to Teutonic supremacy hails from Korea should be no surprise given the rising tide of quality, engineering prowess, and willingness to spend huge amounts of money on the part of parent company Hyundai. That the G70 succeeds so expertly where its erstwhile competitors have failed – or rather, ceased to try – is much more of a shock.

    Episode 69: 2019 Mercedes-Benz A-Class, 2018 Lincoln Navigator, Ford Stops Making Cars Apr 28, 2018

Stop the press, because Ford has decided to stop making cars! Well, almost - in the middle of recording this episode, Benjamin and Sami learn that Ford will keep building the Mustang, but kill every other sedan in a bid to focus exclusively on SUVs and trucks. The pair also talk about the all-new Mercedes-Benz A-Class, which Sami drove under the Croatian sun, and the 2018 Lincoln Navigator SUV, which surprised Benjamin during their week together with how much of an effort Lincoln has made in revising its flagship.

    Episode 68: 2018 Mazda 6 Turbo, 2018 Nissan Armada, Bear Attacks, News Round-Up Apr 21, 2018

The Mazda 6 has always offered excellent handling, but was left in the dust by more powerful sedan peers - until now. The 2018 Mazda 6 Turbo is here, and Benjamin has the scoop after a day spent zoom-zooming through B.C.'s mountain valleys. Sami and Benjamin also discuss the excellent Nissan Armada, which impresses despite frightening fuel mileage, as well as the overland Armada Patrol bear-proof camper, which might not be nearly as ursine-ready as one would think. Also, news!

    Episode 67: 2019 Chevrolet Camaro Turbo 1LE, 2019 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1, 2018 Subaru Outback, 2019 Volkswagen Jetta Apr 14, 2018

Who, exactly, is the 2019 Chevrolet Camaro Turbo 1LE aimed at? Compact performance enthusiasts or budget-minded track fans? Benjamin gets to the bottom of that question after driving the newest Camaro at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, when he wasn't having his mind blown in the 755 horsepower 2019 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 by pro drivers Tommy Milner and Tony Kanaan. Sami gets the chance to tell the world just how much he loves the Subaru Outback, before the two dissect Benjamin's wheel time in the all-new 2019 Volkswagen Jetta.

    Links:

    • 2019 Volkswagen Jetta Review — While it’s true that the 2019 edition of the Jetta does deliver incremental improvements in fuel economy, interior room, features availability, and safety gear, the overall concept behind the vehicle is very nearly a dead ringer for what was available the year before. Whether this is a good or a bad thing depends on how enamored you were of what Volkswagen’s popular small car already had to offer (and if you’re comfortable with a little less choice under the hood).
    • 2019 Chevrolet Camaro Turbo 1LE First Drive — Heralding the styling and equipment updates that have been made to the refreshed 2019 Camaro (the SS gains the 10-speed automatic gearbox that’s been slowly working its way across the GM portfolio, Chevrolet’s new Infotainment 3 system is now available, and, of course, the regular roundup of design tweaks also join the order list) comes the full 1LE treatment for the most affordable version of Chevrolet’s every-person performance car. The newest 1LE model doesn’t just allow the Bowtie to pull even with Ford, but it actually gives them something the Mustang doesn’t have: a legitimate track-ready package that’s now available with three separate drivetrains.

Episode 66: 2018 Nissan Leaf EV, 2018 Volkswagen Atlas, 2018 New York Auto Show Apr 07, 2018

Is the Nissan Leaf DOA because of its miniscule battery range in comparison to the Chevrolet Bolt? Should Volkswagen be building 'American' cars like the full-size Atlas SUV in a bid to engage with buyers? These questions get answered this week as Benjamin and Sami try to figure out the two unusual corporate strategies behind this pair of vehicles. Sami also reports on all the good and bad vehicle debuts from the New York Auto Show.

Episode 65: 2018 Jeep Compass SUV, 2019 Kia Sorento SUV, Kia Stinger GT Ice Racing Mar 31, 2018

Just how much did Kia need to change the already-outstanding Sorento SUV for the 2019 model year? Not all that much, as Benjamin explains after having driven the 2019 Kia Sorento from Montrose, Colorado to the slopes of Crested Butte. Sami wishes that Jeep had gone all-in with the 2018 Compass SUV he drove last week, lamenting the lack of polish on what should be a compelling compact entry. Benjamin finishes things off with a story about 100-mph ice racing in the Kia Stinger GT.

    Episode 64: 2018 Land Rover Range Rover Velar, 2018 BMW X3 M40i, 2018 Volvo XC60 Mar 24, 2018

Where, exactly, does the Land Rover Range Rover Velar fit in to the luxury sport-utility vehicle universe? That's what Benjamin and Sami try to figure out today, by comparing the gorgeous hauler to both the BMW X3 M40i and the Volvo XC60 - two very different, yet ostensibly competitive SUVs.

Episode 63: 2019 Ram 1500, eTorque, 2018 Jaguar XF Sportbrake, Amelia Island, Ford's New SUVs Mar 17, 2018

Can the best full-size truck on the market get any better? For the moost part yes according to Benjamin and Sami, who each drove the redesigned 2019 Ram 1500 in the Arizona desert. The pair wish there'd been an eTorque model to test out, but other than that there's plenty to talk about when discussing one of FCA's most important vehicles. Benjamin also had a chance to drive the 2018 Jaguar XF Sportbrake, which might be the coolest luxury wagon on the planet, while Sami spent time with the XF sedan. Finally, hot takes on Ford's big announcements / non-announcements, and pitting Amelia island against Pebble Beach in a battle of the Concours.

    • 2019 Ram 1500 Limited First Drive — Luxury pickups are often stereotyped as the automotive equivalent of the Texas tuxedo, the ultimate expressions of Lone Star excess that marry exceptional capability and “biggest state in the lower 48” size with leather, leather, and more leather.
    • 2019 Ram 1500 Review — The 2019 Ram 1500 completely embodies the cliche of working smarter not harder. It packs a ton of features that will make life easier for truck buyers, which will really help it stand out in this market.
    • 2018 Jaguar XF Sportbrake Review — But that’s really not the entire Sportbrake story, as I would discover again and again during my time spent driving up and down the southeastern coastline between Florida and Georgia with the leaping cat’s latest family cruiser. It seems as though somehow, only a year or so after having joined the SUV party with the F-Pace, Jaguar has managed to make wagons sexy again.
    • First Drive: Jaguar’s supercharged station wagon, the 2018 XF Sportbrake, is one sweet SUV alternative — Live long enough and you'll see almost anything that was once considered the epitome of uncool come roaring back into style. Witness the nascent wagon renaissance, which has seen these once-lamented family trucksters reborn almost exclusively as high-end luxury touring cars.

Episode 62: 2018 Maserati Quattroporte, 2018 Maserati Levante, 2018 Cadillac Escalade, 2018 Cadillac CT6, Cadillac Super Cruise Mar 10, 2018

What happens when Maserati buys a town in the Italian alps? Sami gets sent there to drive the Levante SUV and the Quattroporte sedan, in a completely normal and not at all creepy or isolated setting. Benjamin, on the other hand, had the opoortunity to drive both of Cadillac's top-tier models -the Escalade and the CT6 - back to back in a bid to figure out which one best represents the brand. He also spent time with Super Cruise, which is Cadillac's take on a robot driving your car for you on the highway - as long as you pay attention to what's happening at all times, human!

Episode 61: 2018 Audi R8 RWS, 2018 Buick Regal GS, 2019 Buick Envision, Hyundai's Sound System Takeover Mar 03, 2018

Is it smart to sell a version of your halo car that subtracts the one factor that your brand is known for above all else? Sami pilots the rear-wheel drive 2018 Audi R8 RWS in Spain and comes back to tell Benjamin what he thinks about Audi's gambit. Benjamin, meanwhile, spends time behind the wheel of the completely redesigned 2018 Buick Regal GS and discovers that it's a lot better than anyone would expect. He also drives the 2019 Buick Envision, the 'oldest' new car in the Buick fleet. Finally, Hyundai decides that everyone's car stereos should be linked together, and then patents that idea.

    Links:

    • 2018 Audi R8 RWS Review — This is the new Audi R8 RWS, a rear-wheel-drive model of the brand’s halo supercar. The German automaker says that this is how to properly experience the mid-engined, V10 powered marvel in its purest form (and customers have been begging for it), so we set out to Madrid to see if they got it right.
    • 2018 Buick Regal GS Review and First Drive — The 2018 Buick Regal GS is a continuation of the company’s plan to occupy gaps in a bid accumulate cross-segment sales rather than dominate with any one particular model. The sport-oriented mid-size GS hatch serves as the third and final prong in the Regal TourX and Regal Sportback trident that aims to skewer a trio of prospective buyers with a single family of wallet-friendly options.
    • 2019 Buick Envision Review and First Drive — Why puff up the Buick Envision now after a mere 24 months of sales? Because as young as it might have seemed to North American shoppers, the Envision was actually the oldest member of the Buick family, with models like the Enclave and the Regal having been completely redesigned within the last year.

Episode 60: 2018 Acura TLX A Spec, 2018 Honda Odyssey, Listener Questions, Chevrolet Corvette Z06, Supercars Feb 24, 2018

Chances are you haven't driven the 2018 Acura TLX A Spec, but Sami has, and he's willing to get behind the mid-size luxury sedan's mix of performance and comfort despite Benjamin's misgivings about the Acura brand. Benjamin goes in-depth on his time spent with the 2018 Honda Odyssey, a van wandering the wilderness of SUVs and crossovers in a bid to attract families to its cavernous cabin. The two also discuss the C7 generation Chevrolet Corvette Z06 after a listener asks whether or not the model is overlooked and undermarketed as one of the top supercars of its era.

Episode 59: 2018 Honda Fit Sport, 2018 Kia Niro Hybrid, Sad Toyota Supra Rumors, Korean Serial Killers Feb 17, 2018

The 2018 Honda Fit Sport proves that no one should be buying SUVs if what they really care about is practicality - at least, that's what Benjamin has to say on this week's episode after spending serious time with the subcompact hatchback. Sami counters with the ultra-efficient, 50-mpg Kia Niro, and boldy claims it to be better than the over-styled Toyota Prius. Plus: bonus trash talk about the leaked Toyota Supra specs, and a serial killer story from Korea with an expected link to the Kia Niro.

Episode 58: 2019 Audi A7, BMW i8 In The Snow, Driving Exotics In The Winter, Sami's Extreme Exhaustion Feb 10, 2018

How different is the new 2019 Audi A7 from the model it replaces? How strong does it stand next to the growing class of four-door luxury coupes that it once ruled? Sami has the scoop after driving the A7 for two days on the dusty streets of Johannesburg. Benjamin counters the South African sun with a week spent on snow and ince in the BMW i8, a hybrid that is surprisingly competent when the temperature drops, and a supercar that doesn't seem to mind plowing through the white stuff. Also, Sami fades in and out of consciousness throughout the episode, which was recorded a mere hour after he deplaned from a solid day spent traveling.

Episode 57: 2019 Infiniti QX50, Variable Compression Turbo, Mazda Compression Ignition Prototype, 2018 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV Feb 02, 2018

This week Benjamin drives the variable compression turbo equipped 2019 Infiniti QX50, while both Sami and Benjamin get to say the words 'compression' and 'ignition' over and over again after testing out a prototype version of Mazda's Skyactiv-X compression ignition engine. Finally, Benjamin reveals his disappointment with the 2018 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV SUV, while Sami engages him in that eternal debate: do you say 'P-H-E-V' or 'FEV?'

    Episode 56: 2018 BMW M550i xDrive, 2018 BMW M760Li, M-A-R-K-E-T-I-N-G Jan 24, 2018

When is an M car not an M car? When it's an...M car? If that's confusing to you, too, then join us for an exploration of two extremely fast, very large BMWs that wear the M badge more modestly than some of their stable mates - even thought one of the features a twin-turbo V12 under the hood and is the most expensive model you can buy from the German brand. We're talking M550i and the M760Li on this week's episode, and wondering what the end game is for BMW's M division: Motorsports or Marketing?

Episode 55: Live From The 2018 Detroit Auto Show Jan 17, 2018

The North American International Auto Show in Detroit is the largest gathering of automakers in the country, and each year it brings with it a packed slate of new vehicle debuts. Benjamin and Sami hit the highlights and lowlights of this year's show, including new concepts, cars, trucks, and SUVs from Lexus, Ford, Acura, Volkswagen, Ram, Kia, Hyundai, Nissan, Infiniti, and Toyota.

Episode 54: Live from the 2019 Chevrolet Silverado Reveal in Detroit Jan 13, 2018

Episode 53: Getting stuck in the 2018 Chevrolet Traverse Redline, 2018 Buick Enclave, Detroit Auto Show Preview, Crappy Jury-Rigged Car Repairs Jan 12, 2018

Which of GM's full-size crossovers would you buy: the 2018 Buick Enclave or the 2018 Chevrolet Traverse? Benjamin and Sami debate these near-twins, trying to figure out what, if anything, marks a clear dividing line between their redesigned platforms, drivetrains, and feature-sets. Or, in other words, how much are you willing to pay for QuietTuning, and how many bad decisions did Benjamin have to make before he got the Traverse completely stuck in a snowbank? The two also talk about what's coming up in Detroit at next week's auto show, as well as some of the scariest 'home-made' car repairs they have ever seen or done to their own rides.

    Episode 52: 2018 Audi RS3, CES Preview, G-Mode Button Jan 05, 2018

How did the 2018 Audi RS3 fare in dealing with some of the snowiest and coldest conditions Montreal has seen in years? Benjamin goes in depth about the most affordable entry point to the high performance RS line-up, with Sami offering his counterpoint after having driven the car on the sandy highways of Oman. The two also riff on the upcoming CES show, the weird technologies (including brain-to-car-interface) that will debut there, and of course, the Mercedes-Benz G-Mode button.

Sami spends a week with the 2018 Subaru Forester XT and is impressed by what the turbocharged SUV has to offer in terms of fun behind the wheel, while Benjamin dishes on the redesigned 2018 Honda Accord and whether its entry-level engine is worthy of the same praise as its range-topping sibling. The pair then delve into a retrospective look at all the cars and trucks they drove in 2017 - the good, the bad, the underwhelming, the puzzling, and the disappointing - and share their mutual despair for the soul-sucking maelstrom that is CES. Ending the year with a bang is Sami's very first, and very special, supercut.

Episode 50: 2018 Infiniti QX80, 2019 Volvo XC40, 2018 Buick Regal Sportback, Dad Jokes, The Downer Media, Porsche Bees Dec 20, 2017

Sami drives the refreshed 2018 Infiniti QX80 full-size SUV and then gets really touchy about how it looks, while Benjamin pilots the all-new 2019 Volvo XC40 SUV in Spain and is surprised by just how big of an impression the compact crossover left on him. We also talk about the 2018 Buick Regal Sportback before segueing into quick hits on the 'the downer media' comment made at this year's LA Auto Show, fake audio speaker technology that Volvo wants you to think is totally real, the uselessness of in-car shopping, and Porsche's millions of honey-making bees.

    • First Drive: 2019 Volvo XC40 draws luxury heat with style, not badge — It might be lonely at the top, but in the world of luxury SUVs it's also increasingly crowded at the bottom. Of course, 'bottom' is a relative term when discussing premium people movers – 'entry-level' is more appropriate – but there's no question that the 2019 Volvo XC40 is facing a hotly-contested compact crossover market dominated by the usual German suspects from Audi, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz.

Episode 49: BMW M5, BMW i3s, Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross, Supercar Hate Dec 14, 2017

BMW's newest version of its M5 super-sedan now sports all-wheel drive and an automatic-only transmission. Is it still fun on a race track? Benjamin drives the latest M5 at Estoril to answer that question - and also puts the BMW i3s through an autocross course to determine whether the brand's new and sporty take on its all-electric hatchback makes sense. Sami drives the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross, a vehicle destined to be the last all-Mitsu product to reach American shores, and then makes fun of Benjamin when he admits he's never really been excited by supercars.

    Episode 47: Lexus LC 500 - 500h Comparison, Compact Crossover Head-to-Head Shoot-Out, Silly Toyota Prius Prime Nov 26, 2017

The Lexus LC 500 is one of the best-looking and best-sounding luxury coupes on the market, but how does it hold up on the cold streets of Montreal? And who, exactly, would choose its 500h hybrid showroom-mate over the standard 500's V8 thunder? Benjamin drives them back-to-back to answer that question. Sami, on the other hand, spends a week driving not one, but four compact SUVs: the Volkswagen Tiguan, the Honda CR-V, the Nissan Rogue, and the Chevrolet Equinox, to see which one comes out on top. Wrapping things up, the pair discuss the Toyota Prius Prime plug-in hybrid, and specifically, how to devise a system that lets everyone around you know just how efficient you're driving. Spoiler alert: it involves the birth of a brand-new lifeform.

It also proves that sometimes ignoring the prevailing winds makes for a more interesting journey for driver and brand alike.
    • 2018 Lexus LC 500 First Drive: Ground-breaking luxury coupe lets Lexus find its soul — The 2018 Lexus LC is an act of bravery. Not only did Lexus take the unusual and difficult step of birthing a street car that hews almost perfectly to the gorgeous, yet production-challenging lines of the LF-LC concept that preceded it, but it also chose to ignore prevailing winds – or are those forced induction vortices? – that have come to define the drivetrains found in top-tier luxury coupes. That the Lexus LC is a stunning design achievement is obvious to anyone with a pair of eyes. That it also waves a big, five-liter middle finger in the direction of its would-be German rivals is in a way both a more and a less-subtle statement.

Episode 46: Kia Stinger GT, Honda Fit vs. Kia Rio, Tesla Roadster Reality Check Nov 19, 2017

The Kia Stinger GT has been aimed squarely at BMW, Audi, and Lexus luxury cars, but does this grand tourer have the performance and poise required to get a seat at that table? Benjamin spends a day with the Stinger GT in L.A. to answer that question. Meanwhile, Sami tests the Honda Fit head-to-head against the Kia Rio hatchback to determine where the best blend of value, practicality, and fun can be found in this hotly-contested, and affordable, segment. Finally, Benjamin feels cynical about the recent Tesla Roadster unveiling, while Sami tries to balance that out with good vibes and the benefit of the doubt about Elon's latest foray into boosting the company's stock price.

Mercedes-Benz takes off the gloves in the compact SUV segment and pummels BMW and Audi with the new 2018 Mercedes-AMG GLC 63, a 500 horsepower family hauler that has no equal in its class, and Sami has the inside story on what it's like to drive it. Benjamin spends a week with the Nissan 370Z, a car that's been largely unchanged since 2009, and as a result finds itself out of step with the rest of the performance universe. Finally, leaked details about the upcoming Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 are debated, as the pair try to figure out how the ZR1 and the upcoming mid-engine Corvette can play nice together in a crowded Chevrolet showroom. Also, lots of jokes.

Episode 44: 2018 Hyundai Accent, Toyota Camry vs. Hyundai Sonata, Honda Civic Type R, Nissan Micra Nov 06, 2017

Can the 2018 Hyundai Accent stay relevant in a world where people seem exclusively interested in crossovers and SUVs? Benjamin had the chance to drive the redesigned Accent in the Nevada desert and came back with some insights on the future of small cars in America. Sami stayed home for an in-depth comparison of the Toyota Camry versus the Hyundai Sonata, and was shocked by how the challenger has unseated the juggernaut of family sedan sales. Episode 42: Volvo Polestar 1, Next-Generation Jeep Wrangler, Toyota Fine Comfort Ride, Smell Like A Mazda, 2018 Chevrolet Malibu Oct 21, 2017

Do you want to smell like a Mazda? The Japanese automaker is betting that you do with its latest perfume, which distills the essence of the Kodo design language into a wearble fragrance. Is this as silly, or more silly, than Toyota naming its upcoming concept car the 'Fine Comfort Ride?' We're not sure, but we also talk about the Polestar 1 electric super coupe, debate the merits of calling a car the 'Polestar 1,' and try to figure out if the next-generation Jeep Wrangler will life up to the sales juggernaut that is the existing version. Finally, Benjamin spends a week with the Chevrolet Malibu Redline and Hybrid, and comes away not entirely certain where they fit in the current automotive landscape.

    Episode 41 - 2019 Audi A8, Mercedes-AMG E43, Cheap Sports Cars, Old Track Cars, Weird Shifters Oct 16, 2017

Have you ever wanted a luxury car that can actually leap up into the air to protect you in a collision? Audi thinks the answer to that question is yes - and it also feels that you're so sick of driving that the new A8 should take care of most of that too, as Sami discovers during his time in Valencia with the redesigned 2019 model. As for Benjamin, he spends the week with the Mercedes-AMG E43, a confusingly-branded mid-range version of the comfort-minded mid-size sedan from Mercedes-Benz. We also talk lightning rod shifters, fake manual transmissions, and why Benjamin feels like he was hit by a truck after a weekend on the track in his Datsun.

Episode 40: Fiat 124 Spider Abarth, Porsche 911, Sports Car Personalities, Jamie Oliver's Land Rover Oct 09, 2017

Have you ever wanted a Land Rover SUV that could churn butter, make toast, and dispense olive oil at the touch of a windshield washer button? Apparently Jamie Oliver did, because Land Rover built him one, a comedic gift for which we are eternally thankful on this week's episode.

We also talk about how poorly-executed the Fiat 124 Spider Abarth is - aka the Italian Miata - and have a deep philosophical discussion about whether a car that's so amazingly competent in every situation, like the Porsche 911, could ever truly win a driver's heart, or whether the most memorable sports cars - like earlier generations of said 911 - need to be at least a little bit weird/scary/rough around the edges.

    Episode 39: Ferrari GT4CLusso, McLaren MP4-12C, Dodge Challenger TA, Mercedes-Benz C300 Cabriolet Oct 02, 2017

Four seats and four driven wheels aren't what you'd expect from a Ferrari, but then again, the GTC4Lusso - an update of the FF - is like nothing else the Italian brand has ever built. Benjamin gets a chance to pilot the most unusual 12-cylinder modern Ferrari in the line-up, while Sami also reflects on his recent supercar experience in the McLaren MP4-12C, which has become a stellar bargain on the used car market.

Then it's back to Challenger town as Benjamin drives the Challenger T/A and realizes that it might really only be subtly different from the Scat Pack - and that's probably by design. Sami rounds things out with a love letter to the Mercedes-Benz C300 cabriolet, a car he would probably marry if he weren't already engaged to danger.

    • First Drive of the 2018 Lexus LS at AutoGuide.com — Launched in 1989, it was the brand’s first vehicle and it showed the world that the Japanese automaker had what it took to pamper serious luxury car buyers. It’s been almost 30 years since, and it feels like the Lexus LS has lost that go-get-em attitude. Fortunately for 2018, there’s a whole new generation that will bring some mojo back to Lexus’ big sedan.

Benjamin talks about driving the 2018 Mercedes-AMG GT R on the track at Bilster Berg in Germany, as well as his experience with the Mercedes-AMG Project One hypercar at the Frankfurt Auto Show. Sami discusses his strong feelings for the Mazda CX-3, and teases his drive of the redesigned Lexus LS.

    • 2018 Mercedes-AMG GT R - First Drive — I'm sitting in the driver seat of the GT R on Bilster Berg's pit row, listening to AMG Driving Academy chief instructor Reinhold Renger as he goes over the finer points of the bright green monster's high-tech wizardry. Although the R may share its basic shape with the street-oriented GT and GT S editions of the coupe, mechanically this most belligerent member of the AMG family is as different from the base car as a straight razor is from a Schick. Despite his willingness to demonstrate how I can dial in as much or as little traction control as I may desire using the dash-mounted knob, Renger helpfully suggests that, of the GT R's four drive modes, I stick with "Sport+" and avoid "Race" until I've had at least a few laps at speed under my belt. "You know, because, well, this is a lot of car," he says, looking me directly in the eye. A pause, and then he repeats this for a second time. "A lot of car."

    • 2017 Audi R8 Spyder review for SlashGear — Asphalt-scraping, bone-jarring suspension setups, blind spots the size of a refrigerator, and the constant danger of reckless drivers zooming from two lanes over to snap a photo while hanging inches off the bumper are hazards anyone who elects to daily drive their six-figure sports car regularly face.
