When Nerds Attack - KVLT: The Crimes of the Norwegian Black Metal Scene, Pt 2 Aug 18, 2023

Show notes

On the song “Freezing Moon,” lead singer of Mayhem howls,“Diabolic shapes float by/Out from the dark/I remember it was here I died”. It’s an oddly prophetic line, considering two members of the band would be dead by 1994, the year the album was finally released. Mayhem was central to the Norwegian black metal scene and most of the members were a part of the Black Circle. The Black Circle was a loosely organized group of black metal musicians who set about burning down churches and committing petty crimes across Norway. Stoked by two demagogues, the group told the public that their motive was to antagonize the Christian church and to do as much evil as possible. Last week, we set the stage. Join us now for its bloody end.

When Nerds Attack - KVLT: The Crimes of the Norwegian Black Metal Scene Pt 1 Aug 11, 2023

Show notes

Robert Johnson was a Blues singer in the 1930s who was said to have sold his soul to the devil in exchange for his talent. He died, inexplicably, at the age of 27, right at the peak of his fame. No one has been able to confirm the cause of his death, so the rumor of his Luciferian trade lives on. Musicians are often accused of worshiping the devil by conspiracy theorists and moral purists alike. Whether it’s true, is usually left up to the listener. Today, though, we’ll be discussing a group of musicians who admitted to their evil intentions from the moment they picked up a guitar and the impact of their actions would be felt by the community for decades to come. Join us now for part one of this diabolical true story.

Eye for an Eye: A Story of Murder for Hire Aug 04, 2023

Show notes

Punk rock legend Patti Smith once sang, “You gotta lose control before you take control.” It’s a romantic idea—especially because so many of us spend our lives chasing an illusion of control, when really, life’s kind of a crapshoot. But you gotta find a happy medium somewhere. If you’re too loosey goosey, your life is gonna be a mess. And if you’re wound too tight, well—then the first thing that threatens that perfect order might snap some crucial thread and send you spinning into the void. This is the story of a man’s quest for a life under perfect control, and what happened when he lost it.

Audacity: The Murder of Janet March Jul 28, 2023

Show notes

In The Godfather, Mario Puzo wrote “The strength of a family, like the strength of an army, lies in its loyalty to each other.” Family loyalty can be like armor in our most troubled times—when we’re at our weakest, our loved ones can lend us their strength. But loyalty can be a double-edged sword sometimes, making us choose family over reason—over sanity—over right. Join us for a Shakespearean tragedy of a story about a dirty little secret that led to murder, and a choice that took two proud families down in flames.

The Good Fight: The Story of Three Young Women in the Dutch Resistance in WWII Jul 21, 2023

Show notes

G.K. Chesterton wrote, "The true soldier fights not because he hates what is in front of him, but because he loves what is behind him." It speaks to an important struggle--how to hold onto your humanity when you're caught up in terrible violence. And it's a struggle that only gets more complicated when both friend and foe are not behind or in front of you, but all around, and it gets hard to tell one from the other. This is "The Good Fight," the story of three young women in the Dutch resistance to the Nazis in World War 2.

Where the Heart Is: The Murder of Jessica Sacco Jul 14, 2023

Show notes

You know that old saying—I think it was Ben Franklin again—that guests, like fish, begin to stank after three days? I feel like that’s being pretty generous, actually, I’ve thought about buying one of those party banners that says PLEASE LEAVE BY 9 PM. And that’s if the guests are INVITED. What happens when they’re not? Imagine having your home taken over by people who just decide they live there now, and they’re not going anywhere. That this is THEIR home now, no matter what they have to do to keep it. Join us for the story of Jess Sacco, a young woman who met her dream guy online--or so she thought. When he moved into her place, she thought their fairy tale life together was just beginning. Instead, Dream Guy moved a posse of his friends into her house without asking her, and as the weeks passed, the atmosphere got more and more hostile...and more and more dangerous.

Never Too Late: A Grab Bag of Lethal Old Ladies Jul 07, 2023

Show notes

David Bowie once described aging as “an extraordinary process by which you become the person you have always been.” We want to think of this as a nice sentiment, right? Like, aww, I’m gonna come into my full flower as the best possible version of myself. But what if the “person you’ve always been” is a nightmare? What if the monster’s just been biding its time? Join us for two stories of killer old ladies: Olga Rutterschmidt and Helen Golay, a pair of serial killers who preyed on the most vulnerable members of society; and South Korea's Madame Yoon, a woman who let delusion and obsession take over her life, and the lives of everyone around her.
