First & Last at WS100: Courtney Dauwalter & Jennifer St. Amand Jul 28, 2023

In this new format, First & Last, we talked with two amazing women: Western States 100 first-place woman and female course record holder, Courtney Dauwalter, and the very last finisher, Jennifer St. Amand, who finished with just 21 seconds to spare. This new feature gives listeners insight into how WS100 unfolded for both runners who had two of the most compelling finishes at this year’s event.

Dauwalter lives in Leadville, Colorado, and is a retired school teacher turned professional ultrarunner. Her running resume is nothing short of staggering with first-place finishes from around the US and abroad, including UTMB, Hardrock, Tahoe 200, Tarawera, Moab 240 and others. This interview was recorded just days before her record-setting performance and win at the Hardrock 100.

St. Amand is from Dexter, Minnesota, a former social worker and now recruiter for the Minnesota Army National Guard. Jen has ten 100-mile-races under her belt, including seven sub-24 hour finishes with two of those under 19 hours at the Tunnel Hill 100 in Illinois.

Heat Illness Prevention Jul 21, 2023

The heat is on! And we’re not just talking about Courtney Dauwalter’s blazing wins at WS100 and Hardrock. Join us as we talk with Dr. Jason Wagner to explore the physiological challenges that runners face in the heat, learn how the body responds and adapts to demanding conditions including, acclimation techniques, hydration strategies and proper nutrition for hot weather running, guiding us toward optimal performance in the most grueling environments. Additionally, we dive into the potential dangers and warning signs that runners must be aware of when pushing their limits in extreme heat.

Dr. Wagner is currently an associate professor and Residency Program Director at Washington University in St. Louis. He is also a Lt Col in MO Air National Guard where he serves as both a Flight Surgeon and Critical Care Air Transport Physician.

Mario is a four-time USATF Trail Runner of the Year, two-time former treadmill World Record holder and he recently took first place overall at the Lake Sonoma 50 in 2021. Recently, he became a triple crown winner at this year’s Broken Arrow Skyrace. Pete’s no stranger to monumental endurance feats - he’s the current World Record holder for the fastest coast-to-coast crossing of the United States by foot. Marshall Ulrich is an endurance athlete and ultrarunning legend with over 130 ultra finishes. He recently crossed Death Valley for the 30th time on foot in February when he set out to raise money in honor of his friend and teammate, Mark Macy. Macy is a long-time friend and recently competed on Amazon’s World's Toughest Race: Eco-Challenge Fiji with his son, Travis. Ulrich’s team, The Stray Dogs also competed alongside the Macy’s during the adventure race. Eco-Challenge Team Stray Dogs originally included both Ulrich and Macy until Macy was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 2018.

Scotty talks to Ulrich about his recent Death Valley crossing to Mount Whitney ascent to the 14,508-foot summit which raised over $14,508 for the Alzheimer’s Association in honor of Mark Macy. They also discuss how Ulrich and Macy’s friendship formed around adventure racing in the early 90s, as well as Macy’s Alzheimer’s diagnosis and his resilience while battling the disease over the past three years.

Rescue at Bigfoot Apr 14, 2021

Ultrarunner Duane Konyn recounts his medevac rescue while running the Bigfoot 200 in 2019 in Washington state. Konyn suffered a rare but life-threatening injury after passing the 150-mile mark of the 200-mile race. He talks to Scotty about the details of his medical condition and the helicopter and medical crew that came to his rescue, not to mention his pacer that helped out when Konyn was doubled over in pain.
