Sleeves, Bodies & Jogless Stripes! Podcast 25 May 2023
May 25, 2023
The Double Time knit along is still going, and this week we’re taking another step with our knitting and talking about sleeves, bodies and jogless stripes.
I thoroughly recommend it. There's something special about taking our usually solitary craft and making it communal. Not the actual knitting part - but the working together, sharing the journey part.
Sometimes, everyone knits the same pattern in a KAL. Other times, everyone uses the same yarn, theme, or designer ... there are about as many ways to knit-along as there are knitters.
THE WHOLE POINT IS TO ENJOY THE TOGETHERNESS OF IT ALL.
Rather than slogging away on your own for the uppity-zillionth time, it can be sweet relief to be stuck on sleeve island, or something tricky, with someone else.
IF YOU'RE IN THE MOOD FOR INSPIRATION, KAL'S ARE A FANTASTIC PLACE TO START.
You can ooh and aah over colours, yarns, stitches, and patterns until the cows come home in complete confidence that you're in the company of people who get it. Of course, because knitters are great people, happy to spend endless hours talking about knitterly stuff, which is delightful.
Feeling shaky about your colour combo? Stuck on a tricky stitch? No worries!
THIS IS WHERE KAL'S COME INTO THEIR OWN.
Especially if you're all knitting the same pattern, ask for help – someone will most likely have tackled it all before you, and while it's fresh in their mind, they're the best people to help. You might even find that some generous soul creates a little video for you to show you how your tricky stitch is worked. (It happens! The knitters in Truly Myrtle KAL's are the most fabulously supportive.)
While they don't always come with a deadline, a KAL often creates a semi-deadline that you may or may not want to shoot for. It's totally up to you – although possibly difficult to resist if you're swept along by the yarn fumes and happy vibes of a great KAL. Knitting with other knitters often makes for a team effort that ends with a finished knit. Yay!
We're hosting a fun KAL in the Truly Myrtle Hangout right now. Everyone is knitting the new Double Time cardigan with its fun stripes, raglan shaping and fun details. If you're tempted, we'd love to see you there.
You may already have perfect Double Time yarn in your stash, or perhaps this is the right moment to treat yourself and splash out on new skeins. Check out the beauties at fibre2go.co.nz or use your discount code TMDOUBLETIME at www.skeinz.com to get a 15% discount on their Flight and Pulse yarns (expires end of May 2023).
Once you're in the Hangout, let us know you're there! Leave a comment, show off your yarn (or tell us if you need some feedback on colours), ask questions if you have any – then chat!
Visit other posts, give them a thumbs up, and if you fancy, leave a comment. Be brave! Getting stuck in boots and all makes for a super fun KAL experience.
If you have a hiccup and find you don't have time to keep up with everyone, try not to worry. Making a KAL work for you is the secret to keeping it enjoyable and will bring you back for more.
So, even if life throws you a curly moment and you can't knit for a bit, if you still have time for a quick chat, stay in touch. Talking with friends you've made during the KAL may even soften your curly moment.
Later, when life settles down, your knitting will be waiting for you to pick up where you left off. And your new KAL friends will be ready to cheer you on.

Ep 98: Making (all the) Things
Oct 30, 2018
Hello!
I’m chatting about all sorts on the podcast today!
MINDFUL SHAWL RE-RELEASE
I released a new, improved and expanded Mindful shawl pattern last week. I’m loving the new bigger version in the pattern and feel so pleased that the writing style, charts and little techniques I’ve added make the pattern even better than before!
I’m so looking forward to heading back to Dunedin in March. I spent 5 very happy years in Dunedin as a student in the early 90’s and it’s always fun to go back. This time I’m heading down to teach some classes and display all my samples at Unwind. It’s a lovely festival, not too big but big enough to feel buzzing.
I’m lucky to be off to Sydney for the last weekend of November to spend a few days at the very fabulous Skein Sisters yarn shop. I CAN’T WAIT!
I’m teaching a full weekend of classes (which sold out quickly sorry!) and also will be there for knit night on Friday evening and a super fun “style session” on Saturday afternoon. Come, try on my samples and let’s talk about what you love, what suits you and how you can change things to make them perfect for you.
MAKING THINGS APP
The Making Things app is a brand new, subscription based platform for knitters. Think Netflix for knitters ;)
The idea is that you pay a monthly fee for access to over 1500 well-written knitting patterns from a ton of awesome designers. You can use as many as you like every month and the app includes lots of cool features like row counters, highlighters, interactive charts and a 24/7 chat line for questions.
I’m having a long chat to Megan, the founder of Making Things in this weeks podcast and you’ll hear how enthusiastic she is to create a beautiful, simple to use, inspiring and exciting space for modern knitters.
The payment model for designers is interesting and quite different to any we’ve had before. With Making Things designers receive payment in two ways. Firstly, through affiliate links, so we are paid a fee if someone clicks our designer link and eventually signs up to the platform (like the one I’ve got below) and secondly, every time someone uses one of our patterns in the app. I’m waiting to see how that goes over time.
It was fantastic to see you last weekend! We had fun didn’t we?!
Every couple of weeks I try to head down to Stitch and Bitch for their Thursday knit mornings. Will I see you there?
QUINCE AND CO KESTREL
I’m working on a summer top in this ribbon organic linen yarn and am finding it much easier on my hands than regular linen yarn. It might be worth a go if you suffer with tired and achy hands when you knit with plant fibres.

What a funny week. I’ve done a LOT of knitting so I think I needed a good long chat!
SISTER FROM ANOTHER MISTER HATS
I released a pair of hat designs last week and I’m sharing my inspiration for these designs, talking about features I’ve included, colour work techniques, how to make your colours pop, the yarn I used, colours and making pom poms. I mention Andrea Rangel’s book Alterknit as a great resource for colourwork knitting.
There’s also lots of chatter about wearing hats and accessories in general. Check out Woolly Wormhead for some hat wearing inspiration
Don’t forget to book your ticket! See you next Sunday, 23 September 2018, 3-6 pm at Stitch and Bitch Lounge Cafe, 225 Parnell Road, Auckland.
Happy knitting! Libby xxx
Ep 95: The one with the husky voice!

I'm back from Knit August Nights and I'm a little little husky! That's what happens when you talk non-stop for 5 days!
KNIT AUGUST NIGHTS
I had a blast. Held every year in the last weekend of the month, it's a New Zealand yarn festival not to be missed.

FRUITY KNITTING PODCAST
I was absolutely thrilled to be featured on the Fruity Knitting podcast recently! I've got a short segment in Episode 60 where I chat about 5 of my garment designs, the inspiration behind them and interesting techniques in the patterns.
Andrea creates a very professional podcast, a proper TV show, full of fascinating interviews and snippets of their travels. I learn something every episode and I really enjoy catching up with people as passionate about their knitting as I am.
Excitingly, I've got a special discount on all my independently published patterns just for Fruity Knitting Patrons until Midnight, Sunday 16 September, 2018. You'll have to be a Patron to get the discount.
Fruity Knitting is an independent production. They don’t receive any money from YouTube ads or sponsors. At the moment, Andrea is working full time on the show including evenings and weekends. Andrew supports the production around his day job. It has become clear that this level of work is not sustainable, so their goal is to have the financial support for Andrew to work on the podcast as well. There are currently around 1700 patrons.
Head over to their website to find out how to become a Patron. There are different tiers of support you can sign up to, but basically, Patrons agree to a regular monthly contribution, starting at $5 per month (which is around $2.50 per episode). There is a small processing fee, and Andrea and Andrew pay tax, but most of your money goes directly towards supporting the Fruity Knitting Podcast. You can change or stop your payments at any time.
What will you get? Andrea and Andrew have worked out some "rewards" to show their gratitude for your support. There are lots of behind the scenes discounts, interviews, chats and more. And, you also get to know that as a Patron you are keeping the Fruity Knitting on air, and that's great too.
Our next exciting event in the Floozy calendar is a party! Will you join Catrien and me for a fun afternoon of knitting, yummy drinks and food and prizes? And, of course, lots of Floozy fun :)
Join us from 3 - 6 pm on Sunday 23 September, 2018 at Stitch and Bitch Lounge Cafe, 225 Parnell Road, Auckland. We've got the whole cafe to ourselves for our party and there is parking right across the road.
Bring your current wip and your knitting buddies. Can't wait to see you!!
Happy knitting!

We're chatting about how Floozy came to be and what inspired the colours we came up with as well as how to choose a size, techniques that we've enjoyed and the variety of options available in the pattern.
Catrien has created some beautiful colourways for your Floozy cardigans and you can grab a kit off her now. Just head over to www.yarnfloozy.co.nz to choose yours! What will it be? Traveller, Dreamer or Still Waters Run Deep! There's a flat rate for international postage but be quick! I think they'll fly out the door.

Ep 90: Best Knitting Books
Jun 21, 2018
WOOLFEAST
I spent last weekend at Woolfeast in Christchurch. Find a show, festival or knitting retreat near you!
BOOK RECOMMENDATIONS
I have a bunch of books on my shelves, I'm a bit of a book fiend! Often I borrow books from the library before I buy them and I encourage you to try out what you like by borrowing from your Library.
Vogue Knitting, The Ultimate Knitting Book - I have the new edition and an older one and they're both great. Basically, grab yourself a knitting encyclopedia! I've also got The Principles of Knitting by June Hemmons Hiatt which is a tomb - jam packed with information but more wordy than the Vogue books.
Little Red in the City by Ysolda Teague. More than a pattern book, nearly half is dedicated to knitting techniques and lessons. It's a wonderful resource if you're a sweater knitter.
Cast On, Bind Off by Cap Sease. A super handy, very clear technique book that is easy to follow and includes 211 techniques. I use this one a lot.
Have a great couple of weeks!
Happy knitting,
Libby xxx
Ep 89: Bobby Bobbles
Jun 07, 2018
When I visited Isabel and Nick at their mill recently, I came home full of inspiration for giving things a go, taking chances and really investing wholeheartedly in something. Fueled with romantic notions of creating beautiful yarn in our backyard, I suggested to Mr Myrtle that we might buy a mini-mill. Strangely, he wasn't keen. So, I resolved to make the most of the scrummy yarn that Isabel and Nick create at Great Ocean Road Mill and set about to design a hat that would be warm, fun, and ready for any adventure. That hat was Bobby; a super-soft, deliciously-toasty, bobbly hat.
This week I'm showing you my hat and having a lovely long chat with Isabel and Nick from Great Ocean Road Mill. They give us a mill tour and talk us through the process of making yarn and then we sit down to hear all about their story. They're completely delightful and truly making magic.

Ep 87: Wool Gathering Adventures (& chats with Great Ocean Road Mill and Tom at Tarndie)
May 11, 2018
I'm back from Wool Gatheringabsolutely filled to the brim with happy vibes, positive energy and laughter. Karen has created a truly amazing retreat and if you are able to go next year, go!
This week I've attempted to include a couple of video snippets too. They're not perfect but I hope you get a feel of Nick & Isabell from Great Ocean Road Mill and Tom from Tarndie. I was so inspired by the work that Tarndie and Great Ocean Road Mill are doing towards more sustainable farming and yarn production and I hope to be able to bring you more news of what they're up to soon.
I am so inspired by Nick and Isabel and their work at Great Ocean Road Mill. They have a passion and determination to create beautiful, sustainable yarn that shines through in their yarn. It's truly stunning.
I wrangled with technology and learnt a bunch of new things this week. Like, how to edit two video streams to make a (hopefully reasonably) cohesive video! It's pretty thrilling because now I feel ready to interview more people! I totally winged it this first time, crossing all my fingers and toes that I'd actually figure it out! (don't tell Meg!) Thank goodness, a bunch of tutorials later, and I've got it kind of sussed.

INTERVIEW WITH PIP FROM LITTLEST PIP
Pip found knitting at a time in her life when things were hard. I think my chat with her will resonate with lots of you.
You can find Pip on her website: www.littlestpipknits.com, On instagram: littlestpipknits and if you're interested in hiring her to do some knitting for you, drop her an email: littlestpipknits@gmail.com

WOVEMBER INSTAGTAM CHALLENGE
I'm playing the Wovember insta challenge this month and posting every day from the Wovember prompts. Fancy playing along? Search the tag #wovemberinstachallenge on Instagram to see all the entries.

https://www.katmakes.com (Kat as she puts it on her blog is “an American currently living her best life in NZ” and is very generous with her information and tutorials)
http://madalynne.com/free-sewing-patterns/ (Madalynne has designed some patterns also in conjunction with Simplicity Patterns that are in my Etsy shop - a bodysuit pattern also!)
I'm on the hunt for garment testers in the following sizes: 30-32" and 50"-58" full bust circumference. If you're keen to test knit some garment patterns, give me a yell. I do all my testing on Slack, a free platform, and it works really well. You'll be knitting my draft patterns and checking for errors and improvements to fit so good attention to detail is essential. You don't have to be an expert knitter, but do need to be comfortable working to a deadline.
If this sounds like you, drop me a line at libby@trulymyrtle.com
Thank you!!

BOOTIES
I had a request for the bootie pattern that my mum Jude knits. I'll do my best to get Jude to write her pattern down :) but in the meantime, here are some similar (free) ones I've hunted out:
Pretty as a Rosebud-The booties are cute but I just love the bonnet and cardigan too!
Newborn Roll Brim Hat with Topknot- I prefer a bonnet or helmet to keep little heads warm but the booties look great and they're knitted in the round.
I chat in the podcast about how mum made simple changes to her booties to change the size, pattern and weight.
Have fun!
Happy knitting,
Libby xxx
p.s. The booties in my photo are tiny dolls booties that mum made for my girls. They're a teeny version of the regular babies booties she makes. See how how they go right up to the knees? Toasty :)
I'm back! Last weekend was amazing - it was a whirlwind time at Knit August Nights!
I've released two lovely new shawl patterns this week:
ZIDA
A luxurious two skein shawl, Zida is entertaining from start to finish. I love creating wiggly stitches and slipped stitches and the lace is simple and easy to memorise.
You can grab the pattern for a discount until the end of the weekend, with the code ZIDA. Find the pattern here.
Ah, wrapping Windsinger around your neck is like coming home. She's so cosy and easy-going. I also love how quick she is to knit and the miles of simple garter and easy short rows are just the right combination of fun and relaxation.
You can also grab this new pattern for a discount until the end of the weekend. Just use the code WINDSINGER. Find the pattern here.
I used two skeins of deliciously plump and soft Singularity from Knitsch Yarn for Windsinger. Tash told me it's selling quite fast so if you want to grab some, head over to Holland Road Yarn Company quickly.
Tash has kindly given me a couple of skeins to give to you! If you'd like to win two skeins of Singularity in the same colours I used for my shawl, just leave a comment below telling me which two colours you think would make a great Windsinger. I'll draw a winner and announce it next week on the podcast. Entries open until 9am, Friday 8 September 2017 (NZ time).
I'm chatting about my new design today, sharing a neat interview with you and drawing a winner for the gorgeous Zen Variations book from last week.
HULLABALOO COWL
I'm excited to release this new design - cowls have been a big part of my wardrobe this winter. They're easy to wear and soooooo cosy! There’s nothing quite like snuggling up in a squishy cowl to stay super cosy and ward off winter chills.
Hullabaloo is a long, chunky, reversible cowl that can be twisted twice around your neck to keep you snug as a bug, or worn as one long loop over your favourite jumper and jeans. Knitted in the round with aran-weight yarn, it knits up quickly so it’s finished in a flash.
The over-sized cables flow effortlessly from the rib borders and they’re easy to master and fun to create.
You can grab a discount on my new pattern for until Midnight, Sunday 14 August, with the code HULLABALOO. Enjoy!
YARN I used 3 skeins of Hullabaloo Aran by Circus Tonic Handmade (100% Australian Superwash Merino; 100g = 164yd/150m in colourway “Beach Stone Curlew”) or you could sub approx. 492yd/450m of aran-weight yarn.
Hannah's yarn is such a plump, soft aran and I loved knitting with it. So much bounce. And, she's offering a discount all weekend with the code Libby10. You'll love the colours!
WOOL ON WHEELS
This week I had the pleasure of sitting down with Julie from Wool on Wheels. She's taking a boot-load of gorgeous yarn around the North Island of New Zealand in October and hosting pop-up mini-yarn shows. What a fabulous idea!

To win a copy of the book head over to Renee's Ravelry page and choose your favourite of all of her patterns. Show it some love by clicking the heart and favouriting it and then come back here and tell me in the comments which one you've chosen.

I've got a fantastic announcement for you! I'm off to Sydney! I'm teaching three classes and hosting a trunk show at the gorgeous new yarn shop Skein Sisters!
If you're in Sydney over the weekend of Friday 19th May - come and say Hi! It'll be wonderful to meet you :)
Maybe you'd like to take one of the classes I'm teaching?
This week on the podcast I'm updating you on my capsule wardrobe challenge. I'm using the sudoku template to plan my projects and although it's a little fiddly it works great.
I'm really interested to hear about your jewellery making. Let me know your tips and links to great tutorials or ideas for necklaces, earrings and rings?
You're going to really enjoy the infectious enthusiasm of my delightful guests on today's podcast. Deb and Janine opened Sydney's newest yarn store Skein Sisters a fortnight ago and already it's been a big hit with the locals. As you'll hear, their shelves are heaving with beautiful yarn and they've got exciting ideas for classes and workshops. Be inspired!
