    Church Bulletin: The Black Exodus From The SBC with Dr. Charlie Dates Jun 19, 2021

    In this episode of Truth’s Table, Ekemini and Christina sit down with Dr. Charlie Dates, Pastor of Progressive Baptist Church of Chicago. He talks to us about why he entered the SBC and what caused him to exit. He was very candid so y’all don’t want to miss this conversation. In 2011, at age 30, Dr. Charlie Edward Dates became the youngest Senior Pastor at Chicago's Progressive Baptist Church; a church celebrating a distinctive 100-year history. He earned the Bachelor of Arts Degree in Speech Communication and Rhetoric at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and both the Master of Divinity and PhD at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School in Deerfield, Illinois. Dr. Dates' preaching and publications have been featured broadly through the United States. He is widely invited to preach at churches, conferences, and universities. In addition to his pastoral responsibilities at Progressive, Pastor Charlie serves as an Affiliate Professor at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, and on a number of boards for Christian organizations, including Preaching Magazine and TogetherChicago. He is a contributing author to the 2014 book Letters To A Birmingham Jail, and the 2019 book, Say It: Celebrating Expository Preaching in The African American Tradition. His first solo book on the subject of Christianity and Social Justice will release in 2020 on IVP Press. For reasons that please Him, God has blessed the Progressive Church to grow deep and wide under Pastor Charlie's leadership. Pastor Charlie is married to Kirstie Dates and is the proud father of their children Charlie Edward Dates II and Claire Elisabeth Dates.

    We Gon’ Learn Today: HBCUs Past & Present with Dr. Jelani Favors Jun 12, 2021

    In this episode, Ekemini and Christina sit down at the table with Dr. Jelani Favors who is the author of “Shelter in a Time of Storm: How Black Colleges Fostered Generations of Leadership and Activism.” They discuss the history of HBCUs, their present impact, and the future of HBCUs. Dr. Jelani M. Favors is an associate professor of history at Clayton State University. He has received major fellowships in support of his research that includes an appointment as a Humanities Writ Large Fellow at Duke University in 2013, and he was an inaugural recipient of the Mellon HBCU Fellowship at the John Hope Franklin Humanities Institute at Duke in 2009. In 2019, Dr. Favors released his first book entitled Shelter in a Time of Storm: How Black Colleges Fostered Generations of Leadership and Activism, which was published by the University of North Carolina Press. Shelter in a Time of Storm was the recipient of the 2020 Stone Book Award presented annually by the Museum of African American History in Boston. It also won the 2020 Lillian Smith Book Award given yearly by the Southern Regional Council and the University of Georgia Libraries and it was one of five finalists for the 2020 Pauli Murray Book Prize presented by the African American Intellectual History Society. Dr. Favors’ research and commentary have appeared in several media outlets, including CNN, C-SPAN, MSNBC, The Washington Post, MarketWatch, The Atlantic, The Chronicle of Higher Education, and The Conversation. He earned his Ph.D. in History and his M.A. in African American Studies from The Ohio State University. He is a graduate of North Carolina A&T State University where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in history with honors.     In this episode, Ekemini and Michelle are sitting at the table with Jennifer Lucy Tyler. Jennifer Lucy Tyler is a Bible teacher, storyteller, entrepreneur, and growth coach. She is also the creator of two journals, Be Your Own Relationship Goals: Volume 1 and The Changemaker Guide to Studying the Bible. In 2016, she received a coaching certification through Lifeforming Leadership Institute and focuses on helping women grow spiritually through online courses and studies. In 2018, Jennifer founded Soul Circles, an alternative ladies’ night out, and virtual community centered around studying the Bible inductively. During a Pandemic, in 2020 Jennifer founded Mission Consulting Hub. The mission is simple, “We serve the servant leader.” Mission Consulting Hub also provides additional income for consultants who are a part of the hub as they serve missions, businesses, and brands that are changing the world. Zakiya is the Vice President of Advocacy for the Expectations Project, where she oversees advocacy campaigns and executes learning experiences on education equity, emphasizing systemic policy changes. She also engages in strategic planning for faith communities and clergy to utilize their experience as they advocate for change. Zakiya loves to help people grow, heal and transform their pursuit of justice and equity. Working in public schools, nonprofits and corporations for over 16 years, Zakiya believes in addressing systemic problems individually and corporately. She started her career as a preschool teacher and social worker, went on to get her MBA and now works extensively with communities of faith and. generally with people of color addressing justice issues. Based in Washington DC, Zakiya loves taking long walks, supporting local business, visiting the National Museum of African American History and Culture and otherwise enjoying her community.
