Ep 84: Dan Howington - Divine Nature, Highest Intent & We Are Happiest When We Serve Mar 03, 2023

Show notes

Divine Nature, Highest Intent & We Are Happiest When We Serve
An accomplished strategic sales professional and leader, Dan has always been fascinated by human behaviour and the differences between those who are happy and successful and those who struggle.

Dan realised it was his calling to help those who struggle with negative emotions and behaviours, to remember their highest intent, embrace their divine nature and rediscover their passion!

Whatever we aspire to, whatever the life of our dreams looks like, it starts with understanding what success means to each of us, what truly makes us happy, where we struggle, and the willingness to take meaningful action. As leaders, we must help others align and elevate first, then create a culture of authenticity and empathy with our teams and organisations.

I love the questions Dan has made it his business to explore … Why do we feel the ways we do and do the things we do? What keeps us from living the life we desire? Dan’s notion that we are happiest when we serve strikes me as insightful and life enhancing - especially for leaders today.

Ep 83: Organisations as Organisms & The Vital Importance of A Bit of Research Feb 24, 2023

Organisations as Organisms & The Vital Importance of A Bit of Research

Introducing Gareth Morgan who gave us his marvellous book ‘Images of Organization’.

Over several decades of working with clients who are making significant changes in their businesses, I’ve noticed that organisational interventions that are not specifically tailored to the organisation in question do not work. At best there’s some improvement but not as much as hoped. At worst damage is done and more money must be invested to make corrections.

Gareth Morgan shows us several distinct windows into our organisations. Each one is of value in itself. The collection together offers the potential for deep understand and in turn radically intelligent and well-informed decision main and interventions.

In this episode I talk about ‘organisations as organisms’. Fascinating.

I recommend Gareth Morgan’s ‘Images of Organization’ available on Amazon:

Ep 81: Isolation at the Top, The 3 Crucial Support Categories & Thriving as a Non-Exec Chairman Feb 10, 2023

Show notes

Isolation at the Top, The 3 Crucial Support Categories & Thriving as a Non-Exec Chairman
With the right kinds of support and input, NECs can help themselves to thrive and succeed in the role; for the good of the business, the Board and themselves.

In this episode I explore this, and pass on a bit of the wisdom shared with me by NECs a few years ago during the research phase of my eBook ‘Autonomy in Relationship - the Human Side of Being a Non-Exec Chairman’.

Non-exec Chairmen are mature, experienced and capable people. They are relatively self-sufficient and able to manage all sorts of challenges. And - they are human beings who benefit from a bit of assistance. Some of this assistance they can provide for themselves. Some of it is more effectively drawn from others. NECs need self-support, external support and relevant input.

The more evolved we are - the more sophisticated and nuanced the support and assistance we require. Reaching out for help is not a sign of weakness, immaturity or self-indulgence. Reaching out is a sign of strategic wisdom. In recognition that we are each our own greatest asset, and the leveraging of that asset yields extraordinary dividends.

I recommend my eBook Autonomy in Relationship - The Human Side of Being a Non-Exec Chairman:

~ The science ~ the psychology behind Autonomy in Relationship.

Ep 79: John Heron RIP & Why Emotional Competence is Essential for Leaders Today Jan 27, 2023

Show notes

John Heron RIP & Why Emotional Competence is Essential for Leaders Today
John Heron, one of the giants of Humanistic Psychology, passed away in November 2022.

In his 1990 piece ‘The Politics of Transference’ John lays out three fundamental guiding principles:

“The first is that, both theoretically and practically, the intrapsychic and interpersonal dimensions of transference are to be seen always in relation to the society-wide and political dimensions.

“This leads on to the second principle, which is that the right to be emotionally competent - which includes the ability to understand and master the dynamics of transference - is the birthright of every person in society.

“Until this claim is acknowledged, the whole social, organizational and political process will be distorted by people unawarely acting out compulsive victim, compulsive oppressor, compulsive rebel and compulsive rescuer roles.

“This in turn leads to the third principle, that the right to emotional competence is an inalienable and central part of the right of everyone to a proper education.”

While I don’t entirely agree that any particular type of education is our birthright I do agree with everything else John says here.

In short, leaders wishing to make a significant shift of any kind - for themselves, their business or both - are well advised to invest in their emotional competence. Right now, before transferential material and unconscious acting out of compulsive roles potentially scuppers plans and outcomes.

I highly recommend John’s book Feeling & Personhood for theoretical material along with wonderful experiential exercises.

Ep 77: Consciousness, Higher Self & Evolution Jan 13, 2023

Show notes

Consciousness, Higher Self & Evolution
I don’t know if you've ever come across a book called the I Ching, which I believe was written originally in Chinese. I've got an English translation here by Brian Brown Walker, and in the front of this book there's a quote which I really like:

“The only true aristocracy is that of Consciousness.”
DH Lawrence

DH Lawrence was an English writer, novelist, poet and essayist. His works reflect on modernity, industrialisation, sexuality, emotional health, vitality, spontaneity and instinct. His best-known novels—Sons and Lovers, The Rainbow, Women in Love, and Lady Chatterley's Lover— were the subject of censorship trials.

Of course, at the time when he was writing, using a word like aristocracy was completely cool. It meant elite, what we aspire to, what we admire. Nowadays, the use of the word aristocracy is not nearly as acceptable or PC. I read DH’s quote to a friend of mine the other day and he said:

“So what you're saying is - Consciousness is the pinnacle of the whole shebang?”.

Exactly. Here’s another quote:

“The next stage of our evolution as a species, is the evolution of our Consciousness."
Me

… and that's why I decided to make that my life mission - to serve the evolution of human consciousness. Presumptuous? Perhaps. I like it.

So welcome to 2023. I invite you this year to honour your Consciousness, take care of it even more than usual. Say hello to your Higher Self. Invite your Higher Self into play, and really have a fantastic year.
