    Show notes

UFC Unfiltered starts 2021 with a bang!

Calvin Kattar has the honor of being UFC Unfiltered's first guest of 2021. He discusses his mentality heading into his main event fight against Max Holloway on January 16th, what he learned working as a promoter after buying the promotion he used to fight for, how it feels to headline the first ever UFC event airing free on ABC, and how meditation and mindfulness have played a bigger role in his life recently.

Then, Jim and Matt discuss fights between Israel Adesanya and Jan Blachowicz, Kevin Holland and Derek Brunson, and many more.

Rose Namajunas and Pat Barry close out the show clarifying that Rose does, in fact, want a title shot against current Strawweight Champion Weili Zhang. She also gives a tour of her Winnebago and shares who she's trained with while road tripping across the country.

While Jim and Matt are off for the holidays, we have one more episode of UFC's newest podcast for you to check out!

Becoming A Fighter is a new show hosted by Megan Olivi that aims to learn why your favorite UFC athletes became fighters. Our second subject is UFC Strawweight Rose Namajunas.

This episode details in Rose's own words how she was able to thrive despite the rough conditions of her neighborhood in Milwaukee, and how she overcame her battles with mental health en route to being a UFC Champion.

This show asks the simple question: How the hell did she get here?

Then, Megan Olivi closes the show to discuss her new podcast, "Becoming a Fighter", which profiles UFC fighters' lives before entering the UFC. She also shares how excited she is about heading back to Fight Island in 2021 and which holiday movies she and husband Joseph Benavidez watch every year.

Jim and Matt are off the next two Wednesdays for the holidays... but we didn't forget about you!

Once a wrestling prodigy in Colorado, Ian found himself in Spanish prison for drug charges, where he began seriously training in MMA. Only a few years later, he's a ranked UFC fighter.

Robbie Fox, Rob Font and Adam Hunter Dec 22, 2020
    Show notes

Jim and Matt are joined by Barstool Sports' Robbie Fox, who hosts the podcast "My Mom's Basement." After briefly torturing Jim with a quick conversation about The Mandalorian, Matt leads a recap of last Saturday's Fight Night: Thompson vs. Neal. Is Wonderboy back to contending for the title? How about the resurgence of Jose Aldo?

Then, Rob Font joins to discuss his impressive win over Marlon Moraes on Saturday. After a brief tour of his practice gym (complete with bunk beds), Font talks about how he could tell what Moraes gameplan was, how teammate Calvin Kattar looks leading up to his fight against Max Holloway, and his golf game.

Then, comedian Adam Hunter joins to discuss, among other things, his new comedy special that will debut on FightPass in the coming days: "Throwing Punches." He and Jim have known each other for a while, and reminisce about some of their favorite nights together. They discuss who the funniest UFC fighters are -- and which ones are the easiest to make fun of. Meanwhile, veteran stand-up comedian Matt Serra asks several questions about the craft.

To our Unfiltered listeners: Happy Holidays! The guys will be back on Monday for the last show of the year.

Ep. 3: Inside UFC Training Camp (Fight Week) w/ Forrest Griffin: Geoff Neal, Belal Muhammad, Khaos Williams Dec 18, 2020
    Show notes

It's Fight Week for Geoff Neal and Khaos Williams as they make final preparations for their bouts this Saturday.

For Belal Muhammad, it should have been Fight Week, but a positive test for COVID on Monday changed his plans. He shared his raw emotions with us hours after he posted that his fight with Dhiego Lima was off.

Fight fans saw Geoff Neal in his first UFC main event promotions last weekend, which included a particularly pointed threat from Geoff's opponent, Stephen Wonderboy Thompson. Geoff hadn't seen the promos, so Forrest had to tell him what Wonderboy said... on air.

Meanwhile, Khaos Williams has been working with a professional boxer as he tunes up for his fight against Michel Pereira, but his main struggles during camp have been trying to keep his family and friends from distracting him. Forrest tells a few memorable stories about what his network expected from him during Fight Week, and how much it used to drive him crazy.

Plus, all three fighters tell you what they do in the last hours before a fight. And in a particularly memorable moment, Belal tells us what it's like in the very final moments before a fight: backstage, you run into other fighters, your opponent, other coaches, and so much more. What actually happens back there?

Thanks for listening to the first season of Inside Training Camp -- hopefully, we'll be back soon!

Anthony Pettis, Stephen "Wonderboy" Thompson, and Scott Nelson Dec 17, 2020
    Show notes

Matt is back from his shoot in Las Vegas and is only a little bit jealous of how well Jim and Forrest got along on Monday's show.

Anthony Pettis is the first to join Jim and Matt. He shares how seeing a sports therapist is shaping his outlook on life, why he feels it's important to educate young fighters about their finances, and how it feels to know it has been exactly ten years (to the day!) since his "Showtime kick" against Benson Henderson.

Then Stephen "Wonderboy" Thompson calls in. He discusses how he fought through broken bones during his last fight against Vicente Luque, what it was like to have Chris Weidman as a training partner (for better or worse), and how he feels heading into his main-event bout against Geoff Neal on Saturday at UFC Fight Night: Thompson vs Neal.

"Lucky Gi" owner and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black belt Scott Nelson joins to talk to Jim and Matt about the origins of BJJ in Mixed Martial Arts, his partnership with the UFC on a new line of gis commemorating UFC 1, and how he collaborated with BJ penn to construct the perfect gi.

Finally, Jim and Matt make their picks for UFC Fight Night" Thompson vs Neal.

Co-host Forrest Griffin, Brandon Moreno, and Marlon Vera Dec 15, 2020
    Show notes

Former Light Heavyweight Champion Forrest Griffin joins Jim for today's special UFC 256 recap episode of UFC Unfiltered!

First, Jim and Forrest discuss the potential Fight of the Year between Deiveson Figueiredo and Brandon Moreno, and Forrest relives one of the worst instances of a 'cup check' he's ever experienced.

Then, Brandon Moreno calls in to the show, black eye and all. He shares his thoughts on his title fight against Figueiredo going to a draw, how he was offered a title fight less than a month after his previous fight, and why he's anxious to run it back.

Then, after Jim and Forrest break down Charles Oliveira's dominant win over Tony Ferguson, Marlon Vera joins to share why he's not intimidated to fight Jose Aldo on Saturday, what upgrades he's made to his house while quarantining, and how running helps him mentally ahead of a big fight.

    Show notes

On Episode 2 of Inside UFC Training Camp, UFC Hall of Famer Forrest Griffin checks in with Geoff Neal, Belal Muhammad, and Khaos Williams as they continue to prepare for their fights on December 19th.

Does Khaos Williams' intense preparation cost him relationships outside of the cage? Answers to this and much more, including check-ins with each of the athlete’s coaches and a surprise interaction with one of the athlete’s pet parrot.

Plus, Forrest recounts some of his best stories from his time in the Octagon. He also gives advice to the guys on how to cut weight the right way, how to be selfish during fight week and whether sexual relations should be a part of fight preparations.
