066: Escaping a Cult with Leah Garcia Nov 13, 2018

Leah Garcia’s parents joined the Apostolic United Brethren (AUB) when she was 10 years old. The main purpose of the AUB is to marry multiple women and have as many children as possible in order to gain access to the “Kingdom of Heaven.”

Leah left the cult when she was 16. This shattered the relationship with her family, and she had to adjust to living in the outside world all alone. I’m not going to give away any of her story in the show notes because it’s that captivating.

She now lives a happy life, married, with a daughter. She has been through more than most could even imagine and has come out on the other side a fantastic individual.

065: From the NFL to Hollywood - An Underdog Story with Isaac Keys Nov 06, 2018

Professional football player-turned-actor Isaac Keys, doesn't believe in letting anything stand between him and the achievement of his goals.

As his last name serendipitously indicates, the Saint Louis, MO native realizes that he's innately armed with the utensils necessary to bypass any and all barriers. Among these tools are talent, optimism, perseverance, a killer work ethic and a healthy heap of faith.

Isaac is one of the stars of the Epix original series Get Shorty, which is now available on Netflix. Check it out! It is one of maybe favorite shows I’ve seen in years. He also stars in the new show The Oath.

Isaac has been an underdog from day one. He played football at Morehouse College, a Division II school. Despite being a walk-on at a small football school, this did not deter Isaac from working hard enough to make it to the NFL. Isaac was a journeyman in the league from 2001-2007.

Once his football career was over, he decided to go against the odds once again and become an actor. Isaac had no formal acting background but worked his way through the industry for years and has now landed starring roles in Get Shorty and The Oath.

062: From Public Defender to Entrepreneur with Goli Kalkhoran Oct 16, 2018

Goli Kalkhoran is a lawyer-turned-entrepreneur. As Goli puts it “that’s a fancy way of saying I quit practicing law, did a lot of soul-searching, tried a bunch of different things to figure out what I wanted to do next, and happened upon an idea I turned into a business.”

Goli was the quintessential risk-averse, people-pleasing, type-A personality. She studied hard, got good grades and followed the predictable path to a great law school, never really questioning what being a lawyer actually meant.

Not surprisingly, when Goli actually started to practice law, she hated it. At first, she accepted the fact that regardless of her happiness she had to work as a lawyer. She never considered another possibility. Instead, she would daydream of winning the lottery.

This all changed when she had her first child and moved from Arizona to California. Every application she filled out for a new job in law made her feel stick to her stomach, and with the support of her husband, she finally made the leap to entrepreneurship.

One of my favorite parts of the podcast is building a network and connecting with amazing individuals who inspire and motivate me time after time. Jay Hanagan is one of those individuals. Introduced by a mutual friend, I knew Jay was a must for the Unbeaten Path.

Jay was enjoying an excellent corporate career, and then Jay’s company got acquired. Long story short, Jay took a severance package, and he had a decision to make. Go find a similar job at a different company, or take the time to set goals, better yourself, and help others. Jay chose the latter of the two.

Severed life was launched as a Facebook Group in order for Jay to hold himself accountable by all his Facebook friends following him along the way. It turns out he loved it and was inspiring people to better themselves as well.

During all of this Jay decided he wasn’t going back to corporate and he was going to start his own company. It is basically the exact opposite of his previous career, and he is letting people watch as he is figuring it out along the way.

053: From Undrafted to Super Bowl Champion with Josh Kline Jul 31, 2018

Josh Kline is the starting Offensive Guard for the Tennessee Titans. Josh is a major part of the resurgence of the Titans and helping them make the playoffs last season. Josh recently signed a 4-year contract extension for $26 million.

Josh has been down a long road with a lot of ups and downs along the way. This includes going undrafted in the 2013 NFL Draft. He then decided to sign with the New England Patriots to learn from the best. He spent 3 seasons with the Patriots including time on and off the practice squad, being cut/released a few times and winning a Super Bowl.

Josh is an example of hard work and determination, and taking advantage of the opportunity when it presents itself. He has learned a lot along the way from his experiences and some legends of the NFL including Bill Belichick and Tom Brady.

Louis Roberts in the Founder of Anyday Rose, a direct to consumer alcohol business. Their product is a rose cider containing only 1 gram of sugar and made with real ingredients. This might seem like a crazy idea, especially when Louis was working at arguably the hottest media company around with Barstool Sports.

You will learn Louis is a natural born risktaker and he loves building a brand. He started working for Barstool Sports well before they were a national brand and before it was the “cool” place to work. Louis saw something special in founder Dave Portnoy and the authenticity in his writing. Louis decided to get involved. He began working at Barstool essentially for free and help built the brand into the powerhouse it is today. Louis shares stories from the early days, failed business deals along the way, and the successes that catapulted the company to national prominence.

048: A Life of Space Exploration with U.S. Astronaut Sunita Williams Jun 19, 2018

Sunita L. Williams (Suni) was selected as an astronaut by NASA in 1998 and is a veteran of two space missions Expeditions 14/15 and 32/33. She is currently assigned to the cadre of astronauts training to fly the initial test flights for America’s first commercially built spacecraft the Boeing CST-100 Starliner and SpaceX Dragon. She and her crewmates are working closely with the commercial providers to develop their new spacecraft systems, which will eventually provide round-trip crew transportation services to the International Space Station.

With 50 hours and 40 minutes, Williams holds the record for total cumulative spacewalk time by a female astronaut. In addition, Williams, who has spent a total of 322 days in space on two missions, now ranks sixth on the all-time U.S. endurance list, and second all-time for a female astronaut.

047: Living with 12 Tribes Around the World and Making the World’s Healthiest Food with Corey Rennell Jun 12, 2018

046: Creating a Life of Extreme Adventure with North Face Athlete Hilaree Nelson Jun 05, 2018

Hilaree Nelson is a North Face athlete and Ski-Mountaineer. Combining a passion for exploration, mountains and skiing, Hilaree has traveled to some of the most exotic mountain ranges on earth. Outside Magazine named her one of the most adventurous women in the world of sports.

She is the first woman to climb two 8,000m peaks in 24 hours (Everest and Lhotse). She’s also skied from the Himalayan summit of Cho Oyu in Tibet and climbed and skied several high peaks in Bolivia and Argentina. Elsewhere, Hilaree has cut turns on remote volcanoes in the Kamchatka Peninsula of Russia, Mongolia, Pakistan, Lebanon, as well as many first descents in the tight couloirs of Baffin Island.

Born and raised in the Northwest, Hilaree began skiing at age 3 at Stevens Pass in the Cascade Mountains of Washington State. Eventually, she moved to the Chamonix Valley of France where she learned most of what she needed to know in order to take her skiing skills to the next level- ski mountaineering.

045: Creating a Dream Life from a Passion of Food with Chef Davey Rabinowitz May 22, 2018

Davey Rabinowitz found his passion for cuisine as a chef at Starky’s, one of Bozeman, Mt’s most popular restaurants. He moved to Bozeman to attend college but he soon found that cooking would be his future. Davey knew he wanted to build a life in Bozeman, but he wanted to do it as a chef. From Montana, he left for Portland, Oregon and completed formal training at Le Cordon Bleu. He gained further experience in some of the city’s finest restaurants, such as Castaña and Departure, where he was honored with the 2013 San Pellegrino Award and the West Coast “Almost-Famous Chef” Award.

Before heading abroad, Davey apprenticed at Atera in New York then moved to Copenhagen to apprentice under renowned chef Christian Puglisi at Relae, the world’s most sustainable restaurant. In each position, Davey took careful note of what he would include in his own dining establishment. Feeling the pull of Montana, he and Kierst returned with the idea for bisl in hand, ready to share their exciting palate with the Bozeman community.

044: From Half Dead & Homeless to Millionaire Helping Change the World with Akbar Sheikh May 15, 2018

Akbar Sheikh has had more of a rollercoaster ride to success than most people. Like so many recent college graduates Akbar did not know what he wanted to do with his life. This led him down a rough path.

Akbar bounced around jobs that he hated, including selling cars at one point which made him a living, but he was miserable doing it. He did not enjoy being so “salesy,” Akbar wanted to do good for the world in his work. He hit many low points before finding his way, including being homeless for a period of time not too long ago and living in a janitor’s closest. He turned to partying to mask what was going on inside, and everything came crashing down the night he should have died at the hospital.

Akbar changed his life as soon as he left the hospital. He quit partying and lost 50lbs. He also found online sales and tremendous success; making millions along the way.

I typically steer clear of online marketers or salespeople as guests for the podcast, but Akbar is different from most. Besides, his crazy story to success, it’s what he is doing with his money that caught my attention. Akbar was awarded Top 30 Social Entrepreneur of the year in 2017 because of all the fantastic work he is doing. He has a mission to end world hunger among other noble causes.

He is now helping entrepreneurs build their business online using his success tools, with one catch. Each person he works with must have a business with purpose, and they must donate at least 10% of new earnings to a worthy cause doing good in the world. Akbar is an awesome guy with a great outlook on the world and life, and provides a great conversation!

041: Leaving a TV News Career to Create a New Form of Journalism as a Full-Time Lyft Driver with Anthony Ponce Apr 24, 2018

Anthony Ponce is a veteran Chicago journalist. In July 2016, he received national attention when a video went viral, announcing he quit his job as an anchor/reporter at NBC to become a full-time Lyft driver, and launch the Backseat Rider podcast. In his new role, Anthony brings audiences the wide-ranging, hilarious, touching, sometimes bizarre, and always real conversations he has with his passengers. “Listening is a lost art form,” he told CNN. “What I think is missing right now in our national dialogue is aggressive listening.”

This week is a first for the Unbeaten Path, as I conducted the interview from Anthony’s playing field. Meaning, I drove around Anthony’s car for an hour and interviewed him. This time Anthony got to be the backseat rider. I was a little nervous at first because I do not have a car in the city and driving is not a regular activity for me. Brian McClintic is a Master Sommelier and documentary film star of the feature-length SOMM and the follow up SOMM: Into the Bottle. Once the girls graduated from high school, Lonnie continued to challenge himself, ultimately becoming a renowned extreme sports athlete. When the threshold for running the Grand Canyon was placed at 1,000 kayak rolls, he took his donated kayak to the pond on his farm and rolled it 1,500 times. The rest is history.

Lonnie has kayaked some of the most challenging whitewater in the world and is best known for having completed the first blind descent of the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon. He climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro, summited several of North America’s highest mountains, rock climbs, and is an avid downhill skier when he has time away from roofing work in his hometown of Duggar, IN.

Lonnie’s mission is to motivate and inspire others to embrace life with confidence and courage. He accomplishes this by the way he lives his life and sharing his story with others. He’s an advocate for many including the blind and our military veterans, and is living proof that we can define ourselves on our own terms.

I was fortunate enough to interview Rick and Randy Evans, founders of Evans Brothers Coffee, during my trip to Sandpoint, Idaho. Rick and Randy started the business in the summer of 2009. They developed their vision over long rides on Chair 6, skiing at Schweitzer Mountain Resort. Jeremy Ryan Slate received his master’s degree in ancient history from Seton Hall University, studied literature at Oxford University and graduated into one of the worst job markets in history.

He ended up continuing as the weekend manager at the same gym he worked at for 8 years. He took on a job painting houses which led to about 8 months of 16-hour days. David Alan is the founder of The Proper Knot and David Alan Clothing. He has a great story of overcoming challenge after challenge, and coming out stronger. David graduated college following the path he thought he was supposed to, and it landed him in medical sales. He did well but got frustrated with the corporate world.

David started his first business with a few friends at 23 which had some legs but ultimately failed because his partners looked at it as more of a hobby than a company.
